Desktop oddities when trashing file or folder

Okay, this isn't a big deal, but it disturbs my normal way of using the computer.
When I press Command-Delete for a file or folder I've selected on the Desktop it moves it to the trash.
However THEN the Finder selects the "next" file or folder on the Desktop?
Why? This is stupid.
{I upgraded from SL to ML, so maybe I missed something}

Okay, I created a dummy account called dummy and switched to that. As clean of an account as it could be, since the fun of signing up for an iCloud account/Apple ID appeared. Still did it. Signed back into my regular account, still doing it. I do have a number of files/folders on my Desktop, but not like some crazy people, and I have an alias for the harddrive there too. What I've noticed is that the sequence almost makes sense... so, I select a file, press Command-Delete, that file moves to the trash, and another file that was the most recent one created on the desktop is the next selected. Weird, huh? I think it's just a matter of playing with the "Sort By" and "Clean Up By" options unde View, but it's still bugging me since I have to deselect a file/folder after trashing a previous one.
Meh, still no big deal.

  • Finder / Desktop "Flashes" When Moving Files to Trash

When I move files from an open window across the desktop into the trash, the finder seems to quickly flash a bunch of what looks like file icons.  Anyone ever seen this?  Any way to fix it?  It does not seem cause any issues - just annoying...

    John...
Try moving these .plist files to the Trash from ~/Library/Preferences
    com.apple.finder.plist
    com.apple.desktop.plist
    Restart your Mac.

  • Driving me nuts: no path above "Desktop" when choosing file or folder with "Move To" command

Hi all. I can't believe this. I have a folder open in Bridge CC and I want to move files from that folder to a folder on another drive. The target folder does not appear in "Recent Folders", "Favorites" or "Libraries", so I select "Choose File or Folder". Upon doing this a crummy little window appears, the top level of which is "Desktop". Huh? How do I select another drive? So far the only workaround I have found is to first open the target folder in Bridge, then close it again and reselect the source folder, at which point it shows up in "Recent Folders". Please tell me it is I who am stupid and that this cannot be true.
    TIA,
    Toby

Super! 10 points to you! Many thanks

  • Catalog corruption when moving files in folder view

LR 1.3.1 MacOS 10.5 (although also happened with 10.4)
I've been using LR since the free beta and have over 6,000 images in my catalog. I shoot Nikon cameras almost always in RAW + JPEG. I used to add the jpegs as separate images, but now use them as my previews.
I recently became low on space on my system hard drive and attached an external FW 800 500GB disk that I decided to store my photos on. Using LR, using the folder view, I moved my images from the hard drive onto the external FW disk. Now, all the NEF's that I imported as NEF+JPEG are "corrupted". Specifically, when I look at them in Grid view, the thumbnails look "OK", however underneath the file name (eg: _DSCXXXX) it now says "JPG+JPEG" instead of "NEF+JPEG". When I go into Edit mode to look at the preview though, the initial image looks "normal" however I get a message saying "Rendering: Settings changed ..." and then the image looks ..... weird, perhaps cross processed or something, and then going back to Grid mode the thumbnail is now changed. If I say to show the file in Finder, it shows me the JPG file, not the NEF file. It's like the NEF file has disappeared. All the NEF's that I loaded without the accompanying JPEG are fine.
I had the same problem over 1 year ago and we filed a bug against LR but never heard anything back. I'm hoping that someone else has encountered this problem and can suggest how to fix the corrupted database. Otherwise, I will have to revert to a backup catalog and try "re-finding" the files on the new FW drive.
    Thanks,
    Janice

I'm simply using the JPEG's as previews so there is no separate "file" in LR for them so I can't delete them from LR. I suppose I could delete all the files out of the catalog and reimport them .... that sounds fun ... since they are keyworded and some are modified it makes more sense to revert to a backup and hope I can refind them. Perhaps deleting the ... Previews.lrdata file (not folder) might do it as you suggest but I'm a bit reticent just yet.
I don't want to take this thread off topic, but will have to look around a bit to find out why someone would not want to have both as "originals" as you indicate.
Thanks for taking the time to suggest,
    Janice

  • I have a folder and 3 files stuck on my desktop.  When I drag them to the trash I am asked to enter my administrator's password.  I do this but the files and folder will not delete.  I have checked 'Get Info' on each of them and they are not locked?

