Desktop MGR won't load

I had to reinstall DM. When attempting to load I get a message saying a problem with "Rim.DeskTop Helper" and it shuts down. I tried doing a fresh download. I have searched and searched. Hope I get some advice here.
Any ideas?

Sorry that was not very clear. I formatted my pc. Loaded all the programs I had previously. I went to BB.ca to get Desktop Mgr. The DL goes fine. The install is about 99% complete and then I get a message regarding  "Rim.DeskTop Helper" and it must shut down. I saw this issue many times as I was looking for a solution.
I was attempting to get the latest ver of DM
Would an earlier ver work?

  • Too many files on 10.4 Desktop - Finder won't load

    2.66 DualCore Intel Xeon + OSX 10.4.10 + 2Gb DDR2 DIMM + 230Gb ST3250820AS + OPTIARC DVD RW AD-7170A
Despite recurrent warnings, a relative kept leaving too many files on the Desktop, up to 300 files (JPGs, downloaded archives). Last week, after attempting to move/copy them to a folder, OSX crashed, and now Finder won't load; after password screen, menu bar and Dock appear, the 'MyDay' app (from Entourage) starts bouncing, and system freezes. Sometimes it goes back to password screen, and from there again to a frozen, empty finder with dead mouse pointer. Other times the spinning clock or wheel remain spinning forever.
Tried DiskUtility, repaired disk and permissions, reset PRAM, no dice.
Tried to boot off the 10.4.10 DVD, it doesn't allow to run OSX from the disc (I have a vague recollection of doing this once, but...)
Started in SafeBoot mode, finder froze at same stage.
Re-Installed OSX 10.4.10 in Archive and Install mode, same freeze at same stage.
The only explanation for the crash, as no updates/new app installing happened, is that there are, again, too many loose files on the desktop and as it tries to load the Finder it crashes. I'm hauling the machine ASAP to try with my own Intel to try access his disk via FireWire target mode but worry the same thing will happen on my system, that it will balk at too many files.
Is there a way to try to fix this without resorting to clean install (needless to say, last backup was months ago)? If I install Leopard on that disk (it comes out fine in Disk Utility) will the same thing happen as soon as it tries to load the Finder? Is there a way to boot 10.4 off a CD/DVD?
Thanks for any info or tips!

    Welcome to the forums!
Make your relative write this out 1000 times:
Performance tip: Keep the Desktop clutter-free (empty, if possible)
Mac OS X's Desktop is the de facto location for downloaded files, and for many users, in-progress works that will either be organized later or deleted altogether. The desktop can also be gluttonous, however, becoming a catch-all for files that linger indefinitely.
Unfortunately - aside from the effect of disarray it creates - keeping dozens or hundreds of files on the Desktop can significantly degrade performance. Not necessarily because the system is sluggish with regard to rendering the icons on the desktop and storing them in memory persistently (which may be true in some cases), but more likely because keeping an excessive number of items on the Desktop can cause the windowserver process to generate reams of logfiles, which obviously draws resources away from other system tasks. Each of your icons on your desktop is stored as a window in the window server, not as an alias. The more you have stored, the more strain it puts on the window server. Check your desktop for unnecessary icons and clear them out.
Keeping as few items as possible on the Desktop can prove a surprisingly effective performance boon. Even creating a single folder on your Desktop and placing all current and future clutter inside, then logging out and back in can provide an immediately noticeable speed boost, particularly for the Finder.
And it is why Apple invented 'Stacks' for Leopard.

I have downloaded and removed Desktop mgr at least 6 times and can not even get it to recognize my phone.

  • Desktop Mgr won't sync, install, modify or repair

    Maybe a sledgehammer would work.
I have a BB 8800, and have been using BDM 4.2.1.8 (because anything newer wouldn't work so I went back to this version) on a Vista PC until recently.  It was set to automatically sync when connected.  Then it stopped doing that with no hint of an error message or anything else - I opened up the Sync window and clicked the Sync Now button - nothing.  *sigh*  Finally decided to uninstall / reinstall, but that's not going any better.
I get an error message half way through the installer / installer:
"Error 2738 Could not access VBScript run time for custom action" (custom??  If you say so . . .)
I have searched these boards and have tried the suggestions.  I can't complete the Clean Uninstall instructions the uninstall won't complete, from both the Windows control panel "remove" and with the 7Zip-decompressed Windows Installer Package Blackberry Desktop Software (.msi), as recommended somewhere in this forum.
    Help.  Please.

