Desktop widget in background

Using terminal I've set Dashboard to developer mode so that I can have some of my widgets on the desktop for ready reference. Whenever the widgets are on the desktop, they are always in front of any other window on the desktop. Is there a way to have these widgets move to the background and be behind any other windows?
Thanks, denny

I've never heard of any way to turn off floating when you do this but you can try this shareware
http://www.amnestywidgets.com/Singles.html
it lets you convert widgets into regular apps and then they won't float.

I'd like to see a floaty desktop widget or sidebar similar to what's on Android that just shows current song, play, skip, pause, etc without having to launch the full spotify client.

Ok so small on top window a la itunes is a must for me. i teach guitar and work on a macbook so i need to be able to check arrangements and pause songs whilst i prepare scores. premium users should get a ittle upgrade p thank youath to a small skin always on top thing that lets you pause and play and click next or previous.
seeing as how you guys have sort of cloned and then improved on itunes by making it much more user friendly and cutting edge just take the next step and make a transperent play pause floating bar that can lock to the top of the screen. it could even have a scrolling text to tell you when a new album is released by your favourite artist etc.
Im sure this has been suggested before but it is a must happen thing.
    Rock on.
Other tha that i love the new layout and particularely like the playlists with the current top 50 best new pop or whatever style. discovering a whole bunch of new acts and its so eas to use. Thanks!!

However many times I re download the widget app I get the same result.
The reason for the download was that the previous installation started to behave strangely downloading a lot of stuff for no apparent reason. I have Kaspersky Internet Security which is up to date and Advanced System Care. None of my security programs report any malware.
Re-installation of windows is out of the question!!!
I have tried everything on the forum with no sucess - any help gratefully recieved. Thanks

I have EXACTLY the same issue, had issues with downloading excessive data. Uninstalled latest version of widget and latest version of Adobe Air. The I reinstalled them fresh...or tried too. The Met Office Widget failed exactly as yours did. My log looks like yours.
I contacted the Met Office and got this response:
    Thank you for your email.
There is a known issue at this time with the Met Office Desktop Widget which is currently under investigation by our IT Team.
We hope to have this resolved shortly and we apologise for any inconvenience this may have caused you.
We just might have to wait they have no date for a fix yet!

Version 1.3 promises to bring lot of new components, but it isn't there yet.
There are some components people "built from scratch" (combo box, menu, tables), or if mobile isn't a target, they just use Swing components.

  • KDE Desktop Widgets Screen Locker Crashes

    Hi,
I'm running KDE 4.11.2 on an Arch x86_64 box. I looked through the KDE bug reports, but I couldn't find a bug filed about this, and I'm confused about where to start looking.
If I use the 'Simple Locker' and lock my screen, everything works wonderfully and as expected. But if I switch to the 'Desktop Widgets' screen locker and lock my screen, everything goes to pieces. The lock screen doesn't show up, and my system freezes.
I'm still able to move my mouse, but everything else is unresponsive, and I can't click on anything. I opened a TTY login to kill the screenlocker, but it wasn't running.
The only thing that worked was rebooting it.
How do I start troubleshooting this?

    arojas wrote:
Kitchi wrote:Any idea if it will be fixed/dropped in next releases of KDE?
In KDE4: no, as there will be no more kde-workspace feature releases. For KDE5/Plasma2 (or whatever it will be called) it's all going to be rewritten anyway, so if it survives it will be in a very different form.
Does that include bug fixes? Apologies if that's a stupid question... I have no idea how the KDE releases work.
I guess that answers the question either way... I'm not marking the thread as solved since the issue still persists.
@Box0 - That's the bug... I did check the resolution mentioned, but it matches my screen resolution. So that can't be the problem. I'm thinking that it could be a permission conflict somehow, with the screen locker trying to access some files that have wrong permissions set.

