Desktop & screensaver issues
replaced faulty hard drive several days ago, firewired data from my imac, updated all apple software. everything was fine until yesterday, when i noticed that both the screensaver photos were very low resolution and the desktop photos wouldn't rotate as set. resolution on any other application is fine.
any suggestions?
Hello Revah and Welcome to Apple Discussions ...
Try trashing the desktop preference file and see if that helps. Here's how...
Locate this file: com.apple.desktop.plist It's here: /Home/Library/Preferences
Open the Preferences folder, locate that file and drag it to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. You will have to reset your Desktop preferences but that takes less than minute. Go to System Preferences, try your Desktop pictures...
Also, here is some information regarding memory and MacBooks and graphics performance:
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=303407
Hopefully the desktop preference files was the culprit...

IPhoto Deleted Albums Showing Up in Desktop & Screensaver Settings
I use a MacBook and an iMac. I keep all of my images on my iMac, but when I'm out and about, I import to the MacBook from my camera. Recently, I consolidated my library (First time since Leopard) and put everything to my iMac. I deleted all of the images from iPhoto. When I opened up my Desktop & Screensaver preferences to change my desktop, under the tab for iPhoto Albums, I all of the deleted albums. If I select them, I cannot remove them, and the images aren't there. I am guessing this is somewhere in the system, but not sure how to get rid of this issue. Thanks for the help!

Welcome to the Apple user discussion forums
I use a MacBook and an iMac. I keep all of my images on my iMac, but when I'm out and about, I import to the MacBook from my camera. Recently, I consolidated my library (First time since Leopard) and put everything to my iMac.
How did you do this? Export from MB and import to iMac? iPhoto Library Manager (IPLM)? how?
I deleted all of the images from iPhoto.
On which system - the MB or the iMac (I'm guessing the MB but not sure) ? How did you delete all images? Using iPhoto and dragging to the iPhoto trash then emptying the iPhoto trash? (this is the proper way) Or some other way?
When I opened up my Desktop & Screensaver preferences to change my desktop, under the tab for iPhoto Albums, I all of the deleted albums. If I select them, I cannot remove them, and the images aren't there. I am guessing this is somewhere in the system, but not sure how to get rid of this issue.
Is this on the MB or the iMac (again I'm guessing the MB and that you expect there to be no photos or anything else there on the MB - that everything is on the iMac - and that you have carefully verified that)? The answer will depend on what you did (above) to get here
Is iPhoto working perfectly on both systems except this? can you see all events and photos within the events that should be there on each system?
Again I'm assuming that at this time you want all photos on the iMac and no photos on teh MB but please verify.