    Hi,
I agreed with the sledgehammer when I saw that it was Vista (Sorry couldn't resist, XP diehard!)
I Googled "Error 2738 Could not access VBScript run time for custom action" it's pretty well referenced.
This was a solution in two different forums. I have also read threads on this error here.

  • Blackberry Desktop Manager won't load applications

    Hi there,
When I connect my Blackberry Curve 9360 to Desktop Manager, it connects fine and everything else works fine too; except when I click on the "Applications" tab, nothing shows up. I'm not able to see any apps or input languages on the screen.
I tried uninstalling and reinstalling Desktop Manager, syncing my device, backing it up, and I even made sure my Blackberry Appworld account was ok as well as checking if all my apps were running properly.
When I go to Options > Third Party Applications on my Curve, nothing loads there either. I can see my applications on Blackberry App World though.
    Please help.
    Sincerely,
    Brian

  • Desktop mgr won't sync contacts

I just got a BB Bold 9650 from Verizon.  I have an iMac running the newest version of Snow Leopard.  I downloaded the Desktop manager and it sync'd my calendars and notes but not my contacts.  Contacts is grayed out and it has this message:
Contacts are currently configured for wireless synchronization.
To synchronize Contacts with BB Desktop Manager, turn off wireless synchronization by opening Address Book on your device and from the Options menu, selecting your address book and changing the Wireless Synchronization field to NO.  Reconnect your device and try synchronizing your data again.
The only options I get are to sort and separate views or allow duplicate names or confirms deletes.
I've clicked on every tab and button I can find and there are no wireless sync options anywhere.  The user's manual that came with the phone and the PDF manual are both pretty useless.  It is like they were designed for a different phone running a different os because I can't seem to find half of what I am looking for by following their instructions.
This is very frustrating because one of the main reasons I went with the BB is because they advertised that their phone would sync to the mac address book and calendars.

Probably the most infuriating two hours of my life. Im trying to sync my contacts from an iphone to this balcberry. Am I the only person who feels this shouldn't be this ridiculously difficult? They're contacts. Im surprised that I can't just drag and drop my address book. I'm thinking of taking this archaic lump of turd back and getting an android. May not be secure but at least it'll work. COME ON RIM!!! This is the very poor. Very friggin poor. These are contacts! Maybe you deserve to sink if you can't figure out contacts!
The desktop software doesn't even lead you to the right folder? WTF? Get your **bleep** sorted out already. Why doesn't it tell me to go to 'contacts' as there isn't an address book on the phone leading to confusion. Are you all asleep at the wheel? This is not a smartphone. Its a frutration generator!

  • Palm desktop software won't load

I got a new Palm Zire for Christmas. I have not used a Palm with my PBg4 previously. I installed the software from the CD and when I opened the Palm Desktop I got the spinning beach ball....I repaired permissions, removed and reinstalled -- same thing. I spent an hour on the phone with Palm Support. Reinstalled several times - same thing... They had me install in the root user. It worked fine in the root user, but not in MY user login. They finally said it was an Apple problem. I'm not convinced, because I've installed lots of other software with no problems. But thought this might be the place to start in seeking a solution.
BTW - the hotsync works fine. My events that I transfered from the palm to the palm desktop show up. I just can't DO anything in the desktop on the computer.
    Thanks...

That .sit file is a compressed file that you need to expand using Stuffit Expander. Check your Applications > Utilities folder and make sure you have Stuffit in there (you probably do).
The following Q & A is from Stuffit Expander's Help File and explains more:
Q: When I download files from the internet, my web browser doesn't launch StuffIt Expander to open them.
A: In many cases StuffIt Expander will be used automatically by your Web browser to expand files immediately after they are downloaded, but you can also expand files by dragging and dropping either onto the StuffIt Expander icon or into the "Drag Window" that appears when you launch StuffIt Expander. This kind of manual expansion is needed when your Web browser fails to call upon StuffIt Expander, or when the file comes as an email attachment or other non-Web source.
    Good luck.

