Desperately trying to get old e-mails back

Hi All,
If you scroll down you will see a thread I started about losing my preferences and permission to my home directory after trying to change the name.
I have now lost all preferences to do with Mac mail and need NEED to retrieve my old e-mails that were all in my system.
I don't use time machine.
Surely they must be saved on my mac somewhere?
How can I get them back?
Thanks for any help!

There are none in Edinburgh unfortunately so it is still a 140mile round trip
Thanks though Sig.
Does anyone else have any ideas of something I could do?
I had set up my account again in Mac mail once I lost my preferences
Surely these e-mails must be stored somewhere on my mac?
They are all related to my business so I hope to get them back asap.

Yes, I think I have transferred everything over to the new computer, I just cannot figure out how to get Thunderbird to recognize it.

  • How can I reinstall my mail accounts and get all my mails back?

My internal HD died a few days ago . Fortunately I did a Time Machine backup a couple of hours before it happened .
Now my MacBook Pro is back from the repair center, with a brand new HD and Mac OS 10.6.8 installed (the system I had) .
But how can I get all my mails back? Indeed I used Mail to manage many mail accounts, and some of the inboxes or local mailboxes contain messages that are a few months if not years old. I coud reconfigure my accounts, but then I only get the mails of the last few weeks downloaded (those that were not erased from the pop3-server). Is there a possibility to get all the mails (including outbox) as it was before the crash?
By the way, I'm also still looking for my address book and my iCal calendars !!
    Thanks for help.

I have a MacBook Air, bought in 2010 or 2011.  It is running OS 10.6.8.
I have an iMac that is the same age as my MacBook Air.  My iPhone is 2nd or 3rd generation.
None can support "the Cloud".  I use gmail and my iPhone and both computers are all synced.
I can't get email on my new iPad that does use "The Cloud".
    Please help.

  • Trying to get old data off a g4 tower

Hi- I am trying to get old data off a g4 tower using macbook and firewire but I am not succeeding. My old monitor doesn't seem to work. Any suggestions greatly appreciated. I also have a Gdrive if that might work.

    Here's another method.
Buy one of these hard drive adapters.
    http://cgi.ebay.com/USB-2-0-SATA-PATA-3-5-2-5-Hard-Drive-Adapter-Cable-/14041077 1759?cmd=ViewItem&pt=LHDefaultDomain0&hash=item20b122592f
Remove the hard drive from the G4. Using the above adapter, connect the drive to your MacBook. Copy the files you want.

My magazine last month is still working ok - but this month's version has just started crashing for some reason.

We can't know. You have not provided any system info, not told us what version of ID you use nor provided any specifics about the document like images, color profiles, fonts, paragraph styles and what have you...

my internet connection is incredibly slow - I know it is not the fault of the modem as other devices are fast. This article was suggested to me as a solution. I think they were just trying to get me off their back. Anyone else experience this?

If Safari is getting very slow:
(Presumably you regularly empty your Safari cache by deleting the following file:
    Home/Library/Caches/com.apple.Safari/cache.db
    and clear your History)
Adding Open DNS codes to your Network Preferences, should give good results in terms of speed-up as well as added security, (including anti-phishing and redirects) (Full information about Open DNS is here:   http://www.opendns.com/home-solutions ) and further independent information can be read here:
    http://reviews.cnet.com/8301-13727_7-57338784-263/free-dnscrypt-tool-enhances-ma c-web-security/?tag=mncol;txt
    and here:
    http://www.macworld.com/article/1146064/troubleshootdns.html?t=234
If you are using a single computer: Open System Preferences/Network. Double click on your connection type, or select it in the drop-down menu, and in the box marked 'DNS Servers' add the following two numbers:
    208.67.222.222
    208.67.220.220
(You can also enter them if you click on Advanced and then DNS)
Sometimes reversing the order of the DNS numbers can be beneficial in cases where there is a long delay before web pages start to load, and then suddenly load at normal speed:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS2296
If your computer is part of a network:please refer to this page: http://www.opendns.com/start/best_practices/#your_network and follow the advice given.
If you use a Router, make sure it has the latest firmware installed.
One reason for a slowness in page loading may be the 'DNS Pre-fetching' feature of Safari 5.x as is described here:
    http://support.apple.com/kb/TS3408?viewlocale=en_US
You can cancel DNS pre-fetching by going to Terminal and typing:
defaults write com.apple.safari WebKitDNSPrefetchingEnabled -boolean false
You have to restart Safari for it to take effect.
If Safari seems to hang for ages:
If you have a lot of tabs open and/or a lot of pages running Flash, Safari can sometimes 'hang', requiring a restart of Safari. This can often be inconvenient, and as it is rarely Safari itself that is hanging but merely one of its plug-ins, usually Flash, there is a way using Terminal to restart the plug-ins (without restarting Safari and losing your tabs) by quitting the WebPluginHost process:
Open the Terminal from the Utilities folder in /Applications and type
    killall -9 WebKitPluginHost
Note that this command kills all Safari plug-ins, not just Flash. All plug-ins should start back up when you reload the page.
Then go back to Safari and refresh any pages that were using the Flash plug-in. This also fixes the Beachball of Death. Try this whenever Safari gets slow or freezes. The later versions of Flash 10.1 onwards appear to have improved the situation somewhat, but haven't completed eliminated it.
For this and other reasons Apple switched their websites to HTML5 in January 2011:

  • Trying to get "old" dvd to play - app that created it requires classic os.

the subject line pretty much says it all - i have a dvd from 1997 and i'm trying to get it to play on either my g5 desktop or my macbook pro (both running 10.5.2). if it helps, the version of the application that used to launch the movie back in the classic days is listed "runtime 2.1.1" and there's a "media" folder on the dvd with a bunch of '.wav. files, a big file that ends in '.dbb' and two files with a suffix of 'in1' and 'in2' respectively.
when i try to open it i get a message saying that it needs classic and the environment is no longer supported. similarly, when i try to copy it by using a third-party app, i get a message saying 'source not found'.
    any ideas?
    thanks.

