Desktop Solaris 10

Hi,
I would like to use solaris 10 as a desktop system. But for this case it should be possible to shut down the system as a normal user.
For this case I should have the menue "Shut Down" in the Java Desktop System for all user.
I have searched a lot but I did not get an funktional solution, to get this menue to shut down the computer as a normal user.
Can someone help me? Thanks in advance.

I may have been lucky, as I experienced no problem whatsoever. When choosing " shutdown " while utilizing the gdm mask, the system goes through the usual sequence and thens shuts down my machine.
Same exact procedure as utilizing the CDE shutdown.
Suggest that you re-read the ENTIRE editing procedure in the link that you followed in the previous post. There is a reference to ' gdm2 ' as opposed to
' gdm ' depending on Solaris version that you are utilizing. This may (?) be a factor that you may have to deal with.
Good luck ....... John

  • Setting up a bridge for solaris 10

    Hi,
I currently have a dual boot for on my desktop (Solaris 10 and WinXP). I'm currently looking for a way to get online while in solaris, my WinXP install is on a wireless network but it's almost impossible to find wireless drivers for solaris so i'm trying to use my ethernet capabilities.
I bought a wireless print server which has a bridge feature and i'm hoping to find some information on how to setup a bridge on my solaris install.
Any help or direction will help me a lot since I'm very new to solaris. Thank you in advanced.

I have a similar issue but have not been able to get this solution to work.
I have an Airport Extreme 802.11n that is set up in bridge mode and connected to a DSL modem that assigns IP addresses.
I wish to use a remote Airport Express (late 2008) 802.11n to connect via ethernet to a PowerMac without wireless.
    In summary I desire: DSL-ethernet-AirportExtreme-wireless-AirportExpress-ethernet-PowerMac
I have reset the Airport Express to factory defaults and then set to "Join wireless network" and checked allow Ethernet clients. The Airport Express gets an IP address but any number of Macs I have tried will not get an IP address in DHCP mode (except a self-assigned one). I have verified that the cable works: when I connect the Macs to the Airport Extreme base station, they all get an IP address. All versions of firmware are 7.4.1. I have also tried checking and unchecking "Allow this network to be extended" on the Airport Extreme.
    Please help. Thanks

  • Installation of Solaris 10 fails on Desktop

    Hi All,
I just downloaded the DVD iso image for Solaris 10 for the intel desktop and tried installing.
On my first attempt it was complaining about insufficient size to load module, but I later realised that the installation was corrupt so I re-downloaded and
    verified chksum.
This time, the installation went through and went to the last stage where it rebooted, then I removed the DVD and it tried to boot from the Harddisk and comes up with the
boot screen having 2 options - Solaris 10 ........ & Solaris failsafe. I let the default option go through...
On that it fails with the following message:
    boot: cannot find /misc/amd64/krtld
    boot: error loading interpreter (misc/amd64/krtld)
    Elf64 read error.
panic: no entry point in kernel/amd64/unix
    Press any key to reboot
I'm not sure what went wrong, I just did the full installs + OEM and removed only the PostgreSQL as I didn't want that application.
Following are my system specs -
    Intel Q6600
    Gigabyte GA-X38-DQ6 - intel X38 board
    4GB (2x2GB) + 2GB(1x2GB) = 6GB of Corsair RAM
    Gigabyte nVidia 8800GTX Video card
    Asus DVD drive
    160GB harddrive
During the install I setup the HDD as
    / -40GB
    swap - 4GB
    /opt - 80GB
    /export/home - 20GB
    Would appreciate any help...

    Solved this issue....
I reinstalled and changed the following - not sure which fixed the issue -
The install which I did was Localised to Australia and had also applied Australian posix, I changed to English posix in new install.
I have a 160GB drive, on the disk screen Solaris install shows total disk size 156117M and assigned is 156118 which is 1M more than available.
Not sure how this happened, but it's the default screen which comes up on install, I change the values and then defined the drive structure before install.
    Works now.

  • No mouse on Solaris 10 with Parallels Desktop

    Hi,
I just got done installing Solaris 10 on my MacBook Pro through Parallels. Almost everything installed ok, but then I found out that my mouse wouldn't work on the login screen. I logged in via the keyboard, and my mouse still wouldn't work on the desktop. Does anyone have any ideas why this might be happening? A lot of people have had this problem, as I've seen in other forums, but no one has supplied an answer yet. I would really, really like to start using the OS I spent so long configuring.
Thanks in advance, to whomever helps me fix this.