  • Can't log in - desktop won't load

Hi, and thanks for reading this. I hope someone here can help me.
I have a G4 flat-panel iMac, running 10.2.8. Bought brand new in 2002 and have had no problems, with the exception of the hard drive going out a few months later and replaced under warranty. (Apparently a few of the dual-boot machines had this problem.) They also upgraded the OS to 10.2.8 and the computer has run beautifully ever since. Until the other night.
I was online and the modem disconnected but Internet Connect kept displaying "Disconnecting". This happens on occasion and the only way out of it is to shut down the computer and restart. So I did, and when the computer restarted I could not log in. The computer started as usual and seemed fine, the log-in screen appeared, I entered my password, the computer said "logging in", a blue screen appeared briefly... and then kicked back to the login screen. The desktop never appeared.
After several tries of that, I decided to reset my password (with the system CD). It let me reset my password and the computer recognized the fact I had changed my password. (You know how the log-in screen "shakes" to signal a wrong password - that never happened.) I tried to log in again and it said "logging in"... and returned to the log-in screen. The same thing happened when I tried the root user account.
I was able to start up from my Norton CD and changed the startup disk to 9.2. In 9.2, I can see the contents of my hard drive including my User folder in OS X and everything that had been on my desktop in OS X is right there in the "desktop" folder for my user name. I can move, copy, and delete things there. It's all there; the desktop just won't load when I start in OS X.
I don't know if it helps, but in 9.2, the computer recognizes my ZIP drive, CDs, and my Wacom tablet and mouse.
I have gone through the discussion boards and articles here and cannot find where anyone else has had the exact same problem. I have tried the possible solutions below, and none of them have changed anything:
    * Norton Utilities (Disk Doctor) - fixed some minor errors, then ran it again and no problems were found.
    * Safe Boot - I couldn't get the mouse to work, and when I figured out the keyboard "shortcuts" to log in, I got the same thing as before... "logging in" and then getting kicked back to the log-in screen.
    * Disk Utility (from the Mac OS X install CD) - it fixed a couple things then said that my hard drive appeared to be okay.
    * fsck (single-user mode) - it said that "Macintosh HD appears to be OK". So at least the hardware seems okay.
    * Rebuilding desktop - a long shot but I figured it was worth a try; nothing changed.
    * Reset privileges (single-user mode) - as far as I can see, nothing changed even after doing this.
    * Startup items (folder) - nothing seems out of place.
    * Disable log-in items - I still couldn't log in
    * In single-user mode: when trying one of the suggestions from an article here, I typed "cd/Users/{my user name}/Library, then mv Preferences Preferences_old, and received a message stating "no such file or directory."
Looking through the contents of my hard drive, I can see that there is a Desktop icon for OS 9, but not anything for OS X. In theory, shouldn't there also be a desktop icon for OS X? Has my computer somehow lost its "connection" or "map" to my OS X desktop? I ran fsck again today so that I could look at logs/parse failed/plist/etc (an article I found here on apple.com) and following those steps, I noticed there was a line that said "root device is mounted read-only." So I can only assume that has to do with the fact my OS X desktop doesn't load.
So, with all that being said (it's a lot, I know, and I hope it all makes sense) ... Is this problem something simple that I can fix myself, or do I need to take it into the shop and have a technician look at it? As you can imagine, this is all getting very frustrating, with limited access to an old version of Photoshop, SimpleText, and a very old web browser that only works on a few sites (and thankfully Apple.com is one of them). I miss my OS X.
Thanks again for reading this, and for any advice/assistance you may be able to provide.

Thanks, Anna. Excellent work. Everything seems fine, except, of course, the booting OS X part.
    First try Resetting the PRAM
    • Shut down the computer.
    • Locate the following keys: Command, Option, P, and R. You will need to hold these keys down simultaneously later.
    • Turn on the computer.
    • Press and hold the Command + Option + P + R keys immediately after the startup chime.
    • Hold keys down until you hear the startup chime for the third time.
    • Release the keys and immediately and allow computer to boot.
The fact that you can boot in Safe Mode suggests that you may have a Login item that conflicts with the startup process. If resetting PRAM does not work try this:
    Boot computer in Safe Mode.
If you are able to get into the Login items (Apple Menu > System Preferences > Accounts > Login Items) make a note of all the log in items (write it down). Then delete them all by selecting each one in turn and clicking the minus sign under the list. Shut down and try booting the computer normally. If you are able to boot successfully add the Login items on your list one by one and try rebooting each time you have added one. This should help you isolate the offending item.
I hope one of these methods works. Post back and let me know.

