Desperately awaiting FCP 2 patches...

How long does it usually take for the ".1"s or whatever to come around for Apple's video applications? I'm loving the new abilities (3Dish compositing, things like that), but on some days, it is too buggy to operate. Some bugs I've encountered in the last couple of days:
In FCP, sometimes the left and right channels of stereo files will play at two different speeds (one channel sounds normal, the other is in slow-mo).
In Motion, while in 3D-mode, sometimes text, particles, and light sources only show up as orange squares. I work mostly with motion graphics, so finding ways around this cost me a couple of days...I had to replace all text with illustrator files, live without particles, and move a single light around, instead of being able to have multiple lights.
I'm on a Dual 2.5 G5 with 2.5 GB of RAM and the stinky Radeon 9600 XT. It's not an awful machine, but it's starting to show its age. I know buying more RAM (or the only marginably-better ATI card available for G5s) would help, but I would rather just wait and get a Mac Pro or a really good MBP in the next year or so. I'm a college student, so I don't exactly have the budget of most video producers.
Any input at all regarding the bugs and/or ways to optimize system performance would be great. Thanks.
PowerMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.9)

It could also be the library database that was corrupted. Try the fixes suggested above. If the library still doesn't open, try this:  in the Finder – with the app closed, go to the library; open package contents; drag the Flexolibrary file to the Trash. Launch FCP and see whether the library will now open.

  • JCV Gy-HD100 camera patch for FCP

I recently talked with JVC rep who informed me of a FCP software patch to be releashed to solve the HDV capture problems with this camera. Has anyone senn or heard of its release by APPLE? This conversation was about two weeks ago.

Whichever type of tape you use stick with that brand. DO NOT alternate back and forth or you will tear up your heads (i.e. Sony vs JVC). Sony tapes use a lubricant on them and unless your camera or deck is made to work with them (which JVC is not) it can clog up your heads faster. Obviously the easiest solution is buy the brand of tape that is made by the manufacturer of your equipment - JVC, Sony, Panasonic, Canon, etc. Since you run JVC make sure its a non-lubricated tape.
Also be careful using the miniDV head cleaner tapes, they are extremely abrasive. Running them once and awhile is fine but it's better to have your heads professionally cleaned than using the miniDV cleaner tapes.

  • Installing Patch 9.2.0.5: Weird "Stop Running Services" Screen

    Hi to all.
I found this issue in several places, including this forum, but I never saw a working proposal for a satisfying solution. Installing Oracle Patch 9.2.0.5 over a 9.2.0.1-Installation on XP Pro, I was confronted with a "Stop Running Services" screen, that listed ALL running Windows Services, even the most basic ones, which are required for a working OS and cannot/should not be stopped. Of course I had stopped the Oracle listener and instance services (including the recovery service, omtsreco.exe).
I found using TASKLIST.EXE or LISTDLLS.EXE, that many Oracle DLLs like ORAPLS9.DLL were used by a command "svchost -k netsvcs". But I could not find out, where and for what reason this command is launched and how I can prevent this launching without hazarding the system. The string "netsvcs" can not be found in the registry, for instance.
At least, somehow I managed to do the job, but I cannot exactly recall all the steps I took! At the "Stop Running Services" screen I chose "Abort current component and continue installation", and after install finished (it said something like "install finished with errors" or that like), I was left with a non-functioning Oracle client. Whopee! It told me "Bad function entry point" when I tried to start SQL*Plus. Desperately, I started the patch installation a second time. THIS time I installed OUI 10.1.0.2 as a first step (which I did NOT during the first round), and then started patch install. Strangely, this time I was presented another flow of dialogs (Sorry, but I missed to make notes about the exact titles and the dialog flow), which took MUCH MUCH longer ("Analyzing Dependencies" for example, took 1.5 hours to complete), and I really do not know, how or whether I was confronted with a "Stop Running Services" issue), but after all I really managed to complete the second try successfully, and the client functions worked again (SQL*Plus reported the correct version, 9.2.0.5).
Before I'm driven through this hell again (I have to patch several workstations running 9.2.0.1), I'd like to know,
    - Whether the issue has been solved, that the "Stop Running Services Screen" lists
most basic services like "Event Manager". Could it have been caused by using the
wrong OUI version or under what circumstances will it appear?
    - Secondly, what is this mysterious "svchost -k netsvcs" (netsvcs = NETSerViCeS ?)
locking many of the DLL files in the Oracle "BIN" folder. It is definitely NOT
one of the Oracle listener or instance services (all of which start with "Oracle").
How can this service be disabled or be prevented from loading the Oracle DLLs?
Sorry for the long story and partially unclear details, since I do not recall all of the long installation session. Any input is welcome.
    Werner

