Desktop rebuild

I am having an odd problem with my desktop. After an accident when dragging a a number of jpeg files on to an icon building application and missing the app icon they started to move to the desktop I tried to stop it by clicking on stop in the transfer progress window, it did not work. I now can not access the items I had on my desktop or even see their icons unless I randomly click around and hit one. I have rebuilt the permissions etc and verified the drives still the problem continues even after restarts and complete shut downs. In the old days I would toss out the finder preferences and or rebuild the finder is their a way to do that now?

Try opening a Finder window, choose the Desktop, and select something other than icon view (list or column for example). Perhaps you can manipulate your "missing" icons this way.
Are all of your Desktop icons missing or is it just the JPEGs that you accidentally put there?

Steve M.

  • Desktop rebuild after AppleWorks 6 Install

    I have a refurbished iBook G3 / 900MHz with OS 9.2.2 & 10.2.4 (dual boot configuration). Awhile back I installed AppleWorks 6.2.3 (while booted to OS 9).
When the computer restarted after the install, it immediately began rebuilding the desktop. I've never had that happen before after installing a program. Is this normal with AppleWorks 6? The real problem was that it took an hour to complete!
Normally I rebuild the desktop with extensions off, and it takes about 5 minutes (on this machine). Any ideas why the desktop rebuild was triggered after the install, and why it took so long to complete?
    Thanks.

If the Finder thinks that there is a problem with the desktop database or if the files have been moved, it will rebuild the desktop the next time it starts up. This can also happen if the File Exchange control panel was disabled the last time the desktop was rebuilt, as this control panel's functionality affects the database.
If you have Mac OS X installed on the system and you rebuild the desktop from Mac OS 9, the process will take a long time because it is checking all of the files Mac OS X uses. This can be avoided by using the Classic pane of System Preferences to rebuild the desktop.

  • Long desktop rebuild

I recently purchased a refurbished iBook G3. It came loaded with OS 9.2 and 10.2., as well as the OS CD's for both systems. I also received a CD containing AppleWorks 6, which I decided to install. Before the installation was complete, a message appeared that the desktop was being rebuilt. This took an hour to complete!
I was told by the company I bought the iBook from, that possibly a desktop file was corrupted, causing the long rebuild. They suggested reinstalling 9.2, from the CD which they supplied, and this would get rid of the corrupted desktop file(s). After that, a desktop rebuild took about 5 minutes. So far, so good.
Then, the other day I downloaded TechToolLite, and wanting to be sure everything was up to par, I used TechTool to rebuild the desktop again, the idea being that a TechTool rebuild is more thorough, because it actually deletes the desktop files and rebuilds them from scratch.
I'm 45 minutes into the rebuild and the "rebuilding desktop" progress bar is only about a quarter of the way complete. This has made me nervous.
Does anyone know why the rebuild should take so long, based on the above info?
Thanks for any thoughts on this.

I'm chiming in here too, I use Disk Warrior although I have tt pro too I still prefer DW... another little tool I use in between Disk warrior use is called Trashdesktop.
It is free and is really great for desktop rebuilding. You instal the program, reboot to ensure it is working then when the desktop is reached you simply drag/drop the closed hard drive icon(s), if more than one or partitioned then restart once more.
It doesn't look like it did anything but what it did do was deposit the invisible database file into the trashcan. When you reboot it recreates brand new ones from the things you have installed on your computer and touches nothing else.
Then you can use DW for an even more thorough cleaning once a month. I use Trash*Desktop once a week because I edit docs constantly for a website i administrate at and my own plus artwork, you may not need to use it as often depending on how many times you adjust docs and such.

  • Software and Desktop Rebuild

My desktop crashed and had to be rebuilt.  I have no disks to to set up my Pearl 8100.  What downloads should I use to set up my Pearl again.  There were so many listed I have no idea where to start.  Should I also be updating my phone as well?  I have never done so in the 3 years I have had it.  Your expertise would be much appreciated.  I lost all of my address book backups as well.

