Desktop picture question...

Hi, I have G5 dual 2.7 and a G4 dual 1.25 and have ARD(latest version) and Leopard 10.5.1 installed on both. I use thew G5 as the master machine and and the G4 as the slave. When I access the G4 via the G5 and ARD the G4's desktop background is plain blue even though it is set as the default leopard "space" desktop. I have tried changing the desktop picture on the G4 but still it shows up as a plain blue background. Anyone?? This didnt happen in Tiger
Message was edited by: StinkyOldC

maybe its because my g4 isn't actually connected to a monitor that a desktop picture isn't shown...its basically a headless mac just used for storage and sometimes as a node in Logic but it is totally controlled by ARD. Under tiger it was ok so maybe its just a leopard thing

  • Question about Desktop picture.

I have recently noticed that if I choose a pic from my Library as my desktop background, my system starts running much slower. BUT, if I use a pic from the default images given to u in the first folders, OSX runs smoothly. Is this a known problem?? If so, is there anyway to avoid it? How?
    Any help appreciated, thank you.

Well, I don't know if this is exactly what you're talking about, but here goes...
I am aware that the more complex your desktop picture, the more RAM is devoted towards your desktop picture. You'll probably notice that the plain colors allow your system to run the fastest. This is because each time you open a new window or the content inside a window changes, RAM is devoted to redrawing your desktop picture around the window. The simpler your picture, the quicker this can be done. Assuming this picture you want as your desktop has people in it, people are very complex, where as some blue curves (the default os x pic) is not as much. Hope this helps...sorry you're kid or your wife or whoever you want as your desktop slows it down...I hate it too. I hope Apple develops some way for this to not take up as much processor power...it seems pretty silly to me.

  • Company-wide Desktop Picture on Mavericks Clients

We're looking at rolling out Mavericks on our systems at work, and I have set up a test machine to make sure everything will work as expected. We have a Lion server that is using Workgroup Manager MCX (instead of Profile Manager, which will change) to distribute policies to all the workstations. All of them are working well except for the desktop picture.
Now, I understand that the setting for desktop picture in Mavericks is no longer in a plist, but in an sqlite database. Is there any way to set the desktop picture using the Workgroup or Profile Managers for a Mavericks client? I don't want to replace the default picture on Mavericks systems because we update the desktop picture regularly.
EDIT: I should add, I tried to write a login script to do it, but I couldn't get it to run. The script has this single line:
tell application "System Events" to set picture of every desktop to "/Volumes/Groups/Everyone/Wallpapers/Current.png"

Your script is a kludgy hack that won't prevent users from changing the Desktop for the entirety of their session .
The correct way to do this is with Managed Preferences for OSX also called 'MCX' as you have already seen.
There is a tweak that should still work on 10.9 to import all the Apple based 'managed preference keys'.
Get Workgroup Manager for the same OS as the server (you may need the server admin tools, it varies, search for both). It may need to be the 10.9 version on Mavericks.
    http://support.apple.com/downloads/#workgroup%20manager
Open WGM on a client, connect to the server (do not work in the local node!). Select the group or computer group you are managing & select the 'Preferences > Details tab'. Click the + button to add the following…
    /System/Library/CoreServices/ManagedClient.app
This will give you the power to manage a lot of extra keys, find the 'Desktop picture' in the list, double click it, decide how often to manage it (once = first login, often = at each login, always = what it says ).
Select 'Often' & create a New Key, click the new item & select the key to manage (in this case Background). It should autofill the other values (e.g. image path & the path to the current Desktop. Sometimes Always won't create the key correctly, so create it inside often & drag it down.
Once all that is saved login as a member of the managed group & it should pull down the desired MCX prefs (reboot).
Your Macs will need to bound to the server for this to work & I haven't tested on 10.9 (WGM doesn't want to apply these to the local node, which may indicate it isn't possible.
I'd strongly suggest you copy the desired image to the Macs in question to increase reliability, or host it in an auto mount that appears in /Networks.
    Good luck

  • Desktop pictures won't use all pictures in folder

When I created a folder in iPhoto of the pictures I wanted on my desktop, not all the pictures are used, only 4 of the 8 I put there. I deleted the preferences, logged out and in again, but the same thing happens. Then I deleted the number of pictures, but two of them still don't show up.
Can anyone help solve this problem?
    Thanks in advance.
    Joanne

Found an answer to my own question. Some pictures I import won't be recognized by iPhoto, but if I do an edit, then iPhoto does acknowledge them. After I slightly cropped each picture, they all show up, both in desktop pictures and screen saver.

  • Desktop Picture

One question? I like changing my desktop pictures. Instead of the Aurora Safari Desktop Picture, I selected something from Webshots. I want to see this picture at startup instead of the Aurora. How do I change this? Please just one e-mail is sufficient.