Ok, "netsvcs" CAN be found in the registry, but I used FINDSTR.EXE to seach a UNICODE .REG file, and of course had no hits. Meanwhile, I learned more about SVCHOST.EXE and it's service groups, one of which is "netsvcs". In HKLM\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\SvcHost, I found a value and a key named "netsvcs", the value contains this string (abbreviated):
    "6to4
    AppMgmt
    AudioSrv
    Browser
    CryptSvc
    helpsvc
    xmlprov
    wscsvc
    WmdmPmSN".
These are the symbolic names of the services presented to me in the "Stop Running Services" screen! Now it's clear, why this screen appears, since "svchost -k netsvcs" is the process locking the Oracle DLLs.
But the question remains: WHY does "svchost -k netsvcs" need access to Oracle DLLs? Which system or application setting controls whether svchosts tries to load the DLLs?
    Still puzzled. Werner.

  • Where can I download 8.1.7.1 patch?

Hi, I'm desperately looking for the patch 8.1.7.1 for oracle EE on NT, is it possible to download it from oracle.com, and where?
    Thanks and regards
    vr

    You can use FTP
    148.87.8.191
Sign on as anonymous. You will need to provide your e-mail address.
After you get into the server, do a 'cd' to /server/patchsets/NT.
I think the file you need is:
    -rw-r--r-- 1 patchset ftpgrp 105054413 Nov 27 10:05 p1882450_8172_WINNT.zip
There's also a smaller file called:
    -rw-r--r-- 1 patchset ftpgrp 17827405 Nov 26 17:16 p2060528_8172_WINNT.zip
I don't know if you have to apply the second (smaller) patchset after applying the larger one.

  • New iWork Update Fixes Bugs!

Just finished installing and it works perfectly!

Pretty much the same as Keynote - the fine folks at Cupertino 'upgraded' FCP into a non-intuitive disaster. Two of my video guys are still gamely avoiding FCP X (or iMovie ***** as they delicately refer to it) in favour of the older, actually functional app.
Sometimes Apple just gets it wrong - and I suppose if I was making >80% of my money from iOS devices, they would be topmost in my mind too. But after 4 years, to reduce Keynote to such an unworkable level in order to ensure compatability across OS iOS and Cloud is just stupid. A 5-minute conversation with any pro user would have informed Apple that what they were proposing was just plain wrong.
I'm delighted to see them restore some of the functionality, workflow and features; but we have a long long way to go. Four years later, I expect a lot more from Apple. This is the first time they have ever let me down. I await the next patch with hope ...

  • Updated to 5.1 this weekend and lost wifi connectivity on iPhone 4 and Ipad 2

This weekend I updated my iPhone 4 (AT&T) and iPad 2 (Verizon 3G, wifi) to 5.1. Since the update (went flawlessly), I have been unable to connect to wifi networks anywhere. All that I get is the continuously running circle that shows it is trying to connect (but never actually does). I have RESET all Network connections numerous times, did the 'Forget this' connection on everything, etc. They will no longer connect to places that I have always connected to (Home network, CLE Airport, Hilton, Work, etc...). I can connect to all networks fine with my laptop and blackberry, but I just get the constant connection circle with my iPhone and iPad 2. Can anyone offer any other advise?
    I have tried:
    1. Reboot (Soft)
    2. Reboot (Hard (Home and Power button)
    3. Forget WiFi connection
    4. Reset Network Connections
    5. Tried 6 different Wireless (wifi) networks that I have always been able to connect to with no luck.
    6. Airplane Mode with wifi on...
    7. Turned 3G off...
Desperately awaiting some assistance, I do not have cell connections in our facilities or the hotel, so basically have a useless device right now!

I have the same problem with my Ipad 2 16gb WiFi, I bought it in US on march (I don´t live in US) I returned to my country and updated the IOS to 5.1.
One week ago the wifi signal dissapeared, I get the continuously running circle that shows it is trying to connect too.
I tried to reset it, to restart it, I even erase all content and settings but the problem continues.
As you can imagine an Ipad without internet connection is useless, I have opened a case in Apple Technical Support.
All I want to do is to return it
The question is if It will be possible to replace it or change it by other apple product. I will go to US again next month.

