Desktop selections rearranges itself - bug

An extremely frustrating bug in finder is making me lose my mind. The problem is this:
I'll select some number of items on my desktop. When I move these items elsewhere (say, another folder) the majority of the icons on my desktop COMPLETELY rearrange themselves. The icons that have moved themselves are now selected.
Not all the icons move, just most of them, and I can't seem to find a pattern to establish what prevents those specific icons from moving.
This bug is infuriating. I spend a lot of time arrange the icons on my desktop just so, only to have my desktop arrangement put in a blender everytime I move icons. Anyone have any solutions?
Edit: This problem was happening in 10.4.9, and now also in 10.4.10

The problem also occurs when deleting a selection from the desktop. I haven't found any other resources on this issue and it's quite frustrating.
Surely someone has encountered this before?

  • Why are my applications that are assigned to specific desktops randomly rearranging themselves on other desktops?

I'm on a late 2013 Retina 13" MacBook Pro running OS X Mavericks Version 10.9.4 and for some reason most of my applications assigned to specific desktops are rearranging themselves to other desktops.
For example, I've created eight desktops. I've assigned Safari to appear on desktop three. While using Safari, when I swipe once from to left between desktops using my three fingers, I end up on desktop seven. It appears that Safari automatically reassigns it's self on desktop six. I swipe back to desktop three. From the dock, I find Safari and do a right click to have the application menu pop-up, I hover over options and assign Safari to "This Desktop" again. I begin using Safari, and if I'm unlucky, and I swipe from left to right I end up on desktop four.
This happens constantly and it's become annoying. Is this a bug?
For work, I use a late 2008 Non-Retina 15" MacBook Pro running OS X Mavericks Version 10.9.4 and that laptop has no issues.

Right click (cntl click) the icon on the dock.  Select options and set "assign to" None, All or This desktop.

  • Desktop icon duplicates itself in my safe file dialog

This is something that's been puzzling me for a while. Every once in a while my Desktop icon duplicates itself in my safe file dialog. I don't know when this happens, but I'm unable to remove them and it keeps growing and growing. Can anyone help me with a solution to stopping it? See link to image for example:
    http://www.diphthong.com/desktopdupexample.jpg

    Hi there:
That's an odd and unusual problem; and if you have tried resolving it
in any way, what you have tried would be helpful to note, so as to
not duplicate anything in reference you may have done already...
Have you tried to 'repair disk' - and also - 'repair disk permissions'
from Disk Utility? The version in the Install-Boot disk is most likely
to be able to fix this issue. Another possibility is listed right below.
{You could also see if simply holding the Shift key on a routine startup
until a login window and the words SafeBoot appear. Login, and then
when the desktop appears, choose from GO in the Finder menu, to
visit the Utilities (folder) and choose to run Disk Utility's first aid on
the Mac HD from there. Have it 'repair disk permission's, then quit
Disk Utility, and restart normally. This can fix a few things.} If not:
If you haven't tried booting the computer from the Installer OS X
disc (disc1 of the current OS in the computer) you could do that
by inserting the disc into the computer's optical drive and choose
to start or restart, and hold the C key down all the while this loads.
That may be awhile. The installer will likely show a language screen
once booted from, and it often chooses the default language in US
as english; so you should be able to ignore choosing a language.
The Disk Utility on this Installer disc is accessed by clicking on
menu bar titles in the Installer's header, the drop down menus will
have options to choose from; do not run the Installer itself.
There also are some shareware utilities, that can for a price, allow
the user to delve into several things that go beyond your symptom.
One that may work (though something free or already in your system
may be available) is called "File Buddy 9.0.1" a shareware utility, see:
    http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/11688
And there probably are other things to try; hopefully someone has a
shortcut idea that can get into this. Also, if you don't do routine things
to help maintain the OS X system, you should; beyond repair disk
permissions and other basic stuff. If you have and use OnyX from
Titanium Software to routinely run their Automation selection of items
then keep doing that, and restart after it runs. This can be set to do so.
    Good luck & happy computing!
PS: I started posting this some time ago...
and was interrupted. Sorry for the duplication!

  • Sometimes my maps and documents on my desktop are rearranged when I restart my computer

Sometimes my maps on my desktop are rearranged on the desktop when I restart the computer. Is there A way to go back to the original display and sort order?

That is a feature. Desktop folder acts as a holder folder.

  • IPad's desktop-like select+double-click bug

Suddenly my iPad is not responding as before. It is acting like a regular desktop window manager!
Now, when I touch an app icon, the icon is selected. A thin line appear around the icon, like it would be on a normal desktop window manager. Then to launch the app I have to double click. The strange thing is that even if I double click somewhere else, it's the selected app that is launched.
It's exactly the same for the virtual keyboard. One click select the key, two clicks (anywhere) press the key.
If I swipe one finger left, the icon to the left is selected (and vis-versa).
What the ****? Is this a secret features I have somehow activated?
Is there any simple way to go back to the good-ol' multitouch interface?
I have tried to shut down and reboot the ipad (home-click+power 5sec). Nothing works.
    Any ideas?
    Cheers
    Pire

You must have turned on voiceover. Either triple click the home button and see if that fixes it OR go to Settings -> General -> Accessibility -> VoiceOver and turn it off.

