Desktop items loose place after restart

Like many users I keep a number of items on my desktop.
I have done this for more than 20 years.
I arrange my desktop items very precisely to where I want them.
Since upgrading to lion, every time I restart the system all the
desktop items are lined up under the hard disk drive icon.
This is almost enough reason to go back to Snow Leopard. The frustration
and aggravation this causes is to much.
I am using a mid 2007 20 inch aluminum iMac.
It is embarassing as a user to have to constantly search across the internet to find answers
to sloppy programming and Apple's general indifference to ciomputers these days.
Back in the OS 9 days there was a little utility that took a snapshot of your desktop items
so if something happened you could put them back with 1 clock.
Maybe someone out there knows what the problem is and can offer a fix.
Shame on Apple.

Most likely a mucked up .DS_Store file in the Desktop folder. Do a search for .DS_Store AND baltwo in these communities and see my suggested solutions.

  • Desktop items get unsorted after cold boot on Snow Leopard 10.6.2

The Desktop items get unsorted after cold boot on Mac OS X 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard).
I have about 25 items (mostly aliases of files or folders) on the Desktop, sorted as vertical rows on left and right side of the screen.
When the issue hits, they all get located as vertical rows on the right side of the screen, unsorted in relation to their custom relative position before the issue.
    Any idea? Thanks.

    Hi ApMaX
According to wikipedia the .DS_Store files on Mac OS X contain the metadata for icon position and view settings. If the file permissions for the Desktop .DS_Store file were incorrect then one could assume that the icon position and view settings aren't being saved.
First let us check the permissions on the .DS_Store file for the Desktop we can do this by running the following command in Terminal (located in the Utilities folder)
    ls -ld /Users/<<UserName>>/Desktop/.DS_Store
replacing <<UserName>> with the short name of your user account (name as viewed in the finder sidebar)
On my system I get the following permissions readout
    -rw-------@
Further info on .DS_Store files: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/.DS_Store
If your permissions differ then we will look at correcting them.

  • Assign To "All Desktops" doesn't work after restart

Is anyone else having this problem?
I have several apps that I have assigned to show on "All Desktops"; however, after I do a restart, and these apps are magically restored, though they still claim to be assigned to "All Desktops" they only appear on the first desktop.
I have to then assign them to "This Desktop" and back again to "All Desktops" before they will actually display on all desktops.
Though I seldom restart, it is annoying to have to go through the apps and re-set their display settings each time.
I don't know if it is possibly part of the problem, but all the apps I have set to "All Desktops" I display on my second monitor (I do this so I can have things like Safari on my second monitor, and always available, no matter what I am working in on my main display).

This thread offers a solution, but it's vague and too broad: https://discussions.apple.com/message/16190593#16190593
I don't want to delete all my preferences and have to set them up again. So I did some research and I think I figured out a more targeted solution. The preferences file for Spaces in Lion is located here: ~/Library/Preferences/com.apple.spaces.plist
For some reason, ~/Library is hidden by default in Lion, so to get there you'll have to unhide it. Enter this command in Terminal: chflags nohidden ~/Library
Then, to open and edit that file, you'll need to download the XCode tools, here: http://itunes.apple.com/us/app/xcode/id448457090?mt=12
Finally, you'll want to open spaces.plist, find the line that refers to the application you're having trouble with, e.g.:
            "com.apple.finder" = "3C65046B-FA18-4983-9219-8140A2B81A41";
Change that long string of letters to "AllSpaces". Save the file and restart and (I hope) that should do it. Will report back when I've tried this. Still waiting for the rather large XCode application to download from the App Store.

  • IChat windows loose data after restart

    Hello,
If one keeps a series of ichats open and shuts down ichat and restarts the computer, after restarting ichat the windows are still open but know have a question bubble with the name of the person previously ichated with.
    using 10.6
under a previous version (10.5?), after a restart the windows reopened but with the ichats still showing. How do we get back this behavior?

    Hi,
In iChat 4 you had "Remember Open Chats across Launch" which displayed the last chats you had.
In IChat 5 you have a different setting linked to Save Transcripts.
Save Transcripts has to be On.
You can then set to Display a certain number of Chats.
This does not replicate the Remember Open Chats.
Last Chat when a Buddy is also clicked in the Buddy List will display the last chat you had with them.
The Last 25 Chats option (as with other of the numbers) will display the last chosen number of IMs from that chat (Or the last chat of another selected Buddy)
(Returning to Last Chat then only displays the Last IM).
Now as iChat 5 is a new version the .plist is rewritten the first time.
This has a direct effect on the Last Chat options.
The .plist is now missing some info about the Last Chats although it can search and display the Last Chat with a Buddy if a Buddy is clicked.
It seems to get better as time goes on about displaying Open chats on Quit like the previous version if left at Show Last Chat rather than one of the numbered choices.
    Another way to explain it.
In the File Menu of iChat you have Recent Items.
This lists the last Text Chats and Video or Audio chats you had and Saved Chats
(The Number of items displayed here is set in System Preferences > Appearance > Number of Documents)
It seems that there is a correlation between th Recent Items and the Saved Chats and the Last Chat has to be in both to replicate the "Remember Open Chats across Launch"
It is not a perfect match for the previous setting.
    It does seem to improve.
Having said that I played and tweaked mine running though all the option I could think off and then left it for a while.
Now mine seems to remember the Last Open Chat properly. (I may have beaten it in to submission)

