Desktop Sharing with VNC - hiding local desktop

Is there a way that I can lock the local screen when I remote connect to my mac via VNC? This would be key for me so that passersby aren't able to see my desktop when I'm physically away from my machine.

what about using a Vine server? that works.
The Vine Server trick will work. But it is still a trick. This is really a security issue which Apple should address. They are being compared against Microsoft's RDC, and the reality is that Microsoft as done the right thing in this case (and I hate saying that).
I think I may have picked up that method in one of your posts.
Very good chance
of course, that is not a built in solution.
That is really why I'm suggesting the OP give feedback to Apple. The more request for this as a built-in Screen Sharing feature.

  • Support for Desktop Sharing with Jabber Windows and without CSF

    Hi,
is there a official Cisco say, that Desktop Sharing with Jabber is only supported with the Desktop Softphone mode (CSF-Device)?
Somebody has a link? Or is it supported with the normal deskphone? Which version of jabber and CUP&IM?

    Hi
I can confirm that Cisco Jabber 10.5 supports desktop sharing with both CSF and Desktop mode. It also supports Conference desktop sharing, and desktop sharing through regular chat (No active call)
We are running CUCM 9.1 and IM/Presence 9.1, so  our platform is not the newest.
You will need the new media driver as well, Cisco Media Services Interface 4.1.2.8049.

  • Lion Screen Sharing with Full Screen apps on Remote Lion

Has anyone figured out how to EASILY work with multiple desktops and full screen apps on the remote mac when Screen Sharing with one Lion mac from another?  All of the standard methods of switching between desktops and full screen apps (swipe, cmd + <arrow>, etc) all take place on the the local Mac, and not the remote one.
The only real effective methods I have found so far are using the dock (not elegant with full screen apps), and removing an app from full screen.  Either way, these methods are clumsy and do not compliment the new features that Lion provides.

You're not going to believe this.
Problem was on my buddy's end.  The  slash key "/" was stuck down on her keyboard.
Sometimes the solution is so far out of normal troubleshooting, you're luck if you ever find it...

  • HT202213 Trying to activate home sharing with new iTunes update, says error #5506, any ideas?  Worked great before this update!

I'm trying to use home sharing with the latest iTunes update.  Keep getting error message 5506-any idea how to resolve this error and share at home?

Well, I tried a few other things and one worked but again just the first time I tried connecting to the desktop PC with iTunes. I flashed my router with the latest update and the ATV2 could see the iTunes library and I was able to play media. Later in the day I was going to show off to my daughter that I had fixed it and, to my dismay, no go. I tried opening the suggested ports but no luck.
I then tried loading iTunes on a Win7 laptop and it works perfectly with the ATV2. Both the laptop and the ATV2 are connected to the router wirelessly while the Desktop is connected to the router by Ethernet. Not sure if this is part of the issue as it sounds like this didn't work for others. The only other difference between the laptop and desktop is that the desktop has Win7 SP1 loaded while the laptop does not; now I'm scarred to load it though I don't think that's the issue. All in all, a very vexing situation. Hopefully Apple comes up with a solution soon.

  • In finder, it says that I am shared to a pc which I didn't know about nor do i know the pc, how do I stop sharing with it?

In finder, it says that I am shared to a pc which I didn't know about nor do i know the pc, how do I stop sharing with it?

I gather that you are seeing other "pee-seas" (and | other hosts) in MAC OSX Finder UI under SHARED ? T/F ??  The Finder is reflecting what others are sharing.
In any case consider these items:
    1) Other hosts on your network (local) have ITEMS (folders and structures) that they themselves are sharing
with anyone on there network and to others outside who will access them via a specic host nae or address. KInda like your mate who has some files he wants to share with you. You connect to his host (machine) either by a host name (yourmate.com), an IP address (33.33.33.11) or on your local area network usually over Bonjour (yourmates_macbookair.local).
Simply THEY ARE sharing their stuff with you and this your MACs FINDER makes then apear under the SHARED parion of the side bar in the UI. This is likely what you are seeing
microsoft platforms have their users share DIRECTORIES mainly through the SHARING properties for that opject. YEp.. and then you can at a minimum SEE it . HOwever this doesnt mean you can access the contents.... This is all familiar to most.. nothing to be concerned about.
    Probably no need for concern.....
(IMO), its amazing the number of PC users that unknowingly expose their folder contents on a hotel WIFI or ETHERNET network... its astonishing....!
    2) YOUR CONCERN that you are sharing your stuff:
I'll hazard a guess that form you minmal description that you may feel that others on your network can SEE YOUR STUFF?? Bt Default, any user can see ANYTHING you have put in your ~/Public folder (theis is your Public folder in your home directory. Usually they can ONLY read whats there unless you have gone out of your way to change the ACCESS CONTROL LIST (ACL) to an access for others other than READ ONLY.
An extention so to speak of this sharing is the concept of a "DROP BOX" that is also maintained by default in your homes public folder (~/Public/Drop Box). This is very useful for people to GIVE you their files by DROPPING then into this ~/Public/Drop Box folder.
So THIS folder is exposed for all to see on your local network.
How to stop anyone seeing anything?.. easy..
Step 1: go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES/Sharing/ and UNTICK the  "File Sharing" service. Its probably already unticked. This will stop exposing anything that you have shared to others. pee-sea users may need your to enable SMB/CIFS TO READ YOUR STUFF. YOU WONT HAVE THIS ENABLED UNLESS YOU DID IT YOURSELF. Additionally there are windows .apps to read mac file systems too... so stopping all fie sharing will do the trick
Step 1.1: if you dont want others to see your ~/Public folder either then simply select the Public folder in your finder, open the Finder inspector (+i), open the disclosure triangle for "sharing and permissions" and then set the access by others to "NO ACCESS"
Step 2: while you are in SYSTEM PREFERENCES/Sharing/ and UNTICK the  "Remote Login" and "Screen Sharing" services. Its very likely already unticked. This will stop exposing remote services such as ssh and vnc anything that you have shared to others.
Step 3: for extra go to SYSTEM PREFERENCES/Security/Firewall and enable any setting for network here that you want to disable or filter... seek out these apple discussion forums.. tonnes of stuff here on his.
Others reading this thread will also have good advice and opinions.

