Desktop will not startup....help

I updated my iMac last night. Then when I went to restart after the update my desktop does not start up. The only thing I get is the spotlight search glass in the upper right hand corner of my screen. I tried booting the computer up in safe mode and the desktop and all my folders show up. But again if i start it up regularly nothing shows?
If anyone can help me that would be great.

The symptom you describe indicates that you have a system preference or extension that is either corrupt or incompatible with the new OS version. Boot into safe mode, launch Applications/Utilities/Console, and examine the system and console logs from the time of the previous boot. Look for anything that looks like an error message about something or other in one of the system's folders being unable to load, or being corrupt. You may recognize the name of the item or the folder its in as belonging to some third-party software you have installed. Uninstalling whatever it is should get you past the magnifying glass.

  • OSX 10.6 Will Not Startup - Help Please!

OK. I am running Snow Leopard (latest version) which was all working wonderfully until I installed a T-mobile dongle. Since restarting the system after installing the dongle the OS will not start. It gets to the screen where the Apple logo appears and the spinning cog but remains in that state permanant.
So far I have tried the following:
    Reset RAM
Tried to start in safe mode
Started with install disc and used diskutility to check disk. All was fine
    Fixed permissions
Now I know this problem is something to with the software the T-mobile dongle has installed. Is there any way of removing without loading the OS via termianl or something (I would need detailed instructions).
Or is there anything else I can try failing archive and reinstall which is my very last resort.
    Thanks everybody.
    Stefan

    Hi Stefan2908;
You might be able to remove the T-Mobile crap if you have access to another Mac and boot your Mac in Target Disk Mode with the two Mac connected via Firewire. That should give you access to the disk in your Mac from the other Mac.

  • InDesign CC fails to startup, CC Desktop will not install

One of the Macs will not start up InDesign. It gives the error message that we have insufficient permissions to access the preferences folder. We have made the preferences folder read/write for all and applied this to all enclodsed folders, but no change. Added to this the CC desktop will not install; I have changed the OOBE folder to OOBE_old and again no change. Does anyone have any clues as this is beginning to seriously hamper production. Thanks.

  • TS1365 My MacBook Pro will not startup.  At all.  The suggestions from Apple Support are not helping.  At all.  Someone help?!?

My MacBook Pro will not startup.  Its not responding at all.  Does anyone have any suggestions on how I can correct this?

    HI Catherine,
First, make sure it it shut down by holding down the power button for 5-10 seconds. Plug in the power adapter. Press the power button and hold down the shift key to see if you can start in Safe Mode.
If the power adapter and/or battery are known good, the next thing I'd check would be the RAM to make sure it is securely seated. If batt and/or power adapter are questionable, then you'll want to find one or both and try them out; if you don't know someone with a similar MBP, this might be most easily accomplished by making a free appointment at an Apple Store "genius" bar.

'''Try the Firefox Safe Mode''' to see how it works there. The Safe Mode is a troubleshooting mode, which disables most add-ons.''
''(If you're not using it, switch to the Default theme.)''
    * You can open the Firefox 4.0+ Safe Mode by holding the '''Shift''' key when you use the Firefox desktop or Start menu shortcut.
    * Or use the Help menu item and click on the '''Restart with Add-ons Disabled...''' menu item while Firefox is running.
''Don't select anything right now, just use "'Start in Safe Mode"''
''To exit the Firefox Safe Mode, just close Firefox and wait a few seconds before using the Firefox shortcut (without the Shift key) to open it again.''

  • Firefox will not startup at my homepage.

I recently updated to Firefox 4. Firefox will not startup at my homepage. It starts up at the last website(s) I was on before ending my previous session. Under options it is set to startup at my homepage but still will not no matter what I have tried. The only reason this is annoying is because if I ended on a website that is password protected before signing out it doesn't seem to sign me out automatically like the previous version I had.

Certain Firefox problems can be solved by performing a ''Clean reinstall''. This means you remove Firefox program files and then reinstall Firefox. Please follow these steps:
'''Note:''' You might want to print these steps or view them in another browser.
#Download the latest Desktop version of Firefox from http://www.mozilla.org and save the setup file to your computer.
#After the download finishes, close all Firefox windows (click Exit from the Firefox or File menu).
#Delete the Firefox installation folder, which is located in one of these locations, by default:
    #*'''Windows:'''
    #**C:\Program Files\Mozilla Firefox
    #**C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox
#*'''Mac:''' Delete Firefox from the Applications folder.
#*'''Linux:''' If you installed Firefox with the distro-based package manager, you should use the same way to uninstall it - see [[Installing Firefox on Linux]]. If you downloaded and installed the binary package from the [http://www.mozilla.org/firefox#desktop Firefox download page], simply remove the folder ''firefox'' in your home directory.
#Now, go ahead and reinstall Firefox:
##Double-click the downloaded installation file and go through the steps of the installation wizard.
##Once the wizard is finished, choose to directly open Firefox after clicking the Finish button.
Please report back to see if this helped you!

