Detail loss crop v. zoom iphoto11

I have a question about apparent loss of detail in cropping. I zoomed to part of a picture (a small part) to see if it was sharp and when zooming confirmed that it was, I then cropped the picture to a slightly larger size, but the cropped picture was not as sharp as the zoom, even the zoom was tighter than the crop. Why is this so? Am I doing something wrong?

I can confirm this. If the Crop tool is used the cropped picture appears blurred, however, zooming any amount on the cropped image results in a fully detailed image. There is no actual loss of detail in the image, navigating away from the cropped image and back again results in a detailed view. It is as though the cropped image does not properly render.

  • Yikes! Severe detail loss from LR to PS3???!!

I am a professional photog who has been using PS for years and Lightroom since it came out. I just ran into a problem that makes no sense to me. I'm running the latest versions of Lightroom and CS3 on a MacBook using the most up to date version of Leopard.
I was just working on a black & white conversion in LR on a raw (cr2) file. I needed to do a bit of cloning work in PS, so I opened up PSCS3 through LR. I did my cloning, without creating any layers, saved it with LR adding the "edit" to the file name, took a look at the resulting image, and noticed the loss of detail - critical detail - in the psd file. The psd file, by the way, is 16 bits, in prophoto color space, and 300 dpi. No loss of detail should result from that.
The same result occurred when I saved the cr2 file to dng format, opened the dng up in PS3 (the details were still there when the file opened up in the raw edit window, opened the file for editing in PS3 and then saved the file as a psd - the detail was gone again.
Here are two screen shots that show the loss of detail:

    Detail in raw file:

Does anyone have an explanation for this?? I never noticed this before. . . . And, no automatic adjustments are enabled in either LR or PSCS3
Thanks in advance. I hope there is an answer. Otherwise, this is going to be a show stopper for me. I must have detail for my photos to work.

Are these 100% zoomed crops? If so, It appears you must have accidentally scaled down the image somewhere in the process.

  • Cropping to View or Cropping to Zoom Level

Just wondering if this is already an option and I just can't find it... I work with very large images, and having a television background, I am always looking for the Wide/Medium/Tight shots - for example, getting three different shots from the originals. When I am zooming in to make corrections or retouch, I find myself saying "Now THAT would make a GREAT image cropped exactly where it is". Instead of dragging out the Crop Tool and risk the image "moving" from the exact zoom level or view I have it at, is there a way to "CROP TO VIEW" or "CROP TO ZOOM LEVEL" with just one click that I am missing, or should this go to the Photoship Wish List? Thanks, all!

As far as I can tell that’s currently not possible, so unless someone else has more insight here you might want to post in the Feature Request Forum.
While the zoom-level is accessible for Scripting purposes the image’s position in the window is not (to the best of my knowledge).

  • Getting flicker at top and bottom of screen - should I crop or zoom in?

Hi all, this is related to another thread I have here but I wanted to ask specifically...what is better...cropping or zooming?
I have just finished editing a long production in 16:9 and have been monitoring the edit process on a 16:9 television.
When the finished product is watched on the 16:9 tv, there is no flicker evidentat either the top or bottom of the screen.
When watched on a 4:3 television in letterbox mode, naturally the top and bottom edges are exposed and this presents some flicker at the top and bottom extremeties on some shots.
I can get rid of this flicker on the edges without re-editing time-consuming scenes by either zooming in a fraction or cropping the finished video top and bottom by a factor of 4 using the motion settings.
I have monitored the cropping method on the 16:9 screen and you cannot see it until it is cropped by a factor of 5, and of course on the 4:3 screen the cropping method will only mean there is slightly more black top and bottom on the letterbox effect.
I guess zooming in to get rid of the flickering will mean the quality of the picture degrades a little so cropping would probably be best.
Is this your opinion as weel?
    Thanks in advance.

I guess zooming in to get rid of the flickering will mean the quality of the picture degrades a little...
Yes, any picture re-sizing degrades the original.
... so cropping would probably be best.
Yes. To avoid losing anything, you could always only crop the shots from the camera that has the flicker (might take a while).