  • How 2 put desktop widget in the background?

i have managed to put widget on the desktop from the dashboard. now i want to know...
    a) how to put the widget in the background? it remains on top all the time.
    b) how to have 'space' specific widgets. right now all of them appear in all spaces.
    thanks
    Neerav

haha! i thought it was a hidden secret until google told be otherwise.
btw, i am not sure if u understand my question. i want the widgets to stay on the desktop but not on top of all other applications. it should come on top only when i select it.
rebooting still maintains the widgets i transfered to the desktop to stay there, which is good, but, they always remain on top, which i don't want.

  • Desktop widget developer urgently needed - Oslo, Norway

Oslo-based digital media agency Confetti (www.confetti.no) is
urgently looking for help to build a simple integrated desktop/web
widget for a client (a publisher who wishes to distribute a widget
based on the search page and news feed of their flagship
    encyclopedia product)
The user would be able to download the widget to their
desktop (whether OSX, XP or Vista). The window would be large
    enough to
    contain the following;
    1. Brand logo
    2. A search box for the encyclopedia
    3. A news feed for up to 6 x 2 line news items ("on this day
    in history........")
Look and feel is envisaged as very simple and clean.
Preference would be for Adobe AIR based approaches.
It's important to the client that users can download the
widget with the minimum of fuss to their desktop. In other words,
the client would strongly prefer that users don't have to
pre-install Yahoo, Apple, Google, or MSoft widget engines.....
However, we don't want to exclude deploying the widget to at
least the Yahoo widget platform in the future, so the widget build
    should be easily exportable.
We are up against a tight deadline, so would like to have a
discussion about this today if yoyu are interested in pitching for
the job. The build will need to be done in the next 3 weeks.
    Grateful for quick response

  • Yahoo! Desktop Widgets

(The following problem has to do with Yahoo! widgets on the Desktop, not in Dashboard...)
    Hello,
Previous to the need to do a complete OS-X system reinstall my Yahoo! widgets worked fine.
After re-installing OS-X 10.4.5 something rather strange is happening. I went to Yahoo's web site and downloaded their Widgets Engine 3.1.5 and installed it. (This is the only problem I am having after the OS re-install)
The problem I am having is that the widgets supplied with that widet engine download come up and work fine.
However, when I got to Yahoo!'s widget catalog and down load widgets that worked fine prior to the OS being reinstalled the following happens...
I put the downloaded widget icon on the Desktop and click on it. It acts as though it is about to come up but it does not. When I go to the widget icon up in the menu bar I have a constand and non-stopping spinning colored beach ball.
It is beyond me why the widgets that are downloaded with the Yahoo! Widget Engine 3.1.5 work but the other downloaded widgets do not work.
Any ideas/suggestions will be greatly appreciated. I might add that these same widets I can not get to work on the G4 iBook have been and are working fine on my G5 iMac as they use to do on the iBook also.
    TIA

Have you tried removing and then reinstalling Yahoo! Widget Engine? You need to make sure you not only remove the app itself but all associated files (a quick spotlight search for Yahoo! should find a lot of those files I would think).
Give it a reinstall and let us know how you get on.

  • OS 10.9.3-CAN WE HAVE "DESKTOP" WIDGETS-NOT ON DASHBOARD?