  • Desktop items rearranged after download!

Strange thing is happening to my desktop! When I download items to the desktop, other items there get rearranged and messed up. They're not in the order I had them prior to downloading. What is going on?

    Hi Makiko!
Positioning Desktop icons, too close to the edge of the screen, will cause them to reposition themselves on restart, or when adding more items.
Positioning them too close to each other, will cause this as well.
Depending on how many you have displayed, and the size of your screen, the Size of the icons, as well as the Text size & Label position can also factor in. Experiment with these settings.
My Desktop icons do not reposition themselves, and this is how I have my Desktop View Options set.
    Icon size: 32 x 32
    Text size: 12 pt
    Label position: Bottom
I have none of the following options selected.
    Snap to grid
    Show item info
    Show icon preview
    Keep arranged by
A different configuration may work for you. Experiment with the options until you find something suitable.
Click on an open area of your Desktop.
From the Finder's Toolbar, position your cursor over "View" and pull down to "Show View Options", and click. Or use the Command + J keys.

  • Xfce desktop items rearrange themselves between reboots

Hello, I am a new Arch Linux user and this is my first thread. Please pardon any possible mistakes I made on this post.
Almost every time Xfce starts the desktop icons are rearranged. After searching the wiki, I found this:
    https://wiki.archlinux.org/index.php/Xf … themselves
So after deleting the said files, I restarted Xfce. The problem was not gone.
Then I noticed that it was more complicated: I think it's not the desktop item positions that are changing, but the desktop's margins.
Not all icons are rearranged; only those on the right and the bottom sides of the desktop, the last collumns and rows.
In /home/user/.config/xfce4/desktop/icons.screen0-1350x728.rc these files' positions change back to row=0 col=0 and cannot be placed back to their original location.
The next time I restart Xfce the inaccesible spaces on the desktop are ok once again, and I place the items there. Then the problem repeats itself.
Is there any configuration file I should have manually edited?
I'm using Xfce, xfwm with compositing enabled, and no conky or any other desktop decorations.

EDIT: This might be actually caused by removing USB flash drives while the computer is shut down. The mentioned file is not changed, ergo a mess is caused when it's read on startup. I can't confirm this, though.
EDIT #2: No, it happened again, and I had not removed any usb flash drives.

  • A selection of iChat Bugs

    Ahoy!
I've been having a selection of small problems with iChat 4.0 lately, none of which are too problematic but they are all rather annoying nonetheless. If anyone has any ideas, then great!
First and most annoying: this has only began in the past couple of weeks, but when videochatting, the picture and sound cuts out for a few seconds at random intervals. The connection doesn't die, the window doesn't close etc. but it just freezes. and it does it a lot! If I keep an eye on connection doctor the bit rate doesn't drop or anything, just the video and audio quality bars drop down to zero for the couple of seconds the picture is frozen. As I said, it happens at random intervals, sometimes it's the person i'm chatting to that freezes, sometimes it's me that freezes for them, sometimes it's both at the same time! It was working fine for me prior to a couple of weeks ago. Nothing is Beachballing when it happens.
Secondly: I can't screen share (or video chat) with one specific person, only when using my Mac Pro. it's a strange phenomena because it worked the first time we tried it, it still works with other people, it works from my old PowerBook on the same internet connection (except the Mac Pro is connected to my router via ethernet) and they can successfully screen share with other people too (including my PowerBook!). Any ideas why iChat is singling this one person out?
Lastly, this is completely trivial but iChat theater has also started behaving erratically since the first problem problem arose too- when I share an image or movie via iChat theater, it usually displays both the picture I am sending and the person I am chatting with in the theater style (and for the other end they get the picture I am showing and still get a stream of me), but instead of it doing that now it just decides to put whatever I'm showing into my video box so they cant see me. It behaved normally again yesterday but continued to misbehave again today.
Details: I am using a four-week-old Mac Pro, connected to the router via ethernet, running Mac OS X 10.5.1. The Mac Pro's IP is set to be a DMZ on the router. My internet connection is my weak point as it is only 1 megabit down and a meagre 256k up, but that hasn't been a problem up until about two weeks ago. I am in London.
The person I talk to most on video chat (who I experience the freezing problem with the most) is using a MacBook Pro running 10.5.1 on an unspecified New York cable connection- we don't know how fast it is but we do know it's a lottt faster than mine.
The person I have the screen sharing problem with is using a PowerMac G4 MDD running 10.5.1 on a respectable internet connection that I believe to be 2 megabits up and down. They are in the Midlands of England.
I have also experienced the video freezing problem with someone on a iMac G5 running 10.3.9 (i think that was the last panther release at least!) with a similar internet connection to mine. They are a few miles from me in London.
I have tried fiddling with the settings that made video chatting more reliable for me on tiger (changing the bandwidth limit in iChat Preferences, changing the connection speed in System Prefs > Quicktime > Sharing) and have since put it back to what was working for me before these issues arose (No limit in iChat, setting QT streaming to 1 megabit as that's what I have going down) and none of it has really made a difference to how it behaves.
I haven't knowingly installed anything new when these problems surfaced, though I did install some more RAM about a week after the problems began.
So there's a challenge for whoever wants something to puzzle over! If anyone can work out why I'm facing such mysterious behaviour, then points are on offer. Or something.
    Thanks!
    -Ricky

