Desktop unresponsive

In the past several months the desktop on my G4 Power Mac becomes unresponsive from time to time. By I mean that I become aware that I cannot move an icon or folder on the desktop, a jpg will not open,I cannot highlight an item to move to trash with command/delete etc. When that happens, I restart and all is well. Today, this happened twice and it's worrisome. In the past I checked the computer with Tech Tool Pro and Apple's Disk Utility--no issues.
Any suggestions as to cause and fix?
Jude

BDAqua: Hello again. Installed and ran Applejack. Instead of applejack AUTO, I typed applejack auto restart. This very good utility ran thru its 5 items.
Task 1 disk repair: "either your disk had no errors or it was repaired successfully." Task 2: repair permissions showed a really long list of 'permissions differ' on systems library, itunes etc etc. I think it said: "Permissions Repaired: 0." The rest of the tasks went by so quickly that I had no time to check them out, and then the G4 restarted.
After that I reran Apple's Disk Utility and the list of 'permissions differ' was very much shorter than the last time I ran it. it may be that applejack did repair some.
In any case, it is impossible to know what causes that unresponsive desktop, and I cannot say if it will happen again since it was always unpredictable and it's quite likely I don't notice it right away. In any case, I like applejack as it seems easier to use than Apple's utility. Thanks for that.
As there were no disk problems, and I certainly have enough space available on my main hard drive, what can you suggest might be an area to pursue?
There are a number of other problems currently which I have not mentioned which I do not think are related, i.e., wrong computer date and possible problems with Time Machine and i will start a new post topic.

  • Windows 7 desktop unresponsive, must reboot several times.

I am having this issue on a number of machine in our environment where after a boot, the desktop becomes unresponsive.  I cannot open Windows Explorer, IE, control panel, nothing opens.  When I try to restart, the restart option from the Stat Menu
does not show up and I have to Shut Down.  I think the Server service is what's failing to start at boot but I can't even get in to view the running services.  The Event Log is also seeming to fail to start so there is not log of the errors taking
place.  This is very frustrating for my users who have to reboot several times before the computer will start working again.  Please help.

    Hi,
    So here we are in a domain environment? If yes, please verify if any group policy settings would casuing this problem;
Meanwhile, please boot in safe mode to see if this issue was caused by any 3rd party applications, also take a check to see if there is any conflicts between the devices and the drivers:
Start your computer in safe mode
    Hope this may help

  • Mavericks desktop unresponsive, missing icons

My Mavericks desktop has all of a sudden become unresponsive and all the icons are missing though I can see them in Finder. I can't drag any files to the desktop. Can't copy/paste. I can't even right click to bring up the context menu or even drag out a selection box. It's completely blank other than my wallpaper and won't do anything.
    I'm on 10.9.5.
I don't know if this is related but I recently made an Automator script I found online to show/hide invisible files because I needed it. This is the shell script that runs:
    is_shown=$(defaults read com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles)
    if [ $is_shown != "TRUE" ]
    then
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles TRUE
    else
    defaults write com.apple.finder AppleShowAllFiles FALSE
    fi
I did it once to show and once to hide. I did this yesterday but only noticed this issue today. I'm pretty sure it was working fine yesterday after this and this morning.
I have restarted my computer several times and it still doesn't work. I also found this other solution to run this in Terminal but it didn't work:
/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchSe rvices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user
    What can i do??

    Do a backup.
Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J.  When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder.  Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.finder.plist and com.apple.desktop.plist. Move the .plists to your desktop.
Restart and test. If it works okay, delete the plists from the desktop.
If the same, return the .plists to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

  • Macbook Pro Desktop Unresponsive

My macbook pro (late 2011 running Mountain Lion) desktop is unresponsive. I am unable to click on anything and the dock is missing. The desktop looks normal and all (minus the missing dock) but nothing is clickable. Im using the builtin track pad and the curser does move. I've restarted it to no avail by holding down the power button and shutting it down but upon restart same issue persists. I did a smc also to no avail. Please advise

I forgot to post info about your freezing issues - Try booting from your install disc & run Repair Disk from the utility menu. To use the Install Mac OS X disc, insert the disc, and restart your computer while holding down the C key as it starts up.
    Select your language.
Once on the desktop, select Utility in the menu bar.
    Select Disk Utility.
Select the disk or volume in the list of disks and volumes, and then click First Aid.
    Click Repair Disk.
    Restart your computer when done.
Repair permissions after you reach the desktop-http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=25751
If you are still having display problems run the Apple Hardware Test disc. Your other alternative would be to take your computer to an Apple Store. The staff will be able to check to determine if your model MacBook Pro is having hardware issues.

