Desperately Seeking Decent Sound

Hello Oh Wise Ones...
I am hearing some distortion and fuzziness on some of my music downloads and want the best quality sound before I burn...Unfortunately, iTunes Help was Helpless and the Tutorial even worse...they don't even recognize the word "equalizer."
Should I have my equalizer set on one particular setting? Do I have to optimize sound for each song based on its category, ie: piano, vocal booster, treble reducer, etc...??
I do have the "error correction" checked in preferences...additionally, I chose the AAC encoder (HUH?) with a high quality setting. It just seems like some songs sound better than others..should I also have the sound control checked. I checked it yesterday, but I thought (paranoia?) that the music sounded worse, so I unchecked it, but I am "assuming" that this action did not undo...
EEK! Need bigger brain...Any help greatly appreciated...Mom is waiting for her compilation of Wayne Newton...(LOL)

Desperately seeking help!! IE Crashes using Swing Applet

Hi,
I've created a grid applet using JTable and Swing in an applet. It runs great with data from a SQL database. I have at least 3 instances of the grid on the same page and other places on the site.
However, Internet Explorer crashes frequently throwing an error "Unhandled exception at xxxxxxx in IExplore.exe (Beans.ocx).
And the behavior is random and unpredictable.
I've been desperately trying to look for help to fix this.
Could someone please, please offer some suggestion?

I agree. Try upgrading your plug-in version to 1.3.1. Keep in mind though that after 1.3.0, Sun changed where the plug-in looks for the root certificate. If you're using a Verisign or Thawte certificate, you shouldn't have any problems. If you're using your own certificate, you'll probably need to import it into the cacerts file in the lib/security directory under the installation directory of your jre.

What is a decent sound card to use with DJ Mixer Pro?

I'm having trouble finding a compatible external sound card to use with my Mac Mini. Specifically, I need one that supports surround sound to use with DJ Mixer Pro. I am currently unable to use the "Preview" function of the program during my sets to ensure proper blending from one track into another. I've gotten pretty good at working around it, but with the proper sound card I should be able to preview a track in the "rear" of the surround sound without disturbing the "front", which plays live to the crowd. Most information I can find on sound cards pertains to home theatre application, which I have no interest in. I also don't need anything too sophisticated as I use the program for local club performances instead of professional production. I would prefer something that connects through firewire to prevent any kind of delay, but most of these seem to be discontinued or expensive overkill, so I hope a USB 2.0 will suffice. Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Mac Mini (power pc) line out - seeking better sound alternative

I have an older (power pc) mac mini connected to a stereo preamp via headphone/line out. Does anyone know if this it a true line out (2volt flat EQ no amplification/distortion) or is there an alternative product that could improve the audio output? i.e TrendsAudio USB Audio converter or Grifin FireWave? I'm looking for a high quality stereo audio signal via RCA connections to an sweet-sounding classic analog stereo system.

The Griffin iMic has a good history for audio out.

SOLVED : HELP Desperately seeking 1.50.6 firmware for my WRT54GS V6.

Hi everybody,
No firmware on this router works for access restrictions but 1.50.6. I had it from the beginning but unfortunately upgraded to newer release and Linksys seems unable to retrieve it (!!!).
The problem : if I want to LOCK some (game) ports on a schedule, I have to AUTHORISE access EXCEPT for those ports, but then any access to the internet is impossible out of the authorised schedule.
More, 2 AUTHORISATIONS lock mutually : if you AUTHORISE Monday and Friday using 2 DIFFERENT rules, any access becomes impossible 24/24 and 7/7, even on Mondays and Fridays! Unbelievable.
Could anyone find this 1.50.6 firmware?
I tried all other releases available on Linksys sites or sent by the customer service (1.50.7, 1.50.9 and 1.52.0). None of them works and they even have some other minor bugs which are not in 1.50.6).
Thanks for your help. I would not have anymore to enable / disable some rules manually every day to prevent the kids spending all their time playing network games (mainly World of Warcraft).