It's time for a bump. My problems haven't subsided since upgrading to 10.5.2.
The freezing problem still exists and I have realised it is with anyone I talk to, so I'm putting this one down to my pony internet connection (though it didn't do it on tiger!). Defcom: thanks for the offer of trying to solve this through a videochat but I shall politely decline- I have a hard enough time talking to people I don't know on the phone, let alone on video chats. :[
The iChat theater problem is the least annoying of them all and I simply don't care about that one any more.
The problem with my computer singling out this one particular person is bugging me like crazy now though- it's not just screen sharing with him, I can't do anything beside text chat (or sometimes direct instant messaging if my computer is feeling like playing nice). I can't do screen sharing either way, no videochat, be it one way or two way with this one particular person on this one machine, though I can on my other machine on the same internet connection. I have been through and meticulously checked for settings that might be different between my PowerBook and this Mac Pro and nothing is different in any of the networking/sharing/QuickTime system preferences or iChat preferences.
Is it worth me filing it as a bug report through feedback with Apple, as it's such a specialised problem (only one person on one computer)?

  • [SOLVED] Cinnamon Desktop Selection

Hi, I'm running Archlinux with the cinnamon desktop, does anyone know how to achieve the desktop dragging? (Dragging a selection box on the desktop)
I know it's possible as I've seen Manjaro do it, and Manjaro is based off of Archlinux. I'm going to assume it is a package, or maybe a config file. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks!

Thank you, I have used openbox for about four years now, so I never played with gnome that much, but the recent xorg update broke openbox's logout, so I switched to cinnamon. Overall happy with it, now that I have control over my desktop. Thanks again!

  • [Desktop] Select and organize multiple playlists

This is a direct copy of this idea which was originally posted 2 years ago.  I wasn't a user then, and this idea has since been made inactive, so I'm resurrecting it.  Even just a shift-select on the desktop app would help immeasurably.  Here's the original idea:
"I am looking for easy ways to organize my library.
I want to do some housekeeping in my library, but I find the current system of dragging and dropping individual playlists is too time consuming when the number of playlists reach this high.
First of all, there should be a way to select multiple playlists at once and be able to handle multiple playlists the same way as I can handle single playlist (ability to drag and drop, and rightclick w/ a special dropdown menu for multiple selected items).
    Ctrl-clicking, shift-clicking and shift+arrowkeys would help greatly.
[Edit] This idea is nearing its 2 year anniversary of no official recognition. Good times! :)
As a sidenote my Spotify library now consists of 1296 playlists."

Thanks @martskre !   Your idea is solid and seemingly easy enough to implement, I have no idea why it's taken 3 years.  As loyal Spotify premium users build their libraries over time, we increasingly need streamlined ways to manage these libraries.  Selecting multiple playlists to move/copy/delete is the most simple of these.   would it be possible to get a rough roadmap or any info as to why this is being held up?  Thanks so much for your help!

  • Photoshop CS3 Selecting top layer bug

    Hi,
I think I've just found a bug in Photoshop CS3 for Mac.
When trying to select the first layer in the layers palette the selection hangs for several seconds before becoming responsive. This only happens when selecting the first layer in the layers pallette.
I'm using a MBP i5 running Snow Leopard.
I was able to reproduce this anomaly on a college's machine who is also on a MBP, running Snow Leopard but has a Core 2 Duo chip.

Sorry, I was wrong about 10.0.2.
Of couse Adobe should fix a bug such as this, especially since it's so prominent and clearly an update created the issue.
So far you assume that the update is the culprit.
I can’t reproduce the problem with Photoshop 10.0.1 on OSX 10.6.4 so it may yet be specific to the stations you have tried it on.
Adobe will hardly spend resources on an obsolete piece of software – so you should either go through the usual trouble-shooting-routines (including System maintenance and fonts validation) to see if you can amend the issue yourself or get used to it – or hope someone else can help you in some way.
But if you expect an upgrade for CS3 you will probably get disappointed.