  • Desktop unresponsive at random intervals

Every now and then, the desktop will become unresponsive. I won't be able to select anything on it, nor can I make selections. Other Finder windows work fine, and I can use shortcuts to access them when this is happening - it is just the desktop. A quick relaunch of the Finder solves the problem, but it's annoying when it does it.
Any thoughts on how to stop this happening?

    Hello Matt:
Intermittent problems are frustrating to all of us.
Try trashing the preference file (com.apple.finder.plist) and restarting.

  • Fresh install, random 100% drive usage and system wide lag.

Hi there, i just fresh installed Win 8.1 after having the issue of a svchost thrashing 100% disk access for minutes at a time and lagging whole system inc mouse pointer to the point that apps and games start to crash and the issue has not gone away.
I had also had the issue on old pc using different drives.
This is the 4th system where ive seen this behaviour in Win 8 since launch and was wondering if there is a fix yet?  It happens on my 2 pc, my mothers laptop and a friends desktop, all with different hardware, 2 factory installs and 2x fresh installs
    from untouched iso's.
It happens randomly when nothing is running on pc or sometimes when gaming or using apps and makes the desktop unresponsive for minutes at a time and sometimes crashes apps with it due to the system wide lag.  Even ctrl alt deleting can take several
minutes for the menu to appear or even start Task Manager.
Ive managed to catch 1/2 the issue with procmon but due to taking so long for apps to launch while the lag happens i can only get the last 1/2 of the trace which shows a mix between a svchost, explorer.exe and wmiprvse.exe thrashing the system to a standstill
while accessing almost every file and reg key on the disk to over a million events recorded in procmon.
IS there a fix for this or a way to check the procmon trace to see exactly what service or task is causing the thrashing?  I think whatever it is is buggy/broken, running at realtime and is blocking anything else from using the system until its done,
    which lags the system.
Surely even an overloaded drive wouldnt cause other apps or the mouse to lag/hang so badly to the point of crashing and even Xp or Win 7 wouldnt lag/hang the desktop due to a busy drive.

    Gerg
In order to diagnose your problem you will need to download and install the below
Install the WPT (windows Performance Toolkit) http://social.technet.microsoft.com/wiki/contents/articles/4847.install-the-windows-performance-toolkit-wpt.aspx ,
When you have open an elevated command prompt and type the following
WPRUI.exe (which is the windows performance recorder) and check off the boxes for the following
First level triage, CPU usage, Disk IO.  If you problem is not CPU or HD then check off the relevant box/s as well (for example networking or registry)
Let it run for 60 secs or more and save the file (it will show you where it is being saved and what the file is called
Zip the file and upload to us on Onedrive (or any file sharing service) and give us a link to it in your next post.

Here is an article that can help you address this issue:
OS X: How to quit an unresponsive application using Force Quit

    Additional Information
OS X automatically relaunches the Finder when it is quit. If the Finder is unresponsive, use Force Quit to relaunch it. Select Finder in the Force Quit Window or Dock, then click Relaunch.

  • Desktop icons unresponsive until logoff or reboot

Hey everyone, I work in a public library and we have our public pc's locked down pretty good.  But we have been seeing little things come up over the past couple of years since we moved to Win7 Pro from XP that I am unfamiliar with and have not been
able to find a resolution.  For this post I will only ask about one issue.  We use GPO's to control pretty much everything and we created new GPO's and upgraded/tweaked them for Win7.  We are redirecting the AppData(Roaming), Desktop,
and Documents folders and I have verified the permissions repeatedly to no avail.  We went from mandatory profiles with XP to the 3 redirected folders in Win7 to try to speed up login times.  That has helped in almost all cases, but I feel that
it has opened Pandora's box in others.  Such as this issue for one.
What our staff and I have seen is that randomly on public access machines, in different locations, with different users, at different times, the icons on the desktop become unresponsive until you logoff or reboot.  We have standardized our pc's
and have them on 3 year rotation with HP 6300's, 600's, and 800's and I use WDS to push down a standardized image.  So they are all running the same basic things.  Win7Pro, IE10, Office 2010, Adobe Reader, Flash, etc., but I again am sure that
I have just not been asking the right question via Google to search of a proper response.
So does anyone have any suggestions?
    Thank you,
    Joe