  • Desktop Icons Change Positions After Restart

    Hi,
After I inadvertently synced my computer with another Mac computer my icons change position after restart. I was trying to sync another computer to mine.
I have tried the usual suggestions of taking out com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.desktop.plist and letting the system create these new files but the problem still persists. I also checked the Finder > View > Show View Options and arrange by none is still selected.
Does anyone have a suggestion how I can fix this problem? Will I have to go back in time with Time Machine and restore my entire system to solve this?
I can't operate with the desktop icons changing positions like this.
    Thanks,
    Pacecom

Delete the hidden .DS_Store file associated with your Desktop folder. Launch the Terminal.app (in /Applications/Utilities/), copy & paste the following command into the window that pops up, hit the return key, quit the Terminal.app, OPTION-click and hold the Dock's Finder icon, and select Relaunch:
    *rm ~/Desktop/".DS_Store"*
Now, set the Desktop as desired, log out and back in, and the Desktop should be as it was as you last set it.

  • Why 2 Desktop Windows IN Finder after RESTART?

After EVERY restart (whether internal or external drive) Two IDENTICAL windows appear in front
Each window lists two item: 1-icon and name of the internal HD (and external drive if any) AND
2- the NETWORK icon similar too what we see in the System Preferences window for internet, etc.
What kind of setting, where, needs to be altered so that does not occur.
It's happening on two different mac MINI's (to which changes have been made with software, butwhat did what.)

Found answer in another post on a different topic. Reset the startup disc preference and locked it
(had previously restarted from 3 different discs. here's the site/info
Apple.com > Support > Discussions > Mac Pro (previous to 2009) > Using your Mac Pro
Search Results » Messages: 9 - Search Terms: "network boot"
Your Mac "writes down" the preferred Startup Disk in Parameter RAM. That is often your Hard Drive, but at times it could be a CD or an external drive. You cannot eliminate the additional choices, and you would not want to. What you want to do is make a selection from all available and have that selection be remembered. If there is a remembered selection, that choice will be highlighted when you open Startup Disk preference.
Open that preference and Click on your Hard drive to select it. If you close the preference and re-open it, the Hard Drive will be still be selected. As long as there is stable power to your Mac, that preference will be remembered.

  • Desktop items get unsorted after cold boot

After a coldboot all icons are sorted in alphabetical order on the right side of the screen.
It does not matter what the previous setting of "Arrange by" was, I have tried everything including "Snap to grid" and "Unsorted".
Icon size, grid spacing, text size etc is not affected, only "Arrange by" (as in Desktop "View Options").
It´s very annoying and hampering if you have lots of icons and the desktop is a main part in your workflow (like mine).
I´m getting very frustrated and I am seriously considering downgrading to 10.5.8 again, but that will take most of the weekend and I will have to go back to running 2 separate systems for using Logic, Final Cut and Aperture, so it´s not a good option and something that I would rather not do.
The best would be of course be, if some Apple engineers could spare some time and look into this. I have sent a bug report as well.
In the meantime: Does anybody know if there is a way to automate the process of manually putting the icons back in their proper place or some other workaround?
Note: The problem is mentioned here as well:

  • Compaq Presario SR1330NX desktop. Black screen after restarting after recovery using disks

My Compaq presario SR1330NX desktop computer which has XP. Years ago I accidentally deleted the recovery partition. I ordered the recovery disks. I have done successful recoveries with them. Although it has been years. I did a recovery from disk. I dont think I did it correctly as it had been a while. Anyway, It never asked me for the 2nd disk, but it said the recovery was successful and to restart the computer. I thought that maybe it had made its own new recovery partition when using the disks before. So I restarted the computer and all I get is a black screen with compaq on it and some weird symbols in the left upper corner that look like
    >triangle,Divide sign,Square,upside down t with a line under it,zero and a weird looking capital B".
And it does NOTHING. I put disks in it does nothing. This is the only screen that comes up and nothing else works. What did I do? and How can I fix this?

Hello tinkyferret, The HP Recovery Restore disk set makes a new Recovery Partition when they are used to recover the system.
You might try the HP Recovery Restore procedure from the hard drive, if you have not, and see if it wil complete successfully.
Normally on a Compaq system, you press the F-10 key to enter the Recovery Restore utility.
Please click the White Kudos star on the left, to say thanks.

