Desktop is frozen

Everything on my iMac's desktop has completely frozen. My mouse and keyboard seem to work, but none of the icons or programs are responding. The most I can do right now is a hard reboot of the machine. Does anyone have any thoughts on how to fix this, or will I have to bring it right to the store?

OK, so the issue is resolved, and it falls under the category of "you've gotta be kidding me". Mac support was about to have me reinstall the operating system, when my wireless mouse stopped working. I Changed the batteries, and the entire computer went back to normal. Apparently there was enough juice to move the cursor, but not enough to activate the programs.
Mildly inconvenient, but if it provides a quick fix for someone else, it's not a total loss. But I appreciate the suggestions!

  • Empty desktop, apps frozen....

ok so the other day i was trying to update my computer because i had recently restarted it and i had been out of town and my updater froze but i didnt really think about it until later. later i came back and i noticed that my desktop had no icons on it whatsoever and my finder was frozen. i tried to relaunch it but i didnt work. later i wanted to listen to my itunes but that didnt work either. funny thing is that my adium and safari work great! also i tried to run dvds and techtool pro and the computer wont load them. any help would be great.

Hmm... Could be all you need to do is restart and hold down the Shift key
until you see a dialog box that tells you it is booting into SafeBoot; and
then key in your Admin Password. Then, if it finishes startup OK, you
can then go into Utilities (see GO in Finder's header; drop-down menu
will show Utilities) and run Disk Utility; choose "repair disk permissions."
And let it run through; when it is done, quit Disk Utility and choose to
Restart from the Apple Menu. It should boot OK on the next startup.
    There are other things you could do, if the above isn't satisfactory;
such as try booting from the OSX installer disc-1 and in the menubar
header (after the computer is running from the system on the boot disc)
    you can view a drop-down menu selection to gain access to Disk Utility;
and from the booted installer disc, you can repair disk as well as repair
disk "permissions." Then quit Disk Utility and restart from the hard drive
via the Startup Disk (I'm in 10.3.9 now, so I forget if you have two ways
to restart from the computer's installed OSX when exiting the boot disc!)
[You will not be running the Installer; your choice would be in a
selection that will drop below the word Installer in the menubar
when you click on the name itself. Be sure to NOT start a re-
installation as you don't need to do that at all, at this time!]
In any event, since you can post from another computer, come back and
ask more questions if there is any further difficulties in this matter.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Desktop & Screensaver frozen

    Hi,
Everytime i open the desktop & screensaver button, it keeps loading a while then becomes frozen. I can't click into the system perference anymore and I can't change anything of the desktop or screensaver. However, other applications are all running normal. Help!!!
    Thanks

    Welcome to Apple Support Communities
That's a problem with the Desktop settings file, so you have to delete it. First, open a Finder window, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type ~/Library/Preferences. Then, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and restart.
After restarting, OS X will create a new Desktop settings file and you will be able to open the Desktop and Screen Saver preference pane without any problem. This is caused because of a corrupted settings file

  • After Installing Leopard My Desktop is Frozen and I Can't Open Applications

I have recently upgraded from 10.3 to 10.5 and after the reboot, my machine will generally freeze after loading icons and folders at the desktop. The mouse and keyboard are functional, but everything else is locked or frozen.
Now, if I click on a folder or icon as soon as the desktop is visible and during loading, I can then use the OS as normal without any problems. It's only when I don't touch anything for a couple seconds that I am locked out. Very strange.
Anyone had a similar experience, or a possible solution? Thanks.

Did you use the default (overwrite) install?
If so, you are probably looking at many of your old apps which will not run under Leoapard.
The Archive & Install option and migrate is usually best for very old systems with software that is not Leopard compatible.
Did you make a clone backup of your previous system? If so, I would suggest reinstalling it and starting again with the Archive & Install option.
You might try running the disk utility if you can open it, and repairing the HD and permissions.
Otherwise you can boot into the Leopard DVD, go past the language screen and in the menu, top right, select Options and run DU from there.
This may not fix everything, but it's worth doing.

  • Files On Desktop Suddenly Frozen And Won't Open ??

