Desktop panel

What are the best and most popular desktop panels? I came across PyPanel in a screenshot on DeviantART but unfortunately development for it was discontinued a couple of years ago. I don't know if this will cause any sort of problem but I would feel much better if the software I was using is being actively developed.
Anyway, I would preferably like one that includes a system tray, clock and obviously a task/window list. Tint2 looked really good but I would like everything to be incorporated into one single bar without any additional software. I don't want anything heavy such as gnome-panel, it has to be "stand-alone" and not rely on too many dependancies.
So what are your recommendations for me?

PyPanel is still very popular, it's very tweakable and still does what most people need. You also can launch, say, the openbox menu with a left-click on an icon using xdotool, and google search for urukrama's dzen2 calendar script.
Tint2 is also commonly seen, it's in AUR. It doesn't incorporate a notification area (system tray), so people often use trayer or stalonetray with it.
xfce4-panel, lxpanel and gnome-panel are all i ever see.

  • Adobe Creative Cloud Desktop Panel Issues

    First, let me say that I've been an Adobe user for more than 18 years.
    A while back (about two weeks ago) I went as usual to launch the little Adobe Creative Cloud desktop panel that shows what's installed, updated, available apps and available updates. Instead of it launching as normally, I was told that I had to LOG IN.  I'm pretty sure I did just that with my Adobe user name and pwd, but suddenly found myself no longer within the little app management panel, but instead on a screen that told me I could drag and drop files into the cloud there. I did not want to drag and drop any files at all! What I wanted was to use my CC desktop apps management panel so I could INSTALL Dreamweaver CC using the CC desktop apps management panel.
    So I dismissed (exited out of) that "drag your files to here" screen. And now every time I launch the desktop panel, it asks me to log in, and every time I try, it comes back with "You've been signed out / Please sign in to continue."
    I have been around that loop of changing the password several times over now, with no change to the behavior of the CC desktop apps management panel.  I simply CANNOT log in there any more ... What's perplexing is that I never HAD to log in to it before, either!  I had been using it for MONTHS since I first installed Adobe CC, and it showed me my apps list and available updates and all that just fine for quite a while, but now it has its head stuck in a corner.
    Now when I launch it, I cannot get the panel to display my apps list as it should, but instead it keeps asking me to log in.  I have "changed the password" multiple times now.
    Thing is, I can log in with that same user id and pwd to my CC account online through the Adobe web site, but the little desktop apps management panel is no longer usable.
    Can/should I uninstall and reinstall the apps management panel?  Can I do that with the management panel ALONE and NOT cause problems with the CC programs that I DO have installed already (such as Illustrator CC, InDesign CC, and Photoshop CC?)
    And why does Adobe support keep closing my case at the same time that I'm pleading with them to HELP me resolve this problem?
    Should I simply uninstall the desktop apps management panel and forget about trying to use that and instead control all my CC apps directly from my account via the Adobe website instead?  CAN I do this?
    Two weeks now and still not resolved.

  • Load XFCE4 desktop + panels + applets all at once?

    This is purely an aesthetic issue. When I boot up to the XFCE4 desktop, there is a slight lag between when the desktop becomes available and when the panel loads. Basically, the panels keep populating themselves with applets for upto a second after the desktop becomes available, and this can clearly be observed, and is not nice to look at.
    This is my current desktop http://i.imgur.com/UJ2ALRO.png
    Is there a way to either make the entire panel load together, or to make the panel visible only after everything has been loaded? Or alternatively, to load the desktop only after everything is completely ready?

    This widget might be more to use for u in this case;

    It just sits and twirls other pages seem okay.

    Just out of interest, why the old KDE?
    You may get more info if you start firefox from the command line and reproduce the crash.

  • Xfce font change caused window/panel crash

    I just installed arch linux w/ xfce4 on my UX31A laptop for the first time yesterday.  I had everything up and going...but today I was changing my font in:
    Settings Manager > Appearance > Font
    and after testing out one of the various fonts, my desktop panel and windows disappeared (though I can still open google chrome).  I've tried reopening the settings manager from terminal using:
    xfce4-appearance-settings
    but receive the following error:
    xfce4-appearance-settings: cairo-scaled-font.c:459: _cairo_scaled_glyph_page_destroy: Assertion `!scaled_font->cache_frozen' failed.
    Aborted (core dumped)
    I'm sure I can fix this by finding the file in which the font setting is saved and changing it to another font, but I'm not sure where this is.  Any ideas?  Also, how can I prevent this in the future?  Thanks for the help!