Here is the link for 1.50.6 firmware. It is in German which is not a problem for me. I couldn't find it in French or English. It is proposed for V6 only but it is compatible with V5.1. I use it on a V5.1 now. But it includes some bugs in DHCP (2 computers can be assigned the same IP address), so I don't use DHCP. Linksys' hotline told me they will work on a new release that will work for both access control and DHCP.

Desperately Seeking Genius: iBook G4 won't go past gray screen w/ apple...

Hi AppleHeads. I am looking for some assistance from a nice mac genius. I am trying to fix my sister's computer and am not sure exactly what to do here. Her laptop is an iBook g4 with 1.33GHz Power PC, G4 processor, 512 MB and 40 GB hard drive. She had noticed her computer getting really slow and crashing frequently. She ran some updates this morning and then the computer crashed. Now, it will not turn on past a gray screen with the apple logo. I attempted to trouble-shoot the issue using the guide the computer came with and also ran the Apple Hardware Test. Everything passed -- see the results below. What is my next option? I would like to try and save all of the data as she has not backed up recently (tsk tsk). I'm sure a lot of people post this kind of request, so if there is a solution out there that you know of, please share the information or links. I know that one option is to wipe out the computer and reinstall Mac OS X but I'd like to only do that as a last resort until I can pull the files. Thanks!

is an iBook g4 with 1.33GHz Power PC, G4 processor, 512 MB and 40 GB hard drive. She had noticed her computer getting really slow and crashing frequently.
Was she aware of how full the hard drive was? That can often lead to problems.

the 14.1" 1.33 ran Mac OS X 10.3
the 12.1" 1.33 Mac OS X 10.4
Saving Data:
Does she have the original install disks?
See if it can boot from them or an appropriate installer for the size.
If so then save to an external drive or another Mac in target mode.
If her iBook will go into target mode it would then act like a big expensive external hard drive:

or use disk utility. Depends on what OSshe was running.
She ran some updates this morning and then the computer crashed.
If it happened while the computer was updating after downloading them that would really mess up the OS.
If that's the case it might take a program like Data Rescue II to retrieve data off that hard drive.

I downloaded the
JK 1.2

mod_jk_1.2.5_2.0.47.dll from apache site.(renamed it to mod_jk.dll as instructed). Now the problem is that after making the other settings in server.xml, httpd.conf,workers.properties
My Tomcat does not show any error when i uncomment the following code

AGAIN , here I fail to understand why it is generating the jk_module with forward slash.
(I HAVE GIVEN THE ps=/ property in worker.properties)
Once I add the path in quotes i.e.

I am able to start the apache server. but am failing in the connection test ie. not able to view the examples directory.

I am confused, you need to pick modjk2 or modjk.
I would not use a precompiled modjk2.dll , I have and had security problems.
I would compile it from source. The instructions are in the source package.
If you use modjk, your on the right steps, modjk is more difficult to setup. than modjk2.
For modjk2 all you need is
LoadModule jk2_module C:/Program Files/Apache Group/Apache2/modules/mod_jk2.dll
and the workers2.properties in /conf directory, that's it.
Tomcat 4 and above come 'stock' with ajp workers turned on port 8009.
First make sure modjk is loaded in Apache.
Make sure all 30 lines of error page is uncommented on http.conf
You can do this by http://servername/SOMEbogusAddress
just go to apache page, then try and load a non-existing page
You should see at bottom of page:
Apache/2.0.49 (Unix) mod_jk2/2.0.4

Desperately seeking help for displaying image on button

i wrote the following method to create and display a button with an icon, doesn't work and i cannot figure out what the problem might be and how to fix it, please help me...

Why buttons and labels might not show up the icon?
Either your image is not in the classpath and you are trying to load it as a resource: see

or the file doesn't exist.
To prove that the system cannot load the image use the example in the above link and the url will be null.

Unable to install Adobe products on OS X 10.7.5 - desperately seeking advice!