  • GL_SECURITY_PKG Performance

Hello all, I hope you can help..
I'm trying to report on a table from a data warehouse and i've hit problems.. Performance Problems and GL_SECURITY_PKG.validate_segval is to blame.
Using disco admin i've created a custom folder based on the following sql:
    SELECT * FROM cost_centre_hier WHERE GL_SECURITY_PKG.validate_segval(2,'',flex_value,'')='TRUE'
Querying the folder with security is SLOW and security works or with security turned off its QUICK but my customers can see every row.
Is there a way to speed up performance of validate_segval? I've heard caching mentioned but i don't think that will work for us - cardinality of flex_value is quite high.
I had thought, out of pure frustration, that q could create a lookup table with columns FLEX_VALUE, RESPONSIBILITY_ID and VALID. VALID would contain the value TRUE for every unique combination of FLEX_VALUE and RESPONSIBILITY_ID that can access a particular FLEX_VALUE - mimicking the functionality of validate_segval. This table would be built during the ETL that creates my warehouse table[s].
I would rewrite the custom folder SQL to query rows that return the value true using unique combinations of FLEX_VALUE and RESPONSIBILITY_ID.. instead of calling validate_segval...
So far its just an idea, its impractical but it might just work. Does anybody know how to determine where a particular responsibility can access a particular flex_value?
    Yours desperately,
    Joss.
    (Recommended patches are applied)

Thanks for the reply Roger. I have a solution.. and it's very quick (and i'm in a hurry so apologies if this doesn't read well..)
Extra info first. My FLEX_VALUE column == SEGMENT2 values.
In GL_SECURITY_PKG there is a query on a table called GL_BIS_SEGVAL_INT. This contains the segment_column_name, segment_value and parent_segment that my apps user can see.
So, i'm looking for SEGMENT2 values from this table...
    select * from GL_BIS_SEGVAL_INT where SEGMENT_COLUMN_NAME = 'SEGMENT2'
i join my original query to this query and.. bingo, i have what i need!
    SELECT
    MY_TABLE.FLEX_VALUE,
    GL_BIS_SEGVAL_INT.SEGMENT_COLUMN_NAME,
    GL_BIS_SEGVAL_INT.SEGMENT_VALUE,
    GL_BIS_SEGVAL_INT.PARENT_SEGMENT
    FROM
    MY_TABLE MY_TABLE,
    GL_BIS_SEGVAL_INT GL_BIS_SEGVAL_INT
    WHERE
    GL_BIS_SEGVAL_INT.SEGMENT_VALUE = MY_TABLE.FLEX_VALUE
    AND
    GL_BIS_SEGVAL_INT.SEGMENT_COLUMN_NAME = 'SEGMENT2'
returns only the flex_value/segment2 values my apps user has access to.
    regards,
    Joss.

  • I ordered Mountain Lion from App Store but have not received download code

I received an apple order confirmation acknowledging my order -- my order will not be shipped -- I was told by a Sr Advisor that I would receive an email with a download code right away - but I've yet to receive it.  Please help - how to I get the download code?  macappstore help is not helping.  I'm desperately awaiting this update as I cannot complete retrieval of my data until I've got current version of Mtn Lion.

The up-to-date program is not really within the MAS's scope for this.

  • ITunes Keeps Crashing Upon Opening

I'm running iTunes on my Dell Laptop with Windows XP. Since I downloaded the last patch from a week or so ago, each and every time I boot up iTunes, it loads the interface then promptly crashes stating "The instruction at '0x009102eb' referenced memory at '0x00000007'. The memory could not be 'written'."
I have been anxiously awaiting a new patch hoping that would fix the problem, but thus far, no luck.

+Nope, the only things I've put onto my iPod is about a gig and a half of music and half a gig of pictures. Only programs/plugins on it are the three games that came with the iPod itself.+
Hmmmm. Okay, let's see if we can narrow this down a bit further.
Let's try an experiment. (It's not a cure, we're just trying to work out if this is a systemwide crash or if it's associated with a specific XP user account on the PC.)
Head into your user accounts control panel and create a new user account with full administrative rights. (There's help documentation on how to do that at the left of the control panel screen.) While you're in that control panel, switch off "fast user switching" in your logging-on preferences.
Now log out of the old account and log into the new account
Launch iTunes. Eventually, you'll be presented with a blank library screen. (That's normal ... your music is off in the other account.)
Try plugging in the nano now. *If iTunes doesn't crash, do not associate the nano with the blank library.*
Does connecting the nano crash iTunes in the new user account?

