Detach BT Keyboard/Mouse, attaching to another...t

I have my Bluetooth keyboard and mouse attached to my PowerBook. But now I have a new Mac Pro, I want to connect them to the new system. Any idea how do I detach it? Without disabling the bluetooth, just in case if I need to use some other device with the PB.

If your new Mac Pro also has bluetooth, it's simple: go into bluetooth preferences on your PowerBook, and delete the keyboard and mouse devices. (You can always add them later). Then turn Bluetooth off on the PowerBook.
Now, turn your keyboard and mouse on near the Mac Pro, open Bluetooth prefs, browse for devices, and add them in.

  • 2nd keyboard+mouse attached through USB to a beige G3 MiniTower?

My main working desktop machine is my G5 Quad.  A 1998 gray G3 Mini Tower, upgraded to a G4 by means of a PowerPC G4 card is networked via Ethernet cable through a router and runs Mac OS 9.2.2.  The keyboard and mouse are ADB.
The Mini Tower, when in use, drives one of my dual desktop monitors attached to the G5 Quad, both of which have built-in switches for two computers.  When the Mini Tower is not in use (95% of the time), that monitor resumes its normal role as my secondary monitor.
    So far so good.
Complicating matters a bit, a QuarkXPress Passport dongle is installed between the end of the keyboard cable and the computer ADB port and is necessary for QuarkXPress to be activated.
What want to do now is to connect a USB keyboard and mouse cable from a KVM switch (or whatever it's called) so that I can use my regular wired keyboard and mouse for my three desktop computers.  The Quark dongle would continue to be attached to the ADB port of the Mini Tower.
Whether the Quark dongle will work in that setup or not will be easily determined by trial and error, no problem there.
    • So, my question to the awesome hardware experts here is simply whether I'm running any risk of damage to my hardware by trying such an arcane combination of USB and ADB connections.
Obviously, the cause for this conundrum is that Quark cannot supply a USB dongle any more, and the price of the required two current versions of QuarkXPress Passport is a whopping $3,000 to cover my eight working languages (have to buy two different versions, while my old version of QuarkXPress Passport covers them all in one single version).
I've tried ADB-to-USB adapters with no success,
It would really be nice to have a single keyboard and mouse for two or three working desktop computers: the Mini Tower, the DP MDD G4 and the G5 Quad.
    Thanks in advance.

Thanks for the comprehensive response, Allan

Does that mean you've tried a PCI adaptor card?....
No, not a card.  Just in-line adapters of various brands (e.g. Griffin), the pigtail kind where the ADB cable connects at one end and it has a USB plug on the other end to be plugged into the computer.
    http://www.amazon.com/Griffin-2001-ADB-iMate-Universal-adapter/dp/B000067V8L
My Beige G3 Mini Tower already had USB1 and Firewire409 cards when I bought it used in 2002, presumably added in by the original owner.
The QXP dongle is currently connected between the ADB keyboard cable and the ADB port on the Mini Tower.  It works fine, there of course.
When I tried the various ADB-to-USB in-line adapters, I had unplugged the ADB keyboard and was trying the adapters between the ADB keyboard + ADB QXP dongle and the USB ports on the USB1 card.  That never worked.

In fact, with the special startup key combos needed to troubleshoot the "Old World ROM" Macs like Beige, it was a VERY good idea to leave an ADB board connected but tucked out of the way, available if you needed to do maintenance and troubleshooting startup key combos like Safe Boot, starting from an optical system disk, or resetting the PRAM....
That is tremendously helpful information, Allan.  Thank you so much!

  • [Trick] Use Keyboard + Mouse from Xorg to control another Xorg session

So you have two computers sitting together,  you don't have a kvm switch, and using two keyboards and mice is just plan annoying!
X2X is the solution. This program allows you to use your mouse and keyboard from Computer A on Computer B.
    From the man page
x2x  allows the keyboard and mouse on one ("from") X display to be used to control another ("to") X display.
    How to make it work?
Allow TCP from xorg on both systems
    Edit /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc and change
    exec /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp
    to
    exec /usr/bin/X
Computer A = computer that has the keyboard and mouse you want to use
Computer B = computer that does not have the keyboard and mouse you want to use hooked up to it
On Computer B run the command
    xhost +ComputerA
Where ComputerA is the hostname/ip address of ComputerA
This allows ComputerA to connect to ComputerB's xorg server
On Computer A run the command
    x2x -to ComputerB:0.0 -west
Where ComputerB is the hostname/ip address of ComputerB
Now on ComputerA you should be able to move the mouse left, off the screen, and be able to control ComputerB!
I use this to control my laptop using my desktop's mouse and keyboard. It's a lot easier than switching between my desktop keyboard/mouse and laptop keyboard/mouse!

