Desktop Pictures Cant 'Change and Repair Permission Stuck

Are these two problems interrelated...
I first posted this yesterday - but no responses, so I try again.
I can not see the Apple choices for desktop pictures (Nature, Solid Colors, etc)
I have read that I should delete the systems playlist and or the apple.com.desktop playlist... believe me I would if I could, but neither shows up in my preferences playlist. Since i don't see either of these playlists, I assume thta is why neither of these choices is available in the picture selection control panel.
I have repaired permissions and still nothing.
I do see my Aperture and iPhoto pictures and it is currently stuck on a picture I have chosen awhile back from my desktop.
Any help is really appreciated.
How do I rebuild the playlist which are required for these choices?
Now today I tried again to repair permissions and I get this strange response...
Warning: SUID file "System/Library/CoreServices/Finder.app/Contents/Resources/OwnerGroupTool has been modified and will not be repaired.
Group differs on "private/etc/cups",should be 0, group is 26.
Permissions doffer on "private/var/spool/cups/cache/rss", should be drwxr-xr-x, they are drwxrwrx-x.
So how do I fix this and is this causing the problems with my desktop pictures?
Sorry long post, but need help from some experts.

Barry,
Okay I made a slight mistake spelling out the PLIST as a playlist.
The ongoing problem as stated is I can not see nor change my desktop background pics. I have read that some folks have corrected this by deleting the dektop.plst, reboot and all is back to normal or rebuilding/repairing permissions. However I don't have a file, as I mentioned, for the desktop.plist to delete.
Repairing permissions I would think would rebuild this file, however I get the described SUID file warning which doesn't get repaired.
Hope that helps explain it a bit more.

my 18 month old has got to my keyboard, and my desktop ahs gone blue and my picture gone, and the menu bar across the top keeps disapperaing, I have tried changing the picture but it makes no difference, help please?

If none of that helps try this...
Safe Boot , (holding Shift key down at bootup), use Disk Utility from there to Repair Permissions, test if things work OK in Safe Mode.
Then move these files to the Desktop...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.systempreferences.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.recentitems.plist
    Reboot & test.
PS. Safe boot may stay on the gray radian for a long time, let it go, it's trying to repair the Hard Drive.

  • Desktop picture suddenly changed by itself

I woke up the morning turned on my mac and booted it to find that the desktop picture was the blue galaxy.
When I shut it down last night it was set to the purple nebula as far as I can recall. I havent enabled "change desktop picture every 30 minutes" so I'm very puzzled as to why it has randomly changed itself. The only I did yesterday was install a couple of Apps from the App store. A photo duplicate finder - and an application uninstaller...
I'm almost wondering if I have downloaded a trojan or back door open - ridiculous I know as my security is pretty paranoid and none of my safeguards has reported anything, nor do I get software from non official sources, but I'm at a loss to figure how this has suddenly changed iteslf... I mean computers don't do that... do they?
Anyone who can explain what has happened I will be very grateful.

There's a bug that changes the wallpaper to the default one after each startup. To test this, open System Preferences > Desktop & Screen Saver, and see if you can open it.
Try deleting the Desktop settings file. Open a Finder window, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type ~/Library/Preferences. Then, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and "com.apple.systempreferences.plist", and restart. Finally, change your background

  • Why is my desktop picture always changing to one i view online?

my desktop picure changes everyday to a picture i view online suddenly and i have no idea why

Simply reset your desktop picture. It's not unusual for the plist that saves info gets corrupted and resets to the default setting.

  • My desktop picture keeps changing after each log-out or shut down.  How do I fix this?

I have a new MacPro, and I would like to stop my desktop photo from changing every time I shut down, or lock my computer.  It's truly annoying.

Close all windows and quit all applications.
Hold the option key down and click the "Go" menu in the Finder menubar.
Select "Library" from the dropdown, then "Preferences" folder.
    Look for these three files.
    com.apple.screensaver.plist
    com.apple.desktop.plist
    com.apple.systempreferences.plist
Right click each  one of those and select " Move To Trash" from the contextual menu.
    Restart the computer.

  • HT204053 I rfor ntly changed my email address and apple id- when accessing app store from my iphone the old id (email address) still apears on the log in screen - cant change and access app store

I recently changed my email address and also my apple id to match- this is all working OK and I can access store ,apple account etc - however when I get notifications on my i phone to update apps via app store the log in screen still show my old apple id -email address which is no longer valid. when I enter my password I am denied access - there is no comand on my i phone to change the log in id for the app store ( there is for changing password or forgotten password only) does anyone have the solution for me please - many thanks, fijijohn

when I get notifications on my i phone to update apps via app store the log in screen still show my old apple id
That's because apps are forever tied permanently to the Apple ID that bought them, even if they were free. That is the only ID that can ever update them.
Unfortunately you went about this the wrong way. Rather than making a new Apple ID with the new email address, you should have just changed the name and email address associated with the old ID. Now you are kind of screwed because it's too late to use the new email on the old ID since you used it to create a new Apple ID. Apple does not transfer content from one ID to another and Apple doesn't merge IDs.
You can try to resurrect the old Apple ID with a new email address and maintain two Apple IDs, or decide which ID and it's content you wish to abandon.

  • Desktop Picture Changes to Solid Blue Automatically

I have never seen this problem. I have had one of Apple's standard black and white pictures as my desktop for years. All of a sudden (don't recall any changes to system) my desktop is solid "Apple" blue. If I change it to anything else it reverts back to the solid blue within a few minutes. I tried opening the console and viewing all messages to see if I could get a clue to what system call might be change it but I saw no messages occur as I observed the desktop picture being changed.
Can anyone tell me how I might track down what is changing my desktop picture?