    Hi LibraryITGuy,
The main issue is all the desktop will be unresponsive and we cannot operate the machine or just the icons on it are unresponsive and we can still operate it ?
Have you tried to restart the "Windows Explorer" process to have a check through the task manager by pressing Ctrl +Alt+ Del ?
This issue may be caused by application crashing or some specific process occupied much system sources .
When the issue occur ,we can open the task manager to check whether there is a specific application crashing or some specific process occupying many system sources. If there is a suspicious  process ,we can try to end it manually and  have a check.
As an alternative choice ,we also can use Process Explorer to check the process running at present .
    Process Explorer v16.04

Meanwhile ,please check the Event Viewer for any warnings or errors related to this .This path may be helpful :

  • [Solvedish] KDE 4.10.4 - Plasma Desktop becomes unresponsive.

Anyone else having issues with the latest KDE?   On my 64bit machine, using a newer nvidia card, after I open an app, the entire desktop becomes unresponsive.   It also gives me an error about Knotify crashing.  I can't click the menu button, no right-click options appear, and nothing on the taskbar can be manipulated.   When in this state, I can still launch TF2 or Kerbal Space Program from Steam, but when I exit the game the desktop is still frozen, until I do a reboot.
My 32-bit machine hasn't done any of this, running on an old nvidia card.
I've tried deleting ~/.kde4, but even a default profile does this.  Anyone have any idea what I could try to do to diagnose or fix what is wrong?

Ok this is a werid one.  It did this all last night, and yet I just booted it, and it seems to be working fine.  I guess it just needed to rest while I was at work.  Problems like this are annoying.
Why glitch out all night, but be fine after a cold boot?   Oh well, I guess it's working again.   lol

  • HT1199 desktop and screensaver is unresponsive

When I open up desktop and screensaver it is unresponsive. I have no clue what to do..

Hello, see how many of these you can answer...
See if the Disk is issuing any S.M.A.R.T errors in Disk Utility...
    http://support.apple.com/kb/PH7029
Open Activity Monitor in Applications>Utilities, select All Processes & sort on CPU%, any indications there?
How much RAM & free space do you have also, click on the Memory & Disk Usage Tabs.
Open Console in Utilities & see if there are any clues or repeating messages when this happens.
In the Memory tab, are there a lot of Pageouts

  • Blue screen, flickering, unresponsive mouse and desktop, problems reinstal

For a while now my Imac has been playing up, one day I turned it on and it went to a blue screen, this had never happened before and obviously as all newbies to macs I kind of freaked out but hoped it would just 'go away' but for a few months now it always goes to the blue screen before properly starting up, sometimes it will just crash at the grey apple icon with the little wheel stopping.
My mac has become very slow, opening small applications such as Skype would send it into a melt down, making the whole display look really strange, then it started flickering, grey vertical lines across the screen. Overtime this stopped and only happened occasionally, however recently after my mac has powered on, the desktop/finder would be unresponsive, the mouse would track but I could not click on ANYTHING, I'm even unable to force quit or relaunch the finder. I had to force restart the mac numerous times in the hope it would just work, however it didnt.
I decided my only option was to erase and reinstall mac os x, seriously it took me about, 10 hours to try and do this, non stop!! it would hang at 12% and then not do anything for hours, I again, had to force restart the mac, then it would say it could not be installed as the start up disk wasn't recognised, which I will add in now that for MONTHS I have not been able to select the macintosh HD as my start up disk, always says something about the bless tool being unable to select it :S
Anyway, it finally worked, the reinstalling, however it reinstalled, I logged in and then, again, the mouse or the finder became unresponsive!! I thought erasing and reinstalling would have fixed this!
Its finally working now, however I'm not sure for how long, it still has the blue screen when starting up which I hoped would also be fixed, and I am still unable to change the start up disk, I have tried resetting the PRAM, and run numerous disk utility tests which always come back saying the mac is fine.
I'm not very smart when it comes to macs and how to sort them out, I have apple care and wondered whether I should just take it in store and ask them to take a look at it, or if there is anything else I could possibly do to try and fix this myself?!
    Any help please!