I have used x2x for some time before I started using Arch, but recently I decided to start using it again to control my laptop from my desktop box. I have installed x2x on the laptop. However, when I do
    # ssh -X laptop 'x2x -west -to :0'
    I get:
X Error of failed request: BadWindow (invalid Window parameter)
Major opcode of failed request: 25 (X_SendEvent)
Resource id in failed request: 0x400001b
Serial number of failed request: 21
Current serial number in output stream: 21
I have tried following your howto, but I seem unable to start X with tcp support. I have changed /etc/X11/xinit/xserverrc as you instructed, but when I start X and issue
    ps ax | grep X
from a console, I still get:
    1670 tty7 Ss+ 0:15 /usr/bin/X -nolisten tcp vt07 -auth /var/run/slim.auth
Can you tell me what I'm missing? Are these at all related?
    Thanks!
Today I was looking into this and got working very fast using this thread. Are you sure you restarted your X server after changing xserverrc? Are you sure your display is at :0?
    Use
    echo $DISPLAY
on the terminal to find out. Also you need x2x installed on both machines.

  • Can I control two Macs with one keyboard & mouse simultaneously?

I'm presently the operator and head audio tech for a major Off-Broadway show. I'm running the show on Ableton Live 6 through a Mac Mini, using a MOTU 828mkIII as the Firewire audio interface to the console. "Show control" is basically straight music playback, plus arming and disarming loops, triggering sound FX cues, and stopping and starting playback. The show has been exceedingly stable, no real reason to worry - but the fact that I don't have a redundant backup system concerns me. Theoretically, I can use our Denon CD players to run the show off of discs I've burned, but it's only viable for me because I know the show; a sub running the show would be up the creek - and if we hit a snag and run out of loops, forget it. Furthermore, those of you who've worked with Live know that in a performance based/show control situation, you can remain in an audio loop indefinitely, without any worry of a CD running out of prerecorded loops. (This is a specific reason why we're using Ableton for this show - the music can keep "vamping" until automation and rigging give me the clear to proceed.)
Considering that I'll be taking some time off this summer, I don't want this to be a concern for my sub(s), so I've charged myself with the task of building a redundant backup. Problem is, I'm not sure how to do it.
What I've been looking at is a dual Ableton Live/Mac Mini/Firewire interface system. Basically, to duplicate what's running the show presently, and have it running in tandem while the main playback system goes to the house - but for both to be controlled by only one mouse, keyboard and screen, so there's no delay in the event of a crash. If one fails, I send the audio from the backup into the theatre. There would be no disruption of playback, except for the operator`s response time in switching to the backup`s audio output.
Software like Synergy and Teleport let me share a single keyboard, mouse, and screen over two or more computers - +but only control one computer at a time+. And I've looked for KVM switches and USB "splitters" but they also seem to be toggle devices between one or another computer - which leads me to think I may have to network the two...
Any ideas are appreciated, even the obvious ones, as I may have overlooked some or assumed some to be out of the question.
That`s basically it - *simultaneous realtime* control of two computers from one keyboard and mouse. Both Minis performing the same task at the same time.
Is there software/hardware that can do it, or can I network the backup as a "slave" that mimics the master?
    Thanks.

Perhaps you could setup a parallel processing network:

  • How to use one keyboard, mouse and display for two PC's?

hey guys, right now i'm using a mac mini and also another Windows PC tower. whenever i want to switch between them i need to re-plug in my headphones/keyboard/mouse/display and this is getting annoying. i've been using a usb hub for the mouse and keyboard so it's not as difficult to setup. is there anything out there that'll allow me to switch between them more easily?
    what are my options?
    thank you

If both are on your intranet, try Synergy.
I personally use the Wormhole.  You can drag between desktops.