I've had a Local WeatherBug widget for several yrs. I simply moved my cursor to the lower right corner
and it appeared giving me local weather information.  I moved my cursor again and it was gone.
I loved it!!  Now, after some repairs necessitating a clean system install and, thus, upgrading to
OS 10.9.3, I've been trying to get it back.......but  no such luck.
It seems the only way I can get any weather widget is by putting it on my Dashboard. . .  but…
I DON'T NEED OR USE THE DASHBOARD.  The Dashboard, for me, is just adding another step.
The few apps I suppose I could use are duplicates. I have Apple's OS apps on my DOCK because I
use them ALL THE TIME. ex: Calendar, Calculator  & Dictionary. They're right there!
I don't have to open one thing to get to another....... they're always visible.   The Dashboard only
complicates things and adds another step instead of the app just opening up.
I've been to WeatherBug and it's all very confusing.  I downloaded one app that turned-out to be
for Windows only. OK >>  trash!
Then I downloaded another for Macs. It put a "Bug" only on my desktop and kept saying the app.
was open-- I couldn't even trash it because "it was open".  I ended up shutting down and then
restarting to close the darn thing so I was then able to  >>>> trash.
Then I tried the one Apple offers for WeatherBug...but that's for the Dashboard.
No option that I know of, or could find anyway,  to put it anywhere else— or once there, to move
    anywhere else.
IS THERE SOME WAY, AFTER A WIDGET IS DOWNLOADED TO THE DASHBOARD, WHERE IT CAN BE
MOVED OUT OF THE DASHBOARD AND ONTO THE DESKTOP?
If so, would someone please tell me -- step by step-- how to do this. On the Dashboard, it's worthless
to me.  I might as well just click on my favorites bookmark bar for the TV stations weather report.
We all use our Apple products differently. I only have my Mac because that's all I need.  I suppose
many of these new applications are for syncing with other Apple products and for people who do many
more things on their products than I do.  But...... WHERE ARE THE OPTIONS TO KEEP IT SIMPLE??
Having to open one app to get to another one is NOT SIMPLE!!  It's not the “Apple way” but then many
new things aren't the “Apple way” = intuitive, simple-- easy.
    Thank you.

From your description, I think you simply have been using Dashboard all along. Open System Preferences -> Mission Control and click on 'Hot Corners'. Click on the lower right menu and select Dashboard.
If Dashboard doesn't show up as a transparent layer for you, also in Mission Control preferences deselect the option 'Show Dashboard as a Space',

  • Lost desktop moving stars background

Somehow I have lost the desktop picture of dark background with moving stars.  I've tried to go back in the time machine to find it but don't see it anywhere.  Any thoughts of what might have happened to it, or where I can download a replacement?  Little think, I know, but it's bugging the **** out of me!

Restarting Finder should bring back your desktop icons.
(Apple menu->Force quit-> Finder and relaunch
Your desktop is equivalent to the folder username/desktop.
Sounds like you accidentally copied a few thousand photos from iPhoto to your desktop. You could open username/desktop and do a search for "jpg" (or narrow it down to images) for the desktop folder ONLY and remove anything you don't want.
Or switch to list view and sort your files by kind.

  • [SOLVED] Mate desktop and rotating backgrounds

    Hello Arch Community,
As I've aged my vision has degraded. I now use a 42" LED (not lcd) TV as my main monitor. I've got a post into the mfg asking about burn-in related issues on my specific model.
I see on the web varying opinions, screenshots, supporting, or debunking LED based burniin. I have never in all of my working career, have I ever had an LCD or LED monitor burn-in. It is curious on why the TV's would suffer from this seeing that they use the same technology.
The difference for me is, I have the sharpness, brightness, contrast, and backlights all cranked down to sane levels. I've always ran my monitors "gently" instead of bright. Bright hurts my eyes,...... a lot.
The screen is 3' away from me, so it doesn't need to broadcast it's photons across the living room.
    Back on topic......
As a precaution, I've set my taskbar to auto-hide.
But I'd like to setup my screen backgrounds to rotate on a periodic basis. I don't see a native MATE mechnism for doing this.
Can someone please offer suggestions on how to do this in my chosen DE?
    Thank you very much!
    Sincerley and respectfully,
    Dave

    You could try installing Feh.
You'll have to stop Caja from drawing your background first, though.
    Open a terminal and run:
    $ mateconf-editor
and navigate to / -> apps -> caja -> preferences and untick "show_desktop".
Then run Feh as per the wiki's instructions for a random background.
EDIT: wrote the wrong mateconf entry, sorry. Also this will stop caja drawing icons on your desktop - who needs those anyway?
