Desktop pics

I'm having trouble finding and changing desktop pics or wallpaper. The classic 9 seemed so much simpler. I can't delete photos that pop up in desktop folder or create different folders for pics. Help!

What are you trying to do?
If you want to edit the supplied Desktop images, they are in
/Library/Desktop Pictures
If you want to use your own folder of images, select ChooseFolder in the Desktop SystemPreferences pane.

  • Help! 2008 MacBook (non-unibody) will boot to custom desktop pic but no menu or dock, just the picture.

I have a 2008 MacBook (non-unibody). It will boot to the custom desktop pic, but the Apple menu and dock are not available. I cannot boot into safe mode. I can boot from the OS DVD and run disk repair, but that has not helped the issue. Any advice?

I would love to see your real full (sans ser no) System Profile
You don't mention what you are using. If not the ATI 5770 or above, get one.
Replace the graphic card likely even as troubleshooting
    reset SMC
Make a current clone or two
Boot off clone or setup a clean new emergency system for maintenance
    Safe Boot
    Recovery Mode
Start a new 2nd TimeMachine (I swap out and use one about once a month for insurance)
Never used it and not endoring spending or using but TechTool Pro 7 does more testing
The fewer background goodies the better but monitoring temps, fans, memory are useful.
    Temperature Monitor, SmcFanControl 2.4+
I dont' think you need to be using ClamXav
A system performs better with less
New computer? maybe a new disk drive. Maybe more or swap out some or all FBDIMMs. Maybe just a clean system. Worse case, you updated from SL to Lion/ML and didn't do a clean break.
Early 2008 3,1 that you have have been more tempermental for a goodly number of users.

  • Lost 'start' and other icons, all I have on screen is this page and a small desktop pic in the center.

I accidently hit some button and my screen icons all left. All that is on my screen is availability to this page and a small desktop
pic in the center. No other icons show. I can't open any program.

You probably have solved this by now, but one thought is Firefox's full screen view. The F11 key switches between full screen and normal views.

  • How to find current desktop pic

    Hello all,
I have had the same desktop pic on my MacBook pro for quite some time, and am in the process of backing everything up on my laptop so that I can install Snow Leopard.
I cannot find my current desktop wallpaper (image) on my drive. I have went to system preferences and desktop/screensaver and it doesn't appear to be in with any of the previous or standard desktop images. Is there a way to find this image?? I do not know the file name but I would really like to save this pic.
    Thanks,
    Norm

While there may be a way to capture the image you still can see on
the desktop, most of the methods I can think of won't save it as an
equally high resolution as an original; and perhaps not as large.
Depending on what source the image was brought into the computer
from, and if it was via a User account or put into a system file, an
image could be hard to locate; if the original is still in the computer.
And I have (out of curiosity) looked into my system stuff for an image
I've added to the Desktop as a background; while knowing a duplicate
or an original was available in another location, or a source folder.
I've noticed at different times, usually after performing some levels
of maintenance where certain caches and other items throughout
the System are affected, that a personally selected folder or image
file that had been accessed and available from the System Prefs
Desktop & Screensaver control panel, is no longer found. However
since I usually bring images into my computer by Date, from my
digital cameras, I can go back to locate them in at least one place.
And have not been successful in finding a System location for a
lead on where to look for the image, apparently so orphaned.
You could try to get a screen shot, for later sight comparison in
your other user folders. And also if you happen to make a clone
of your complete system for later access, since it may save the
image as a desktop background so long as it was present at a
point in time when the Clone was made.
I've made clones and found the same screen background to be
very distracting when booted into a familiar scene. So I change
them eventually (for reference that I've booted from a clone.)
Perhaps someone who has gone searching their folders & files
for the source of a Desktop image currently presented may be
of help in re-tracing steps to find where your latent image is in
hiding; since you can't find the source image you first loaded.
Sorry to be of little/no help.
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Desktop pic wont change, refuse to reinstall oSX.