  • HP m9300t desktop will not boot

Hoping someone can help me out here.  I think my motherboard is shot but would appreciate some second opinions.  My HP m9300t desktop will not boot past the initial "HP Invent" blue splash screen.  On this screen, I have the options to enter Setup, Boot Menu, Recovery, or Diagnostics.  Normally, this screen will display for a few seconds then the PC will start to boot into Windows but that's not happening anymore.  Instead, it just hangs on the "HP Invent" screen.  If I attempt to enter Boot Menu, Recovery, or Diagnostics, nothing happens.  If I attempt to enter Setup, it will display a message saying "entering Setup" but the computer just hangs there and never does enter Setup.  I hear my fans spinning, I *think* I hear at least one of the hard drives spin up (I have two in the system), the blu-ray drive activity light blinks as it normally does when I turn the system on, but again, system will not boot past the HP splash screen.  I have tried booting from the Windows cd (no luck) as well as attempted to boot with all peripherals disconnected except keyboard and mouse and again, no luck.  I have noticed that the past two days the system has behaved somewhat erratically, locking up two times requiring a reboot but I just chalked that up to general Windows instability and/or my installing of some new beta software for a HDHomeRun cablecard tuner I just installed.  Looking back though, maybe those were some warning signs that my motherboard was on the brink of dying.  In any case, what I am thinking now is that the motherboard needs to be replaced but before I go out and buy a new one, I wanted to get other people's opinions in case I am overlooking something.  Thanks for any help that you can offer.

    Marty, welcome to the forum.
Since the computer is over 3 years old, I believe that you have a failed power supply unit (PSU).  Here is a guide to help you troubleshoot the problem.

My mac desktop will not provide sound from internal speakers.  When I go to audio devices window it only shows airplay.  How can I get internal speakers back.

There are many possible causes for this issue. Take each of the following steps that you haven't already tried. Some may not apply to your model. Back up all data before making any changes.
    1. Start with the steps recommended in this support article. Don't skip any of the steps. It's the starting point for further efforts to solve the problem.
    2. Run Software Update and make sure you have a fully up-to-date installation of OS X.
    3. If you've installed an application called "Memory Clean" or any other third-party software that is supposed to "clean" or "purge" memory automatically, remove it according to the developer's instructions and restart. You should do that even if the software is not causing the problem, because it's useless.
    4. Other third-party software that has been reported to interfere with sound output includes "Boom" and "Samsung Kies." If applicable, uninstall according to the developer's instructions (not by dragging something to the Trash.)
    5. If an AirPlay device is selected for sound output from iTunes (or from other applications via third-party software such as "Airfoil"), deselect it.
    6. Launch the application "Audio MIDI Setup" by entering the first few letters of its name in a Spotlight search and selecting it in the results (it should be at the top.) Select Built-in Output from the list on the left. If the Mute boxes are checked, uncheck them.
    7. If a red light is visible in the audio-out port when sound should be playing, the internal switch is stuck in the position for digital output. You may be able to free it by inserting and removing a mini-stereo jack of the proper size. Inserting any kind of tool in the port may cause damage that won't be covered by your warranty.
If there's no red light, the switch may still be stuck in the headphone position. Try to free it the same way.
    8. Disconnect all wired peripherals except keyboard and mouse, if applicable. If more than one display is connected, disconnect all extra ones. Restart and test.
    9. If you have a MacBook Air, turn off Bluetooth and restart.
    10. Start up in safe mode. Don't log in; just restart as usual when the login screen appears. When you do, make sure the words "Safe Boot" do not appear in the login screen. If they do, the system is still in safe mode and sound won't work.
    11. Reset the NVRAM.
    12. Reset the SMC.
    13. Triple-click anywhere in the line below on this page to select it:
    /Library/Preferences/Audio
Right-click or control-click the highlighted line and select
Services ▹ Reveal in Finder (or just Reveal)
from the contextual menu.* A folder should open with an item selected. Move the selected item to the Trash. You may be prompted for your administrator login password. Restart the computer and empty the Trash. Recreate your settings in the Sound preference pane.
*If you don't see the contextual menu item, copy the selected text to the Clipboard by pressing the key combination  command-C. In the Finder, select
              Go ▹ Go to Folder...
from the menu bar and paste into the box that opens by pressing command-V. You won't see what you pasted because a line break is included. Press return.
    14. Reinstall OS X after backing up all data.
    15. Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store.