Here are the instructions you requested:
_10.5 Leopard and 10.6 Snow Leopard_
    • Go to Your Hard Drive > System > Library > CoreServices. You’ll find DefaultDesktop.jpg; this is the startup image.
    • Drag it to your desktop (or other folder) to save it in case you ever want to put it back.
    • Find the image you want to replace it with and rename it DefaultDesktop.jpg (the new image must be a JPG).
    • Drag your new DefaultDesktop.jpg into the CoreServices folder.
    Regards,
    Roger

  • Apple Desktop pictures do not appear in System Prefs

I tried to change my desktop picture and discovered that there are none of the apple images showing in the system prefs for Desktop & Screen Saver. The folders are there (Apple images, nature, plants, etc) but the folders are empty.
Digging via the finder I found in Library/Desktop Pictures all of the missing files but Prefs does not apparently see them.
The default Aurora was there after 10.5.5 upgrade, then I replaced it with one of my own from the user/Pictures folder which shows in the prefs window. All of those pictures still show in prefs.
    What is wrong?

Conclusion, there is now something about my account that no longer can see the contents of the Desktop Pictures folder. Why is unknown still.
Usually, a bad preference file or incompatible login item is the culprit, although it could also be corrupted data in a user cache.
For the first, you can try moving likely suspects from ~/Library/Preferences to a desktop temp folder, then logging out & back in or restarting to see if the problem is gone. If not replace the old preference from the temp folder to its original location to restore the old preferences. One general way that may help locate suspect pref files is to change the preference in the normal way while ~/Library/Preferences is sorted by date changed -- the file storing the preferences should be very near the top of the list.
You can also run a terminal command that checks the syntax of most preference files. It won't indicate all problems but it is worth a shot. In Terminal type:
    sudo plutil -s ~/Library/preferences/*.plist
followed by pressing the return key. At the password prompt, enter you admin account password & press return again. It won't be echoed to the screen. If you get nothing besides the prompt for the next command, those prefs are syntactically correct. Otherwise, remove the indicated pref file as above & test.
If desired, repeat this for the main system-wide preference folder with this command:
    sudo plutil -s /Library/preferences/*.plist
Note: since your new account has no problems, it is highly unlikely a system preference is the problem.
For login items, check the list in the accounts system preference. Suspect anything that isn't from Apple. You can list them here in a new post if you have any questions about them.
If the problem is a bad user cache, a third party utility like Onyx or Leopard Cache Cleaner will allow you to "clean" (delete) them. Try this as a last resort, since caches speed up the operation of your Mac & will need to be rebuild by the system, causing one-time delays until this is done.

  • How to remove picture in Desktop Pictures Folder

I'm fairly new to my iMac...I've had it less than a year. Somehow (don't ask me how!) I've managed to get a couple of personal pics under the" Desktop Pictures" folder that is found when you right click on the desktop and select "Change Desktop Background". When it opens there are several folders under "Apple" one of which is "Desktop Pictures". The ones in question are pictures I'd previously used as my desktop background, but I do this all the time and none of the others have ended up stuck in this folder. I don't know how I did it, but I did and I can't seem to remove them. It's not a life or death situation and I can live with it, but to be frank they are pictures of an "ex" and I'd prefer to remove them if possible. Please advise. Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Wow! How easy was that! I feel like a moron. I work 8-10 hrs a day on a computer at work doing AutoCAD so I'm not exactly computer illiterate, but I was completely vexed at how to remove those. Thank you so much...I appreciate it very much!

  • When i open Firefox i can still see my desktop picture, all the text on that opening page is on top of this picture

the search bar is there but other than that, as iv said, all the text is on top of my desktop picture, i have had a message saying something like 'Firfox cound not down load updates due to another instance of Firefox running please close this down' but i have not opened another Firefox (this message has stopped now)
Also i have tried to ask this question recently but when Firefox sent me an email to click on the link to publish it, i got a message stating 'Something is wrong, we could not activate your account please make sure you have clicked on the correct link in your email' (i bet it will happen this time as well, hope not) its ironic i got to use IE to send this.

Well got this sorted, i managed to pick out the 'help' section on my desktop when i opened Firefox (not an easy task as you can see from my screen shoot) saw 'check for updates' mouse clicked all around this statement (as there were no buttons) and was advised to update to ver: 3.6.16 now everything is ok, still dont know what the problem was but hey its fixed, put a system restore point in just in case. thanks all.

    webweave,
    Welcome to the Apple discussions!
Generally, as discussed above, having 2 mount points for the same disk in the volumes folder won't prevent a successful backup. But in your case (#15!), that's a problem. More often than not, they are being created by Time Machine because you already have one or more instances of the Time Capsule disk mounted on your desktop. Ejecting the TC disk when it is not needed is the best way to avoid creating multiple mount points.
If you have any further questions, please post them in a new thread. You can refer back to this discussion with a link if necessary.
    Cheers!