  • Word (Office 2001) gives Type 2 error at start-up - help needed

Good day - I'm puzzled by a problem I'm unable to resolve. First, Word (part of the Office 2001 suite) suddenly lost it's pull-down menus, including the About tab, and then, upon relaunch, gave me a Type 2 error and refused to start. It first shows the Start-up 'Gallery' scene, and when you try to open an existing document or a new Word document, it then briefly shows the Word template and then crashes with a Type 2 error (I've run this program for years without any major issues). When I couldn't get this resolved after re-starting with a desktop rebuild, I checked the other applications - Entourage, PowerPoint, and Excel, and they all work fine. I trashed the Microsoft prefs - still no change. I removed the fonts - no change. I reloaded the MS Word portion of the Suite - no change. I zapped the PRAM, tested all the system extensions, even replaced the Internet Prefs - no joy. I even went so far as to do a Clean Install of new System software from my software install disk. Other than this, I haven't loaded any new software or done anything that I can think would cause this, and the odd thing is that the program installed on the hard disk WILL RUN when I boot from a restore or Norton system CD! Yet, when I reboot into my system on the hard drive, I'm back to the error message. With brand new system software the application will crash as before. Short of completing re-installing the Office 2001 suite (which I don't want to do, as I will likely lose all my email and address book and calendar) or re-initializing the hard drive and completely starting over, losing everything, I'm at a loss. I have run Norton (de-fragged the HD, ran anti-virus, etc.), checked my hardware with the hardware test disk, used Disk First Aid, all to no avail - no problems with memory, hardware or software indicated. The only thing I haven't done is update drivers, primarily because I have a newer (3.2.8) disk driver on the system than the Driver Utility has, and I don't want to replace it with 3.2.7. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be causing this, or have any ideas before I'm forced to take this to a Mac repair facility? Thanks in advance...

Greetings to all - Thank you for your replies and help. I did this in reverse order to the posts. Trashing the ASLM, Finder, Mac OS and System Prefs provided the same result - Type 2 error at Word start-up. I had tested extensions using the extensions manager in sets of 5 with no change previously; I restarted with all extensions off (shift key at start-up) and got the same Type 2 error when launching MS Word.
Further info: I've tried this with VM at 1M + installed memory and with VW at double installed memory and it made no difference (I've always used VM in substantial blocks, even with VPC, which I use daily). I've removed ATM 4.6 as a precaution. I've also tried to remove everything that interfaces with MS Word - PrinToPDF comes to mind, as well as all non-original fonts.
I'm puzzled by one thing, which may be nothing but a curiosity, and it may have to do with the way I'm installing MS Word in an attempt to overcome this issue. As you know, Office 2001 provides you with a number which you need to retain upon installation. My original number, then, becomes superceded with each install; in other words, the last 4 numbers changes, out of the original 54092-XXX-XXXXXXX-XXXXX number provided. A number shows up on the initial lauch window; the problem I detect is that this number isn't the number given at the last install, but the ORIGINAL number I was given when the program was originally installed. This 'suggests' that perhaps the problem is with MS Word itself, as you'd think the program at lauch would recognize the new ID number given when the program files are re-installed using custom install. As an aside, I originally tried to do a 'drag and drop install of the Office 2001 folder, as suggested on the install disk; the system read the item numbers and gave me a 'preparing to copy' message and a spinning beach ball for 20 minutes before I was more or less forced to restart the computer with the reset button. I'm unsure this makes any difference, given that the program will launch with a boot disk, and all of the other modules will launch as they always have.
I'm appreciative of your help and comments. I didn't realize that this forum existed before, having been using a local MUG forum exclusively, and I suspect I'll use it a lot in the coming months as I coax an aging machine to continue working. This may be the first time in 20 years of Mac ownership that a technician might be called for, but I'm hoping for an easier solution.