By accident, I found out that the graphics settings are remembered apparently only if a plug-and-play monitor is present (that reports its properties to the graphics adapter).
Also, during installation, be sure to watch the screen at all times. The "kdmconfig" program is apparently run also during installation. There's a 4-second window (quite at the beginning of the installation) to view the graphics properties as detected by the installer. As soon as you see this screen, hit the SPACE key to stop the timer, then verify the settings if they match your monitor and graphics adapter type. If you have the manuals of these, it's easy to figure out if the settings are appropriate. Hit ESC to start kdmconfig, it'll go right into the XSun configuration (which is used ONLY by the installer with my version of Solaris 10). The installer automatically creates a XOrg configuration and switches to XOrg after reboot (if all went well).
After successful installation of Solaris 10 (when the graphical subsystem is working), you can run "xorgconfig" (in the X binary directory) to create a "xorg.conf" file that you can place in "/etc/X11/" directory. I'm not sure if the file is actually parsed, but you can edit it to change settings if necessary.
(BTW, it would be a good idea if "kdmconfig" would allow users to enter their own maximum/minimum/fixed horizontal and vertical frequencies, edit the mode table and set +/- hsync/vsync and interlace flags, and edit a monitor setting detected automatically. I was close to hair-pulling a couple of times. Also, the installer doesn't seem to save changes to the monitor setting.)

  • Multi-label desktops not starting (Solaris 10u9)

I'm attempting to create a multi-label trusted JDS desktop setup, where each workspace is tied to a specific label, which is in turn associated with a specific zone. I'm starting out simple and just creating one label and one non-global zone. I'm able to have the zone autoboot, use "smc" to associate the zone with the label, and set a workspace to that particular label. However, the desktop does not show up in that workspace. All I get is a background with the color that I've assigned to that particular label.
I can start nautilus manually from within the zone after setting DISPLAY to ":0.0", and the desktop will show up in the workspace. However the desktop running in the global zone seems to use the same configuration files as the non-global zone (i.e. if I change the background in one workspace, the other changes as well). I'm also unable to use "gnome-panel" to run any apps in the non-global zone from the Launch menu.
I'm using Solaris 10u9. Seems like there is something rudimentary and simple that I'm missing. I've been at this for way too long and it's driving me nuts. Thanks for the help!

Lastly, did you edit /etc/security/tsol/label_encodings and verified that the zones are up and running properly?Yes, I've modified the label_encodings file as follows:

  • Solaris 10 on Dell Desktop

    Hi,
I offered to install Solaris 10 x86 on a friends desktop so they could do a Sun JES trail. The system they gave me is a Dell Dimension 3000 which is a P4 3 GHz with 1 GB of memory - should be fine for their trial. However, OS doesn't seem to recognise the network adapter. I thinkthe NIC is an Intel Pro 10/100 but not sure even after 50 googles. I've downloaded the latest patches but not expecting much. Short of getting a PCI NIC, what are my options? Has anyone had success with this type of Dell desktop? I'm used to the Solaris SPARC side where everything just works!
    -Jason

    Jason,
Is MS WinXP still installed to that system?
If so, then use Google to find yourself a copy of a freeware program named <u>Everest Home</u>.
The publisher, Lavalys discontinued the free version in early December '05.
You cannot get it from them any longer but you should be able to find
a copy at any number of shareware web sites.
Additionally, you can troll many various x86 discussion forums for mention of Everest Home, and perhaps additional links to it.
Download the 4mb zipfile, unzip it to its own subdirectory, and run its executable. There isn't any program installation; it just runs and gathers system information.
It will tell you what's in the system.
Next, have you reviewed the Solaris HCL ?
There are a number of different Intel Ethernet chipsets that all seem to be grouped into the Pro 10/100 family and not all of them are recognized natively by Solaris 10. You may need to install 3rd party packages to the system.

  • Firefox 3.6.3 crashes randomly when used throught SUN Secure Global Desktop. I have a Solaris core dump. Is there a way to get the dump read?

Running FF 2.0.0.8 with Sun Secure Global Desktop - no issues. Upgraded to V3.6.2, then 3.6.3. Both upgrades failed. Browser randomly crashes at different times, different pages. FF works if directly ssh'ing into application sever. When accessing FF after loging in using SGD, I get random crashes. I have a Solaris core dump generated by FF. Is there anyone that can read/diagnos the core dump?

I have identified the issue and received a 'fix' from the
Oracle Secure Global Desktop support team.
The issue - firefox is crashing when attempting to talk to the sound server which is not active. All activity within the window works fine, except ff hangs the second you move the mouse in to the top level menu.
We disabled the audio under the SGD configuration and that ficed the issue.

  • Solaris 10 for desktop use?

    Hello.
I've got a Dell Inspiron 9400 (intel graphics card) laptop and I have a dual boot: Windows Vista in one partition and Debian Lenny on the other.
I'm seriously thinking about the possibily of uninstall Debian and install Solaris 10 and configure it for dual booting with Vista (GRUB).
I'm not a Solaris newbie since I work with Sun SPARC servers with various versions of Solaris running.
As a desktop environment It will be used for playing movies, listening music, record CD's & DVD's, web browsing, office work... among other things.
Do you recommend me a switch to Solaris for desktop or should I stick to Linux?

I've been impressed with the performance of Solaris on the desktop; I have a vanilla x64 that I've pieced together and everything works wonderfully except the sound. I've not taken the time to play with the sound yet, because it's not something that is important enough to me to care. If you can get video and audio and nic drivers for you system, then I'd give it a try.

  • Which Desktop to Buy for Solaris 8 ???

