Desktop rearranges at start-up

Why does my external HD and mac HD icons move around whenever I restart my computer?

Hello! Usually they move around because of stuff on the desktop. Try keeping all the junk (except the hard disk) on the desktop in once folder. Tom

  • On Windows Server 2012 R2 the "Show my desktop background on Start" is grayed out

    Hi
As shown below, the new 8.1/2012R2 function "Show my desktop background on Start" is not available on Windows Server 2012 R2.
    I have tried multiple solutions:
    - Activate OS (In Win 8.1 - the feature is unavailable when Win8.1 is not activated)
    - Install Desktop Experience
    - Playing with the registry key "Subkey: HKCU\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Explorer\Accent Entry:
    MotionAccentId_v1.00
But no luck. Does anyone have a solution.
The reason why I need this is, that I am building a Remote Desktop solution, and here we want to give users the same experience as from their desktops.
Looking forward to some exciting feedback.
    Regards,
    Mr. Thomas

  • On Windows Server 2012 R2 the option "Show my desktop background on Start" is disabled

    Since this thread is
inactive, I am starting a new one.
On windows server 2012 R2, under the taskbar properties, the option to display desktop background on start is disabled and I have not found a way to enable the same.
Please suggest, how this can be enabled.
    With regards

You should take a look at this thread. They still haven't figured it out yet though, I don't believe it is possible at the moment on server 2012 even with desktop experience installed.

When exporting a video slideshow to my desktop it will start and then just end with no progress so I have to close it out.  I get no warnings or any explanations. Any ideas?  I am running Windows 7.  No problem viewing it in LR.  Thanks

Found out LR wasn't stopping but slowed way down. For 19 pictures, no video and no sound it took over 6 Hrs to export.  Does anyone have any ideas to help this?  Thank You.

  • How to pin a tile for both modern UI IE and standard desktop IE to start menu in Windows 8.1?

    Hi,
When we deploy new applications to users we use the new GPO for Win 8.1 called "Pin Apps to Start". There we specify the path to the application and it automatically pins to users start menu on log on.
But we want to have both the modern UI IE and the standard desktop IE on start menu also, the modern UI IE is already on the start menu by default, but when we add the IE shortcut to the GPO setting it doesn't appear on users start menu. tried the following
    path: c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe
anyone know how to do this in Windows 8.1?
In Windows 8 it works, but since Microsoft blocked this feature to keep the start menu "clean", we need to use the Pin Apps to Start setting in a GPO.
    Kind regards, Magnus Lislevatn

    Hi,
I want to know the detail GPO settings for the Internet Explorer, both Windows store and the desktop Internet Explorer, besides, does it work for Windows 7 system?
The Windows store Internet Explorer is an app, it is not located in C:\Program Files, the desktop Internet Explorer is located at C:\Program Files\Internet Explorer.
that’s why it doesn't appear on users start menu  when you add the IE shortcut to the GPO setting and tried the following path: c:\program files\internet explorer\iexplore.exe
The suggestion I provided for now is to check whether it just happened to one Windows 8.1 machine, if this happens to any other system, the group policy is responsible for this, posting the group policy setting will help analyze this.

  • My desktop won't start

I have a treo 680 unlocked and installed missing synch software on my new macbook pro leopard.  I started using the sync function and was getting used to the weird looking (compared to desktop on windows) desktop presentation when I noticed that I wass getting all kinds of duplication and even triplication on my syncs.  I ttied to solve that problem with help from missing sync but to no avail. I decide to try and start over.
So I uninstalled missing sync andI went back to my PC and cleaned up my handheld with my PC desktop.  I couldn't uninstall desktop for mac so I reinstalled missing sync and did a hot sync.  I then noticed I would have the same problem as i got a notice from missing sync that I had more than 5% sync to do.  I wondered how that could be because this was supposed to be a new sync with no info on my desk top. I stopped the hot sync function and tried to see what was going on by opening my desktop.  I tried it several times. I tried downloading mac desktop again and re-installing it.  That didn't work, I kept getting the message that I had the most recent version on my mac and that I couldn't re-install.
So that brings me to my original subject statement.
My desktop won't start so that I can clean everything ou and do a start over sync.  Please someone help!!!

Has this ever been resolved?  It looks like it's 5 months old and I don't see any replies.  I saw this and immediately thought of the DEP(Data Execution Protection) feature that is a characteristic of Windows Vista.  If you go to your control panel,to system, to advanced system settings, and then click the settings button in the performance section, the DEP is the third thumnail to the right(should be the last one there).  This is where you can turn it on or off and add programs for it to ignore.
However, usually when it's the DEP that kills a program unexpectedly, the operating system has usually made it known to the user that it was the DEP.

Yosemite automatically adds a new desktop everytime i start my mac; pls help
i have upgraded my mac pro to Yosemite few days earlier and i find an annoying problem whenever i start my mac it automatically adds a new desktop...and when i open my mission control it shows me number of desktops which i haven't added myself; one more thing i am using 2 displays for my system; pls help

If I open up the AirPort App - it only says that it cannot find my AirPort wireless device (probably because I dont have one) and then if I go to networks to connect to my wifi I select my home network and it ask me to input a password (as it should) but when I try to put in my password for my network it says "connection timeout" and the screen behind it (where the options for wifi or ethernet ext are) it says no ip address under wifi (also the status indicator is showing yellow - since my wifi is on just not connected to a network. I cannot seem to find any place to input my information for my specific router. Although I can connect to neighboring wifi routers just fine.

