Details of Flash player dropping frames

Hello,
I'm referring to something like Youtube, where the player has already buffered a number of seconds,
yet frames are still dropped, resulting in a kind of jerkiness to the video.
It happens whether low res SD, or high res HD is played - no difference.
It happens whether acceleration is on or off - no difference.
it happens even though Computer resources are in the low range, as verified
by Task Manager.
I read somewhere that the Flash Player may be programmed to drop frames
if it detects it's falling behind the audio.  Can this be confirmed?
If it is true, why is it falling behind?
Do you really need a super computer to play 480p video at 30 fps?
I played a 7 minutes 854x480 (16/9 aspect ratio) and I got roughly
200 frames dropped (as shown by Youtube's "stats for nerds").
That's approx. 1 1/2 %.
Thanks for any enlightenment.
Dave

To help troubleshoot we'll need the following system information:
Operating   system

When reporting issues with video or audio, it's also helpful to get your system hardware and driver details.  Instructions for finding this information can be found here:

Finally, sometimes video and audio problems are caused at a lower level and not directly related to Flash Player.  I recommend trying both of the links below to see how they perform.  If the problem exists with both, then Flash Player is most likely not the culprit as the HTML5 video link does not use Flash Player when playing.  You can verify the use of HTML5 by right clicking the HTML5 video and looking for the words "About HTML5" at the bottom of the context menu.

  • Flash player drops frames with playing live h264 frames

    Hi
i have been tryin to get to a adobe representative for a long time now regarding this but unfortunately no one responds fast enough. I am facing a terrible issue. When broadcasting h264 live video from a flash based encoder client i notice severe frame drops on the playback end no matter what player i use. It even happens if i use fms development server on my own system. Video becomes smooth if i add a 1 sec buffer to the player. but then the video is no longer live.
So my question is , is theer somethign wrong with h264 encoding in flash player or thats the way it is suppose to be ? at zero buffer  frame drops are severe.  Sample config :
    320 x 240 @ 24 fps @ 90000 bps @ 100 KFI @ 3.1 level @ baseline profile.
I sincerely some one at adobe to respond. There are many stranded questions on this topic on the forum and on the web already.

The CPU usage is 2-6% on the i7 920 vista 64bit computer. The audio doesn't seem to be dropping. Some more clues that might help you help me
    - The quality of the video doesn't matter, 360p drops frames just as often as 720p or 1080p.
    - The dropped frames still occur even when the video is completely downloaded and replayed without any buffering needed.
One thing that does fix the dropped frames is completely disabling my sound card in the windows playback sound options. This also fixes the second computer's dropped frames which only has onboard realtek audio. I have tried using a Creative PCI sound card and the built in realtek sound but they both behave the same. The latest drivers were installed for both.

  • Flash player dropping frames.

Flash player has been dropping frames while watching youtube on two vista computers that I own, one 32 bit and the other 64 bit. Every few seconds the video drops a frame or two which is very annoying. As a troubleshooting step I dual booted windows 8 64bit and it plays youtube videos perfectly without dropped frames. I own an older dell that runs windows XP and it doesn't drop frames so I'm guessing this might be a flash + vista problem.
    > No frames are dropped when using the youtube HTML5 player on the vista computers.
    > Uninstalled and reinstalling flash doesn't fix the dropped frames.
    > Dropped frames occur in IE, Firefox and Chrome. IE and Firefox were both tested in Windows 8 and neither dropped frames.
Please help me fix this problem.

  • Can the Flash Player do frame accurate seeking when using the HDS protocol?

    Hi all,
... and thanks in advance for taking the time to respond. I've been playing with different media serving protocols, and I have a couple of questions.
    1. Can the Flash Player do frame accurate seeking when media is served via the HDS protocol? (I know it works  using RTMP)
    2. If it does work, is it impacted in any way if I also use Access DRM-Core or Access DRM-Professional? (I want stronger DRM protection than simple Access Protected Streaming)
    Thanks!

Hello Simona_83.  Try downloading Google Chrome (it's free).  Install Flash Player via Chrome, and use Chrome as your browser.  This is the only thing that worked for me after over a month of trying everything under the sun to get Flash Player working again.  You'll have to use Chrome as your browser in order to have Flash Player capability, but so what.  It works.  If it works for you as it works for me, you will have Youtube again; you just have to access Youtube via Chrome.  Don't waste hours of your life trying to get Flash Player to work any other way.  Believe me, I wasted hours upon hours off and on over the course of a month trying to get Flash Player installed and operating.

  • Flash Player Drops Out Internet Connection of Other Programs

I'm having terrible problems with Flash Player X.  Everytime I connect to streaming video using Flash Player, the movie plays OK for about ten minutes then Flash Player doesn't allow me to connect to the internet with other programs of other windows and drops out any programs already connected.  I can either surf the internet or watch a movie but not both.  I've tried re-installing the software, done every configuration of my system and firewall that I know how but still can't get rid of this problem.  I've tried all the suggests in other threads but to still no avail.  I could use some help on this issue.

No, Verizon doesn't automatically share your wifi connection with strangers.  The cable company that serves Long Island is now doing what you described.  They have guest wifi automatically enabled on their latest routers but FiOS does no such thing. If you would like to try to get some help with your varying speeds from fellow users here, start another thread and provide more details.  Include what part of the country you're in; if you're measuring your speeds via a hardwire (Ethernet) connection or wifi; and what model router you have. I can tell you that with the rare exception of a few hours outage we had a few days ago, I consistenly get over 80 mb/s up and down on my 75/75 plan.  That's the way FiOS should work and does for me. BTW, you should be able to go to the setup pages for your router in your  router and see what devices are connected to your local network.  Sign in at 192.168.1.1 on on the home page you'll see "My Network" where all devices connected will be shown.

