[Desktop][Your Music] Make "Your Music" friendlier to large collections

I've appreciated all the big interface changes that have gone into helping out people who like to collect album-by-album, and the "Your Music" functionality is really great. However, for people with big collections such as myself (well over 6000 songs spanning over 18 straight days of music, although i'm sure I'm not the biggest out there) it's kind of hard to just browse your music looking for an album to listen to. The album art based "Albums" view is very pretty, but for me it only fits 8 albums on screen at a time, which makes browsing your collection by album very slow. My idea is to add a slider, similar to the functionality that lets you change icon size in Windows' File Explorer, by which you could control the size of the albums manually:  (Image not mine) It would also be cool to have "List" functionality, like File Explorer; just displaying the albums in a big list next to the artist and year, sort of how the Songs view is now, but for albums. It's a pretty minor gripe, but it would help make Spotify more usable for "music hoarders" such as myself :)

  • Large Collection, Re-Adding Music Folder . . . Best Practice?

My wife and I have a very large collection of music that we have been trying to incorporate into a single library for our laptops to use. I think I have it mostly figured out for sharing a library (found an article about using synctoy in Windows to essentially mirror the libraries from a shared network drive while using the same physical copy of music files on a network drive. This seems to be working so far, but...
In the process I have been moving from having a mirrored copy of music on each laptop (via an external USB drive on each laptop) to consolidating that into one music folder on the networked drive. I've got it just about complete but I ran an xcopy script again to ensure all music files from those drives really made it in entirety to the networked drive AFTER adding folder to library in iTunes. Now of course iTunes doesn't know those new files are there and they are all over the place, not in just one directory.
Now the question, if I select add folder to library in iTunes again selecting the entire music folder so it will pick up those new files, will it create duplicate entries in iTunes? Or should this work ok?
Is there an easier way to do this?

I think it will not add duplicates. It might if you also tell iTunes to add music to the iTunes library as well. Here is my tip and what I do.
I make a music library folder called "Music Library", in there I store my music via artists (each in their own folder), and then albums in sub folders. I name the folders exactly as they are embedded in the mp3. I know this is not necessary but that's just me. For my compilation music I have a folders called compilations and again the albums are stored in sub folders named after the album.
I also name every file with the track, artist and title (I use mp3Tag for this) so every track on my system looks something like this
    "01 The Who - I'm A Man.mp3"
Now I use iTunes to get encode and get track info but that's it, I then do the renaming manually.
Now that I have all this done and backed up on DVD's I can move, reload etc etc when I want to. I have it all on external hard drives as well.
So finally I ensure that my iTunes default library folder is always empty, that way whenever I delete all or part of "My" library iTunes does not ask me if I want to delete them from the hard drive.
Manually adding the top level folder to iTunes does not duplicate anything. I regularly delete my library and reinstall it. This does not take long, I also save playlists and import them back as well.
Letting iTunes organise your music is OK for some but not me, for one thing it does not add the artist to the actual filename, crazy if you ask me, specially if you want to do other things with the files. Of course Apple does not want you to do other things with your music.
If you look on this forum at posts relating to iTunes has deleted my music, or all my files are missing or iTunes can't find my music, I bet that the people all let iTunes manage their music library and turn on the sync function. I used to have some of these issues but not anymore. I deleted files from my hard drive twice by accident, and I'm an experienced computer user. Now I'm 100% trouble free thanks to doing things manually and making my own music folder.

I have a PC desktop and an iPad.  I have a large library of PDF documents on my desktop that I would like to sync with my iPad.  I would like to be able to download new PDF's and make edits on existing PDF's on either device and have those edits and new PDFs synced to the other device.  I would also like to have my library available on the iPad even if there isn't a wifi connection (i.e., not on the cloud).  Is that possible.  I don't mind if I have to purchase a separate product or a product upgrade ect.

You can't use an external hard drive like you would with a computer.
You can use a USB flash drive & the camera connection kit.
Plug the USB flash drive into your computer & create a new folder titled DCIM. Then put your movie/photo files into the folder. The files must have a filename with exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus the file extension (i.e., my-movie.mov; DSCN0164.jpg).
Now plug the flash drive into the iPad using the camera connection kit. Open the Photos app, the movie/photo files should appear & you can import. (You can not export using the camera connection kit.)
When you first connect the USB flash drive, you will only see thumbnails of the pics on the iPad; you have to import the pic file to see the full size. With your large library of pics, you will have to do this repeateably and then delete pics so you don't exceed your memory capacity.

I have lost my harddrive which contains a vast amount of music I've been collecting for many years. I just purchased a new Mac, but I've reached my activation limit. And I only have access to 2 of the 5 activated computers. My old music can still be played on my iPod, but I need to set up another account on my new Mac. What will happen to my music if I were to deactivate all of activated computers?

Authorization determines to which computers material requiring authorization can be transferrred using the itunes interface.  If you want to re-download past purchases then a computer need to be authorized.
As for transferring music from the iPod, your i-device was not designed for unique storage of your media. It is not a backup device and media transfer is designed with you maintaining a master copy of your media on a computer which is itself properly backed up against loss. Syncing is one way, computer to device, updating the device content to the content on the computer, not updating or restoring content on a computer. The exception is purchased content.
iTunes Store: Transferring purchases from your iOS device or iPod to a computer - http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1848 - only media purchased from iTunes Store
For transferring other items from an i-device to a computer you will have to use third party commercial software. Examples (check the web for others; this is not an exhaustive listing, nor do I have any idea if they are any good):

How do I add music from my CD collection to iTunes if my Apple computer doesn't have an optical drive to take the music from the CD's to my iTunes library?