  • Desktop Mgr 6 - "Music services failed to load"

    I've got a T-Mobile Curve 8520.
This afternoon I uninstalled Desktop Mgr 5.0.1 and Office 2007 (with Outlook). I then installed Office 2010 (with Outlook), and finally installed the new Desktop Manager 6.0.0.
Almost everything works, but when I try to go to the Music page in the new Desktop Manager I see this:
    Music services failed to load
    An unexpected error occurred.
I've confirmed that the media card is enabled to act as a Mass Storage Device. I've rebooted the laptop, and shut down and restarted the 8520. I've closed and opened and closed Outlook and Windows Media Player. Desktop Manager is configured to use WMP, not iTunes.
Does anybody have any ideas as to how to fix this?
    Thanks,
    Steve
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Thanks, I didn't even think of looking there. (Sure feel dumb now! )
An error I see in the log states "INNER EXCEPTION: System.ArgumentOutOfRangeException -- MESSAGE: Specified argument was out of the range of valid values". The parameter involved relates to a path. It occurred to me that the problem may be due to my music library being stored on a NAS and not the local hard drive, so I removed that library and only used a music library on my D: drive (same physical drive as C: ), but the problem remained.
If I set the Desktop Manager software to use iTunes the music pane loads without problem.

  • Downgrade probs with desktop mgr: app loader retrieves old version files thru internet

really this is for desktop mgr 4.6 and 4.7 but i could not write to thread some time ago i purchased documents to go premium. unfortunately at first dataviz was insiting it would only be available OTA, after install, and later after os upgrade to patch .055 of RIM OS 4.5, at first it wanted to downgrade documents premium to go to the base edition that is included in the OS. then i was using desktop mgr 4.2 or 4.3 this cost me some 20 eur for reupgrade OTA, great, guys then i found the same solution which another thread quotes, i.e. to prevent downgrading by renaming the base alx/cod file for docs to go in the loader directory (common files, rim , shared or such, also there is a cache directory) this helped for a while then i met this text by dataviz, which was suggesting RIM had "fixed" the downgrading issue in desktop mgr 4.7 well cheers after installing it (and i have two pcs, on both of which i had to field the same obnoxious tragedy), the device was telling me it wanted to downgrade documents to go. dataviz smartly suggested i should rename the backupfile of docs to go, reboot the device and delete docs to go base edition and reboot again. now obviously, the base edition can t be deleted, since it is part of the OS base of RIM OS 4.5 (after uninstall) but even better: i was NOT able to reupgrade (i now had some desktop installer files for the premium edition) NOT AT ALL even reupgrading OTA would bring back the same stupid !requirement" from desktop mgr to downgrade docs to go dataviz was maintaining, their "fix" was crucial and works. but it does not. some 30 hours later, by accident i found the cause. my BB has OTA switched off. NOWHERE on the pc could i found traces of the old docs to go loader... really nowhere ? no, ALMOST NOWHERE. in temporary internet files there suddenly were some. and it had a url. so the app loader is trying to retrieve the old files from the BB OS vault. i unplugged the pc from the internet, and viola, the upgrade works again. and, sure enough, reconnecting it to the internet, the app loader immediately wants to downgrade the SW again. how abt fixing this. the user should be able to control, what version he wants to have, and also there should be control over whether i want the app loader to retrieve SW from the internet. (and of course dataviz should supply their SW for desktop installers, not just OTA, since the adventure cost me some 40 eur in total for useless OTA reupgrades, which i am not responsible for)

not exactly true is maybe this problem.
but in those 30 hours i was NOT able to erase the application AT ALL
pull on battery or legs. it CANNOT be highlighted for deletion, even after clearing cache and uninstalling pdf to go and documents to go either thru options adv options applications or thru app mgr.
but it absolutely can t be that RIM is leaving this matter as it is

  • Desktop Mgr: Music services failed to load.

Hello, I've tried to reinstall the desktop manager, formatted the 16GB Media Card, in the Memory section of the Options (Compression - Disabled, Media Card Support - On, Media Transfer Protocol - On, Mass Storage Mode - On, Auto Enable Mass Storage Mode When Connnected - Yes).
I can sync Pictures, Videos, Calendar, Contacts, Tasks.  However, when I select Music from Media Sync I get "Music Services Failed to Load "An unexpected error occurred."

The logfile was extremely big.  BTW, I attached the entire log in the email replay.
    Also I'm running iTunes 10.4.1.10.
