Desktop Shortcut to Safari page

Folks,
I hope I'm not over reaching myself here, but this is what I want to do....
I wish to place a particular picture on the desktop which my daughter can click to take her straight to her favourite web page in Safari.
I have easily managed to get a "Safari icon" to do this, but would like a nice bright picture that she can recognise (the flag of the website would do)
I'm not really able to write little programmes (well not without step by step instructions in words of 1 syllable or less anyway)
I suspect it is simple if you only know how... But I don't.
Any help gratefully received.
Thanks,
David.

Hi there...
My apologies for not offering a reply to you here --- it's more of a question, in the same vein as yours.
I have an elderly aunt, who has just switched from pc to mac, and uses it only for email and internet. She's finding the transition a little confusing, and I'd like to make access to her AOL mail page as simple as possible. Can I create a shortcut and/or alias on the desktop, which will lead directly to her AOL mail?
(basically launching Safari to her AOL homepage, via a desktop icon that is an AOL graphic...)
Ideally, the icon would look like an AOL graphic, but I'm not sure how I would do that either...
Any suggestions out there?
Thank you!

  • Desktop shortcuts open home page

I recently installed Safari on my Vista PC. It works fine except...
    1. Any exiting Internet shortcuts on the desktop open my home page.
    2. Bookmarks created in Safari work when in safari but when dragged to the desktop open my home page.
    3. When using the "open with" option and selecting IE, the desktop shortcut created by Safari opens the correct url, but when Safari is selected, it opens my home page.
Is this by design or do I have a configuration issue??

Glad to hear it. Every once in a while scan again. Say once a month or so.
As you saw from the reports, one scanner picked up where another did
not. So use two or three scanners. Happy Computing.

  • Desktop shortcuts to web pages don't have the correct icon, can this be corrected?

I just upgraded from IE to Firefox and it's really working well. The only problem is all the shortcuts to websites on my desktop have the Firefox icon. They had their correct icons under IE how can I get the correct icons back? My computer is running Windows XP

If you're using Internet Explorer as your default browser, you can create a shortcut via drag & drop and it will take on the web site's favicon if there is one. FireFox just gives it the default icon for the browser.
It's certainly not a deal breaker (this is one of the VERY few things that's better on IE) but it would be helpful if FF's drag & drop shortcuts could also take on the site's favico automatically.
This add-on https://addons.mozilla.org/firefox/addon/9548 or cor-el's solution are ok for those whose shortcuts are more static in nature. However, I often drag a shortcut to the desktop for a site that I'll visit later on (because my bookmarks are a mess LOL), but will eventually delete the shortcut after visiting the site again, usually within several days. In my case, it's not worth the extra effort to manually save and assign the favicon for each shortcut, so it would be nice if this could happen automatically like it does with IE.

  • IE Desktop Shortcuts very slow to open web page

    Hello,
I wanted to see if someone could help me solve a problem. I have a user at work I'm trying to help solve a slowness issue. He is using IE 9 on Windows 7, and visiting both Yahoo and Goggle Finance pages. What he does is save a shortcut to those pages on
his desktop. He has recently complained that when he clicks on either of the shortcuts, the page takes about 2 minutes to fully open. I confirmed that is the case.
If I open IE to his home page, then type the site manually, it opens very fast. I saved that page to the Favorites list, and that opens fast when accessed. I re-created the desktop shortcuts, but that does not fix the problem. Only the shortcuts to the web
    are slow.
We are on a domain, and the My Documents folder is being redirected to a file server, but not the Desktop. I considered that desktop shortcuts might be directed through a different path, but I don't see where.
When asked the "what changed" question, he says nothing. But I'm pretty sure he upgraded Java when prompted, as it is not coming up. Not sure if Java would make IE shortcuts run slow.
Any help or guidance is appreciated.

    Hi,
I suggest you test the issue with no add-on first.
    Check Internet Explorer Add-Ons
    =========================
    1. Click Tools, and then click Internet Options.
    2. Click the "Programs" tab, and then click Manage Add-ons.
    3. Select an add-on in the Name list, and then click Disable.
    4. Restart IE with Add-ons and check the issue again.

  • Desktop screen hides safari web pages. How correct this?

I made the mistake of fiddling with display resolution. After I did, my desktop screen hides Safari web pages and most of the address bar.
In addition when using Safari and now Foxfire (which is not hidden) there is a border on the screen (fainter color than the rest of screen) which results in cursor hitting the border too often making the web page disappear. Apple Support, for which I paid, could not figure out how to fix this. Why would the border
    have developed.