  • IChat won't open after OS update

iChat has always worked fine for me, despite having a franken-mac. After yesterday's software update for OS X, I can no longer open iChat. Not even for a second. Bounces once in the dock, and then nothing. Ditto for opening from the app menu. iChat status icon in the right menubar is fixed on "unavailable," and won't let me select available or the buddies list. I'm fair with hardware, but not with software, any suggestions?
    Running OS 10.4.4, iChat 3.1.1
System as below with 1.5 GB SDRAM, and iSight.
    Thanks!

Thanks! After getting NO results with 1) restarting my computer, 2) opening iChat from applications folder, 3) reinstalling iChat from my Tiger CD, 4) installing iChat to a new HD partition, 5) running Cocktail, 6) RebuildX-driven desktop rebuild, 7) repairing permissions muliple times, and 8) cursing at the top of my lungs while shaking my white-knuckled fists in the general direction of my monitor, the Combo update made iChat work immediately after the initial restart! • Dual Booting with 2 drives

I have 2 HDs in my system, an 80GB with windows and my 40GB with solaris 10. The installation went fine, but i can never get the boot manager set for the two OSes.....if anyone can give me any ideas on what i should do (either using the windows boot manager or solaris's manager), i'd apprectiate it

    Hi Don,
Yes, zapping pram is agood idea - but it always scares the xxx!! out of me! I don't really know what it is but i do it for the G3 sometimes. however........ in the meantime it's fixed! I jumpered the 2 drives the other way round (reversed Master/slave) and it boots just as nature intended. Perhaps a quick zap of the pram and maybe even a desktop rebuild is in order. Thanks for your advice and inspiration. Meanwhile it's time for all respectable London citizens to go to bed zzzzzzzzzzz

  • System problem - MAYBE OSX related...?

I have no definitive answer or resolution thus far for this
problem in the forums and wanted to re-summarize it here, one more time, to see if anyone has
any other suggestions before i toss in the towel on self-repair efforts and invest in Apple Service.
    Problem:
    On a dual MDD G4 1.25, which i normally boot/use OS 9 on)
there is now a system 'hang time' of anywhere from 15-25 secs. in various circumstances including:
On boot-up, just after the Finder has loaded, I can move the mouse cursor but the Mac won't respond to clicks for up to 15-20 secs. Then, the "buffered clicks" get executed at once.
This hang time also occurs within certain applications, and on startup of IE Explorer there is an abnormal delay between the Open command and completion of startup cycle(opening to Home Page).
At first it appears a system freeze, but then ultimately system interactivity resumes eventually.
This machine is on a high-end Tripp-Lite power conditioner in a recording studio.
The problem seemed to begin after a day where i had multiple power fluctuations/outages requiring cold reboot several times.
I have swapped out both 512 Dimms and tried running with each separately and the problem remained.
TechTools has been run, OSX Permission Repairs run/re-run..
and i've done an OS 9-only "restore/reinstall" of that
System. I also ran a defragmentation off of techtools.
    Memory 'tested' as okay.
My internal HD is a 160g, one partition.
Since the problem occurs within OS 9 and i did reinstall that system, i would tend to think that rules out the System.
I can't detect any similar problem under OSX!
Things tried that didn't resolve it:
Emptying Servers Folder in the System Folder. Desktop Rebuild, PRAM/NVRAM resets, VM Off, Extensions OFF restart, (no change), Startup Items Folder/Prefs Folder EMPTIED and restart; no change. All Devices (USB/Firewire & Cable Modem, Keyboard/Mouse) disconnected/Restart; no change.
MemTest run on Dimms; Reported as OK.
Is there any point in reinstalling Sys software given all
this, or any ideas on what else to try?
    Thanks,
    Mike

Ron, I did, (conflicting opinions about Norton notwithstanding) run a Volume/Directory test from NDD (it is
a cumbersome process given that Norton must be on a separate computer and the machine in question must be in target-firewire mode to "access" the OS 9 System Folder - since the Norton app will not startup on the MDD machine...
"Apparently," it was able to process a test and no errors
were reported after running it, or, Tech Tools, on that System Folder.
I appreciate the idea. Not sure if there's an easier way to 'get at' the folder off a Norton Utilities disk as long as it resides in the peculiar dual-boot environment which presents a variety of challenges for anyone seeking to run any type of OS 9 diagnostics from a non OSX-based startup disk... not to mention the screwy reinstall/restore configuration of this particular Apple incarnation's install disk "set."
To put it bluntly, Mac really went out of its way to discourage any OS 9 loyalists with their "last OS 9 machine"
    --but i digress....
    Thanks