  • Bluetooth Keyboard/Mouse/Trackpad won't automatically connect after installing Boot Camp

    Hey guys!
Another peculiar thing happened to me today with my 3-week-old maxed-out 2012 iMac (other than it kernel panicking when I powered it down the other day...did I mention this was 3 weeks old?).
After installing Boot Camp which I will never do again, my iMac (on the OS X side) no longer recognizes my stock Apple Wireless Keyboard, Magic Trackpad, or Magic Mouse automatically, until I press a button on the keyboard and wait 5 seconds, click the trackpad and wait 5 seconds, or click the mouse and wait 5 seconds.
(The Windows 8 Boot Camp side pairs with the devices immediately after Windows boots, which leads me to believe that the bluetooth devices are defaulting to look for Windows.)
One of my huge fears I had when considering purchasing an iMac is that the Bluetooth devices wouldn't immediately connect. Being a power-user with former Mac notebooks and working understandably fast having owned a web development company for 8 years now and not having to worry about Bluetooth device pairing, I'd like to think this fear is substantiated. But after first use (before installing Windows 8 with Boot Camp Assistant) it functioned normally and the iMac would automatically discover my peripherals and connect them by the time time computer turned on. I also had no trouble holding the Option key on boot to select a boot device....
Now, ever since I set up Windows 8 on the Boot Camp partition and paired the keyboard/mouse/trackpad to Windows, the Mac side completely ignores the keyboard/mouse/trackpad until I click a button on each.
I'm trying to keep it together but this is raging me out.
I went into Windows, immediately unpaired the 3 peripherals from windows and now use a wired keyboard/mouse with Windows (yay, desk space!), deleted the items entirely from the bluetooth panel, then booted to Mac and did the same thing. I then re-paired the devices to the OS X side andddd...no go! Still doesn't find them automatically. I am extremely upset by this and can't seem to fix it.
To summarize, my two issues are:
    A. The iMac in OS X does not automatically recognize my bluetooth peripherals until I click a button on each and wait a couple seconds for them to pair.
    B. I cannot hold Option to select a boot device (or choose Windows/Mac for example) because the computer doesn't recognize the keyboard until OS X boots and I press a key.
Please...for the love of god...someone help me, and stop me from formatting my entire computer over this issue.

I don't have a logitech mouse, but is it possible that the mouse is going to sleep during the reboot, and is thus unavailable when the OS is looking for it?

  • New Mac mini won't see old Apple Keyboard/Mouse

Just got a brand new macmini, got my apple display plugged into it and working, turned it on. It recognized my apple wireless mouse for a couple clicks, then when I got the screen to enter in the serial number, it wouldn't recognize my keyboard. And now it doesn't recognize the mouse either.
I brought home a Logitech wireless keyboard/mouse combo from work and was able to setup the server that way, but it still won't recognize my Apple brand keyboard/mouse that worked fine on my old PowerBook. I've rebooted several times.
    Any ideas?

    Hello mc:
The devices, if paired with another system, need to be deleted from the Bluetooth preferences (you need to disconnect them in the BT preference pane and then delete them). Then a restart should begin the connect/pair sequence.
BT devices may only paired with one system at a time.

  • Use a MacBook as a combi Keyboard/Mouse/Monitor?

Hi, I was just wondering if it is possible to use a lets say MacBook Air as a monitor, keyboard and mouse/trackpad for another Mac via thunderbolt or something?

Check out a program called Aurora it has a snooze feature and you can also use the remote that came with you macbook to put it to sleep I've been using it for about 3 weeks now and love it. http://www.metaquark.de/aurora/
And another thing Its a free piece of software unlike the Alarm pro which is free to try and cost money Aurora is Free.

  • Keyboard/mouse variably function

My keyboard & mouse stop functioning unpredictably. Problem persists after repairing disk, permissions;also tried taping KB cable under battery, no luck. Can use USB KB & Mouse. All other functions seem OK. Machine is > 3 yrs old. Should I chuck it? Is it likely an OS problem? I also must attach USB KB to launch Windows from Bootcamp (ie. the KB won't work before Mac OS launches). Thanks for any clues, suggestions. I've had the problem intermittently for 6 months or more, but it is now more persistent.

  • No Bluetooth keyboard/mouse Option Anymore?

I was just configuring a 20" iMac, and noticed we no longer have the option to choose the wireless keyboard/Mighty Mouse.
When did Apple remove this option from the iMac? I see it's available with the MacPro, but not the iMac.
When I bought my current iMac 2 years ago I configured it the the Bluetooth keyboard/mouse.
Is the Bluetooth keyboard and/or mouse not working well with the Intel iMacs?

That's kind of what I'm thinking as well...maybe they realized it costs them more?
Another possibility is that the BT keyboard/mouse has some issues with the Intel iMacs they haven't been able to resolve...so they pulled that option as a way of "discouraging" sales of iMacs configured that way?

  • Windows via Bootcamp keyboard/mouse not working???