Hi, and welcome to the forums.
for MONTHS I have not been able to select the macintosh HD as my start up disk, always says something about the bless tool being unable to select it :S
In future, when bad things start happening, investigate. They rarely get better by themselves.
I have apple care and wondered whether I should just take it in store and ask them to take a look at it, or if there is anything else I could possibly do to try and fix this myself?!
That sounds like hardware problems, most likely the internal HD. Try running this: [Apple Hardware Test: iMac (Mid 2007) and later models|http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1883]. Run the Extended tests.
and/or the (free) Rember, a heavy-duty memory tester, from: http://www.kelleycomputing.net/
If either show errors, yes, you'll need to make an appointment at the Genius Bar: http://www.apple.com/retail/geniusbar/
If not, try Verifying your internal HD, per #6 in [Formatting, Partitioning, Verifying, and Repairing Disks|http://web.me.com/pondini/AppleTips/DU.html] (or use the link in *User Tips* at the top of the +Using Snow Leopard+ forum).
Then +*Repair Permissions+* on it, per #5 there.
    Do you have backups?

  • OSX now crashes every hour. OSX apps like Dock, desktops, launchpad, finder, toolbar, etc become unresponsive, although sometimes non OSX apps (like Chrome, TextMate, etc) remain functioning briefly. No obvious reason or trigger

OSX now crashes every hour. For no obvious reason or trigger, suddenly OSX apps like Dock, desktops, launchpad, finder, toolbar, etc become unresponsive, although sometimes non OSX apps (like Chrome, TextMate, etc) remain functioning briefly, before the whole thing hangs and needs a hard reboot.
It is not apparent what I do to provoke the crash -- it happens while I am in seemingly any application, sometimes just reading a page and not taking any actions.
This started happening very suddenly two days ago. It might have happened around the time I updated ITunes but I'm not sure of this at all. And I never use ITunes or have it open.
Don't know how to diagnose the problem since nothing is accessible whence it freezes up on me.  I tried software update, but problem continued after. Would appreciate troubleshooting advice. Thanks!

If you have more than one user account, these instructions must be carried out as an administrator.
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the icon grid.
    Step 1
Make sure the title of the Console window is All Messages. If it isn't, select All Messages from the SYSTEM LOG QUERIES menu on the left. If you don't see that menu, select
    View ▹ Show Log List
    from the menu bar.
Enter "BOOT_TIME" (without the quotes) in the search box. Note the timestamps of those log messages, which refer to the times when the system was booted. Now clear the search box and scroll back in the log to the last boot time after  you had the problem. Select the messages logged before the boot, while the system was unresponsive or was failing to shut down. Copy them to the Clipboard (command-C). Paste into a reply to this message (command-V). Please include the BOOT_TIME message at the end of the log extract.
If there are runs of repeated messages, post only one example of each. Don’t post many repetitions of the same message.
When posting a log extract, be selective. In most cases, a few dozen lines are more than enough.
Please do not indiscriminately dump thousands of lines from the log into this discussion.
Important: Some private information, such as your name, may appear in the log. Anonymize before posting.
    Step 2
Still in Console, look under System Diagnostic Reports for crash or panic logs, and post the entire contents of the most recent one, if any. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if present (it may not be.) Please don’t post shutdownStall, spin, or hang logs — they're very long and not helpful.

  • Jammed after start up - login items load, but desktop is unresponsive

When I start up my iMac, everything seems to load up, start up items load, but the desktop is totally unresponsive. Apps will not run, windows will not open, close, resize or move, menu does not respond. All I have is a frozen screen, nothing responds except the mouse cursor.
Whilst the desktop is unresponsive, the Activity Monitor icon in the Dock shows sporadic activity and there is disk noise from the boot drive, indicating it is doing something.
    I have tried:
    - resetting the PRAM - no effect, unresponsive desktop as before
    - restarting in Safe Mode & preventing start up items from loading - no effect, unresponsive desktop as before
    - starting up from my backup clone external hard disk ( made using SuperDuper) - starts up to the backup disk's desktop, then jams as before
    - starting up using the Recovery Partition, (10.8.2) created when I first installed 10.8 - jams on OSX Utilities screen, no options are selectable
    - starting up using an install disc that  I made on a USB stick (10.8.2)  - jams on OSX Utilities screen, no options are selectable
The problem started soon after I updated Safari & iTunes to the most recent versions yesterday 23 October 2013

OK, I've answered my own question and now I feel really stupid not spotting the problem myself before asking for help.
Answer: - the left button of my mouse (Logitech Perfomance MX) has stopped working !
Hence, no response when I clicked or dragged. Everthing works fine with a different mouse, or after remapping "left click" to the right button of the Logitech. Interesting on how even the OSX Utilities screen and the Hardware Test rely on a (working) mouse to operate.
    Apologies for wasting people's time.