  • Lost the ability to resize desktop pictures

I have just recently used onyx to do my general maintenance cleaning. After I restarted my computer I went into system pref. to change my desktop picture and found that I no longer have the option to choose Fill Screen, Stretch to Fill Screen, Center or change the background color. The box where these options normally used to be is now gone and there is only a blank space, as if it was never there. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
MacBook Pro 2.33 GHZ   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

HI Patric and Welcome to Apple Discussions.
If you hadn't posted this question I wouldn't have known my Sys Prefs/Desktop Pictures options have also disappeared. All it shows is the name of the photo and the size. Patric, you indicated that you are running 10.4.9 but did you by chance update to the 10.4.10 yet? That could be the glitch.
In the meantime I hope someone else has some suggestions....

  • Desktop Pictures missing in preferences but not in Library...

When I go to change my desktop picture in system preferences and I click on a folder (like "nature" or "abstract"), the pics in that category do not appear and the preview screen stays blank. I checked and the files are still under Library->Desktop Pictures and I can select them from there if a add a new folder to the system preferences desktop pics list. The problem is that this should not be happening... anyone have a fix?

Not a fix but something I found out the hard way.. When I use quartz images that do not have the same size as my desktop and I scale them to fit my desktop size my graphics in general give trouble. Screen savers that will not run in test mode. Screen savers running black in the background, Photo Booth issues. Depth of the screen is reduced. If you use custom desktop pictures don't resize them to fit your screen, center them or just have them full screen. They somehow don't scale well.

  • Only Desktop Picture on TV

I connect my macbook pro to my tv using the mini dvi connector and vga/svga cable, and all i see on my tv is the desktop picture. How can I watch a movie or actually see everything else from my macbook on my tv?

When you plug in any monitor, by default it acts like a second computer monitor...an extension of your desktop. If it's blank, you probably haven't put anything there yet. I'm sure if you dragged something over to the second monitor, like the DVD Player window, it would not be blank anymore.
If you want the same thing to show on both your MacBook Pro and your TV, you must turn on "mirroring" mode. Do this either in the Displays icon on your menu bar, or using the "Mirror Displays" checkbox in your Displays system preference, Arrangement tab. The Arrangement tab also lets you arrange the monitor icons to match how they are in your room so that dragging a window past the correct edge crosses over to the other monitor (when mirroring is off).

  • 10.9.3 on iMac 27", dock displays near middle of screen, desktop picture isn't covering whole desktop. Anyone else having this annoying glitch?

    Hello Everyone.
I upgraded an iMac 27" (3.4 Ghz, Intel Core i7, 3TB fusion) from Mac OS X 10.8.6., to Mac OS X 10.9.3 a few days back.
Ever since then, the 2nd user to login on a given day, gets the dock displayed near the middle of the screen. It still interacts OK (e.g. you can launch applications from there), but it is not in it's correct location. The desktop picture (in this case, a shade of solid dark grey), only covers the smaller desktop area (up to where the Dock is). The remaining area of the screen automatically gets a 'light grey' background colour.
So person A logs in, no problem. But when person B comes along (with perosn A still logged in), the user logins, and they get this 'chopped of' version of the screen, with the dock mid-screen. (See screenshot attached).
The users can still click on any dock icons, and the applications will open up. But the dock won't return to it's original home, and refuses to 'jump' back to their proper home (at the bottom of the screen).
I've tried using CSCREEN to change the resolution at startup, via a terminal command and Automator, but that only works on some occasions. Others (like the attached screenshot) boot with the two-colour background, and 'confused' dock. A manual screen resolution change in the Settings area (down and then back up again), resolves the issue for that boot.
I've tried stripping back all non-essential plug-ins, tried removing a variety of start-up items, add-ons etc. I've tried creating a 'test' account, and the same issues appear to this account too.
Is it just me, or are others having problems with a misbehaving dock / screen resolution, in Mac OS X 10.9.3 / on an iMac 27"?
    Thank you!
    D.

    Hi folks.
I found a solution...Looks like the Dock is the culprit it's self. So, I made an automator app that I fire up automatically at login time. The automator app runs a shell script command:
       killall Dock
(make sure you have a capital D on Dock)
The Dock gets closed off, and it then re-opens in the correct spot (bottom of the screen -- not the middle of the screen). Hope this helps someone else!
    Enjoy.

  • How do i get the same desktop picture on my external monitor, as on my macbook pro, and get it to stay that way when unplugged?

Everytime I use an external monitor with my macbook pro the desktop picture always changes to the same one as on my external hard drive...how do i get the external monitor to show the same picture as my macbook pro and keep it that way?

Did you download the PC version? There is no DOS in OSX.
Look for the Mac version of AutoCAD.