I have an empty folder and 3 .jpg files stuck on my desktop.  When I drag them to the trash I am asked to enter my administrator's password.  I do this but the files and folder will not delete.  I have checked 'Get Info' on each of them and they are not locked and I have full read & write access.  Grateful for any assistance in solving this problem.

    Back up all data.
Triple-click anywhere in the line below to select it:
    ls -@Oaen De* | open -f -a TextEdit
Copy the selected text to the Clipboard (command-C).
Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
Paste into the Terminal window (command-V).
A TextEdit window will open with the output of the command. Post the contents of that window, if any — the text, please, not a screenshot. The title of the window doesn't matter, and you don't need to post that.
If any personal information appears in the output, anonymize before posting, but don’t remove the context.

  • I recently thought I was updating my Safari browser. When completed, I put all those little files that were on the desktop into the trash. Now my trash is saying it can't be emptied because there are locked files and I don't know how to unlock them

I recently thought I was updating my Safari browser. When completed, I put all those little files that were on the desktop into the trash. Now my trash is saying it can't be emptied because there are locked files and I don't know how to unlock them or get them out of my trash and they keep multiplying. And to make matters worse, I tried renaming them as pdf files thinking that might do the trick.

oh boy ! I'd ask you if you knew what kind of files they were or where they came from, but I don't think you could help me a bunch. Try going to the Utilities folder and running Disk Utilities.  If you want to empty the Trash and it won't empty, go to the finder and choose "secure Empty trash". Worse case scenario-you may have to reinstall Snow Leopard, but I don't know what else to suggest. If you have a DVD of Snow Leopard, boot up from that,  and reinstall the OS. This will not touch the stuff you have on your Hard Drive, then you can update from 10.6 to 10.6.8, otherwise Onyx? Maybe those files are part of the OS which needs them to keep running.  if you hold down the Shift key on reboot, you can reboot in Safe mode and maybe you can take the files out of the trash that way
    good luck

  • Sound Buzz when transferring file from Trash to desktop

I get the occasional Sound Buzz when transferring file from Trash to desktop
Its a Short "grounding" buzz similar to slowly plugging an electric guitar when the amp is on, but its loud !
I am just using the internal sound,

Brett - thanks for that input, but as stated in my original post this happens whether I do the copy within Finder, or from inside Bridge.
Your note did inspire me to try one thing though: I UN-checked my Bridge preference to export caches to folders when possible, then I went to the folder I was trying to move (on the NAS) and did Tools > Cache > Purge Cache. I found that if the folder contained only files and no other folders, then I could move the folder to my desktop. However, if the folder in question had nested folders, then I still run into the same conflict.
Question: since this conflict does not happen when moving a folder from one computer to another computer (but only from the NAS to a computer), I'm not sure how your logic holds when you say "Bridge is trying to cache the files you are moving and creates a ".BridgeCacheT" file before the remote version is copied"
To answer your other question, we use AFP or at least is says "afp://server.local" when we connect. My apologies for not being an expert on this. The icon of the NAS on the desktop looks like the icons for the other computers.
Thanks, I'm still trying to solve this. It's really become a major problem for us as we now have to drag files individually (rather than by folder) when we want to do something with them. -- Jim

  • Lost all my desktop items when transfered it to a folder in Mahintos HD, Plz Help

There were photographs and videos of my new born baby on desktop, I did drag and drop to move all the desktop items to a folder in Machintos HD, Then I shut down the machine, after some time when I restarted that folder is not reflecting my files and all files from my desktop are gone and i can't find files even in finder but HD volume is same as b4, so I am sure the file is not deleted, its not even there in Trash, I use imac27 osx 10.9.5, It would be very kind act of yours if you can help me retrieve my new born baby's photographs and videos, very precious to me

Restore from  your Time Machine backup, assuming these photos are precious to you then you should have been backing up the computer. If you have not then the files may still be on the machine,  you just need t search for them. Use a search tool such as Find Any File to help locate them.