  • Recently moved to switzerland from canada. Can i just plug in my desktop and get started?? I've had my laptop here before so know that it is that easy just unsure about my desktop??

Just moved from Canada to Switzerland. Can I just plug in my Desktop and get started?? I've travelled with my laptop before so know that it is that easy!! Just not 100% sure about my desktop!!

You can, but the power outlet type may differ.  All Intel Macs have no trouble understanding current from 110 to 250V

  • Exported a 3 minute video from iMovie to Quicktime, saved on my desktop.  It started saving as INDIVIDUAL files, as in about 5400! Entire system froze, completely unresponsive.  Powered off 3 times now, it comes on and displays my screen saver but nothing

Exported a 3 minute video from iMovie into Quicktime, saved to desktop.  System started saving INDIVIDUAL frames instead and entire system froze.  Powered off and on twice - screensaver appears, but that's it - nothing else is accessible

Boot in safe mode and log in to the account with the problem. Note: If FileVault is enabled, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a Fusion Drive or a software RAID, you can’t boot in safe mode.
Safe mode is much slower to boot and run than normal. The next normal boot may also be somewhat slow.
The login screen appears even if you usually log in automatically. You must know your login password in order to log in. If you’ve forgotten the password, you will need to reset it before you begin.
You may now be able to log in and move the files off the Desktop. Then reboot as usual.

  • When I only want to close the current window to return to the previous window, the whole firefox site closes down, I end up back at my desktop & have to start all over again. How can this be fixed?

If I close a window I should be back at the previous window that I was at when I followed a link to this window. At least that's the way Internet Explorer works, which I have used for years. The only thing that prevents me from using Firefox exclusively is that it is very time consuming to have to start all over again from scratch every time I close a window. For instance, say I type "cats" into the search box. It gives me links to a list of "cats" sites. I go to a "cats" website, decide I don't like it so close the window to return to my list of sites, but instead of returning me to the list, I end up at my desktop. Then I have to start all over, just like I had not even been online. Very aggravating. I don't know how else to describe the problem, I can't believe that other people haven't had a similar complaint, unless I just have some settings wrong?

Now up to Firefox 8 and the problem persists. Cannot go to the www.turnitin.com page and login as I used to do -- Firefox does not remember my username or password.
Still works on Windows, and with other browsers... It would be great if a fix is available.

  • When I click on the Moilla button on my desktop, the firefox start page that shows up has no Mozilla button to access print, history. options etc., it just says mozilla firefox start page at the top. rt page tc.

When I click on the Mozilla icon on my desktop, a mozilla firefox startpage come up that has NO mozilla button to click and access print, history, options etc. Also the whole page automatically shifts down slightly to show only google question box and no address bar. Also, there used to be a place where I could click on most accessed pages, but that disappeared a couple of weeks ago. I have an HP computer and never know what the start page will look like.

    Hey plainmad,
Did you recently upgrade Firefox? I would be willing to be that everything is still there, it's just hidden. Take a look [https://support.mozilla.com/en-US/kb/common-questions-after-upgrading-firefox-36 this article]. It will give you some tips on how to bring back any of the options you might not see.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Font doc that loads on desktop when I start up

I recently installed CS4 (upgrade from CS2). Ever since when I start up my G4 a file loads to my desktop and I do not know what it is. The file is named helvR08-ISO8859-2.pcf. It is an adobe file. when I click on it textedit opens, this is what reads:
    fcp

On my machine, I have the following 2 files:
    /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/75dpi/helvB08-ISO8859-2.pcf.gz
    /usr/X11/lib/X11/fonts/100dpi/helvB08-ISO8859-2.pcf.gz
What is likely happening is that somehow one of those files got registered to be one of your login items, and when you login, the file is being "opened" as if you double-clicked on it in the Finder. Because /usr/ and its subdirectories are owned by root and have read-only permissions, the built-in zip program of OS X can't expand the file to to the same folder as the original, so it instead expands it to your Desktop. (I believe that's the default behavior in Tiger and prior; in Leopard, the file is extracted in ~/Downloads/).
Running "/usr/bin/file" on the extracted ".pcf" file give the following information:
    >/Users/mdouma46/Downloads/helvB08-ISO8859-2.pcf: X11 Portable Compiled Font data
The first 4 bytes of the file (aka the "cookie" or the file's "magic number") in Hex is 0x01666370, which if interpreted as ASCII text would be "fcp".
The "fcp" isn't for Final Cut Pro, but is actually PCF backwards (in other words, a 32 bit integer byte-swapped from Big-Endian to Little-Endian or vice versa).
Go to System Preferences, open the Accounts preference pane, click on the Login Items tab, and see if either of the files above are listed as login items. If they are, just remove them (not the file itself, just the setting to be a login item). If they aren't, then there is likely some other process on login that is indirectly opening that g'zipped file.
Since these files are a standard part of OS X's X11 installation, that this behavior appeared after installing Photoshop is most likely a mere coincidence.
    Hope this helps...