    Did you hit Apply before you closed lxappearance? Otherwise the change is just a preview. Did you also run lxappearance as the same user that's having trouble with the panel?
    If that doesn't do it, try running xfce4-settings-editor. Don't get your hopes up though
    xfce4-settings-editor
    Go to the channel "xsettings" and edit /Gtk/FontName to something sensible, or reset it.
    Otherwise, this should be able to reset the Gtk font property(See here: http://docs.xfce.org/xfce/xfconf/xfconf-query).
    xfconf-query -c xsettings -p /Gtk/FontName
    If that can't run either, edit the files manually(I find it highly unlikely that these don't exist, please say so if they don't):
    ~/.config/xfce4/xfconf/xfce-perchannel-xml/xsettings.xml:
    <channel name="xsettings" version="1.0">
    <property name="Gtk" type="empty">
    <property name="FontName" type="string" value="FontName FontSize"/> <!--Insert something sensible here, like "Sans 10" -->
    </property>
    </channel>
    If that doesn't do it, I assumed the panel would follow the Gtk theme, but perhaps it doesn't. What about this?
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xf … t_settings
    Regarding the error, I have literally no experience with Xlib so I'm afraid I can't help you solve it that way.
    Edit: automatic url-tags don't like me.

  • Desktop won't stop changing!

    My brand new iMac is cycling through the standard mac background pictures on the desktop and i can't get it to stop! Its doing it about every five seconds, and if you go into the desktop panel in system settings, the cycle desktop option is not selected. If you pick another picture, it will display on the desktop for aboutfive seconds then continue to cycle again.
    Any thoughts?

    dap
    Try deleting the com.apple.desktop.plist file from the home / library / preferences folder. Log out and back in. This should return things to the default 'out of the box' settings.

  • Can't see an iCloud icon on my iPad panels

    I have an iPad and checking the Settings the iCloud setup is there but I can't find an iCloud icon on the control/desktop panels. So how do I access and interact with iCloud?

    Via the iCloud apps. Mail, Contacts, Calendars, Pages, Numbers and so on.
    You don't directly 'interact' with it. What would you want to do if you could?

  • Zappwm: New Desktop created for me

    (Update for 4.1 version)
    Hello, everybody,
    As I was tired of traditional desktops to Linux, I decided to customize my own using pieces of shell script, zenity, Fluxbox and Rox Desktop. I like it so much, I created my own Desktop: Zappwm (NOT a Window Manager).
    It has panels icons on the desktop and the best, full support drag'n drop: drag icons to the desktop, panel, or file manager. What is also included (ROX).
    You can download it freely at:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/zappwm/
    requirements:
    -Rox-filer
    -Zenity
    -PCmanFM (optional)
    -Fluxbox
    -xdg-utils
    No more overwrite the init of the Fluxbox, because zappwm now use own self init "~/.fluxbox/initzapp
    PS.: Occasionally, if you already use ROX, your settings may be subscribed by the package
    -Is Not a Window Manager (Like Fluxbox, OpenBox, Aewm, Kwin, Metacity, Sawfish, Blackbox, Ratpoison e tutti quanti!) - It is my own desktop I share packaged to the community!
    -It does not destroy your ROX preinstalled - It updates some files
    -It overwrites the init fluxbox - So if you use fluxbox, care. In general it's nothing serious.
    Thanks to everyone who helped me to correct the initial topic, to avoid misunderstandings. Definitely, honesty is everything!
    I think it's all pretty simple and you can download via sourceforge.