    Hi,
Recently I bought a Dell Dimension 4100 system and found out that Solaris 8 does not install on that because of some acpi problems.
Now I am returning the system and planning to buy another one.
Can somebody tell me which system to buy so that I am able to sucessfully install Solaris 8 on it.
I checked the Hardware Compatibality list but it either lists expensive servers or outdated desktops which the manufacturers no longer sell.
I am looking to buy a P3 atleast with 1GHz Clock Speed.
If somebody knows then please let me know.
    Thanks
    Anurag

I recommend you stay away from the 21.5" iMac and Mac mini because they cannot be upgraded. Upgrading the 27" iMac's memory when you need the extra RAM will be less expensive than maxing out the RAM now and less expensive than replacing the computer a couple years from now. The retina iMac is beautiful but in your work how many times have you felt your 2007 iMac lacked pixels? Maybe you'd benefit from it, maybe not. When it comes to the difference between displays I've always recommended people sit down in front of them and see. Looking at the specs, my wife's display looks like a winner. She loves using it, I hate it. Displays are a very personal choice.

  • Desktop not sharp after installing Solaris 10 8/07 on an Ultra 10

Hi. I just installed the latest version of Solaris 10 on an Ultra10 and noticed that the desktop is not sharp. It's almost as though everything (background, Launch button, windows, etc) is misty. Oddly, the drop down menu displayed with right-click on the desktop is clear and sharp. Likewise, the contents of the Desktop Background Preferences window is OK, but the desktop selections and title bar are misty. If I try to change the resolution, an error is displayed saying 'The XServer does not suport the XRandR extension'.
    Any ideas?
    Andre.

I used to have a similar issue when connecting my computer by DVI instead the classic way.
After applying several updates the issue was gone for Solaris 10, but is still there for SXDE.
I think it has something to do with video card driver.

  • Solaris 10 X86 and disabling the desktop start up?

I want to disable desktop start up and use command line interface? How do I can do this? My Solaris 10 x86 is installed on virtual PC and the desktop (or x) uses a lot of resources and I dont need it.

the only thing that worked for me was:
    svcadm disable svc:/application/graphical-login/cde-login:default
I had been using CDE last. The suggestion to /usr/dt/bin/dtlogin -d did not keep the graphical login from happening (that's suggested in the official online docs), and "dtlogin" is not recognized as a service by svcadm so that doesn't work either. Finally, very few services are started by /etc/*.d/ any more, of the remaining scripts in /etc/rc2.d S99dtlogin is not among them. So do the above with newer releases, mine is u3.
Incidentally, didn't "init -r" used to reveal the run level? Hmm... been a while since using Solaris but I still consider myself a Solaris person. So much is changing... hope it's finally faster and comes with a compiler. Really, it's that simple. Oh and getting over Linux to realize that Solaris is Solaris (in case that needs translation for Sun decision makers - that means Solaris is already better than Linux with the aforesaid improvements). Sorry, very off-topic but I won't post anything for another several years ;-)

    Hello,
    You can use kdmconfig.
Let me know if it solved your issue. I have the same problem with solaris 10 b72... JDS cannot be loaded, and I come back to the login screen. But no problem with CDE.

  • Problems with Solaris 10 Secure Desktop server and Windows XP Client

Solaris 10 Secure Desktop server - Windows XP Client - I've tried to open the Solaris Machine's desktop using the browser based http://MysolarisServerName/sdg and the windows native client
    http://MySolarisServerName/tarantella.
I log in ok to the Solaris Server.
I can open a VT420 session with the solaris machine, and this works OK, but whenever I try anything else e.g. smc, or full screen desktop it doesn't. I get various error messages e.g. can't open display, and Session Failed - X Session timeout.
I've also installed Cgywin X Server on the Win XP machine to see if this makes a difference, but it doesn't.
    Any clues anyone?

Being able to run the VT420 session, but not any X-Window sessions is the clue; it's an X-specific problem. Most likely, ssh isn't configured correctly, see: http://docs.sun.com/source/819-4309-10/en-us/base/indepth/ssh.html
Pasting in the (most) relevant bit:
    Adding support for X applications
To support X applications through OpenSSH, enable X11 forwarding in the OpenSSH configuration file. On each Secure Global Desktop host:
    1. Edit the sshd_config file and include the following:
    X11Forwarding yes
    2. Edit the ssh_config file and include the following:
    ForwardAgent yes
    ForwardX11 yes
    3. Restart the SSH daemon.
    Using SSH and X authorization
If SSH connections fail, when X authorization is enabled, you may have to run the SSH daemon in ipv4-only mode because Secure Global Desktop may not support the xsecurity extension used on your server. You enable ipv4-only mode by editing your system SSH configuration file. For example:
    * On SUSE Linux, edit the /etc/sysconfig/ssh file and add a SSHD_OPTS="-4" line.
    * On Red Hat Enterprise Linux, edit the /etc/sysconfig/sshd file and add a OPTIONS="-4" line.
Note If the SSH configuration file does not exist on your system, you can create it.
You must restart the SSH daemon after making this change.