No thumbnail images when viewing pictures folder via desktop & screensaver
When I go into system preferences and then Desktop & Screensaver I chose the pictures folder. It does not show any thumbnail images of any of the contents of my Pictures Folder, yet clicking on a blank area of space applies a desktop???? I have never seen this before anyone have any ideas?
There may be some minor issue or glitch in the system; and perhaps even
starting up in SafeBoot and using Disk Utility's repair disk permissions, then
quitting the utility, and restarting normally may help repair this situation.
Some file types, in some cases, may not appear in icon or thumbnail view;
and there are a few image editor applications whose custom icon thumb-
nail views actually appear as a generic icon w/o an image; but an original
import from a camera will have the correct thumbnail captured by Finder
and/or Preview (or iPhoto) by first-contact with the image from the camera;
but Photoshop or other third party shareware or freeware may not show one.
For a normal situation where a thumbnail image icon should be present:
Open up a finder window and do like this: from Finder=View=Show View Options
=Show Icon Preview. That will give you a thumbnail view of whatever document it is.
You can select to do this setting for all windows
Apparently your situation is different in that there may be a permissions or other
issue going on in the system; so try routine maintenance and also see if the images
are in the correct location for the system to see them. If the system is really messed
you may have to consider repairing it; try booting from the native disk utility in OS X
boot/installer disc, repair disk and repair disk permissions; then reboot using Startup
Disk in the boot disc's utilities menu (in installer menubar) and immediately press &
hold the Shift key on startup to engage SafeBoot; and re-repair disk permissions
from the System's hard drive located Disk Utility to re-correct these permissions, as
they will probably not be proper for the fully updated system running in the computer.
Then restart normally.
There may be file damage, so if that is discovered through additional troubleshooting,
you may have to consider a new system folder, as in "Archive & Install" then update.
Repair disk permissions between all update & install steps of system and other software.
If you have and use a utility interface tool such as OnyX (runs free, is donationware) from
Titanium Software, download from their site; and run all the checkbox items in Automation,
and then restart the computer - or set its preferences to do that also, automatically - this
may help general system health. It may not be able to fix something deeper in the system;
but a third party disk utility such as DiskWarrior or Drive Genius2 may help in other matters.
In some cases, depending on what images are involved and where they came from, be
they a chosen set of personal images you've directed the system to use as background
desktop images in Finder, or a set of Apple-supplied images, the results can be different.
I use a folder of camera created scenics as desktop backgrounds and use ToyViewer to
edit and rotate at a most basic level, since I try to make photos in the camera and not edit.
Sometimes, these will have generic non-image icons and not thumbnails; there is a way
to work around the issue should a whole folder of them go bad or change over w/o notice.
Hopefully someone who has fixed this problem will write a follow up; it is getting late in my
timezone and I am running on empty per this topic, among others... You may resort to an
Apple help or Apple Support documents search for a matching topic. That's a huge library.
Good luck & happy computing! -
I took my G5 to the Apple store for a check(fan speed) and when I got it back, when I go to System Prefs/desktop & Screensaver I can no longer see the folders representing the photo albums. I thought it might be an iPhoto Issue, but now I'm not so sure. I'm running 10.4.10 ans iPhoto 6.0.6. I created another user and tried the same thig and it's not working there either. I have 4100+ images in 30+ albums.
I'm almost ready to load 10.4 on my 2nd internl drive and then use migration assistant, but I don't know if THAT would work. I have repaired permissions, ran Diskwarrior 4.0, thrown out plists and prefs, and caches. I've even removed the .xml file, still without success.OK FOLKS!!! GET THIS!! It was a single corrupt photo. The photo worked fine within iPhoto, but caused the disconnect with the system prefs. it wasn't a very big photo, or old, but I did drag it from a web page.
I ended up creating new iPhoto Libraries, and importing the photos until it broke. Then I went through the files within the one questionable folder until it broke. I pitched the file from the iPhoto Library, and my hard drive but the Library stayed broken. I just deleted it, and started over. I have all my original photos back, and in the proper albums again. Now to the tweaking all over again. 6000+ photos to go through. -
The System Preference:Desktop&Screensaver will not open. I get a rotating circle that never stop rotating. I have to do a Force Stop.
Quit System Preferences if it's running. In the Finder, hold down the option key and select
Go ▹ Library
from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following item to the Desktop:
Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
Launch System Preferences and test. If you still have the issue, put the item on the Desktop back where it came from and post again. Otherwise, delete the item. -
After selecting System Preferences and the selecting Desktop/Screensaver the laptop stays in a frozen state. It continually shows a spinning wheel and even after a Force Quit and also Holding Down the Power Button to shut laptop down anytime I go into Desktop/Screensaver it still shows a Spinning Wheel. What can I do to try to resolve this issue????? I'm thinking I will have to Re-Install Mountain Lion on my MBP. I just purchased this as a used system and also my 1st Mac coputer. It is most probably something I have done BUT now need to resolve this irritating issue since I can't change my desktop picture nor change my screensaver. Who knows what else may be going on.....
Please, someone give some constructive guidance...Quit System Preferences if it's running. In the Finder, hold down the option key and select Go ▹ Library from the menu bar. From the Library folder, delete the following item, if it exists:
Caches/com.apple.systempreferences
and move the following item to the Desktop:

After Lion install, tried to change wallpaper in "system preferences"->"desktop & screensaver" appeared but immediatly freeze, so force quit.
Then System preference pane as it immediatly freezes if I try to open it. Have to "force quit" each time.
Found many people have the exact issue and highly likely it's the bug of lion.
Anybody found a solution? Thx.It has to do with a problem accessing the images on the home>images folder. To solve it, just move its content (iphoto library included) to another place. Then, restart System Preferences. Moving your iPhoto library to another location seems to fix the problem. I am sure Apple will issue an update to correct this problem. But, for now this seems to work for me.