Hi there, this is my last option so hoping someone can help. I have Adobe CS5 and I cannot get it to install on my mac. I have used a trial before but now cannot get any version of any adobe program to install. When the installer starts up, it gets about 3/4 of the way and then I get the following:
'Installer failed to initialize. Please download Adobe Support Advisor to detect the problem.'
I have done this and it detects that there are no problems. I have since used the Adobe clean up app, ensured there are no left over files from any adobe program remaining and even backed up the entire machine and reinstalled OS Lion (as I thought it was something to do with the ditto command being corrupt - it doesn't seem to be) but nothing works. It is is definitely an adobe related issue and not a fault with the disk as I have tried the CS6 trial but it does the same as the full copy of CS5.
If anyone has any ideas then that would be hugely appreciated as I am beyond frustrated and have spent hours reading forums and trying different approaches.

You can try this to see if it helps: Repair your hard drive and permissions. The first is if you are running Snow Leopard. The second if you are running Lion or Mountain Lion.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your Snow Leopard Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Utilities menu. After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior and/or Tech Tool Pro to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
Repair the Hard Drive and Permissions - Lion/Mountain Lion
Boot to the Recovery HD:
Restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the COMMAND and R keys until the menu screen appears. Alternatively, restart the computer and after the chime press and hold down the OPTION key until the boot manager screen appears. Desperately Seeking Color Management Help: iMac G5

I need some input concerning color management.
I need to find a way to match the output from
a Fuji Frontier 390 printer to the display
on my iMac G5 so that "what I see is what I get".
I use a Canon EOS 1D Mark II to capture, and I make
minimal corrections to levels or contrast in
Adobe Photoshop Elements 2.0, and I find that some
prints look muddy or oversaturated coming out of the
Frontier, even though they look fine on the iMac's display.
I understand the basic concept of color management and I know that I "should" be able to get the display dialed in to match the printer using Color Sync or some other utility, but I need help with the specifics.
A FujiFilm technician explained to me that I could download a printer profile for the 390 from Fuji's website and use that with my image editor but it seems that I am unable to do that while using the "blue collar" Photoshop Elements package. I think that I would have to upgrade to the full Photoshop package (though I'm not totally certain) and I'm really not too interested in doing that.
Could I get some pointers from any of you color gurus out there? Any info will definitely be appreciated!

I didn't mention that I am also a photofinisher and
I am the one doing the printing on the Frontier,
so I know the chemistry and the paper are all
"up to snuff". I also have seen the info on
drycreekphoto.com and they say that I cannot
do what I am wanting to do with my Photoshop Elements
because that program isn't robust enough for it.
The Frontier generates an "upkeep" print with each paper- or emulsion-change; I was wondering if I could employ one of those prints to set a benchmark for my iMac monitor, or if I would go about it some other way. I'm hoping to get some nuts-and-bolts suggestions from someone who has already dialed their iMac in to match a Frontier; I figure there must be a few out there!

Movies won't load onto iTunes! Please help me, desperately seeking advice

Hey all.
I just bought a new macbook and new 60g iPod and can't watch movies on my pod.
I try to move them into iTunes and nothing happens, won't drag and drop, won't work if I try import or try to crtl click open with. Just zero happens. I have also tried converting them with iSquint into ipod compatible movies and still nothing. They just won't go anywhere near iTunes. It simply acts as though nothing has happened.
However, my friend was able to put videos onto my ipod from his old iBook.
So frustrating, i bought this new computer so things would work properly and so far not so good.
I have iTunes 7.0.1 and current ipod updater installed on iTunes
Could someone please help me before I tear my hair out!!

What you need to do is download a movie file converter to convert your movies to mp4 which is the ipod format. I use one called "ipodvideoconverter" just google it and you'll find one that works. Just a heads up though... it usually takes 3-5 hours to convert a 2 hour movie.

I can't find files and folders!!! in OS X Tiger
My partners MacBook apparently run out of memory and when opened again dock moved from left side to bottom nothing on the desktop - apart from HardDisk icon. When looking for the documents and old folders in the spotlight nothing is found. But when I went to Word -> recent documents I can find some. When trying 'save as' they seem to be either in their old folders or those that were saved on the desktop earlier - they seem to lay in a folder "desktop"!!!! How can I update the spotlight so it could find/locate them?! the previous folders and the previous desktop. !!!! very important!!! Where can I locate this folder "desktop" Now I'm afraid I made things even worse cause when I didn't find anything I restarted computer hoping that now that I deleted unnecessary files freeing some extra space it will go back to how it was before!!! it didn't! HELP!!!

