Destination for media files changed unexpectedly

My iTunes media files are stored on a NAS. Recently, for the second time, I have seen (annoyingly after importing new music files) that the address specified for the iTunes Media folder location in iTunes Preferences has somehow changed to point to the default value on the internal disk. The first time this happened I thought that it might have been due to the NAS not being accessible when iTunes was started (though I don't find it acceptable that the address is changed without any warning). As far as I know, this wasn't the case when the problem arose for a second time. Both times the problem was on an iMac running Mavericks. I haven't had the trouble (as far as I know) on my older iMac with Snow Leopard.
Has anyone else had similar trouble or an explanation for the problem?

As soon as I had posted this I found this other thread that probably explains the problem: https://discussions.apple.com/message/18703603#18703603
Any other tips gratefully accepted, though. I still don't find it right that the address of the media folder is changed without any warning.

  • Multiple destinations for one file?

I'd like to have two destinations for one file - ie, local and on an FTP server. I ask because I've had the FTP fail, and can't find where Compressor stashed the render locally. Failing that, can I at least test the FTP connection (like in AfterEffects) before I commit to an hours-long encoding job?

Too Bad compressor doesn't have more than 1 destination, but if you want to find the temp file, the files are normally kept in /var/spool/qmaster , you can reveal this from the finder using the GO > GO TO FOLDER command, then typing in the above path. Of course you can change this temp space in the qmaster preferences in the System Preferences pane to any other folder you like.

  • How Can I Search for Media files by Length?

I want know how can I search for media files (mov, mp4, flv and movie files in general) by their length?
If this search function is confirmed as definitely not possible on the OS, I would appreciate someone recommending app that might be able to perform such a search?
    Many thanks

No possible way. Because the files may be enoded with differing codecs, compression, etc., you can only sort by file size, not the 'length' of the movie files.

  • Installing DM on a second computer for Media files

So I use a Storm on a BES and I would like to be able to access DM from my home computer to transfer Media files. Other than the Media Sync program, is it OK to install DM again on my home computer and have it sync so I can transfer files and use the DM program to "change" my files so I can use them on the BB?
    THanks for the help.

Yep. You won't be syncing any contacts, calendar, etc., from your home PC to the BB, so you should be fine just moving media to and from the media card.

  • Default application for media files reverts with a fresh boot

I want my media files to open with VLC as the default application. I do the whole work-around: I select the file, I go to "Get Info," I choose "Open with: VLC" and I select "Change All" to use the application to open all files of the same type. That all works. And it works with other files of the same type.
If I restart my computer, or if I shut it down and start it up again, Quicktime is the default again. I have been able to permanently set VLC by using "Open with"- "Other" - and then selecting "Always Open With." But I don't think this is a great solution.
Is there any way to make "Change All" stick, even after a fresh boot?

Rebuild the LaunchServices database by running this one-line command in the Terminal (/Applications/Utilities/)—copy & paste:
*/System/Library/Frameworks/CoreServices.framework/Versions/A/Frameworks/LaunchS ervices.framework/Versions/A/Support/lsregister -kill -r -domain local -domain system -domain user*
Then, try the Get Info->select Open with VLC, click the Change all button, and restart.

  • Change destination for Temporary File cache?

I am using latest FCS versions with Compressor 3.0.2. I am exporting a 1-hour HDV file from FCP for HD DVD disk using the H264 Multipass 10.3Mbps setting. I found to my cost that a temporary file is generated which is about 2x the final file size (i.e. about 8.5GB) and this is saved on my startup disk at user/library/caches/temporaryitems. I didn't have that much space so my 30-hour rendering was aborted.
Now I value the space on my startup disk! OSX and FCS has already been hogging huge chunks of it!!
Anyway, my question is does anyone know if it's possible to relocate this temporary file to another disk?
    Thanks

    No.
UNix apps store their tempfiles preferred on the 'system partition' of your harddrive.
on my setup. ALL libraries (= the Gigabytes of iTunes, iPhoto, iMovie...) are external.. free your int. HDD is best advice ..

  • My iTunes purchased movies will not sync to the New iPad(3) even though I have an HD version and an SD version. Are there specs somewhere for media files?