  • Crop and Zoom for picture-in-picture

I would like zoom into the part of a video and crop it so when I re-size it for picture-in-picture, I can see the only cropped area. Is that possible?
    Thanks,

I am a bit confused. Do you have PrPro CS 5 / 5.5, or PrElements? The reason that I ask is the post to the PrE forum HERE.
As I said in that thread, the answer is "yes," but we need to know exactly what you wish to do, so that we can tell you how to do it.
    My questions:
Now, before we go into a lot of details, that might not apply, let me see if I can understand exactly what you want to do.
You have a Clip on the Video 1 Track in your Timeline. You want to zoom in on a part of that Clip. Am I correct on that?
Now, you talk about a PiP and also cropping. What do you want to crop?
Can you describe the PiP treatment, that you plan on using? For general PiP treatment, you would place the PiP Clip onto, say Video 2, and then Scale and alter its Position to suit. Is it the PiP Clip, that needs cropping?
With those answers, and any more details that you can furnish, we can tell you how to do, what you desire.
    Good luck,

  • Crop and Zoom

I want to crop and/or zoom into a corner of a clip in my project, and then slowly zoom back out to show the entire clip. But I can't figure out how to accomplish this. When I use the crop or clip effect, it remains for the length of the clip. To give you an idea of what I mean, there is a car that starts on the left side of the clup and goes out of frame after a few seconds, so I want to avoid showing the car by starting with a zoomed in view of the right side of the clip.
How can I zoom in on portion of my clip, then back out again?
    Thanks!

As John Nash points out, your Zoom and Pan can be easily done via Keyframing the Fixed * Effects>Motion>Position (Pan/location), and Motion>Scale (Zoom). Be sure to read his graciously furnished link completely, and if you do not understand any terms in it, and cannot find a useful definition of any, drop back with any questions.
As John notes, many/most Effects can be Keyframed to change over time. There ARE some exceptions, but not that many.
    * Fixed Effects are those that are automatically applied to all Video Clips (Volume is a Fixed Effect, added to any Audio), and will always be there. Motion, contains Scale and Position, the two that you will use here. One adjusts these most easily and effectively from the Effects Control Panel, which is invoked by hitting Edit Effects in the Effects Tab, with that Clip Selected. Other Effects are first added from the Effects Tab.
Steve's tutorials and articles are great resources, as well, and come highly recommended, along with John's link.
    Good luck, and happy editing,
    Hunt
PS - as Keyframes are so very useful and powerful, and can be used in so many cases, I urge one to learn the concepts. Though time might need to be invested, it will pay great dividends later.

  • Video detail loss on importing to project?? (CS3)

    Hello everyone.
Admittedly I'm far less experienced with Premiere than I am with Photoshop/Illustrator, but this has been bugging me a long time and I finally sat down and tried to figure it out... and didn't.. XD As far as I can tell it has to do with codecs and decoding?? But that could very well be wrong.
I'm using various clips from low quality cameras, older digital cameras capable of capturing some video or cell phones, etc. So the image quality isn't stellar to begin with, nor is the brightness. Now for some reason, when I open these types of dark videos in Windows Media Player, and turn up the brightness a bit (with the default WMP tools) it's an ugly approach (I've watched the creative cow tutorial on not using brightness & contrast) but it get the dark bits to a point where I can at least see some of the detail that is too dark to make out otherwise.
The problem being, when I bring the video into Premiere and use fast color correcting, or levels, or brightness, or shadows, I cannot bring that same amount of detail out though it's plainly visible in WMP????? I can't get it to show in VirtualDub or other players either. I can take a screen shot from WMP bring it into Photoshop and make it look quite nice with all that shiny detail coming to the surface, but that's 1 frame of thousands!
Why would something lose this detail immediately upon adding it to the project? It's just not there anymore, no matter how carefully I brighten the image (even watching the YC waveform). Is this a codec problem? Can I force Premiere (I'm on CS3 still by the way) to decode it differently? The reason I suggest codecs is because VirtualDub, MediaPlayerClassic, and many other players all have clearly not the same ammount of detail coming through even in frame 1 when compared to WindowsMediaPlayer, and I don't even like WMP!?
With such a pro tool as Priemere surely this is Human (me) error.
    Please help!
    Thanks,
    Malk
    edit:
I took a quick mpeg with my old cybershot that very clearly illustrates my problem:
^^^brightened in WMP, screenshotted, raised contrast/lowered brightness in Photoshop
^^^tried several methods in Premiere, couldn't get anywhere reasonable, screenshotted, raised contrast/brightness in Photoshop.
    /shrug