I was writing a reply to the forum half an hour ago and needed to open a file on my desktop.
It refused to open. I can drag it about but not open it.
All the other files on the desktop are similarly frozen or dead.
The Dock appears OK and I can open programs.
I restarted the computer to no avail.
I switched it off and disconnected the power, but when it was switched on again the desktop files are still frozen. I can highlight them but not open them.
    Any ideas?
PS. I can access the files by going into my users folder in the Dock, selecting the Desktop folder and opening the files from there.

    More Info:-
I have run Verify Disk and Repair Disk Permissions to no avail.
Thinking back over the past few weeks I had noticed some slightly unusual behaviour which may have been building up to this.
When I started up the computer the icons would all appear on the desktop and then some of them would appear to "flash" slightly as though they were not at full brightness to begin with.
Also when I opened a folder, sometimes the icons inside would hesitate before appearing.
These symptoms were so slight that I took no real notice of them ...... I was just vaguely aware they were occurring.
I also seem to recollect on occasions, certain desktop folders not opening the first time they were double-clicked, but they always worked soon after so I thought nothing of that ........ putting it down to a temporary glitch.
An hour before this freeze occurred I had replaced the Mighty Mouse with an old Logitech wireless one and at first thought that might be the cause, but swopping back to the Mighty Mouse changed nothing!

  • My Desktop Is Frozen When I Startup...Help!

Everything looks okay on the desktop when it starts up, and I can move the mouse, but I cant do anything besides that. Sometimes when I restart it I cant even log in, it freezes at that point. Sometimes the dock is there, sometimes its not, but it will not open anything. If I try to open finder or a program on the dock it will freeze in its animated state, but I can move the mouse still. Sometimes I can do small things like turn the sound off or down through the keyboard, but then it freezes after that and I cant turn the sound back up or on. That's pretty much all it will let me do.
This started happening when I was in the middle of installing the Adobe Creative Suite 2; it froze and I had to restart it. I tried all the trouble shooting tips (holding down option when starting, repairing the harddrive through the disk utility, etc..). short of resetting it to the factory settings. Is there anything else I can do to fix it without losing all my stuff?
Also: when I repaired the harddrive it said it needed to be repaired, but it didnt make any difference afterwards...
I'm not a really technical person, so should I just find / pay someone to help me? Or is this simple enough for me to fix this myself?
    Thanks!

Same problem. In my case OSX fails to load and I'm left with a blue screen. Have also tried all of the tips to start up from the vaious volumes, have checked and repaired the HD through disk utility (which told me nothing was wrong).
Only solution is to re-load from the two disks. You can't mount OSX on the HD (yellow warning) so you follow the option to re-load it while preserving the applications in a separate folder.
This worked yesterday but I had a re-freeze while trying to load Norton today from my disk not intended for MBP.
The huge problem is that everytime I do this I lose valuabe HD space. The essence of the problem is why doesn't OSX start up properly when all disk utility tests indicate the HD volumes are fine? Any other suggestions before I call Apple Care?

  • Finder and desktop icons frozen after time machine backup

Finder desktop icons freeze every time after a Time Machine backup. *What's odd is that I can still use other apps, but I cannot select/open any item on the desktop*.
Adding to the strangeness, +is that what's left after the backup is finished is a blank space+ (beneath the HD icon). Typically, all the items on the desktop rearrange themselves to their original positions once the backup volume disappears (i.e. backup is complete).
I've run disk utility for permissions check, and all is well.
Would appreciate some guidance on how to fix.
This issue pre-dates the 10.5.7 update.

    HI,
    Try deleting these files.
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.desktop.plist
/Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Drag that file from the Preferences to the Trash, empty the Trash and restart your Mac.

  • Desktop files frozen after Time Machine Backup

When I get home and plug my Mac Book Pro into the external hard drive time machine starts up and backs up. After time machine is finished I cannot click on any of the icons on my desktop. I have to switch to the login window (i don't actually have to log out, just switch to the window like I am changing users) and then login in again and everything is back to normal. If it doesn't happen on the first back up it happens on one of the subsequent ones.
I have the exact same configuration at home and at work so I my guess is the problem I am having is time machine because it only happens at home when my external hard drive is plugged in. It has never happened at work.
    Any ideas?