Wait do you use the drive designed for the Xbox in the Satellite P100?
Hmm, Im surprised that this device is compatible with the Toshiba notebook.
Anyway, as far as I know you need a special DVD software player to play and watch HD-DVD on the notebook.
A simple WinDVD does not support the new HD-DVDs.
By the way: I know one Toshiba model that was delivered with the HD_DVD drive.
It was a Qosmio G30 DVD HD Model.
I found in the driver download section on the Toshiba site a new update of Nvidia GeForce Go7600 graphic card driver Version 8.3.2.7
But I dont know if its compatible with you card...

  • Can i get my live mail back as it was before I downloaded thunderbird

I downloaded thunderbird thinking I would have another email provider. However if took over my live mail and deleted the messages I had classified and stored as inbox subfolders. I need my life mail back as it was.
    I have windows 8.1.

They are just moving your Thunderbird question to the Thunderbird forum instead of where you asked it.
When someone has an answer for you they will post it.

  • I downloaded a new version of WinZip. It highjacked my Firefox home page. I keep trying to get old settings back but there is all this stuff including Bing as home page. What do I do?

I have tried dragging and dropping MyYahoo into the home page and it resets to Bing every time I log back in.

    Hi Mnor,
You should take a look at the Knowledge Base article [[How to set the home page]]. Your homepage might have been changed by a particular site. Sites like MSN, Yahoo, etc (and it seems winzip) have been know to ask to become your homepage.
There are steps in that article to reset your homepage preferences to default. I would try that first to clear out any strangeness. If that works, you can try setting your homepage again to your personal preference.
If that doesn't work you should look at the article [http://kb.mozillazine.org/Preferences_not_saved Preferences not saved].
Finally, your issue may be because you've been hit with some [https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/kb/Is%20my%20Firefox%20problem%20a%20result%20of%20malware?s=malware&r=0&e=sph&as=s#w_how-do-i-get-rid-of-malware Malware].
    Hopefully this helps!

  • Help! How do I get all my mail back?

Basically I just went through **** in a handbasket, trying to transfer my email accounts from one webhost to another -- from Globat to GoDaddy, if the names can help.
Well, I'm still waiting for my accounts to come online -- but I've discovered something truly disturbing: I eliminated the accounts from my Mail program, in order to enter all the new server info -- POP info, new passwords etc.
But now I find that with the elimination of the old accounts, also went everything in their inbox/outboxes! That means I somehow just lost about 1,000 emails that I have received for two accounts, and also the ones that I sent from those two accounts! They just don't exist any more, so that means I've lost all my correspondences, email addreses -- everything for at least the past year.
HOWEVER, I did a backup onto my Time Capsule of this whole computer (MacBook Pro mid 2012) about 6 days ago, and when I go into Time Capsule, there they are -- all those messages, in both my inboxes and outboxes.
However, when I click "Restore," it says "Restoring 987 messages" in my present inbox, but then when it's finished so-called "restoring" them, the inboxes are the same as they were before -- empty.
Now all those messages are on my Time Capsule -- yet when I'm IN Time Machine it won't let me do anything with the messages. Yet it also will not restore them to my present inboxes.
They exist -- on the Time Capsule. But how do I either get them back into my Mail program of now, or somehow save all of them another way in a form that at least will preserve their contents, plus all the addresses etc. etc.?
I don't know how to download them from my old webhost's server, and even if I could, those messages only go back a couple of months and are mixed up with a ton of junk mail. Very soon, my old webhost (Globat) is going to be terminating my account, so they won't exist on Globat's servers either.
How do I get those messages from my Time Capsule to my laptop? I don't mind if they're just one long text file -- I just need them for all the email addresses they contain, and there are some that have personal significance as well. Isn' there a way I can import them all into a new folder in Mail, called, maybe, "Old emails" or something like that?
Help! I didn't even consider this when I went to change webhosts . . .

    Okay, here is the deal:
    1) I open the "Mail/inbox" for my mail account. Since all the emails aren't there any more, I now click on "Enter Time Machine."
    2) Now I select the last date that I backed up my Mac.
    3) All the emails that WERE in my inbox on that date show up in Time Machine.
    4) I click on "Restore."
    5) It says "Restoring 987 files" (all the emails that WERE in my inbox on Dec.6th and which I want to get back)
    6) My present day inbox reappears and none of the "Restored" emails are there.
Question: at which point do I Control-click  on all the emails? While they are showing in my Time Machine inbox? (That does not work -- nothing I do does anything -- I just get the error alert sound).
    7) when I click on "Restore" it again says "Restoring 987 files," I am back in my present-day inbox and nothing has been restored.
So exactly at which point to I control-click? Do I select all my previous inbox items while in Time Machine and control click? If I do that, nothing happens at all. And if I move back out of Time Machine, nothing has been restored.

  • My @me account has vanished off my iPad and iPhone and been replaced with @icloud. How do I get my @me mail back or how do I view it?

Can anyone give me some advice. My @me.com email account has vanished and been replaced with @icloud.com and I am at a loss how to view my email or put the account back onto my iPad/iPhone. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

You can manage your email accounts in
    Settings>Mail, Contacts, Calendars
However, you should still get all of your emails, contacts and calendars on your @icloud.com email account just as you do on your @me.com account.
But if not, you can add and remove accounts listed above.