Desktop & Screensaver prefs won't load
Since upgrading to 10.4.5 I've been unable to access Desktop & Screensaver in my System Preferences. It says it's loading, but will not do so.
I have run a Hardware Test, verified and reset premissions, and have also used Disk First Aid after restarting from my Installation Disk - all to no avail.
Has anyone else had this problem? If so, any solutions?
Cheers,
Sally
G5 iMac Mac OS X (10.4.5) 1.8GHz, 512MB RAMOkay, this sounds very interesting and I would recommend you re-install Mac OS X, I am very sure it will cure this issue. I cannot think of anything else that can easily make Desktop and Screensaver to load. If you want to keep all of your data on your machine and just install the system (Mac OS X), then do an "Archive & Install". It is an option when you go to re-install. At this point, that would be the easiest thing to do instead of figuring out other ways.

Desktop & Screensaver - Secondary desktop window freezes
I recently connected my macbook air to an external monitor and everything was running fine, until I tried to change the background on the external display. Before it first happened, I was able to browse through the pre-installed apple desktop backgrounds, but when I chose a folder containing my photos, the window froze. Now every time I reopen the secondary display window, it freezes as soon as it opens. If i unplug the monitor and reopen Desktop & Screensaver, it works just fine.
I hope that is not your
solution.
Shut down and reboot?
Its ok , Thanks for trying .

Hi, please help! Every time I got to the desktop/screensaver preference panel I get the beachball and then crashes. What can I do?
I also dont have the library folder that everyone says to go into and delete some stuff in there, i dont have a folder called that.
Thanks so muchIf you're running Lion -- this forum is for Snow Leopard -- you won't see the Library folder in question (in Snow Leopard, Leopard and Tiger it's visible in your home folder.) If you are running Lion, to have access to that folder, open Terminal in Applications>Utilities and copy/paste the following and hit return.
chflags nohidden ~/Library
Basic informaton: there are three Library folders: one in your home folder, one in /Library (the startup volume) and one in /System/Library. You should generally stay out of the latter and be very cautious about anything you do in the second one.
Some basic troubleshooting information for this problem. One of the first things to try is to create a new admin user account, log in to that and see if the problem persists. If it does, it's a system wide issue. if not, it's peculiar to your normal account. You can also do this by enabling the Guest Account and logging into that.
Which files were you thinking of deleting from your home folder Library? -

Close PSe and then do this:
Navigate to the Elements Organizer settings folder:
>> Windows XP: C:\Documents and Settings\[User Name]\Application Data\Adobe\Elements Organizer\[Version]\Organizer\
>> Win Vista/7/8: C:\Users\[User Name]\AppData\Roaming\Adobe\Elements Organizer\[Version]\Organizer\
>> Macintosh OS: //Users/[User Name]/Library/Application Support/Adobe/Elements Organizer/[Version]/Organizer/
Rename psa.prf to psa.old.
Retry launching Elements Organizer
Hope this helps. -
How to clear folders added to Desktop & Screensaver?
Last March, BDAqua wrote that I trash the following preference files in my User/Library to clear the folders I've added to System Preferences' Desktop & Screensaver:
1. /Preferences/com.apple.desktop.plist
2. /Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.(12 digit hex number).plist
3. /Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.slideshow.(12 digit hex number).plist
I've tried that a few times and the folders remain there. Can a Terminal command get rid of them?I thought the benefits would go to all Macs with more than one core. If that's the case, I'm sticking with Tiger until I have to get a new computer, which could be a while. Thanks for straightening me out on that. Now I'm even more disappointed how quickly the Core Duos were replaced with Core 2 Duos. I should have waited a few more months before buying this computer.

Hi,
Everytime i open the desktop & screensaver button, it keeps loading a while then becomes frozen. I can't click into the system perference anymore and I can't change anything of the desktop or screensaver. However, other applications are all running normal. Help!!!
ThanksWelcome to Apple Support Communities
That's a problem with the Desktop settings file, so you have to delete it. First, open a Finder window, select Go menu (on the menu bar) > Go to Folder, and type ~/Library/Preferences. Then, delete "com.apple.desktop.plist" and restart.
After restarting, OS X will create a new Desktop settings file and you will be able to open the Desktop and Screen Saver preference pane without any problem. This is caused because of a corrupted settings file