The image size are 1600x1200 or larger and should be adequate in size.  Anyone know how to improve the quality of the stills? I feel it may have something to do with the program resizing/ downsizing the pics.
You are correct. This is a case of bigger not being better. I would suggest resizing in Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, or similar, to the Frame Size of your Project, or just slightly larger, if you need to pan on any, when they are zoomed out to full size.
This ARTICLE will give you some tips on resizing.
    Good luck,

  • Premiere Elements 13 - crop then zoom work - output does not

New to Premiere and so probably not understanding some concepts (probably applying idea around images incorrectly to videos).
I have a an old clip I'm trying to test with - so for starters it's in 640x480, AVI format from an old Canon digicam
There is a bunch of junk on a table on the left side of the clip and I can trim some of the top as well. What I've tried:
Use Crop to remove the areas I don't want.
Then check the "Zoom" box and the remaining area "fills" the visible space in the editor - perfect so far.
But when I try to export the results to a mp4 file the results look nothing like the editor. I have some of the area from the left cropping back, and cropping i did not do on the right has now occurred so I've lost some of my actual content.  I'm hoping this is a simple thing for people who use this regularly - I've had no luck on Google
Thanks in advance if you can offer a newbie some tips.

A lot depends on your source video. Some video formats are less accurately displayed than others.
What model of camcorder is your video coming from and what format and resolution is it?
What are your Premiere Elements project settings, as listed under the Edit menu?

  • Video cropping and zooming issue

I'm new to this product and couldn't find my specific issue (or at least didn't recognize it).
I was using downloaded video to make a simple music video (to experiment with on the trial version).  So I have the first clip in the sequence and then I add a second clip and after working with it for a few minutes notice that in the sequence viewer the video is enlarged and the sides are cropped so I'm only seeing an enlarged picture of the center.  The zoom was still on fit though.  I don't understand why the video was automatically zoomed and cropped by Premiere and when I delete the clip and put it back in it does the same.
    Any insight?
The first clip in the video  was a  640 x 360  While the second video was 1280 x 720 and both had square pixels (1.0)
    They were however both WMVs.

The fact that the Zoom level is set to Fit means that the view in the Program Monitor is zoomed to fit the panel, not that the clip is scaled to fit the sequence.
If your second clip is larger than the first, and you place the second clip into a sequence that is sized for the first, then you are naturally only going to see a piece (such as the cropped center in your case) unless you scale the second clip down. Or use a bigger sequence.
If you want the clip to automatically be scaled to fit the sequence, then you can turn on the Default Scale To Frame Size preference. (See this for a video explanation of that preference.)
In general, you scale with the Scale property of the Motion effect, not with the Zoom setting in the panel.

  • Crop and zoom a video

Hey, i want to know how to crop a section of my video, and make it so the cropped section fills up the page, how can i do this?
    STICKY-CROSS

    Standard is like this:
Then in the effects control panel set the motion/scale to 300% and you end up with:
If you still do not understand how to do this, it is time for a basic education and extensive reading of manual, help file and watching tutorials. This is very basic.

  • Crop and Zoom in PS?

In LR when you crop a photo, it enlarges the cropped photo to the original size. Is there a way to do this in PS CC?

So you just want the image to fill the screen after cropping?  There is no option to do that directly from the Crop tool, but Ctrl (Cmd) 0 is a simple shortcut to make it happen after using the Crop tool.  Is that helpful?

  • Loss of pinch zoom functionality. On newspaper sites

LA Times, NY Times, WAPO  articles viewed in Safari on iOS devices  have recently  had the pinch-zoom functionality removed. Apple has confirmed this. The layout of the pages look similar. This is not a mobile version - same version has it on MBP.

    Hello Machine Master,
Thank you for the reply. Unfortunately, clearing the browser cache and cookies did not fix the problem.
One additional piece of information I'd like to add - the problem only occurs on the mobile version of these sites. If I manually switch to the desktop version of Google or Wikipedia, then zooming works fine.
Since you are unable to reproduce the problem, I'd suspect it might only be an issue with certain phones or the LG software. I'd be interested to hear if others with this phone (and not running a custom ROM) have encountered this problem.