  • Remove little window "my computer" screen when screen sharing with iChat?

Anyone know if it is possible to remove or minimize the little window when screen sharing with iChat? if you try to drag it off the screen, it just pops back. It does not seem possible to close it without getting booted out of the screen sharing.

As the "little Screen" is either your Desktop or the other Desktop depending which you have as the current one you are working in it seems silly to have no access to changing back and forth.
But as you say or rather imply it does sometimes occupy the space you want someone at the other end to see and you can not access that part of the screen or if the other end is trying to show you something it can be hidden my your own desktop.
AT present Not Even Chax does what you want.

  • Install Mac OS using Screen Sharing or VNC - is it possible?

I've always wondered how to do this: Is it possible to remote install a Mac OS (in this case Leopard and up) using screen sharing or a vnc connection, when once the remote machine restarts and boots from the installation volume, you know longer have those sharing capabilities?
Essentially I want to know how do you control a remote mac installation without having the ability to activate screen or vnc sharing options?
In our office setting, what I'd like to be able to do is make an image of our installation disc and save it on our server, an remotely install it on other computers in the office.

how would a remote machine be controlled without screen sharing or vnc control if it's booting from a disc or networked volume?
The normal way to mass deploy an upgrade across many macs on a local network is to setup snow leopard server then you create an install image using a copy of a snow leopard disk. You can fully customise the install image with all your 3rd party applications etc. Then you just netboot each mac and the installation is automated.
see Create a Leopard to Snow Leopard Upgrade NetInstall Image
You would setup the server first. then you would have to setup dns correctly, then your users and groups. your sharpoints. Then when you build your image you customise it to suit your new network settings.

  • Problem Screen Sharing with my grandma.

I am having trouble screen sharing with my grandmother's computer. I have a brand new Mac Book Pro 15-inch, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB of memory with Mac OS X 10.5.1 . I bought my computer and my grandmother's back in October right after Leopard was released. She has a brand new iMac 20-inch, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo processor, 2 GB of memory with Mac OS X Leopard 10.5 .
We have been talking over video/audio chats using AIM for quite some time now with no problems other then an occasional internet problem (audio or video skips for a second or audio/video quality is bad for a few seconds). She is used to Windows so I have had to show/explain the basics of a Mac and every time she has a problem with something I try to help her by walking her through it, but it would be really nice if I could just do it myself through Screen Sharing. We have tried to share her screen but it comes up with and error message every time.
I have looked at the things that people are saying about how to fix your problem with screen sharing and I have tried most of them but they don't seem to be working. Maybe I am just missing something.
Please help me get this to work.

As you say there is nothing Specific in the Info about Fair Usage.
However the things you can not do are not so specific and could be stretched to cover what you want to do.
However it would depend on how actively they searched the data traffic for the things that might be interpreted as P2P file sharing and the from it takes.
As you can Video to some and Not Screen Share to others it sounds more like a NAT issue with (or possibly ports for Sharing Screens at your Grandma's) between you and your Buddy. ANd I think it is unlikely to be your ISP.
The Screen sharing part of iChat does not use the listed A/V or login ports.
It is supposed to use the Apple Remote Desktop ports that it is based on. However I have used Little Snitch which has pointed to many other Ports almost at random.
Try changing the Login port at both your End and your Grandma's
(iChat > Preferences > Accounts > Server settings tab - change the port from 5190 to 443) You can only do this whilst logged out of the AIM servers.

