Desktop isn't visible - no icons at all
Although my background pictures are working normally, I cannot see any files or folders that are normally on my desktop. No drives are visible. The Finder works as expected -- I can see all my volumes, and browse to my Desktop folder inside a window, but they don't appear on my Desktop.
I've tried rebooting a couple times and repairing file permissions. I just installed the 10.4.10 update, which may have been part of this problem.
Any thoughts on how I can get my Desktop icons back?

Hi.
Try deleting the hidden .DS_Store from the Desktop, as described in this previous post.

Setting up your Verizon Online email with Mac OS X Mail
Start OS X Mail.
From the Mail menu, select Preferences.
Click Add Account.
Click the Account Information tab.
From the Account Type menu, select POP.
In the Description field, enter a name for this account.
In the Email Address field, enter your Verizon Online email address (format is [email protected]).
Type pop.verizon.net in the Incoming Mail Server field.
In the User Name field, enter your Verizon Online user name.
In the Password field, enter your Verizon Online password.
From the Outgoing Mail Server menu, select New.
The SMTP Server Options screen appears.
Type smtp.verizon.net in the Outgoing Mail Server field.
Note: Leave all other settings in the SMTP Server Options screen with their default settings.
Click OK. -
Creating Mobile Link that Isn't Visible on Desktop Browser
I hope this makes sense.
I have a mobile site with a link to my desktop site. I also want to add a link on the desktop site for mobile visitors to get back to the mobile site. But I don't want this link visible on a desktop browser... only visible on a mobile browsers.
You can see an example of this by going to tipb.com on a mobile device, scroll down to the bottom and click on the "Switch to Regular Theme", then scroll all the way down on that page, you'll see a "Switch to Mobile Version" that isn't visible on a desktop browser.
Hoping it's pretty simple.

SteveI could be wrong, but it looks like the website is designed using WordPress. Then they are using a plugin from http://www.bravenewcode.com/ called WPtouch Pro that detects a mobile device and sets a different theme for the mobile device. I'm trying to hook up my Macbook Pro to my TV. I'm using the 'mini-display port to female HDMI" adapter. all i can see is my desktop background. no folders or icons and when i play a movie it goes blank.
Drag applications from your main desktop off the right side of the screen and they will appear on the TV. This is the extended desktop mode.

Is it C:\Users\Public\Desktop ?
Or is it C:\Users\All Users\Desktop ?
Would it also be possible to explain the differences as well? Or paste some links to the overview of each one? I am having trouble finding anything from MS.

Icons were all stacked in one place on desktop
I needed to re-start my Mac. When I did, all of the desktop icons were stacked on top of each other, occupying only one space on the desktop. Not being very useful that way, I had to create a new folder, move all of them into the folder and then move them back to the desktop. Why did this happen? Did I do something wrong to make this happen.

If it happens again, just click anywhere on the Desktop, other than on the icons, then click, "Clean Up," in the Finder's View menu. -
The screen displayed on the instructions for home sharing described as being found on the left side of iTunes isn't visible on the new iTunes page?? Where do i find that screen i.e., how do I fine the home sharing icon on the new iTunes page?

What's with Mountain Lion? Never was an issue in Snow Leopard.
My icons get all jumbled up into one little corner, piled on top of eachother when I am in sleep mode.
This happens when I decide to plug in my external monitor (DELL ST241) while it is in sleep mode, then come out of sleep mode by moving my mouse or hitting a key. Everything else is ok and looks great. It worked ok for awhile but the last 2 times this seems to happen!
I did a disk utility to repair permissions just in case that was the problem and it appears not. Hardly anything to repair, for that matter. When I open my laptop, the icons are the same and I have to re-arrange them.
Can I fix this problem?Don't know what happened to my pic of my icons... anyways, does anyone have some thoughts about this?

I have connected my new Macbook Air to my existing Samsung large external monitor with a VGA adaptor but I can't get the full mac desktop to display. No icons but then websites are coming up. Help! Further info: I am a complete newbie to Mac. Had three macs prior to 2000 then four PCs. Just come back and struggling a bit with the unfamiliarity. On my old PC laptop I could simply switch from the laptop screen to the large external monitor (and back) with the F4 function key. While I can get the background image from my MBA to display, that's it. Until I noticed on the far left of the external monitor, the very edge of one of the web pages I was on. So Idragged it over to display in the centre. But that's all that's there. And now I have gone out of those web pages but they are still displaying on the monitor. There is some wierd disconnect. I'm sure it is just a setting thing. Will keep searching for answer but any advice welcome!
Your dsplay is getting extended onto the external monitor. Chcnage the setting to duplicate it or only display on the external monitor and you should be fine,

How to get folders/icons in all finder areas to have the same size?
I'm trying to make the icons in all areas of my finder appear a larger size. I've managed to make this happen by going into view/view options, but it seems to change it only for that window. If I go into a different window they are the "default" size of smaller.
How do I change it so that all windows open in the same look/feel?

no. if you do this in one folder and use "set as defaults" it should apply to all folders no matter where they are located. delete the file homefolder/library/preferences/com.apple.finder.plist, control-option-click on Finder in the dock and choose "relaunch". this will reset your finder preferences. try setting default view options again.

How do I re-download my iphoto library if I can no longer find iphoto on my desktop or in my finder without loosing all of my photos?
How did you install it in the first place? If it came with your Mac, and the Mac didn't come with Lion installed, then reinstall iLife from the Applications disc that was in the box. If you no longer have that disc, you'll have to order a replacement from Apple customer service. Either that, or restore the iPhoto application from your backups.
If you got iPhoto from the App Store, you can download it again by launching the App Store application. -
How do I remove padlock icon from all my files?
On one of my drives, every single file has a little padlock icon superimposed over the file icon. I recall when I did a clean install of windows 7 RC over my Vista install, I wasn't getting write access to the drive so I had to take ownership of the drive and mess with the security settings before it started working normally.
I have to admit, I find the security settings in all versions of NT mystifying... For instance, although my account is in the administrators group, having full access to administrators never seems to work. I always have to add my individual user account and explicitly give it full access.
In any case, I can't remember exactly what it took, but after messing around with the security settings for a while, I eventually was able to have full access to the drive and have no problems reading/writing/deleting files and folders, but there's the padlock icon still on everything.
Can anyone explain how to get rid of it, and/or maybe point me to a good, clear, understandable guide on how to properly set NTFS permissions.

Hi.
I am having trouble with my iPad 1. It doesn't switch on, can't restart it, can't reset it, and can't even restore it with iTunes, as it's just no visible with iTunes at all. And yes, I have charged the battery for several hours just before doing all of this. All I see on the screen is the iTunes logo and an arrow with the picture of the cable, which suggests to connect to iTunes.
Can anyone help?
