Desktop items rearranged after download!

Strange thing is happening to my desktop! When I download items to the desktop, other items there get rearranged and messed up. They're not in the order I had them prior to downloading. What is going on?

Positioning Desktop icons, too close to the edge of the screen, will cause them to reposition themselves on restart, or when adding more items.
Positioning them too close to each other, will cause this as well.
Depending on how many you have displayed, and the size of your screen, the Size of the icons, as well as the Text size & Label position can also factor in. Experiment with these settings.
My Desktop icons do not reposition themselves, and this is how I have my Desktop View Options set.
Icon size: 32 x 32
Text size: 12 pt
Label position: Bottom
I have none of the following options selected.
Snap to grid
Show item info
Show icon preview
Keep arranged by
A different configuration may work for you. Experiment with the options until you find something suitable.
Click on an open area of your Desktop.
From the Finder's Toolbar, position your cursor over "View" and pull down to "Show View Options", and click. Or use the Command + J keys.

Xfce desktop items rearrange themselves between reboots

Hello, I am a new Arch Linux user and this is my first thread. Please pardon any possible mistakes I made on this post.
Almost every time Xfce starts the desktop icons are rearranged. After searching the wiki, I found this:

So after deleting the said files, I restarted Xfce. The problem was not gone.
Then I noticed that it was more complicated: I think it's not the desktop item positions that are changing, but the desktop's margins.
Not all icons are rearranged; only those on the right and the bottom sides of the desktop, the last collumns and rows.
In /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0-1350x728.rc these files' positions change back to row=0 col=0 and cannot be placed back to their original location.
The next time I restart Xfce the inaccesible spaces on the desktop are ok once again, and I place the items there. Then the problem repeats itself.
Is there any configuration file I should have manually edited?
I'm using Xfce, xfwm with compositing enabled, and no conky or any other desktop decorations.

EDIT: This might be actually caused by removing USB flash drives while the computer is shut down. The mentioned file is not changed, ergo a mess is caused when it's read on startup. I can't confirm this, though.
EDIT #2: No, it happened again, and I had not removed any usb flash drives.

Go to ~/Library/Preferences. Move the com.apple.desktop.plist file to the Trash.
Restart your Mac.
~ (Tilde) represents your Home folder.

Losing Desktop Items/Documents after shutting down and restarting

Twice, over the last couple of months after shutting down and restarting my macbook, everything on my desktop gets deleted, and it seems all the settings go back to their original form?
Anyone have this problem?

Hi, I had this problem and it was due to setting file vault in the security settings. I removed having that set and then I had to go into system settings, Account and under Login Items, add back items such as mail and things that required passwords that were not coming up on my dock after each time I shut down.

I tried t download a more recet version of safari. Wen i went o ope it it aidits nt compaibleformy oprating system. My old safari as one so i donloddgooglchrome. i didnt like all the pop ups so i trid to donload Firefox. my computer froze at that so i restarted my computer and when it came back up my desktop is gone. its there if I open in safe mode. I ran disk utility but it didnt help. I downloaded the Correct safari in safe mode but cant access it in regular mode. How do I restore my desktop. I have time machine and a back up drive

You shouldn't undergo such effort when you don't really know what you are doing. Now, you need to do the following:
Clean Install of Snow Leopard
Be sure to make a backup first because the following procedure will erase
the drive and everything on it.
     1. Boot the computer using the Snow Leopard Installer Disc or the Disc 1 that came
         with your computer. Insert the disc into the optical drive and restart the computer.
         After the chime press and hold down the "C" key. Release the key when you see
         a small spinning gear appear below the dark gray Apple logo.
     2. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue
         button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu.
         After DU loads select the hard drive entry from the left side list (mfgr.'s ID and drive
         size.) Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window. Set the number of
         partitions to one (1) from the Partitions drop down menu, click on Options button
         and select GUID, click on OK, then set the format type to MacOS Extended
         (Journaled, if supported), then click on the Apply button.
     3. When the formatting has completed quit DU and return to the installer. Proceed
         with the OS X installation and follow the directions included with the installer.
     4. When the installation has completed your computer will Restart into the Setup
         Assistant. After you finish Setup Assistant will complete the installation after which
         you will be running a fresh install of OS X. You can now begin the update process
         by opening Software Update and installing all recommended updates to bring your
         installation current.
Download and install Mac OS X 10.6.8 Update Combo v1.1.

Desktop items disappeared after installing Apple OS X security update

I downloaded and installed Apple's new OS X security update (15 Sep 2008) for Power PC that became available via software update feature today.
When I restarted the computer as advised at the end of installation, my hard drive icon and all other desktop files disappeared. Safari works. In Apple menu, the shut down feature only works when Safari is active. Force quit feature shows Safari as the only item while Finder items keeps flashing and disappearing.

