Desktop/Screensaver preference crashes
Hi, please help! Every time I got to the desktop/screensaver preference panel I get the beachball and then crashes. What can I do?
Thanks so much
Wow! Thank you guys so much for your time. It actually worked. I tried ALL of the things you guys recommended, and this is the one that worked: ~(yourUserName)/Library/Preferences/com.apple.preference.desktopscreeneffect.pl ist
I deleted that, and then I was all good. I wonder why that happened? Anyways, thanks for your time, and great job. Thank you thank you!

Unable to open desktop/screensaver preferences
when i open preferemces i can open anything other that the desktop screensaver preferences, when i open it, it freezes then shuts down how can i fix that?
Try this:
In the Finder, choose Home from the Go menu.
Open the Library folder.
Open the Preferences folder.
Open the ByHost folder.
Locate the files named :
com.apple.screensaver.Nature Patterns.0017f2f12896.plist
com.apple.screensaver.Beach.0017f2f12896.plist
com.apple.screensaver.0017f2f12896.plist
or something similar and drag them to the Trash, but don't empty the trash yet.
Open System Preferences.
Adjust your System Preference settings as desired.
If this causes problems you can get the files out of the Trash and replace them back onto the folder you took them out of. -
Desktop/Screensaver Preferences
Hi there,
I recently installed Snow Leopard on a first gen Core Solo Mini with 2 gigs of RAM, and migrated a whole account data from another computer running Lion. When I go to Desktop/Screensaver preferences, I cannot get to the desktop preferences at all, and no screensavers appear on the left box. I tried copying the Screensavers folder from another HDD (an older SL install that works as it should), restarted, but no dice.
Does anybody have any idea of what's going on?

You can't do this, Apple changed things in Lion especially in the hidden Users/Library, can't use Lion OS X files in Snow Leopard
You will need to manually copy your data out of the migrated from Lion user account folders that contain anything Music, Pictures, Movies etc., (except Library) off the machine to a regular storage drive.
Then your going to need to create another Admin user (if you don't have one already) log into it and delete the migrated from Lion user account, reboot, then recreate the same named user account, this will give you a 10.6 version of the Users/Library again, no Lion taint.
Then log into it and return files, but not the iPhoto Library or the iTunes folder, you will need to first get the orignal pictures and music out and reimport them into the 10.6 versions of these programs.
To get the orignal photo's out of the 10.7 iPhoto Library, right or control click on the 10.7 iPhoto Library and "show package contents" inside is a Originals folder, move that out and open 10.6 iPhoto and import that folder of pictures, they will go into the 10.6 iPhoto Library in the Pictures folder automatically.
In the 10.7 iTunes folder there is another inside folder that just contains your music etc. copy that out and import into 10.6 version of iTunes, you music will then be imported into the 10.6 version of the iTunes Music folder, your 10.7 playlists will be gone unfortunatly.
That's all I can help you with there, but the same tactic must be played for any other software that was tainted by Lion verisions.
What your doing basically is "reverting to Snow Leopard" Apple doesn't expect people to do this when they employed the migration assistant/ TimeMachine system, it's all forward and no reverse.
Create a new TM drive on the 10.6 system
Read this here, it's basically what your doing, reverting from 10.7 to 10.6, but your using another machine with 10.6 installed already.
How to revert your Mac to Snow Leopard
Read this here, bootable clones are superior to TimeMachine's limitations.

Screensaver preferences crashing after uninstalling screensaver
I had the Electric Sheep screensaver installed but didn't like it so I removed it in the screensaver preference pane, and now when I try to select some screensavers the preferences crash. The ones in particular that I'm having trouble with are Arabesque, RSS Visualiser, and Shell. The rest work fine.
Any idea how to fix this? When it crashes it gives me the option to reset it but that didn't fix the problem.when I try to select some screensavers the preferences crash.
The .plist files? Never heard of those crashing? Or do you mean Arabesque, RSS Visualiser, and Shell are crashing?
It's possible Electric Sheep messed up your directory. Check Home/Library/Preerences to see if the Electric Sheep screensaver left any preferences behind. If so, then trash them.
If you have Diskwarrior, I would run it directly from the disc. If not, boot up from your install disc to run the repair disk setting. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
Click Repair Disk.
Restart when done.