To make Spotlight re-index a folder or a volume, do this:
• Open System Preferences -> Spotlight
• Select the "Privacy" tab
• Drag the folder or volume (such as your Macintosh HD icon) into the "Prevent Spotlight from searching ..." box. Wait a few seconds, then highlight it and click the minus sign at the bottom left,
It will take some time, depending on how much needs to be re-indexed, but that is the trick.

Desperately Seeking Help with AIR

Hello,
I LOVE my Air and am so dismayed that it is not working for me. Coincidence or not, it all started after Apple fixed my broken hinge. Up till then, it worked perfectly. Here is what's going on.
When I shut my Air down, it will not restart. The drive starts up, spins but the screen never changes from black. I put a snow leopard installation disk into the optional disk drive and re-installed the operating system on to the hard drive. It then boots up and I have the hard drive working with everything that was on it before I did the installation. If i put it to sleep and wake it up, it works. If I shut it down, I am back to where I started. I've reinstalled it 5 times with the same results everytime. But now it starts up and gives me the flashing apple with question mark sign.
What can I do? I would be greatly appreciative of any help. Thank you so much!

Take it back and tell them to fix it or replace it. I will be sending mine back for a full refund this week.
No way am i putting up with all these bugs...won't start...won't wake from sleep....won't charge when off....on a computer of this price.
This will be my first mac returned for a refund since I have been with them these many years, but this machine is bugged and there is no way i am going to live with endless trips to the repair shop only to see things get worse, especially after surgery. APPLE ARE YOU LISTENING?

Lost iPhone - desperately seeking help

HI all who can assist,
I was robbed of my iPhone4 in Zhuhai, China a few days ago. I am very worried about my personal data etc in my phone. My questions are:
(1) sadly, my phone 3G and cellular data were off at the point of robbery. Two hrs after said event, when I had chance to contact my telco provider, I had also terminated my sim card. It was only then I found out about the "remote wipe" function, upon which I duly activated also. Obviously, the remote wipe couldn't work bec there was no Internet connection. If the robber removes my sim card, and subsequently uses his own sim card from china, would my remote wipe still work? Is the remote wipe function dependent on my sim card, or would it work as long as the phone receives its next Internet connection, whether thru cellular network or wifi?
(2) I believe I may have the 4-digit simple password lock on. Is this secure or is it easily hacked? I was not aware of the "erase data" function after 10 attempts until now, so obviously my phone wouldn't erase the data after 10 (hopefully failed) attempts. So what happens to my phone in this instance after 10 failed tries? When the thief tries to restore the phone using his iTunes there in China, would it restore the phone with all my data/photos etc on it, or would he only be able to restore it to the phone's factory settings only?
I am obviously very very concerned about my personal data etc on the phone, and have given up all hope of retrieving my phone now. Would deeply appreciate if any kind souls out there would help with my queries. As on now, my remote wipe request is still pending and I have not received any confirmation that my phone has been wiped.

Thanks for your response. It has helped eased my mind somewhat.
As I have activated the remote wipe control, I reckon there's no way now for me to "track" the phone as your good self has suggested. I guess i can only await the day will come soon when Apple sends me an email saying that my phone has been wiped :(
You mentioned that as I may have enabled the password code lock (which sadly I'm not entirely sure I did; I'm still in a state of shock following the robbery, and can't rem with certainty if I have not disabled it just the day before, sigh), the default mode would be for the phone to erase the data after 10 attempts. I'm not sure that is the case. Think the default setting for "Erase Data" is off, even if pass code lock is set?
Thanks for your help Jack. It has been an extremely trying week for me. Apart from the loss of the iPhone, I also had my wallet taken, with several thousand dollars in it. All of which i am ok to forgo, but I can only hope and pray that the thief do not have access to all my data in the phone :(