I have purchased a few movies in iTunes on the MacBook Pro and after dowloading, I am not able to sync them to my new iPad. I look at the contents of the download and I have an HD file and an SD file, I assumed it would sync the SD file automatically if it cannot handle the HD on the device (although it should be able to).
What are the different reasons a movie won't sync to iPad (frame rate, file size, definition, etc.) and what are the options to make these files compatable with my iPad? Can I rip them again or run them through a conversion utility? Is there a setting in iTunes somewhere I am missing?
Is there a post somewhere thatr already covers this? If so, I can't find it. Would be great to have a baseline of what can be handled by device so I can figure out how to make my media compatable.

the spcs page on this site state which video formats the ipad supports
I'd suggest converting your old videos to one of those formats
handbrake is a free program which does this for you
itunes used to be able to too when I right clicked incompatible media but don't see the option any more
or maybe it only show when one right click incompatible media and currently my lib don't have any
about the music then it's odd what formats are they?
if they are acc protected have you tried to remove the DRM this can be don using itunes as
apple don't use DRM for music any more

  • Create destinations for pdf file

I would like to create in Frame a destination that appears in the pdf as a destination, I would think this would work:
but in the pdf file, it doesn't appear, is there another way? Are my settings correct?

FM adds a prefix to the named destination in order to make the destinations absolutely unique. Depending upon whether the file is part of a book or a single file, the exact string will vary.  For a standalone file, it will be "M8.newlink.<your newlink text, e.g. target_device>" or if it's part of a book, "M1.8.newlink.target_device> where th digit after the "M" refers to the files position in the book.
You either have to add the prefix to the PDF links that you manually want to create in other applications that target the PDF you're creating or use Shlomo Perets' TimeSavers (see: FrameMaker-to-Acrobat TimeSavers ) to have the prefix stripped.

  • How do I chose helper application for media files

I have Adobe Acrobat and (of course) iTunes.
However, when using Safari (or any browser really) I prefer to open pdf:s in Preview and mp3:s in Quicktime. But I have no idea how to change this.
Some mp3-links are opened directly in Safari and that's fine, but some calls upp iTunes and I don't want that. It clutters the iTunes library.
Pdf:s are opened in some kind of Adobe-plugin which is really slow. Even in Intel. I don't want that.
Long ago these things could be changed in the preferences of the web-browsers but not anymore. How am I supposed to do this now? How are media links redirected to other applications in OS X?

    Hi Torsig,
Probably not what you want to hear, but they all played within Safari for me.
Can you check this QuickTime settings?
System Preferences -> QuickTime -> Advanced -> (MIME Settings...) -> MP3 - MPEG layer III movies and streams -> MP3 playlist (if this is not enabled, enable it)
If you do make a change, restart Safari to pick up the change.

  • SAP-XI, permission of the instance.properties file changes unexpectedly

    Hi forum,
I have XI installed in HP-UX,
the permission of the instance.properties file (/usr/sap/<SID>/<instance name>/j2ee/cluster/instance.properties) in my XI system (installed in HP-UX), changes automatically, and hence the server starts giving problem like, JCO error while message-mapping, etc,
can u tell me how the permission changes on the fly,
I mean to say, in proper condition we keep it as rw_rw_rw, but it changes to rw_ ___ ___,
    pls help,

    Hi Sudeep
I just checked on two systems. It looks like the permissions should be:
    sidadm > ll j2ee/cluster/instance.properties
    -rw-r--r--   1 sidadm     sapsys        3669 Nov 25 12:41 j2ee/cluster/instance.properties
Can you please check if <b>sidadm> umask</b> returns 022?

  • Displayed icon for audio files changed with snow install - how to I restore

After installing 10.6, the icons displayed on audio files (aiff, mp3, etc.) became a black square with a music symbol in it when it should be the default application icon or quicktime icon. The icon in the upper left corner of the info window is correct, but the hideous square displays. How do I restore to the correct icon?

I have the same problem. I produce a daily podcast ("Mister Ron's Basement") and I have almost 1500 episodes on my hard drives in both the original recordings (aiff files done with Sound Studio) and mp3 versions. They used to have different icons, and even though the aiff files will still open in Sound Studio automatically, they all have the same black square icon. Used to be, at least you'd get an icon that had the word with the file type on it, but no more. I have changed many of the back ones with Candy Bar, after sorting them by file type, but every new file I create, I have to go to get info and change the icon by hand. Not very professional, and a waste of my time. Can I expect sound icon differentiation to be returned to the Macintosh Operating System at some time in the near future?

There are quite a few different settings that you can choose from when converting a RAW file to a DNG. Without knowing what settings you set up in LightRoom there's no way to tell why your images aren't importing properly.
Roughly speaking, a linear DNG is one where the first part of the RAW conversion process (called debayerising or demosaicing) has already been done by Adobe.