I have a 15" Macbook Pro and have installed Windows 7 Ultimate via bootcamp with all the correct apple support drivers but suddenly my keyboard/mouse will not work at the sign in screen for Windows at all. Up untill this point I could restart my mac and resign in through the windows partition and easily play my favorite games. Recently I tried signing into windows but at the sign in screen I cannot use my mouse nor my keyboard. Please do not tell me to reinstall windows unless that is the only solution because of data not backed up. Is it a driver issue, how can that be because it worked fine for weeks? Please get back to me as soon as possible!!
    Specs:
Processor 2.6 GHz Intel Core i7
    Memory 8 GB (Raam) 1600MHz DDR3
Graphics NVIDIA GeGorce GT 650M 1024MB
Software OS X 10.8.2 (Mountain Lion)

If the mouse and keyboard are working under OSX then it can't be a hardware issue.
    You could try:
starting Windows in safe mode to see if the mouse and keyboard work. (Press F8 repeatedly just before Windows starts to boot to bring up the Windows boot menu.)  Safe mode loads a set of basic drivers to just get Windows running and no more.
Another thing you can try is unplug the mouse and re-plug it in after a few seconds while at the login window.  The USB ports may re-detect the mouse.
Try booting from a Windows PE CD or USB stick if you have one.  If the keyboard and mouse work under Windows PE then it's probably a driver issue under your Windows install.
Did you install anything under Windows before this happened?

  • Virgin user here...Help! KVM monitor, keyboard, mouse switch

    Hi,
I have a new mac mini that I currently have connected to a Gateway monitor. It works great, however, the pins on the cable are starting to bend. (from switching back and forth between PC and Mac) Found out I might be able to connect Mac mini, and PC to same Mac keyboard, mac mouse and PC monitor. I bought a 2 port KVM switch and tried to connect it.. blew my mac keyboard up. Was it a coincidence or is there a problem here.
I have a really small workspace, that's why I would like to connect everything to a single monitor, keyboard and mouse. I'm also on a very limited budget.
What can I do? Thanks for your help! : )

    Thanks !
I realized I can just plug the keyboard, with the mouse attached to it, in and out of the mini USB port and the Apple 17" monitor built-in USB port. The only drawback is that the mini will wake up from sleep. The G4 doesn't even wake up, only upon hitting keys or clicking the mouse.
The only advantage of a switch would be if the mini doesn't wake up by switch operations...

  • FASTER RESPONSE FROM keyboard/mouse actions?

1.42 GHz PPC G4, 1GB DDR SD Ram (4200 rph HD)
How can I DECREASE computer RESPONSE action/time to day to day activities?
It is not clear what 'slows down' software/computer responses and causes the spinning balls in relatively simple actions.
My usage is not 'heavy' nor 'complex'; Typically Mail, Safari, FoxFire, Word 2007, TextEditPlus,
QuickTime (music on occasion). Occasionally Adobe Reader and Photoshop Elements. Safari often more spinning balls than others.
By turning OFF USB an external HD with switching Power Supply that helps avoid delays. But what
    else can be done?
I choose to stay with Tiger 10.4.11 - and do NOT chose to go to a later version of the OS.
Is there a "faster response" time for later versions of the Mini?
Given that my first Mac was a 400k floppy machine with MacWrite and MacDraw - in relative terms we I do now is like a supersonic jet... but mine needs a booster -
    ideas??