  • OS 7.6 data recovery nightmare

    Hello,
    I have a problem I can't seem to solve:
I have a system 7.6 formatted 1.2gb quantum fireball HD which appears to have been initialized (or the directories are corrupt somehow). On this drive are a number of simpletext files that contain research data. I have connected this drive via a PCI SCSI port to a g4 macintosh running OS 10.4, and have been able to run various file scavenging applications on the bad drive. No physical damage is detected by any of these programs (R-studio, Virtual Lab, Data Rescue II, File Salvage).
The problem is, these file recovery programs all 'see' the files, but when I recover them they are gibberish.
I have read that HFS uses a dual fork method of storage and that perhaps these recovery applications are unable to connect the resource fork with the data fork for any given file, and thus I am getting gibberish upon performing the recovery process.
Any help or insight would be much appreciated.

    elderboy79,
The number one problem is the automatic rebuilding of the desktop that occurs when you move a drive from an old OS to a new OS and back. Zip disk files are very susceptible to modification by auto desktop rebuilding between systems.
I take a disk or drive to OS 9.x before moving it to an OS X computer. Typically, a flash drive from the 9 machine to the X machine works best. OS 8.1 to X has also worked OK.
Disk Warrior software will clean up directory mishaps, too.
If you have a dual boot G4, boot into 9 and try reading your 7.6 hard drive. Hopefully, you have backup copies that can be read on the original 7.6 Mac and new copies made for transfer to a newer intermediate OS Machine.

  • Lost CD burn softwarre

I have an emac running OS 9.2.2 and for years I have burned CDs. Suddenly, when I try to burn a CD, I get a dialog box indicating that the burn operation cannot be done because the formatting application cannot be found. ???
Where is it? What can I do to help find it? I need the CD burns to provide Xmas presents to my children.
I recently rebuild my desktop and since then have had "lost software" indications but I have always been able to "find" it.
Thanks for any help you can give me.

    bitmeisterxx,
    Welcome to the Apple Discussions!
Try opening Control Panels> Extensions Manager and make sure the Authoring Support and other extensions are enabled, per Niel's post. Also check this post by Don Archibald. It may help to use Extensions Manager's View As Packages option and go through the list to make sure the usual system extensions sets are enabled.
How did you rebuild the desktop? A normal sucessful desktop rebuild solves a problem with applications not opening as expected, not make it worse. It's possible the desktop rebuild is itself corrupted. This can happen if the initial desktop is corrupt and you use the usual rebuild method of holding down option-command keys during startup. That has the effect of appending the updated desktop information to the existing invisible Desktop DB and Desktop DF files. You can force-delete the old desktop database files instead, which forces the Mac to create an entirely new desktop database. There are a number of third-party utilities to do this, such as File Buddy (which does a lot more besides) or the freeware Trash Desktop; try rebuilding the desktop that way and see if that helps.

  • Quadra 630 IDE drive.

I need a way to retrieve data from a Quadra 630 that stopped working years ago. I got an IDE to USB cable to hook it up and the drive is spinning and will prompt the USB storage device install if I boot into Windows, and will show up on the list of drives in Disk Utility. However, the drive will not initialize I'm guessing because the file system is not recognizable? I'm running OS X 10.6.7 dual-boot with Windows 7 Ultimate 64-bit. Any ideas? This is NOT an SCSI drive.