First, I tried the approach of 'safe booting'. The menu items on the top kept flickering and I could not get into either the 'applications' folder or the "users" folder.
Then, I saw your advice to pj3 on another thread about re-running the install disc that came with the computer. I did not have to run all the other steps because re-installing the system with the standard instructions took care of the problem. The hard drive and other desktop files as well as the finder re-appeared.

Desktop is black after downloading 10.8.3 and running external monitor color calibration

I downloaded 10.8.3 and ran Spectraview ll to calibrate my external NEC monitor. At the end of the process, which seemed to be successful, the desktop is black, making it impossible to use because text is not readable. I used System Preferences to reset the desktop color to a mid-gray; choose color but nothing happens.

My display is working great - and I've been through the 10.82 update, the 10.8.2 update, etc., but no firmware update (your's was likely Retina-specific).
Your ATB should just be pug-and-play. Since you're still under warranty, I would contact AppleCare and possibly setup and appointment with the Genius Bar folks at your local Apple Store: something's not right - whether it's you display or your notebook.

Launchpad items rearrange after restart

I got all my stuff in Launchpad just the way I want it but after a Restart, everything got completely re-arranged! Ker-blooey!!
Is this a known bug? Is there a known fix to it?

Desktop items spontaneously rearranged

I am used to arrange the items in my desktop in "clumps." I would go between an external 1080P display (set as main) at home and the MacBook Pro 15" display while on the go, and before Lion, nothing weird has happened to my desktop.
Recently my desktop started rearrange itself at random times. I have not been able to isolate the problem, but it seems to start occurring after I upgraded to Lion. Has anyone gotten the same problem as well?

Have you gone to your View menu in Finder and chose "Sort by" "None"?

SpyHunter 4 is not working as usual on my desktop computer; Kaspersky Antivirus is not working properly on my laptop. Both changes occured after downloading Firefox 4. What should I do

SpyHunter is set up to run everyday when I turn on my desktop computer. My Desktop runs Windows 5.1. We usually get around 80-100 low level "spy things" that show up and Spy Hunter removes them. Yesterday, after downloading Firefox 4 we got no malware spy hits. Today, we got one, but we got a message that said we had to restart our computer to remove the malware. We restarted and Spy Hunter just wanted to scan again. We stopped the scan.
Kaspersky Antivirus is set up on my laptop (running Windows 7). After I downloaded Firefox 4, I get a message that states that Kaspersky Antivirus is not turned on. When I open the Action Center of Kaspersky, I shows that the Anti-virus protection is turned off. The rest (firewall, updates, spyware protection, internet security settings, account control are all still "on").
I find it really strange and somehow connected to the downloading of Firefox 4 since both my desktop and my laptop now have problems with my SpyHunter and Kaspersky.
Can I, or should I go back to the earlier version? If so, how do I do that?

Some third-party vendors do not update their products until after the release of a new browser. That is a shame in that they could have tested for compatibility during the alpha and beta testing period (about one year in the case of Firefox 4). The third-party vendor/developer is responsible for keeping their product(s) compatible with new browsers.
You will need to contact your third-party vendor and complain as a paying customer who is not getting what they paid for.

Several months ago I installed the Firefox Home app on my iPhone to sync the bookmarks that I had on my Windows XP home computer. It has worked just fine until a few days ago. Click on the Firefox button then select Options to open the Options dialog. Now go to the Sync panel for the option to setup a new account.

Hello, my iphoto on my mac OS X Version 10.5.8 will not launch after talking with an apple support tech. She had me sinc my iphone to my mac desktop and my photos downloaded from my iphone and were at the bottom. Now the iphoto will not launch.

The pictures downloaded from my iphone and after disconnecting from the Apple help, my iphoto had disappeared from the very bottom of the screen and will not launch. Desktop items get unsorted after cold boot on Snow Leopard 10.6.2

The Desktop items get unsorted after cold boot on Mac OS X 10.6.2 (Snow Leopard).
I have about 25 items (mostly aliases of files or folders) on the Desktop, sorted as vertical rows on left and right side of the screen.
When the issue hits, they all get located as vertical rows on the right side of the screen, unsorted in relation to their custom relative position before the issue.
Any idea? Thanks.

According to wikipedia the .DS_Store files on Mac OS X contain the metadata for icon position and view settings. If the file permissions for the Desktop .DS_Store file were incorrect then one could assume that the icon position and view settings aren't being saved.
First let us check the permissions on the .DS_Store file for the Desktop we can do this by running the following command in Terminal (located in the Utilities folder)
ls -ld /Users/<<UserName>>/Desktop/.DS_Store
replacing <<UserName>> with the short name of your user account (name as viewed in the finder sidebar)
On my system I get the following permissions readout
-rw-------@

If your permissions differ then we will look at correcting them.

I also have the same problem, but the Software Updates tool doesn't recognise that Quicktime is out of date. Have you tried downloading Quicktime 7.7 Leopard from http://support.apple.com/downloads/#quicktime as this worked for me...?