Your computer's list of items in-use, per Activity Monitor, tell you
what is running and while these are Active, give an idea of how
much of the computer's configuration (hard/soft-ware) resources
are being used. Also, the Activity Monitor can tell you the load
of Virtual Memory and actual Chip RAM demands of Apps.
The interface of USB mouse and keyboard can act slowed-down
when the computer resources are running loaded. Even with up
to 75% hard disk drive free-space (unused, except for system
use as Virtual Memory and application temp or swap space) my
computer with an 8GB HDD can also, at times, have a slow key-
    board and mouse.
If you have more than one browser window open, or run Office
and some other apps at the same time, the overall load on the
Mini G4 (with the 1024MB max RAM installed) can be critical.
The virtual memory write/read cycles to the hard disk drive
increase, and this will also add to a lag when there is a rush
of demand on diminishing resources; plus, a tired old HDD.
Do you occasionally log-out of the main user account and log
back in? This can sometimes help free-up RAM and other use
of system resources, without having to restart the Mac.
How often do you restart the computer, & do you leave it to sleep
when not in use, or do you power it off? Just curious.
As the computer gets older and the hard disk drive more worn,
it may be running warmer and slower; less efficiently and tired,
this lag may be more apparent and point to a need to replace
the internal hard disk drive with a new, larger & better spec unit.
In some instances, there had been a controversy over which was
faster to the computer's processor and RAM (system bus) - be it
a 400 Mbit FW400 external hard disk drive, or a hard disk drive
on the computer's own bus. Some tests, machine series dependant,
showed a variable; with some FW400 enclosures running slower
than the internal computer's hard disk drive.
I've found both slower and faster (depending on the computer)
using an external HDD in FireWire400 enclosure, vs the native
drive; with even a 7200 RPM 250GB HDD running thoroughput
slower than an internal 5400 RPM 80GB drive; but not always.
Do you use a powered USB hub with the peripheral items your
computer is attached to, when running the Mini? For mine, the
better setup was to use powered USB hubs, with the keyboard
plugged directly into the Mac (for startup keyboard combo access)
and the mouse plugged into a port on the powered USB hub.
To note, if there is an issue with this set-up, to troubleshoot the
powered USB hub and have a spare keyboard & mouse available.
Usually, an over-whelmed USB port in a computer will give you a
warning message implying an under-powered state exists, & near
the total possible output of voltage to the USB port is approached.
The USB bus can only support a limited ceiling; there also is a limit
on FW port loads, and devices exceeding that amount will affect all
items on their respective bus. (Example why self-powered is best.)
When you went to the AppleJack download page and clicked on
the link to get the download to start, does your browser show you
a Downloads list and ask you where/how you want the item saved?
    I have mine set so I can see any/all items, choose to install them;
& have the .dmg or other image file on the desktop where I can
see it. (In 10.5.8, the default is in a Dock location for Downloads.)
How the browser is set to handle downloads can affect results.
If your computer has been acting oddly, there may be some
kind of file corruption or data corruption causing issues in it.
This link, in Firefox, goes to the download item for AppleJack
directly, in my browser, the default is set and asks me what
I want to do about it. The main option is to accept it and then
it will download to the desktop (Tiger 10.4.11) as a .dmg. It
will not open, and does not display some kind of picture:
    http://sourceforge.net/projects/applejack/files/AppleJack/AppleJack-1.6/AppleJac k-1.6.dmg/download
You should make a good backup, a bootable clone of your Mini's
entire hard disk drive contents, test it well, and then consider a
course of maintenance and repair of the internal hard drive; or get
a new replacement hard disk drive and upgrade the Mini with it.
Only 5 interruptions here, in the course of this reply to the question.
(Could be worse; some days they can be hours long; or weeks.
There is a story, non-computer related to the reader, going on.)
{Spindown Fix software has been tested in Mac OS X 10.2.3 only.
The older software suggested, may help if the external is going to
sleep if used as a boot startup volume; since once a external boot
    FW goes to sleep, the computer may not see it when it awakens.}
The Mini is sort of like a portable computer, in that the hard drive
gets a thorough work-out and it has limited upgrade capabilities.
So, for a hard disk drive to last 3 to 5 years, is lucky run. At least
    the unit isn't being hauled around while asleep, as a 'Book may;
and isn't as likely to be dropped from the lap while it's running...!
    +{Yes, it's a long post. Sorta like a Totem.}+
    Good luck & happy computing!

  • Dumb question; Keyboard/Mouse malfunctrions?

Alright, so I'm working on a MacPro(very new to Mac...only been a few days)...and already I've managed to mess something up. I have a feeling it's very simple, but I can't fix it from my Mac so I'm on another computer.
It seems I cannot type on my keyboard (I've tried unplugging/restarting,etc.) and when I DO type on the computer, it goes to shortcuts (m for Minimize); and also, my mouse isn't fully functioning either; it will click some objects. And anytime I click something in the "dock" it opens the main folder for the application, rather than the application itself...I have tried to work in the Universal settings/keyboard/mouse settings, and still; to no avail.
    Please help me.
    Thank you so much

Sounds like you have a bad keyboard. Stuck Option, Ctrl, or Cmd key, maybe. Have you tried unplugging it for a while.

  • Control a computer without keyboard, mouse and screen

    Hello,
I have installed ARD3 in a MacMini Core Duo and it works perfect.
After that I remove the keyboard, mouse and screen I start the mini just with the power and network cable but I can't log into it. I guess there has to be a way to control the machines in that way.
    Regards,
    2pacy

I think the reason you've received no replies is because nobody understands the question you are asking.
You stated "I have installed ARD3 in a MacMini Core Duo and it works perfect." and then followed it up with "...but I can't log into it."
What did you install on the mini? The agent? The administration software? If you installed the administration software, the agent is not turned on by default. This means that even though you may have been able to run the application, you won't be able to connect to the machine from another computer.
We are happy to help, but we need to understand the question being asked.