"Perhaps the drive is damaged, which would make this a futile endeavor."
We never give up on a drive until it is has been tried three ways.  Keep in mind that in the really old days you had to manually give the command to rebuild the desktop.  When moving zip disks back and forth from OS 7 to OS 8, 9 or X machines, I cancel the desktop rebuild.  Rewriting the desktop after it has been automatically rebuilt by newer software can lead to confusion.  The wider the jump in systems, the greater chance of trouble.
The safest method of file transfer is from original hardware to a newer external storage device.  Then to an original beige G3 running a newer OS.  Then out to a USB device, then to any new machine that is USB capable from the factory.  Keep in mind that there is no such thing as a truely beige G3.  All cases after the introduction of the SE were platinum, Apples new beige until the iMac with its fruit basket of colors.
So, from an Apple IIe to a IIc unidisk to a Quadra 700 to an external SCSI zip drive to a G3 to a zip drive in a Blue and White G3 with USB on board or an external USB zip to a current machine.  That is thirty years of file transfer capability.  Just a few steps inbetween.  Each generation had its comfort zone for seamless file transfers.
If newer operating systems saw older drives and data storage in a truly transparent state, the rebuild desktop message would never come up.

    A. Invest in a UPS to go with your line conditioner.
    B. Run Apple Hardware Test
    C. PMU reset and/or reset-nvram in Open Firmware.<<
Hi and Thanks. Yes a UPS is on order.
As to resolving the existing problem, I have performed
Steps B and C. The problem was unchanged.
<div class="jive-quote">Are you working off one drive? two? same bus or separate?<<</div>
One 160g drive (same bus, one large partition).
Might want to zero your drives, even invest in a couple new drives (Hitachi T7K250 160GBs $72 each OWC but out of stock) or something similar. Even Maxtor 300GB 16MB cache are nice.<<</div>
So this could in fact be symptomatic of a damaged HD?
This is the major step I have not taken as of yet. Reason
being, given that OSX seems to function without issues,
I questioned why OS 9 would behave erratically on the same
    HD.
If memtest says RAM is ok, that helps. Best test for RAM there is for consumers.<<</div>
Yes, a couple of memtest tests have "okayed" the Dimms.
You've reinstalled programs from install disks?
    Tried with fresh preferences?<<
Applications/Programs have NOT been reinstalled because it
does not seem to be appliation-related. The problem appears on boot-up with the new 'hang' time after desktop appears, per previous description. It manifests with similar delayed processing periods in certain applications also. Hence I
surmise it to be Hardware or System vs application-specific.
Prefs have been replaced by way of trashing ALL prefs from the original System Prefs folder at the time System 9 was
reinstalled and subsequently using a Temp-Prefs folder to
remove them all and reboot. With NO prefs, the identical
problem appeared during the startup completion process.
Latest version of TTP for Classic OS 9? for OS X? (4.5.1 beta is pretty good). <<</div>
Yes, using the latest version of Tech Tools and it has been
run on the OSX application but there is no feature (that I
found) within TTP that allows one to choose ONLY the System 9 Folder (not on TechTools 4+ versions). It boots only as,
    and in, OSX.

  • Th e FIX?  A new Hard Drive?

First - what is the largest HD I can use? Any specs to avoid or get?
Second - I think this may make my computer more useable. It has been a crashy iMac - but so was my DVSE 400 - plenty of RAM, have tried PRAM zapping Desktop rebuild, defragging, etc. A few years back I suffered a complete HD failure, but ran First Aid three times and brought it back to life. I think it may still be a corrupted drive. BTW, I have clean installed a few times and I get a decent system for a few days, then it reverts back to its old tricks.
Third - what is REALLY frustrating is that my friend at work has an old PIII that had similar issues. He installed XP, and it is a rock now, and he is happy with a cheap fix. NOT MY APPLE! Tried to install Tiger, with right firmware, etc., and it wouldn't take. So much for the "easy to work with Macs" bit.