I remembered reading about some chap (or chapette) that had a similar problem when trying to add a desktop picture or folder using the lower-left add “+” key. And that’s exactly what I had, e.g., a nestled folder on my HD with third party pictures in it.
3. So why not give it a try says I. I deleted the link to that folder and voila, all is again right with the world. Well, at least for now.
If guesses count, it seems that System Preferences. Desktop & Screensaver was trying to access that buried folder and there was a bad “link”, corruption, or whatever precluding that from happening; and ergo the crash.
I don’t at all hold that’s the way it really happened, but indeed the problem disappeared when that third party folder was deleted.
Curious and curiousier am I. But happier. -
Desktop & Screensaver preference problem
Hi,
I'm having a problem with the Desktop & Screensaver section of the preferences. It shows me 2 Aperture libraries to choose from, but with the same content. The second problem is that I can't add any new folders containing pictures because I will always get an error "Duplicate Folder".
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance
Franz

*sorry. Picture upload failed.I don't know if this is your problem, but I do know that people who are using Aperture have a problem in Desktop that can be solved by launching iPhoto--you don't have to actually USE iPhoto, it just has to run once and create the iPhoto Library. You might give that a try.

please help...Try to delete com.apple.desktop.plist from the library.
1. Click on an empty spot to make Finder active.
2. Press and hold the option key and click the Go menu in the menubar.
3. From the dropdown select Library.
4. Open the Preferences folder.
5. Look for "com.apple.desktop.plist" file.
6. Control click the file and select "Move To Trash".
7. Reboot.

Desktop and Screensaver preferences crashes upon opening it...
hi,
recently for no reason whenever i try to go to desktop and screensaver option in the system preferences it crashes automatically and means i have to force quit it. Its very odd. Is there a way to stop it doing this?
thanksHello t:
recently for no reason whenever i try to go to desktop and screensaver option in the system preferences it crashes automatically and means i have to force quit it.
If it crashes, there should not be a force quit required. What do you see in the crash logs?
In any event, try trashing a preference file (com.apple.systempreferences.plist) and restarting.

Screensaver preference crashing/broken
When my mac went to screensaver this morning it just started the screen flashing every 2 seconds. So I went into preferences to choose a screensaver and it just hangs for 2 seconds and then boots me out of preferences. I tried repairing permissions and verifying the disk etc but still the same after numerous re-boots. I can't even disable the screensaver as it just boots me out of the preferences. Everything else is working perfectly.
Anyone got any ideas how to solve this?
TIA
ps its a 2.4 c2d iMac running 10.5.5I've recently started seeing the same thing. For me, it only happens on my PPC PowerBook.
I worked around the problem by deleting all the screensaver-related .plist files in [YourUserName]/Library/Preferences/ByHost/. After that going to the preference screen worked without crashing. I had to select a screen saver with the .saver extension ... anything with .qtz would crash immediately (I was using Arabesque.qtz, one of Apple's own savers, when I discovered the crash), so you might want to be sure you're using a .saver just to be on the safe side. -
Desktop/screensaver prefs, hang, crash
I have two monitors.
I installed 10.6.4, earlier, and a number of things began to go wrong, including the above: One of my monitors lost its desktop picture. When I tried to fix it with desktop/screensaver prefs, the system prefs basically crashed.
No biggie, but it seemed wise to me to wait, as I have in the past, for the bugs to be squeezed out of 10.6.4. I downloaded and installed 10.6.3 again, and most of the problems that came with 10.6.4 were gone. But not this one. I can change my desktop picture on my MAIN screen by choosing a picture in iphoto and selecting it for the desktop. The other screen can't be changed. The desktop/screensaver preference makes system preferences crash. I can live with this, of course, but if anybody can suggest a solution, I'd be grateful.Solved it.
Thanks to some other queries about this same thing,
I just took it farther than anything suggested: As follows. Went to library, preferences, and, from both regular prefs and "by host" prefs, I trashed:

Hi, please help! Every time I got to the desktop/screensaver preference panel I get the beachball and then crashes. What can I do?
I also dont have the library folder that everyone says to go into and delete some stuff in there, i dont have a folder called that.
Thanks so muchIf you're running Lion -- this forum is for Snow Leopard -- you won't see the Library folder in question (in Snow Leopard, Leopard and Tiger it's visible in your home folder.) If you are running Lion, to have access to that folder, open Terminal in Applications>Utilities and copy/paste the following and hit return.
chflags nohidden ~/Library
Basic informaton: there are three Library folders: one in your home folder, one in /Library (the startup volume) and one in /System/Library. You should generally stay out of the latter and be very cautious about anything you do in the second one.
Some basic troubleshooting information for this problem. One of the first things to try is to create a new admin user account, log in to that and see if the problem persists. If it does, it's a system wide issue. if not, it's peculiar to your normal account. You can also do this by enabling the Guest Account and logging into that.

Hi, I have a problem once again with desktop/screensaver panel crashing when I select it from system prefs. This happend about a year ago after a security update and I was stuck with this until the next update which put the problem right. Now,after the last update, its done it again! Is there anything I can do about this or do I just have to take a chance and hope that the next update (if there is going to be one?) will cure it?
cheers in anticipation,Tony Dellaway
G4 400mz Mac OS X (10.3.9) 512MoHi Tony Dellaway,
I just posted the same question as you - right before you - by seconds. (BJArt - System Preferences quitting) I wasn't aware of the update affecting my Desktop/Screen Saver in the past - I thought maybe it had to do with the Screen Saver I'm currently using. I'll watch your post as well as mine for any help or answers.