For two weeks now I cannot change my desktop picutre. I have spent ages looking through other people having the same difficulties with no luck from any suggestions. I have tried
    verifying disk permissions
repairing disk permissions - both of these always find and seem to repair a lot of issues, bar some that 'wont be repaired'
I have tried copying a picture to my desktop and ctrl-clicking it and setting it as the background pic from there
I have tried deleting the /users/blah blah blah.plist file (which i cannot do because it doesnt exist on my laptop' I cannot even find the library folder in my home folder - maybe part of the problem.
I also tried to achieve the same thing with terminal - it just says it cannot be found.
Changing the desktop picture is a basic function and I refuse to go through the boring old faithful process of backing everything up and reinstalling os - there is too much work to do re-installing apps and convincing MS office that i should get another attempt at using my 3-tries only password to reinstall word and excel. Not to mention reconfiguring Pro Tools.
Does anyone actually have a simple answer to this seemingly simple problem? Or is it just an indicator that there is a more serious issue? I have been surfing the web and writing invoices, how has this caused me to somehow need a system restore?
P.S I cannot get another genius bar appointment - I do not have the time.

  • Problems with settings on desktop pics

I've been trying to set up my favorite pics to use as desktop slide show. No real problems except for one.
The desktop preferences keeps defaulting to 'stretch to fill screen'. Not a big deal, I'll just change it to 'fill screen'.
Seems the end result is the same on the desktop: strange looking pixelated photos from being stretched. So I go back to desktop and it has defaulted back to 'stretch to fill screen' and is no longer on 'fill screen'.
    1) - are they the same setting essentially? Seems the fill screen keeps changing back to 'stretch to fill screen.' I was hoping the fill screen might just be a magnification only and not a 'stretching.'
    2) - why is my computer defaulting back to 'stretch'? No matter how many times I put it on 'fill screen', it defaults back to the stretching mode.
I have noticed that I can put it on 'center' or 'tile' and it will retain that setting. I just don't prefer those settings.
Any ideas out there on why I can't seem to maintain the 'fill screen' option? Is there a 'preferences' for the preferences that maybe I need to trash to start over fresh?
    Thanks
in case it should matter, I'm running the latest updates on everything.

    PowerMac G4 1.42 duel   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi,
    Try deleting these files:
    com.apple.desktop.plist
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
They are located here: Home/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate those files and drag them to the Trash. Reboot. You will have to reset your preferences, but it's the best way to see if it is indeed a corrupted preference file causing this problem.
And you indicated you are running 10.4.6. That is not the most recent update. Go to the Apple logo top left in your Desktop then click: Software Updates. The most recent is 10.4.10.
    Hope this helps!

  • I wanted to change my desktop pic to the nature theme with the golden palace. Where is this in the Lion?

I don't understand why Apple removed this Nature folder from my desktop themes. How can I get it back?

What? You don't have a usable PPC OS installation? I'd be lost w/o one. No Eudora and no Office '04 apps. Since I've no iOS devices, Lion leaves a lot to be desired.
BTW, if you do any scripting stuff, Keychain Scripting.app and URL Access Scripting.app were also thrown out with PPC in Lion. Copy them into /System;Library/Scripting Additions/ and you can keep using them. Must be some inane security measure, like hiding the user's Library folder.

  • Desktop, Pic Files, and I Photo Pics Color Change

Two days ago, after start up all the color in my pics; folders, pic files, IPhoto all have lost their original color. I've tried Color Sync Utility, preferences Color calibrate, etc. and haven't had any success getting my original color back.
Any idea why this happened and how can I correct it.
    Thanks.

This forum is for the FCS app called Color. You might get more answers posting in one of the OSX forums.
However, you may want to make sure your graphics card isn't going bad or may need to be reseated.

  • Boots to desktop pic and dock but no top bar

I can get to my wallpaper pic, the dock, but nothing after that. I get the message that spotlight quit unexpectedly and it won't go beyond that. It was running sluggishly this morning with many spinnig colored balls. I did a software update, the 3 latest ones, and this boot up issue started. I did a pram reset with no change. Any ideas?