  • Copy new file when dropped in one folder to another

    Hi!
I have two folders, FolderA and FolderB
When a file is dropped in FolderA I want it to be copied to FolderB.
FolderA will contain other items, I only want to copy new files as they are dropped in FolderA regardless of what else is in either Folder and without copying the entire contents of FolderA.
This seems such a simple request but I cannot fathom it out.
    Any suggestions greatly received.
    Thanks
    Colin

make the following folder action attached to folder A. (I tested it and it works).
on adding folder items to this_folder after receiving added_items
    tell application "Finder"
    try
duplicate added_items to folder "B" of folder "Desktop" of folder "username" of folder "Users" of startup disk
    end try
    end tell
    end adding folder items to
In place of "username" put the name of your home directory. Also the above script works if folder B sits on the desktop. If it's somewhere else, modify the path in the above script.
    Hope this helps.

  • Files in folder on desktop are invisible

Every time I move a folder from one macbook to another macbooks desktop the files in the folder becomes invisible! I have a wireless network via airport extreme. I connect to server ›my other macbook‹ and drop the folder on my other macbooks desktop. If I ›browse‹ over to my other macbook I can see the folder fine with all its content, but when I am physically on my other macbook the folder is empty! Opening that folder in application ›whatsize‹ I see the files. So what is going on here?
A bit of trial and error shows that it is only happening when I place the folder on my other macbooks desktop. If I place the folder in another location on my other macbook everything is working just fine. Sometimes ›one out of five maybe‹ when moving a folder of files from one macbook to my other macbook a few files will be visible while the others remain invisible to the Finder.
I have gone around the problem by zipping the folder first and then unzipping it on my other macbooks desktop, this way all files are visible in the folder on my other macbook.
Not an end of the world problem but I would like to learn how to fix this problem.
    Thanks,
    Fridge

There has been a problem with Finder properly updating the contents of folders, especially those on the Desktop, pretty much forever in Tiger. The first time I saw it was when Tiger was new and people would unzip a folder on the Desktop, open the folder and see....nothing. The files were actually all there and could be viewed perfectly well from Terminal, for instance, but Finder didn't show them. As I recall, people took to creating a new folder or dragging an existing file inside the "blank" folder and the contents would magically appear. Sometimes you can force the Finder to update by relaunching it. Or, as you discovered, don't send things to the Desktop.

  • Password required when placing file in Trash?

    Hello everyone!
Since upgrading to Maverick, I am required to enter my password each time I want to place a file in the trash. Also, it automatically empties the trash, rather than just placing it in there for me to empty the trash manually. How can I fix this?
I'm really NOT a computer geek, so please bear with me and keep it simple!

  • TS4153 few files and folder are not deleting from trash folder

i am trying to delete all files and folders from the trash folder by clicking  empty securely, but its not deleteing the files anf folder. please suggest how to clean the trash folder by deleteing all the deleted files and folder.

Securely deleting items in Trash writes Zeros over the data so that it is completely eradicated.
This will take quit a long time depending on how much data you have in Trash.
Unless there is data that needs to be rendered unrecoverable in the Trash, you could choose to just delete the files and folders with out the secure option.
Once you have Emptied the Trash unsecurely you can always use disk utility to Securely Erase Free Space on the Drive.

How do you delete [empty] a single file or folder from "Trash"?
Can you "securely delete" just 1 item?

A dangerous and incorrect shell command has been posted in this thread.
NEVER empty the Trash in the shell (Terminal.) NEVER put anything in the Trash unless you intend to delete it immediately. If you do put something in the Trash and change your mind about deleting it, move it out or use the Put Back contextual menu item. Then empty the remaining items in the Trash as usual.