  • Can't set up Mail with Exchange

Searching has shown that there seem to be a lot of problems with Exchange and Mail, but I wanted to check and see if there's anything else I can do to fix this. My Exchange server works fine with the iPhone and with Entourage, but with Mail it will never sync. I don't want Exchange calendar and contacts, just e-mail. I'm not sure if I'm setting it up wrong - there doesn't seem to be a place to put the domain name? Could that be a problem, or is this just a hopeless quest? I have heard that Snow Leopard should support Exchange, so maybe I will just wait it out. I'm just trying to get switched away from Entourage altogether and I don't like having to use two different e-mail programs. It just seems odd that it works so easily and well on the iPhone but not on a Mac.

Same problem here. I've used Mail with Exchange for quite sometime but recently I can't send using the SMTP server. I can receive and even send to other email addresses on my Exchange network. But not to the outside world. Tried every configuration and authentication possible. Now I read (here in the discussions) that Mail 3.x (I'm using 3.6) is very unreliable with Exchange. I think we are desperately awaiting Snow Leopard. I will certainly not install Entourage on my Mac again that's for sure. I'm resorting to web access for my Exchange folders now.
Anyone have any solution to this?

  • Optimal Quicktime Export Settings For Eventual Burning to Blu-Ray DVD

Hello. We currently have a huge backlog of FCP, FCE HD and iMovie HD projects created in 720p and 1080i formats. While we all await FCP and DVD Pro support of the 1080p Blu-Ray DVD burning, in the mean time, what are the optimal Quicktime Export settings to get best possible rendering of my existing FCP, FCE HD and iMovie HD in preparation for eventual transfer to Blu-Ray DVD for best possible viewing on my large screen LCD TV via Blu-Ray DVD player. I'd like to get to work exporting all my movies into the optimal Quicktime format in preparation for 1080p Blu-Ray.
For example, I have been creating FCE projects in a 1080i 60fps format. Once completed I typically have been exporting a "Full Quality" stand-alone movie. Is that what's optimal for the 1080p Blu-Ray DVD format, or something else? For example, what about interlacing? Should I be "de-interlacing" my outputted quicktime movies for better playback in the Blu-Ray 1080p format? What other things should I be considering.

Full quality sounds like you'll be safe. Keep in mind that WHEN DVDSP gets Blu-ray support, it will be able to do al the encoding itself. I do know that the next generation DVDs are using MPEG4 or VC1 compression instead of MPEG2 like standard DVDs are today. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/H.264/MPEG-4_AVC http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/VC-1 That being said, I don't believe that Compressor has a VC-1 encoder, but it definitely has H.264, so if you wanted to do the encode yourself, I guess you could pick that and be set. I would do some research on the technology behind Blu-ray and then base an encode on what you find. There's also MANY threads on here about this already, so Search is your friend and use it to get more info.
Good luck and don't forget to rate if this was helpful,
    -Brian

  • Single User/Family Pack

Desperately awaiting my new iMacs arrival i cant stop looking up new information about it, When i was looking at the Mac OSX 10.4 Tiger page i noticed theres two different kind, a "Single User" and a "Family Pack" Does anyone know wich one the Newest 17" iMac comes with?

newtoimac, Welcome to the discussion area!
None of the Macs ship with either of those packages.
Every Mac ships with a restore disc (or discs) especially for that Mac. That usually contains more than just OS X. It contains extra applications which ship only that model of Mac.
The OS that ships with a Mac is only licensed to install and use on that single Mac.
BTW, this is the discussion area for the original (oldest) iMacs. If you have other questions about your new iMac, you should post them in the Intel iMac discussion area.

Please identify your notebook/pc with more than the series number. Look at the base/rear/side of the notebook/pc at the barcoded sticker. Post everything you see on the sticker there except the serial number.
Post the installed operating system version ( and whether it is 32 or 64-bit)
    Best regards,

  • How to change gdm tty behaviour?

Somehow the GNOME team had the very strange idea of opening the gnome session on another virtual terminal than gdm.
How can I get gdm to behave itself like the good "old" 3.14?
    Thanks for your help

After the update to gdm 3.16.1-3 it "just" spawns to tty2 and not, like before randomly to any tty.
Still this behaviour is annoying and I am desperately looking for a patch or something. I scrolled through the /etc/gdm/ files but could'nt find anything to change the situation.