    Hi Brian,
First: The iMac cannot use more than 127GB of any given hard drive - this is due to a limitation in the iMac's drive controller. No software/partitioning will get around this. Warnings about 7200 RPM drives being too hot tend to be false, as many new drives actually run cooler than the iMac's stock drive.
Second: What problems have you been having, specifically? Just random freezing/crashing? Anything else? Have you tried running Disk First Aid recently? I would suggest booting from your iMac Install/Mac OS 9 install or whatever CD and running Disk First Aid from there.
Have you tried backing up your data and then completely reformatting the drive? If there is significant corruption, this may be the best way to eradicate it.
Are there any third party drivers installed or hardware devices connected that could be causing problems?
Last thing, it could be dodgy RAM that's causing the freezes/instability, especially if the issues are not related to a specific application or whatever.
Third: I'm not sure why XP would help - perhaps your friend had a bad install of the previous operating system. You have said you've tried clean installs, so that isn't the issue for you.
What problems did Tiger give you, specifically? Mac OS X not wanting to install could be a symptom of dodgy RAM. Is the RAM the original that came from Apple or a third party? If it's from a third party, do you know the vendor?
Hopefully there's something in there you'll find useful...

  • Installing applications with OS 9

We have an iMac running OS 9.0.4. Back when I was using Mac OS 7, I read in some books on Mac OS, that installing an application with the extensions off (shift key at startup), may help avoid extension conflicts and make the program more stable. Is this still an issue with OS 9?
I also read that doing a desktop rebuild with extensions off was advisable. Is this still good advice?
Thanks for your thoughts on this.

Hi, motc. Yes to both questions. The likelihood that you'll encounter extension-related problems while performing either process with extensions turned on is quite small — but you eliminate that chance completely if they're off.
If you start up with extensions off, and then you install a package that includes extensions which would otherwise conflict with other extensions on your system, they will go right ahead and conflict the next time you start up with extensions turned on. But at least you'll know you didn't get an installation that was corrupted or aborted by an extension conflict that arose during the installation process.

  • Possible corrupt extension problem? (G4 - OS 9.1)

After a bad shutdown, (my fault) of my G4 everything still worked ok apart from one weird problem. Some of the programs I use (Quark for instance) don't 'remember' the previous file location. For instance, if I dig down some folders and pull up a file, and then immediately try to open up another file from the same location, the program defaults to the desktop, and I have to dig through the folders again. It's the same with 'Save As', it always defaults to one particular location, not the previously used one.
I've tried desktop rebuild, zapping the PRAM, Diskwarrior, (which found some errors it corrected, and I've used 'scavenge' mode), Norton Disk Doctor but still the problem pesists.
I tried deleting the System Preferences file, which actually worked, until I rebooted.
    I've now tried re-installing 9.1 (but haven't yet tried a 'Clean Install').
I've just booted up with extensions off, and all programs work as they should, i.e. they remember the previous file location just used.
So, I'm thinking it might be a corrupted extension, but haven't a clue which one affects the file location issue above.
Can anyone point me in the right direction? Would this problem get solved by doing a 'clean install'? I've backed-up the existing system folder, however, I'm worried that if I do a clean install, I will have to copy back all my existing extensions & preference files, which will probably re-introduce the same problem.
Please could someone advise on the best way forward?
By the way, I've experienced this problem previously, and running Diskwarrior fixed it, but not this time. I ran Norton first, and have since found out that this can create further problems, and that I should have run Diskwarrior first.
Any help would be greatly appreciated, as this is getting to me.
    Thanks
    Paul

    Hi, Paul -
    Welcome to Apple's Discussions.
There is a setting in the General Controls control panel for that, in the section named Documents. The choice of "Last folder used in the application" should be selected to achieve what you want.
Sometimes a preference file gets damaged or corrupted, and the OS will behave erratically. The solution for that is to throw away the preference file and restart; a new one will be created with default settings. In this case, try throwing away the preference file named General Controls Prefs, empty the Trash, then restart. Once rebooted, open the General Controls control panel and reset that option.
If you can not make that setting in General Controls control panel -
Make sure the following are turned on in Extensions Manager: Multiple Users (Control Panels); Multi-User Startup (Extensions); Security Library (Extensions); Security Manager (Extensions). Note that Multiple Users can be turned off within the control panel, it just needs to be in the active set.
Add more memory to General Controls control panel (in spite of its designation, it's actually an application). Doubling the original amount is usually sufficient.