Screensaver and screensaver prefpan crashing my Mac, can't disable it!
I recently figured out that what's causing my Mac to lock up is the screensaver. If I let the Mac idle until the screensaver kicks in, it goes to a black screen and I can't get out of it. So I opened the screensaver preferences, and that results in a spinning wheel of death (spod), with a force restart the only recourse.
So, I can't let the screensaver kick in, and I can't disable the screensaver either. It's a pickle.
If the system is on the login screen, and the screensaver activates, it works just fine. So it's particular to my user account.
I've searched the forums and found many similar but not identical issues. So far I have seen advised and tried…
trash com.apple.screensaver.*.plist
trash com.apple.systempreferences.plist
trash com.apple.desktop.plist (although I couldn't find this to delete)
(above were for files both in ~/Preferences and ~/Preferences/ByHost/)
Disk Utility; repaired permissions
also repaired disk (even booted into recovery mode to repair on the boot drive)
I'm using the built-in "Floating" theme, and it's pointing at a folder full of small photos. There are 1800 photos in the folder, so I thought moving that folder might help, but it didn't.
When trashing SystemPreferences.plist, at least opening the "Desktop & Screensaver" preference pane starts at Desktop, which at first was fine, until I clicked on Screensaver — then it'd spod. However now it will spod for a while on Desktop, as the thumbnails (for default Apple Desktop pictures) draw incredibly slowly (i.e. 10 minutes to draw a page), then I can scroll down, and repeat the wait-for-it-to-draw. Very odd. If at any time I click on Screensaver though, it'll spod indefinitely (I've left it for hours to see if it wakes up… no joy). And I can't click on the other category in Desktop, Solid Color, to select that. Clicking it does nothing.
I'm really at a loss here. What other preference could be corrupt? What am I missing here?
I think I'll reinstall the OS from the recovery disk tonight. I can't go another day not using my system. But if anyone has any ideas… please chime in.
OS X 10.9.4, 27" iMac 2.8Ghz i7So here's a really weird update.
I booted into recovery mode (not for the first time today; I did it to repair disk), with intention of reinstalling the OS.
When I clicked on that, it said "you're not connected to the internet". Now hold on, how could that be. My wifi was on but not connected to my network. I selected it, and it asked for the password. I did NOT enter it, I did NOT connect.
Some tickle in the back of my brain all day has said "this is a network issue" but I can't even think of why.
So I rebooted without proceeding with the OS reinstall. I verified that I was connected to the internet, and I was. OK, so that must have been a fluke in the Recovery mode.
But just to be sure I opened the Desktop & Screen Saver prefs, and guess what — everything worked fine.
I even put my folder of photos back where it belongs, re-pointed the screen saver at it, and it's working.
So, ***. I know I had internet earlier on that Mac when it started crashing. I was looking up recovery ideas on it. But somehow, just clicking on install new OS, even though I didn't do it at all, tickled something and now it works.
We'll see how it is in the morning, and I'll install the update Greg recommended anyway, but man this is WEIRD.

IPhoto Deleted Albums Showing Up in Desktop & Screensaver Settings
I use a MacBook and an iMac. I keep all of my images on my iMac, but when I'm out and about, I import to the MacBook from my camera. Recently, I consolidated my library (First time since Leopard) and put everything to my iMac. I deleted all of the images from iPhoto. When I opened up my Desktop & Screensaver preferences to change my desktop, under the tab for iPhoto Albums, I all of the deleted albums. If I select them, I cannot remove them, and the images aren't there. I am guessing this is somewhere in the system, but not sure how to get rid of this issue. Thanks for the help!

How did you do this? Export from MB and import to iMac? iPhoto Library Manager (IPLM)? how?
I deleted all of the images from iPhoto.
On which system - the MB or the iMac (I'm guessing the MB but not sure) ? How did you delete all images? Using iPhoto and dragging to the iPhoto trash then emptying the iPhoto trash? (this is the proper way) Or some other way?
When I opened up my Desktop & Screensaver preferences to change my desktop, under the tab for iPhoto Albums, I all of the deleted albums. If I select them, I cannot remove them, and the images aren't there. I am guessing this is somewhere in the system, but not sure how to get rid of this issue.
Is this on the MB or the iMac (again I'm guessing the MB and that you expect there to be no photos or anything else there on the MB - that everything is on the iMac - and that you have carefully verified that)? The answer will depend on what you did (above) to get here
Is iPhoto working perfectly on both systems except this? can you see all events and photos within the events that should be there on each system?
Again I'm assuming that at this time you want all photos on the iMac and no photos on teh MB but please verify.

Thank youI figured it out! All I had to was restart the computer.

I can't save files in any location on my computer with Firefox 4. How do I fix this?
Even when the program is run as an admin, it still says that I don't have permission to save in any location (even documents). I believe that this started after I updated Internet Explorer to the newest version. Downloads work fine in other browsers,