I ended up at the Genius bar this afternoon, after they verified the HD was okay, they did an archive and reinstall, no data was lost. My computer was still running sluggishly though, which it was before I tried the updates. I hate to admit this, but my HD was almost full. I only had 5 GB left, not enough space for the updates when I tried again at home. I believe it barely had enough room for the update when I tried it the first time and when it tried to boot up, it couldn't. I deleted over 10 GB, the updates installed and all is well. I meticulously delete data on our hard drives at work for our MR machine because of learning the hard way what happens when a drive is over 95% full, too bad I didn't bring that lesson home with me. Thanks for trying to help. Lesson learned.

  • Safari Bookmarks, Dock prefs, desktop pic, Finder prefs. ALL SELF-RESET!!!!

For some reason, I was using Safari and it quit. When this happened, all of the bookmarks, the finder settings, dock settings, everything was reset back to the original settings. It's just really annoying that the bookmark menu cleared itself back to its original setting.
    Now...
I've read everything i can find on this...
I don't have File Vault activated, never was...
My Home Folder is still named what it was...
I didn't throw out anything, download anything, move anything...
    Anyone have any ideas?
    Andrew

If you truly didn't rename your home folder or have File Vault enabled and fail or accidently removed your home /Library/Preferences folder, then you have just had a vivid lesson in a fact of computer life--Things Fail. It is time to start a comprehensive backup strategy. Do a search here in Discussions on "backup" and you will find lots of good advice. If you had a good backup you could just put back those bookmarks and prefs... As it is just be glad you didn't lose any data. Without a backup it is just a matter of time before you do lose data. Hard drives fail or become corrupt, systems crash and corrupt files, CPUs go south, RAM goes bad and causes crashes and data corruption. There are so many possible accidents and disasters, from lightning strikes to goofy roommates, that living a computer life without a good backup is like driving a car without a seatbelt--while it won't keep accidents from happening it may well save you if you have one.

  • Desktop pic (Wallpaper) Change pic every 5 secs but the odd transition?

    Hi, my first post
    I have two macs both running 10.3.9. A G4 and G5.
I am using customised wallpaper showing 2x jpegs that change every 5 seconds. looks fab on one machine (the G5) as the transition is graduated into white and back up again, but the other machine (the G4) using the same OS does NOT graduated. It just abruptly switches back and forth with no subtle gradation.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks

Graduating the transition is a function of Quartz Extreme, and requires that the computer supports it.

  • Desktop pic changes every time I restart the MAC since the new OIS update

    Anybody can help with?

ewaller, thank you for your response and interest! at this moment i'm so happy seeing the correct hour on the screen that all that i want is enyoi it!!!
I live in Barcelona so, teorically my UTC is UTC + 2. During all this time with UTC the time has been changing every time i started the computer but without following a pattern. So one day the time was 30 min. ahead the real time, another day 2 hours before and so on...  a bit crazy!
I have Windows installed on another partition, but I rarely started it.

verduler wrote:This is the output of hwclock --debug. It's a translation because my locale isn't english
FYI.  You can prepend LC_ALL=C to a command to force English output.  Example:
    LC_ALL=C hwclock --debug
Could have saved you some translating
If you are happy with the clock set to localtime, great.  I prefer having it set to UTC for a variety of reasons that have been discussed on these forums that I'll not repeat here.
    The hardware clock is UTC
Your system assumed the clock was set to UTC
Time read from Hardware Clock: 04.22.2012 10:38:11
    Hardware Time: 22/04/2012 10:38:11 = 1335091091 seconds after 1969
    Sun April 22 2012 12:38:11 CEST -0.381791 seconds
The system shows your time as being two hours ahead of UTC.  UTC does not have summer/winter time adjustments.  I assume that you are one hour ahead of UTC, plus an extra hour of adjustment for summer.
The post I took this from was posted at 01:01:56 PDT (UTC-7).  What time (your local time) did you make that post?
If it took you 20 minutes for the translation your hardware clock at the time would have been about 11:01.  That is  10 hours ahead of me.
I am confused, because I expected it to be about 9.  If things are working right, it should be 7.
Anyway, it would appear if the change you made fixed things then your hardware clock was not set to UTC.  If you want to pursue this, I am glad to help.  If not, I am sure we will be talking about clock settings this fall