    I downloaded it, but there is less code here than there is in the average xinitrc.
    I don't want to give other than a warm welcome, but it seems very dishonest to me to call this your own window manager when it's just a ~five line script that moves around a couple of config files[1] and launches fluxbox and rox.
    [1] which users should also be warned about: this will overwrite any config files (for fluxbox, rox, or others) that you may have in your ~/.config, and it will do this every time it is launched.
    Trilby,
    I'm not dishonest. Not called "My Own WM" I said, "I Decided to customize my own using pieces of shell script, zenity, Fluxbox and Rox Desktop. I like it so much, I created my own Window Manager: Zappwm."
    It overwrites the. Init Fluxbox but no the rox.sourceforge.net (he uses the option cp -R -u /opt/rox.sourceforge.net $ HOME/.config & meaning "update" and not "overwrite") . So do not advise to those who are satisfied with Fluxbox and Rox. Just do not accept being called dishonest. I'm definitely not, as explained above.
    The code is a "lint". But everything works fine. I did not lie, it's all there in the packages. Who want an AUR, please help me! If not, install the source. Do not like it? Use the Uninstall script. Very Easy. Dishonest? Never! I update the topic above for avoid this confusion.

  • Why won't System Preferences save my desktop background folders?

    If I try to add folders to the sidebar in the System Preferences > Desktop panel, only the last-viewed folder will stay when you close and reopen the panel. Here's what it looks like: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1Qy01PS0aT0

    Back up all data.
    This procedure will unlock all your user files (not system files) and reset their ownership and access-control lists to the default. If you've set special values for those attributes on any of your files, they will be reverted. In that case, either stop here, or be prepared to recreate the settings if necessary. If none of this is meaningful to you, you don't need to worry about it.
    Step 1
    If you have more than one user account, and the one in question is not an administrator account, then temporarily promote it to administrator status in the Users & Groups preference pane. You can demote it back to standard status when this step has been completed.
    Launch the Terminal application in any of the following ways:
    ☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
    ☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
    ☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Terminal in the icon grid.
    Drag or copy — do not type — the following line into the Terminal window, then press return:
    sudo chflags -R nouchg,nouappnd ~ $TMPDIR.. ; sudo chown -R $UID:20 ~ $_ ; chmod -R -N ~ $_ 2> /dev/null
    Be sure to select the whole line by triple-clicking anywhere in it. You'll be prompted for your login password, which won't be displayed when you type it. You may get a one-time warning not to screw up. You don't need to post the warning. If you don’t have a login password, you’ll need to set one before you can run the command.
    The command will take a noticeable amount of time to run. Wait for a new line ending in a dollar sign (“$”) to appear, then quit Terminal.
    Step 2
    Boot into Recovery by holding down the key combination command-R at startup. Release the keys when you see a gray screen with a spinning dial.
    When the OS X Utilities screen appears, select Utilities ▹ Terminal from the menu bar. A text window opens.
    In the Terminal window, type this:
    resetpassword
    That's one word with no spaces. Then press return. A Reset Password window opens. You’re not going to reset a password.
    Select your boot volume ("Macintosh HD," unless you gave it a different name) if not already selected.
    Select your username from the menu labeled Select the user account if not already selected.
    Under Reset Home Directory Permissions and ACLs, click the Reset button.
    Select  ▹ Restart from the menu bar.

  • JInternalFrame drawing problem.

    Hi gurus
    Please could you help with a java problem that I cant find an answer to over the net:
    I have a JDesktop which contains multiple JInternalFrames. On one JInternalFrame i have attached a JPanel on which to draw on. I have multiple threads (simple ball shapes) that need to be drawn onto the JPanel and have left it up to the indivual threads to draw themselves (as opposed to using paintComponent in the JPanel class). The drawing on the JInternalFrame works perfectly fine.
    The problem arises when the other JInternalFrames are placed on top of each other - the balls are drawn over the top most JInternalFrame. What am i doing wrong? I have attached snippets of the code:

  • Problems installing Bridge and Media Encoder in CS6

    I recently installed Creative Suite CS6 Design & Web Premium. I had previously installed the CS5 version and had not un-installed it. Everything except Acrobat appeared to install correctly. When I opened Photoshop CS6 (64-bit) I noticed that it used the CS5 version Bridge. I went into Bridge and unchecked the open at start box, closed Bridge and Photoshop and re-opened Photoshop CS6 (64-bit). When I tried to lunch Bridge from Photoshop the following message appeared in the Desktop> panel : Waiting for Bridge CS6..." Bridge CS6 did not appear despite waiting for several minutes. I then pressed the Start button and went into the Programs listing. Under the Adobe CS6 group I found all of the applications (other than Acrobat) but Bridge CS6 (64-bit), Bridge CS6, and Media Encoder each had generic icons rather than the expected relevant Adobe icons. I tried to load each of the three by clicking on the icon. In each instance the following message appeared:
    The version of this file is not compatible with the version of Windows you are running. Check your computer's system information to see whether you need an x86 (32-bit) or x64 (64-bit) version of the program and then contact the software publisher.
    My system is a Gateway FX6802. I am running Windows 7 Home Premium version 6.1.7601, Service Pack 1, Build 7601. The system has 9 GB of memory. I ran CS5 on the system and did not experience any difficulty with Bridge.

    Thanks. Being the impatient sort (inspite of the problems that can create) I only did a partial uninstall with the cleaner tool, taking out the three items that were not working. Initially that seemed not to work. As I had other non-Adobe projects to take care of I put it out of mind. I even let an updatee package do its wonders. Today I used Photoshop for a quick project. I clicked on the Launch Bridge button and lo and behold the proper icon showed up and Bridge loaded. After finishing my project I closed down Photoshop and Bridge and then went through updating once more. The other problem I was having was with Acrobat. I finally traced the problem to a bad installation of Acrobat 9 at the CS4 level. (Shows you how much I use Acrobat.) I used the cleaner tool to clean up the remnants of CS4. After that Acrobat X installed quite nicely. At this point everything seems to be working as it should. Thanks for your help.

  • Access Privileges Button does not bring up pop-up Menu -- SOLUTION

    Hi. I was puzzling for a long time over why my Access Privileges Button did not work under System Preferences // Sharing on the Apple Remote Desktop Panel. I tried re-installing the Remote Desktop Bundle, removing System caches and so forth but nothing fixed it.
    The culprit was that somehow the following support file was missing: RemoteDesktop.bundle inside of the following directory: /System/Library/PreferencePanes/SharingPref.prefPane/Contents/Resources .
    I copied the file from another MacBook by selecting System/Library/PreferencePanes/SharingPref.prefPane in the Finder and then using the option menu to select Show Package Contents.
    I hope this will help anyone else who has run across this problems. Thanks.

    Thankyou VonHamhorse. I was met with the same problem.. EXACTLY. Your solution worked. My situation involved two Intel iMacs. Pre-sharing pane problems, I deleted the extra user from the iMac in question. (I was having to enter in an admin name and password everytime I upgraded the software. I found by deleting the second user that was installed by an ARD Admin package, I no longer had to enter in two sets of confirmations for each time I upgraded software.) However, after that deletion, I no longer could access the iMac via ARD Admin. I was working on that iMac tonight and decided to check out the "Sharing Control Panel" when I discovered I had no drop down menu. A quick search in discussions brought up your solution and in minutes, I had control again! Hopefully I'll be able to rectify my connection now.. Thanks again.

  • Use JWindow, JInternalFrame, JPanel, or JDialog

    Hello,
    My main window application extends a JFrame. When a component of the JFrame is mouse clicked,I want to open a popup window on top of this frame.
    The opened window is used to receive input from the user; with these properties: title bar, resizeable, can close with the "X" on the right side of the title bar, no minimizable or maximizable buttons on the title bar.
    1. I am very unsure whether I should use: a JWindow, JInternalFrame, JPanel, JDialog, JPopupMenu (probably not since I don't need a menu) to create the popup window. I think I should use JWindow, but am not sure.
    2. Also, I am unsure whether I can use JWindow and JInternalFrame with JFrame as the main app window.
    Thank you for your advice.

    If you want a popup window on top of this frame, you can either choose JFrame, JDialog or JWindow. They all have the own characteristics.
    JFrame: Usually application will use it as the base. Because It has a title bar with minimizable, maximizable and exit button.
    JDialog: Usually work as a option / peference / about dialog (Ex. Just click the IE about to see). Because it has a smaller title bar with only maximizable and exit button and the model setting. If model is to TRUE, that means all the other area of the window will be disable except the opened dialog own.
    JWindow: Usually use as a splash to display logo or welcome message.
    JInternalFrame: It display inside a desktop panel of JFrame. Just like the multi-documents function inside the MS Words.