Do you mean running Firefox in full screen mode?
If you are in full screen mode then you can hover the mouse to the top to make the Navigation Toolbar and Tab bar appear.<br />
You can click the Maximize button at the top right to leave full screen mode or right click empty space on a toolbar and use "Exit Full Screen Mode" or press F11.
You can also run Firefox in a maximized window to have easier access to the Menu bar and Navigation Toolbar.

  • How do I keep more than one safari page open at the same time?

New to Mac.  I'm used to being able to have several applications open at the same time, and able to check emails, eBay, camera for downloading photos, etc., but when trying this on Mac, I can't seem to figure out how to swing from email to something else....oh, it opens up eBay and other pages, but not where I left it...I have to keep starting from the beginning...name, password, etc.   I can't have 3, 4 or 5 safari pages open at the same time??  This is making my life cumbersome, and running back to the basement office and using my dying Dell desktop where life was a bit simpler.  Sometimes I need to copy a few paragraphs on one website into another....and its taking me way too long to get this done.  I know there's a way of doing this on Mac....

    Hi Suzkas,
I was new to mac a short time ago and I had frustrations in the learning curve especially as I was so used to working with PC.
If you look at the top left of the screen you will see the words SAFARI next to the apple logo. if not then either open safari or click on the window and the mac will then show safari at the top. If you now click on FILE you can select NEW WINDOW or NEW TAB as you wish. I often use new tab and switch between them. If you go to VIEW and select CUSTOMISE TOOLBAR you can drag an icon to the top of the safari window and you won't have to keep going to the menu to add a new tab. I will sometimes select new window to keep something separate from my other work.
If you close down a window you will often lose your place, but using the tab system you will leave the window active unless you select the cross to terminate. If you have a separate window open you can select the orange blob (between the red and green at the top) and the window will slide down to the dock and stay there, active, for you to return and continue.
Hope this help, stay with it, go see the instore staff and pretty soon you wont look back
PS I have PARALLELLS6 running with a copy of windows 7 on my mac. This means that I can switch to microsoft if I want to. However, with office for mac installed I rarely need to now, the only time I ever open windows is for an application that has no mac version.

  • Desktop shortcuts will no longer open firefox after a "shockwave" player software update

I can go to my email and click on links to web pages that open firefox, but not the desktop shortcuts. This happened after being prompted to install this software while trying to view a video on facebook.

A couple of quick things to try. Have you re-started your computer?
Have you tried on the desktop shortcuts - right click>open?
And a couple of questions. Is Firefox working properly via the URL Bar and the Search Bar?
    Do bookmarks open normally?

  • Can't create a desktop shortcut for a website in Firefox Tor Browser

I am a Tor Browser user, and I really like the Firefox interface. According to my about page, my Firefox browser is up to date. But For some reason I cannot save desktop shortcuts for a website. Every time I drag the icon next to a website (variously a glob, a green lock, and other icons), I get a denial mouse icon anywhere I try to put the web shortcut on the desktop. This even happens when I drag bookmarks from my bookmark bar! My guess is that something is blocked in the Tor settings that won't allow shortcuts. Any suggestions on where the shortcuts settings are in Firefox?

I don't know that program. Go to its Mozilla Add-ons web page and find the support link. Then ask them about this. It may be a bug.
Do the other add-ons I sent you work okay? Then you should be about done, until you hear from the Tor support people.
Once you get an answer, please post it here. Good Luck, Happy Holidays !

  • Every time I click on a desktop shortcut, I get an error dialog in FF 4.

Every time I click on a desktop shortcut, I get a Windows (XP) error dialog in FF 4. I click OK, and the browser then opens to the shortcut page.
When no browser window/tab is open, this happens EVERY time.
However, if the browser is open, it will open another tab, WITHOUT the error dialog.

Your above posted system details list shows two Flash plugins, one a very old Flash 9 version that you should uninstall.
    # Shockwave Flash 11.6 r602
    # Shockwave Flash 9.0 r45
You can set the plugin.expose_full_path pref to true on the about:config page to see the full path of enabled installed plugins on the about:plugins page.
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/about:plugins
    *http://kb.mozillazine.org/about:config
It is best not to leave that pref set to true as it exposes that full path to web servers via the navigator.plugins object, so reset that pref to false after you are done with the about:plugins page.

  • ITunes mini player on top of a full screen Safari page

When you make a full screen Safari page, is there any way to put the iTunes mini player go on top of this page? I did this once by accident, but now whenever I try to open iTunes while in full screen Safari, the iTunes mini player opens to the main desktop page.

    Thanks for the reply.
I'm listening to an audio podcast that's reffering to images on his sight. When you go full screen it shows the images best, but you lose the ability (space bar) to pause/play the podcast audio. It would be nice to be able to view and study the images a bit longer, but not having to keep futsing around with everything.
Is there a way to get the Mini player in the same Space as Safari?