I have the same issue, but I don't know it it's related to time machine. Perhaps. It happens after I disconnect my USB hub at work (including the TM backup disk). I assumed it was related to this, but maybe it's TM backup. I usually force quit finder, but maybe your "solution" is better.

I have tried going onto get info on the desktop screen in finder any checked to see that it is unlocked and i have made sure that on the ownership and permissions it says 'read and write'. • Desktop manager frozen

After synching just fine for several months, my Bberry suddenly refuses to synch.  When I connect it to my computer the desktop manager comes up and shows that the connection is working after I enter the security password.  However, the data does not synch with Outlook and when I try to use the Desktop manager icons or menu, they do not respond unless the device is disconnected.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling the DM, with no change.
    Thanks for any help.

    Try one of the following:
Delete the intellisync folder, then try synching again - http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB11703
Perform a clean uninstall on the software, then reinstall the Desktop Manager - http://www.blackberry.com/btsc/KB02206

  • Gnome desktop semi-frozen on initial login... then thaws.

    Hi folks,
I've got a weird problem which I'm hoping you can help diagnose...
On logging into Gnome from XDM the desktop appears as normal but I have no right click menu on the desktop, no main menu and no keyboard input. I can start apps from Cairo-Dock, where Firefox and Thunderbird do have responding menus. Logging out (from Cairo-Dock) and back in immediately solves the problem every time and also, curiously, if I wait for around 5-6 minutes everything starts working again.
I've tried disabling Compiz and also looking through the logs but nothing jumps out at me. This has been happening for a few weeks now and I haven't been able to associate it with any particular update. I've also tried removing .gconf .gconfd .gnome .gnome2 etc but to no avail. Killing Nautilus and restarting makes no difference either.
If anyone could suggest a way to track this down I would be most grateful.

I've tried watching the processes but nothing's racing or out of the ordinary as far as I can tell.

  • System will not boot frozen no icons on desktop

My desktop is frozen will not respond to mouse or keyboard

    Hi NcBunky,
Are you using Win 7 64 bit? Did you update the Texas Instruments (TI) USB 3.0 XHCI Host Controller?
I have an H8 1380t PC. Updated the TI USB 3.0 driver and had the same problem.
When booting the PC with the USB 3.0 external drive connected to the PC the PC would not boot. When booting the PC with only the mouse, keyboard, and a USB 2.0 external drive attached the PC would boot. Once booted you could attach the USB 3.0 drive and it worked fine.
Solution was to roll back (reinstall) the TI USB 3.0 XHCI Host Controller to the original factory installed driver.
System now boots with the external USB 3.0 drive attached.

  • Icons frozen on desktop

I'm asking this on behalf of my dad, who has an iMac G3 with OS 9. For some reason, the icons on his desktop are frozen in place (can't be dragged and dropped anywhere), and there's a gray outline around each one, including the trash. I still have a iMac G3 but can't figure out where to tell him to go in the Control Panel or Preferences to unstick everything. Anyone have any suggestions?
    iMac G3   Mac OS 9.2.x

    Hi, Sheryl -
In case your dad prefers buttons, there is a way to move them - drag them by the button's namefield rather than by the button itself.

  • Help!  Desktop Frozen!

    Help! Desktop Frozen!
    Here is the deal--
I was uploading some photo Image Files(jpg) to the internet. I was moving a ton of files(over 300) from one folder on the desktop to the trash and accidently moved them onto the desktop, it filled all my spaces and then my power went out.
    Problem--
I restarted the MAC and the desktop is frozen, I can go open programs from the DOCK, except TRASH, I cant open up any files of folders on my desktop and when I try I get the spinning circle for 20 secs. I tried to restart, but it won't and I have to pull the plug. I tried that with another startup disk but and it won't start up from another disk--but I can insert a new disk whenever.
I can't even open my hard drive files because there are tons of icons on top of the HD icon, because of all the file icons from the move.
    Please help!