Thanks, I should have thought of that.
I tried it and it didn't work. My desktop picture changed almost immediately after logging in. but it did lead to the solution. I noticed that the desktop picture changed at the same time as Entourage Alert's launched (this was turned on the same day that the problem started. So I turned off Entourage Alerts and logged in and out. The desktop picture has remained as selected.
I'm not interested in running Entourage so I don't care about the bug.

  • Desktop Picture Changing Time

Do any of you know if there's a way to set the desktop picture to change slower than 30 seconds but faster than 5 minutes?
Is there a script or terminal command out there that will work?

    Hi there,
    Appears you can edit the...
    /Users/YourUserName/Library/Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
You'll need either Property List Editor, (part of Developer Tools installed), or PlistEdit Pro...
    http://www.fatcatsoftware.com/plisteditpro/
1 minute equals 60.00000 in Default>Change time, so change it in Seconds.

  • Desktop picture on display

I have my Macbook Pro configured to change the desktop picture on login, and that works fine. However, I have it hooked up with the 24" cinema display, which will not ever change the image. It chooses one I select, but never changes it when I power down and up again.
Is there a way to get the display to take the same picture as the laptop, which changes each time I login?
    Thanks
    Shelley

When you have multiple monitors each uses a different configuration. What you want to do is plug in your display then open Desktop and Screen Saver Preference pane in system preferences, make sure you are on the panel for the external display and then check the "Change picture:" and set for on logon. That should do it.

  • IPhoto 5 delete my desktop picture

I've just installed iPhoto 5 and every time I run a presentation my desktop picture goes away and the default blue one replaces it. If I relaunch the system my picture is there again.
Is there any solution to this?
iMac 600 Mhz Mac OS X (10.3.9) 256 MB RAM

I've had a similar problem, and I think it is a bug in the system. But I get my desktop picture back after I disconnect from the projector. My experience has been that the settings for "desktop picture" are affected when the display changes. So connecting to a projector changes the display setting and thus changes the desktop picture.
If I set the desktop picture when I'm connected, that picture comes back next time I connect to an external display. When I disconnect, my original desktop is back again.

  • Dual Desktop Pictures

Hi, I have dual LCDs and i want to use dual screen desktop pictures. They are split files and i have them in two different folders. I have each screen set to use the appropraite folder. Now for my problem... When i click the "change picture" it uses a random choice of picture. In other words both screens don't start showing the first picture in the selection window. Is there a way that i can set system preferences to display a set order of the pictures. By doing it this way both of my screens will show the appropriate half of the dual display picture. I hope I didn't confuse anyone with my discription. Thanks

Ok here's my understanding of what you want to do, correct me if I'm wrong. You have 2 monitors, and two pictures. One of the pictures will correspond to each appropriate monitor. In other words its one large/wide picture but you have it split up in half one for each monitor. Now, you want one to remain on one monitor and the other on its repected monitor.
When you go to your System Preferences and you go to the Desktop and Screen Saver pane, you should get a panel in each monitor. Each with a list of folders on the left and on the right the thumbnails for the pictures. Don't check Change Picture. I think thats your first problem. Next, just navigate to the folders with your picture in it from your Finder and drag the picture into the the "Well" on each monitors desktop Picture panel. And that should do it.

  • My desktop picture is stuck in the stretch mode and I can't seem to change it. How do I change it?

my desktop picture is stuck in stretch mode and I can't seem to change it.  Help!!

Hewlett Packard already knew about this problem and they have also published a fix to solve the problem of wallpaper stucking on stretch mode. Download the hot fix from the ftp site here: ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp45501-46000/sp45575.exe. This package changes the Wallpaper Picture Position function from Stretched to Fill, Fit, Tile, or Center.

  • G4 450 and protools, somehow ran out of memory to startup. Error code 10. Tried turning off extensions to boot but now just locks up as I tried a HD verify/repair and then moved the folder to the desktop screen. cant get it off now.froze.

Ok, I have a Mac g4,  os9. ..450 Processor. I Think I upgraded ram, can't remember. Maybe a 512 card. Added an 80 gig internal HD for music storage.  Computer was solely used for protools LE 5.  I knew I was kinda close on my memory for running the program after recording things with plug ins etc.  It was beginning to get slow at startup.  Anyway it's been a couple years since I used it.  I got it set up yesterday and it wouldn't launch and kept giving me error code 10. So I replaced the battery and tried again.  the small finder icon in middle of screen would then pop up and alternate with a "?". Then it would change to a pict of a hard drive disk and then a me alternating "?".  It would still give me the error code if I clicked on anything. So I then held down the shift key to turn off extensions as it had mentionEd to do a couple times. Still would give me the error code on my home page.  If I tried to get into my hd which is on desktop it would give me the message, but somehow it did open one occasion and I went into it and scrolled to disk verify and repair. Did it. Said things were fine. I then saved the results in a file which was then offered along with location. I chose desktop. Probably really bad idea in hind sight.. It did it, but now no matter if I turn extensions off,  the home screen pops up but then goes blank.  The hard drive icon along with the new folder, and my protools icon immediately dissapear. And it freezes.  at one point a message did pop up saying finder could not start up because there is not enough memory available.  I'm not a computer guy.  Ive tried finding the guy who helped me set this thing up 10 years ago but to no avail. If I can be guided to somehow uncover some of the unneeded memory usage I would then learn how to more efficiently use it.  How the heck do I even start. I can't get to a screen which shows what's eating my computers space to even start getting rid of unneeded stuff. Please help if you can.  I have so much to loose if I can't get it to work.  Btw...I no longer have the os9 disk. I think it was tossed 10 years ago or more.  May not even have my original pro tools disks anymore.  Uggh.

Ouch, tough spot, but offhand I'd say some memory may have gone bad, or maybe just needs re-seating after all this time.
Not much you can do, but try this anyway...