  • Desktop picture selections disappear after restart

I set up 12 different desktops using two different monitors, six spaces on one, six on the other. I select different pictures to use on each one, when I restart, the pictures revert back to Yosemite default. Also the desktops assigned  to the smaller screen also all go back to the larger screen.
I'm not sure what the issue is, never had this problem on any other Apple OS, any assistance would be greatly appreciated!

I wrote a little script for the problem of Desktop backgrounds here that should solve the problem and make it easier for you to change all backgrounds simultaneously (rather than individually) if you want. Have a look here:

  • Desktop icon arrangement moves after restart

I have folders on my desktop arranged in the way that I prefer. Every 3rd or 4th restart or shut down/start up my icons all rorder themselves and go to the right hand side of my display in 2 vertical rows (in random order).
I getting really tired of moving everything back to the arrangement I like. This never happened in SL. Most of the time I untick the "Reopen windows when logging back in" and I know I have the prolblem then. I'm honestly not sure if leaving the "Reopen" box selected would cure the problem. I don't think so but I be aware of it and see.
I've attached a screenshot of the arrangement I want to keep. Any thoughts on what's causing this and what I can do to correct it.

We're having th same problem!  Would love to know how to fix this bug?

  • Why did a desktop folder change names after restart?

I have a MacBook Air, 2011. I just restarted it, and one of my two folders I have on my desktop now has a different name. I did not change it and I live alone. What is going on?

Also, this is showing I have Mavericks, but I updated to Yosemite, so I don't know why it is showing OS X Mavericks (10.9.5).

  • Items keep resetting after restart

i've gone through the steps of changing this like dock size, loading photos onto iphoto and loading music onto itunes, after i retstart the computer, everything is lost. The files with the data are still there, but nothing has been loaded into the programs-photos gone, no music, bookmarks disappear on safari. It happens with itunes, iphoto, and ichat, perhaps some others as well. It acts as though its the first time the program has been opened. any help would be great

    Welcome to Apple Discussions!
It sounds to me that you either moved or renamed your Home folder. Don't do that!

  • Desktop items missing and cannot access Finder after Jan updates

All desktop items disappeared following the restart after updates on 25 Jan to my MacBook. I also cannot click on the desktop to access Finder. I cannot drag anything onto the desktop.
Any ideas how to recover from this? Ta.

Thanks for the feedback. Moving preference files associated with various applications, such as desktop, out of /Users/username/Library/Preferences/ to the Desktop, logging out and back in, will cause the application to create a new default version. If that fixes the problem, then the original preference file (e.g., com.apple.desktop.plist) was most likely corrupted. Good computing.

  • My recent items list appears again after restart. How do I delete it for good?

When I turn on the computer, the recent items list still displays the documents and applications I worked with a few days ago. I delete it, and after restarting the computer, it displays the same list again (not a new list, but the exact same items over and over again).  Any tips?

Select the iPod shuffle in the iTunes sidebar (under DEVICES).  If this is a current 4th (or 3rd) gen iPod shuffle, you should be able to see the contents of the shuffle by type, intented under the shuffle's name (still in the sidebar).  Select Music or Audiobooks (not sure where those items from the library will be listed).  The items will be listed to the right, for each category.  Find the items, select, and delete.
It's on page 20 of the manual
    http://manuals.info.apple.com/en_US/iPod_shuffle_4thgen_User_Guide.pdf
NOTE:  If this is an 1st or 2nd gen iPod shuffle, select the iPod shuffle in the iTunes sidebar (under DEVICES).  Over to the right, go to the Contents tab, where the items are listed.  Select and delete them from this list.
I find it more convenient to make a playlist in iTunes with things I want to put on the shuffle.  I then set up automatic syncing (or use autofill) to have iTunes load the shuffle from that playlist, automatically.

To help me better understand I was wondering if each of you can complete the following?
Go to KB36747 and download BlackBerryFix.zip
Run the tool and confirm that it says ‘The fix is not applicable to this device’
Assuming the tool states the fix was not applied, please complete the following test:
Make and receive 2 or 3 phone calls
Press the Power/Lock key followed by tapping Restart
When the device restarts do you see a blue LED?
After the device restarts, check the Hub and Phone app to identify if the calls made and received during step 1 still appear. Should this calls be missing, please capture logs using the steps below.
    Open the Help app
Swipe down from the top of the screen, tap Create Report
    Tap Save Log Snapshot
If prompted to upload logs, tap No
After completing these steps, using File Manager on your device go to Documents folder by Logs.
Tap and hold the log file (i.e. bbswltLog-<date>.zip) followed by tapping Share and send it via email to supportforums{at}blackberry.com.
If I can ask, what other type of data disappears? If you create a document using Docs to Go and save it to your device memory, does restarting your device result in document being removed from your device?