  • Printer sharing with Windows 7 64 bit

I am trying to install an HP laserjet 1320 printer connected to a Windows XP Pro 32 bit machine.  Windows 7 goes out and tries to find the approriate drivers but reports that a suiable driver could not be found.  The printer installs fine when connected to the Windows 7 machine via USB port.  Downloaded and unzipeed the Universal print driver HP's site says is the correct driver - no luck.  Tried installing using the share name - same error message.

I found that I had issues with getting all of these to work - individually.  I have an XPPro (32) pc trying to print to Win7Ultimate printer - printer is shared with all settings wide open, works great with another 7 or Vista machine, but same errors
as above for XP.  I got it to work an old way, and then the "local port" way worked.  I don't really know why as yet, but I am investigating.
    My Solution -
    1. As stated in other posts, install the printer locally on the XP machine.  Make sure that it prints.
2. Connect the printer to the 7 machine, print a test, then change the file and print sharing options to "yes".  I also installed the "Universal Driver" for my printer - HP1200 Laserjet.
    3. Make sure that the Network type that the 7 machine sees is "Work" or "Home", not "Public". -  I don't know if this really  did anything or not, but I did make the change - mine thought the network was "Public".
    4. Go back to the XP machine, if you get errors when you add the "Local Port" as suggested, then do this -
    Warning Old Dos Trick -
         -  Open a Command Prompt, then type (without quotes) "net use Lpt1 \\COMPUTERNAME\PRINTERSHARE " - where "computername" is the name of the computer and sharename is the shared name of the printer
    on that computer.
        - you SHOULD see "command completed successfully", if not check to make sure that you have rights on the 7 machine.  Now you should be able to print a test page to the printer. CAUTION - it took awhile for the changes to
take, so you may have the hourglass looking at you for a few minutes. - Once you reboot this will not work as the connection is just for that session.
To explain: this command is the dos version of what happens when you re-route output to a different destination - thus any traffic to LPT1 goes to \\computername\sharename.
    5. After this worked, I then could add the "local port", as detailed earlier and had no errors.
    Hope this helps someone else!

  • Wireless printer sharing with windows 7 and vista operating systems.

    hello can anyone help me?
i have a new HP pc with windows 7 OS, and have an epson PX710W 3in1 printer.
i want to connect a laptop with vista OS to share the printer (wireless set up).
the pc will print documents ok via wireless link, but when i power up the laptop it appears to inhibit the printing function (document will not print).
i have set up file/ print sharing but there is the problem. it appears to me that sharing is only possible between pc,s etc with windows 7 OS via the homegroup set up. Has  anyone encountered this problem at all, has anyone any ideas? or is it a configuration problem that i'm not aware of?

I found that I had issues with getting all of these to work - individually.  I have an XPPro (32) pc trying to print to Win7Ultimate printer - printer is shared with all settings wide open, works great with another 7 or Vista machine, but same errors

  • File sharing with accounts

I currently have my TC configured for file sharing with a disk password. Lately, however, I find that I have a need to be able to restrict read/write access to certain folders and files based on the user. But, when I select File Sharing "With Accounts" from the drop down I get a warning message stating "Setting up user accounts will make any files already on AirPort disks inaccessible." Seems like a pretty vague warning considering the possible outcome!
Does this mean I will lose access to all existing files already on the TC disk permanently, or just until I configure the accounts with access?
    Thanks for any insight.
    - Don

Is the file sharing the same between the TC and the AirPort Extreme 802.11n (Gigabit Ethernet) with a USB2 connected disk?
My experience is that the network share of the shared disk is different, but no files get lost. One can move between the security mechanisms without losing data. YMMV.
Here are my findings in detail: I was using the shared disk "With a Disk Password". When connecting from a Mac, a single share called like the partition of the disk would automatically mount. On that disk I put some folders "Music" and "Videos" directly in the root of the mounted share. The same volume also had a backup copy of my Mac mini, that I did when it was still locally connected (USB2 directly to the mini) rather than via Disk sharing. From that time there is still a "Users" folders there. One important folder is called "Shared". All folders and their files are accessible.
    "Volumename" (share)
    - Music
    - Photos
    - Videos
    - Shared
    - Users
When I changed from "With a disk password" to "With accounts", I also get the warning about "...will make any files already on AirPort disks inaccessible".
After the change, I have no access to "Music", "Photos" or "Videos" anymore.
However, there is still the share called "Volumename", but now it points to the sub folder "Shared" !!!!
When connecting from either Windows or Mac I see two shares. One called "Volumename" and the other matching the user name. I think the user share actually points to /users/username.
When switching back to "With a disk password", all is like it was before - no files are lost, the "Music", "Photos" and "Videos" folders stay there, and so does all their content.
I will now try to move them into the "Shared" folder, so that the share content after switching to Secure Shared Disk "With Accounts" will look the same as the content looked until now.

Seeing how itunes store is not international, cause every locale has to comply with different set of laws - you probably can't use family sharing feature, but you can use photosharing.