  • Rename a desktop shortcut on the iPad 4?

Is it possible to rename a desktop shortcut on the iPad 4 with iOS 8.1.1?

For Safari shortcuts you will need to go to the website in Safari and create a new home screen shortcut for it, you can't rename existing shortcuts on a homescreen

  • Why did FF desktop shortcut icons change over to IE icons?

I am running Windows XP. For weeks i have looked for a solution with no luck. I use Firefox and occasionally drag and drop shortcuts to web pages that i want to revisit at a later time. For some reason, the shortcuts no longer carry the Firefox symbol. They all changed to Internet Explorer symbol and also open with Internet Explorer now. Even when browsing with Firefox now, i will drag a shortcut and as soon as i drop it, it changes to IE. Do you have any idea why this happened all of a sudden? Thanks

You can check for issues with the Windows icon cache and try to rebuild the icon cache.
    # Open the Task Manager (Shift+Ctrl+ESC)
    # In the Process tab, right-click on the Explorer.exe process and select End Process.
    # Open the file picker via "File > New Task (Run)" and click the Browse button.
    # Type or Paste %USERPROFILE%\AppData\Local (%LocalAppData%) in the File name field (AppData is a hidden folder).
    # Select the IconCache.db file and use "Delete" in the right-click context menu to delete the file.
    # After the IconCache.db file has been deleted, start a new explorer.exe process via "File > New Task" to get the desktop and Taskbar back.
The IconCache.db file is a hidden file, so make sure that you can see hidden files.

Thank you cor-el. I have tried what you have suggested, and also tried re-naming another file in the same directory GDFONTCACHE1.DAT which I beleive has a similar function, but none of these combinations will produce an Internet shortcut icon.

  • Quick Launch and Desktop Shortcuts

Every time I upgrade Safari it installs new quick launch and desktop shortcuts - why?
Can this avoided... Obsolete ones stop working, new ones link to exactly the same place (often) and really Apple should be asking if we 'want' these short cuts in the first place... it a pain to keep deleting and swapping them about just because Apple decide to upgrade.
I have no other software that does this.
Does anyone have a work around?

The LabVIEW installer itself cannot create shortcuts on the desktop or remove older versions of itself. You can create an executable to create shortcuts and have your installer launch that executable. But for more complicated things like uninstalling previous versions, you might want to look into a third party installer like Wise or InstallShield.
LabVIEW 6.1 does not really have any installer features that 6.0 did not. 6.1 does use an MSI installer instead of the previously used Wise installer. Theoretically, one might be able to use a utility like Orca from Microsoft to customize the MSI installer, but editing MSI files will not be supported by National Instruments.

  • Desktop Shortcut in non-Default browser?

    Good Evening,
I have Google Chrome set as my default browser in Lion.  To access certain DOD websites I have to use Safari since it can access my PKI smartcard and chrome can't.  I'd like to create a few desktop shortcuts for these websites to open in Safari, not chrome.  I can drag the URL to the desktop and it creates the shortcut.  I right clicked on the icon and changed the "open with" to Safari but when I then double click the icon it still opens in the default browser, Chrome.
Any mac geniuses out there who know of a script or something to force those specific desktop shortcuts to open in Safari(not default browser) vs Chrome (default browser)?
    Thank you!

This isn't working for me for a URL I want to force open in Firefox (Chrome is my default).  Right-click "open with" works.  But, even after changing the "open with" in "get info" to Firefox, it opens in Chrome.
Changing ".webloc" to ".webbookmark" broke it entirely.  It does open in FF, but as an XML file that outputs this:
    <plist version="1.0"><dict><key>URL</key><string>[URL]</string></dict></plist>
    Any ideas?  Thanks.

  • How do I keep the website's icon when creating a desktop shortcut as opposed to the firefox logo?

When I click a website's icon in the address bar in Firefox and drag it to my desktop to create a shortcut to said site, the shortcut is created with Firefox's icon. I want to know how to keep the site specific icon when creating these shortcuts. I know that once the shortcut is created you can go into properties and choose from several generic icons but I don't want those cheesy icons. Can anyone help?

If you drag a link or favicon on the left end of the location bar onto the desktop to create an internet shortcut then that shortcut gets the icon of the default browser.<br />
If you want a different icon (favicon) then you have to assign that icon yourself to the desktop shortcut (right-click: Properties).<br />
You can usually get the favicon if you append "favicon.ico" to the main domain of a website (e.g. http://www.mozilla.com/favicon.ico ) to display the favicon in a tab and save that image to a folder or see if you can find it in "Tools > Page Info > Media".<br />