    1) Use a different computer which has an optical drive, then transfer the media files to the other computer.
    2) Buy an external optical drive for your computer.

  • Make Text and Other Items Larger or Smaller - Default? (related to screen resolution)

In Windows 7, when you go to set the screen resolution, there is a link to "Make Text and Other Items Larger or Smaller."  The default I've always seen is is "Smaller - 100%" in our deployments.  For some reason, after my new deployment that
I'm working on, it is set to "Medium - 125% as the default."
This changed when I imported the display drivers needed for the HP8440 laptop the deployment is going on. Before, Windows was just using a generic driver that maxed at 640x480 and the user had to manually install the drivers. Now that I've imported the drivers
into the deployment, the default resolution is 1920x1200 as it should be, but this one last default is making it look like there is a smaller resolution.
Is there any way, in the deployment, to set this option to "Smaller - 100%" as the default?
This is what I am seeing after Windows loads for the first time:

I get "Invalid syntax" when I try to run that. I've gone through the help on the REG command, and everything seems to be in order. I also opened CMD as administrator. I've tried some different variations on the command (quotes around the path, etc)
but nothing seems to work. Any ideas?
You're getting an invalid syntax since it contains a space betweeen 'Windows' and 'NT' when using command lines, spaces will break the commands to be executed since it thinks that spaces are delimiters for syntax value's.
    REG ADD "HKLM\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\FontDPI" /v LogPixels /t REG_DWORD /d 0x60 /f
Edit; The thread starter had success with using the following path instead "HKCU\Control Panel\Desktop"
It should work like it's written above using quotes around the entire path. Without the quotes you'll receive a syntax error. However unless the command is executed in an elevated command prompt you'll get an access is denied error. And finally the /f switch
is required to override the entry without prompt, since if the command if executed in an elevated command prompt it will detect the current value and ask whether you want to overwrite it or not.
P.S. I verified if it executes properly.
    Kind regards,
    Stephan Schwarz.

  • Make the Library Preview Windows Larger?

Is there any way to make the Library Preview Window larger? When I'm working at a high screen resolution, the previews are just too small to see.

You can also turn on zoom in System Preferences/Universal Access, then use *cmd opt =* (that's holding down the command or apple key, the option key, and the = key) to enlarge, cmd opt - to shrink back down.

  • After Effects & Premiere Pro CS4 users: Turn off "Make text and other items larger or smaller" (Win)

I just made a brief blog post recommending that After Effects CS4 and Premiere Pro CS4 users turn off the "Make text and other items larger or smaller" setting in Windows 7, since it causes some problems.
Please use this thread to let us know whether this solved a problem for you or whether there are any problems with this solution.

There isn't really an option to "turn off" the feature. Do you mean to say that it should be set to "Smaller - 100% (default)"?

  • How do I make the font automatically get larger when it come to my screen?

I am a senior citizen and I need a large font. I found out how to make the font automatically get larger sometime ago but have forgotten how it was done. I want the font automatically get larger
each time a page come to my screen. For example, if I am in yahoo
email when I go into my inbox I would like for the font to be larger
without my having to do anything.
It seems to me that I went into "Tools" and got that done onetime but that does not seem to work now.

  • [Desktop][Your Music] Make Songs in Your Music be available offline like in mobile

We should be capable of taking saved songs in your music to offline on desktop like we do on mobile. Currently, there is no "available offline" button in songs in the your music area. Offline is currently available just on playlists,

Sorry, I forgot to clarify why specifically I am disobeying the instructions here, namely it was promised that that thread would remain open for comments about 5 months ago, however...it's closed... Seriously, if we can make any other playlist available offline, the feature used to exist, AND it is available on mobile...it cannot be an insurmountable challenge for Desktop, certainly not one worth waiting years for.

That makes no sense at all to make a difference between playlists and album or artist since this feature is available for Andriod app.

  • [Desktop][Your Music] Search within Your Music only, much faster

If I want to jump to a song in my saved music (Your Music) I don't want to have to wade through all the other artists on spotify, playlists, profiles, etc. that you get when you do a full search. Furthermore I don't want to wait the minimum half-second round trip for the search results to appear. It makes the whole operation feel sluggish and puts me off using search. Try typing a word into iTunes search. The moment you lift your finger off the key it's already found the matching song. As far as I can tell that's simply not possible in Spotify. I'm not sure what the best design is. I think there should be a way to do either a global search, or a search within your music. The latter should be possible to run entirely on your computer/device to make it nice and zippy.

Also, Winamp had an awesome shortcut for this: the J key. It brought up a window where you could literally type a letter or two from any part of the title, artist or album that you want. Hit enter and it starts playing. Or hit alt-q and it's queued. See it in the search results but it's not selected? Press the up and down arrows to select. Total time required - about three seconds. That's the kind of search ergonomics I would like to see in Spotify.