  • Export Issues: Green and black flashes and dropped frames

    Hello,
So I've been having in issue in the last week exporting videos in Adobe (CS5, Premiere 5.0). It's happened both in AME and direct exports from Premiere. The sequence settings match the footage settings (1280x720 (1.0) 23.976fps MTS files). I'm using a mini matrox mxo2 hardware accelerator to speed up my export times. The sequences start with 5 seconds of a still image with a simple Title laid over it in Video two (the person's name, city etc. that is the focus of the video) which then dips to black into the footage. Everything plays back fine but after I output the sequences within the first 5 seconds (while the still img is up (a .jpg) there are flashes of green and black as well as dropped frames. It only happens a few times but it does happen in each video, only while that title is on the screen.
I've made hundreds of similar videos with the same export settings, same sequence settings, same footage settings. I know because it's a lot of the same cameramen and I've made templates for my projects, sequences, and export settings. This has never been an issue before this week.
I've tried mining Google and forums for an answer but can't even find other people having very similar problems.
Any help on ideas to troubleshoot this would be much appreciated and let me know if you want any more info from me.
    Thanks!

Thank you for the reply J_Heffernan.
So my understanding of the issue is more clear. The green fields is from a rendered clip, not from playback.
    Please try the following:
    - in control panel, go to user accounts, and locate your account, and confirm its UAC level is all the way down, reboot if required
    - if you downloaded the Matrox driver with another browser, besides IE, then redownload it again, with IE. Once completed, right click the file, go to properties, if there is a message stating its blocked, click the unblock button
    - uninstall the MXO2 driver, reboot and reinstall it
    - go to http://www.intel.com/p/en_US/support/detect?iid=dc_iduu let it scan to see if there is an intel chipset driver update availalble, and install it, reboot
    - lets try with a brand new project - select matrox.avi as your capture mode
    - select a matrox HD/SD sequence - try HD 1080i 29.97
    - give a new name
    - place colour bars on the timeline and streach it out
    - now do a file export, use a Matrox h.264 option, and let adobe media encoder export it
    - after it is completed, how is the playback?
Typically you can have premiere and media encoder open at the same time.
    Regards

  • Why does flash drop frames ??

I have been conducting some tests and am totally lost as to why flash based broadcasting drops frames.
The genral formula for calculating bitrate is :
    bitrate = Width x Height x FPS
Now if this value is lower than  Camera.bandwidth then why should flash still drop frames ?? Any assistance/ideas is greatly appreciated.
I have checked with FMS performance tab: bytes in is well bellow Camera.bandwidth as well , but still flash drops frames... why??

oh! you dont have to be an engeer to answer that. I reported you because i saw you had 306 points. Which means you had to be a serious guy giving a serious answer. If you had read my question (you may want to read it again just in case).. here is the answer to it that i could find on my own. There is no need to get things complicated, god created things simple eniough
    Refer to http://help.adobe.com/en_US/FlashPlatform/reference/actionscript/3/flash/media/Camera.html
You will see that when we apply setMode funtion to request a width, height and fps, flash will request the device for closest native settings of the camera.  I am pasting it here so everyone can read:
By default, Flash Player drops frames as needed to maintain image size. To minimize the number of dropped frames, even if this means reducing the size of the image, pass false for the favorArea parameter.
When choosing a native mode, Flash Player tries to maintain the requested aspect ratio whenever possible. For example, if you issue the commandmyCam.setMode(400, 400, 30), and the maximum width and height values available on the camera are 320 and 288, Flash Player sets both the width and height at 288; by setting these properties to the same value, Flash Player maintains the 1:1 aspect ratio you requested.
So as you see its a simple thing, nothing so complicated as NETWORKING, ALOHA , TCP/IP etc etc . If you wil notice all the situations i have stated, it clearly implies frame drop happens regardless of any bandwidth settings as soon as i go over a certain resolution.
    Haver a nice day! Cheers

  • Can I distribute my software with embedded Flash Player (NPSWF32.dll) ?

I'm developing a program that use QtWebKit to display flash content. Adobe Flash Player need to be installed in the computer in order to run my program.
I've found a way to ship Flash Player with my program by include a NPSWF32.dll(not a flash player installer) into my installer.
Is this method break the Adobe Flash Player License?

Here is details about Flash Player distribution.
    http://www.adobe.com/ie/products/players/flash-player-distribution.html
There is a line mentioning in this way "Licensee must use the installers as-is without modification."

  • Flash player h264 live streaming dropping frames

    Hi
For some reason i noticed Flash player h264 live streaming is dropping frames very rigorously when streaming to fms 3.5. There are no frames dropped on client camera end. Dropped frames correspond to  NetStreamInfo. The output is thus very jerky. This happenbs no matter what settings i use (176 x 144 @10fps). CPU usage is well below 50%.
I noticied that if i stream the same to Red5 1.0 i do not get any frames dropped. The output is perfect as expected. Can some one please help out on this.

Also i can confirm that the encoder used in FMLE and flash player 11.1 or above is not the same. The medium quality preset in FMLE uses "
    Bandwidth           300kbps
    Quality                Dont know
    fps                      20
    keyframeInterval  5sec
If i use the same settings in flash player 11.1 i get heavy framedrops and bad playback no matter what quality i use. So this confirms that both encoder are not the same as adobe claims.
On the other hand i sure would love to know why setting bandwidth to 0 creates a smooth stream without framedrops. I will request someone from adobe team to answer me here.

  • Flash player 11.0 flickers/doesn't draw whole frames

    Hello,
I'm currently running Flash Player 11.0.1.152 on Arch Linux 64-bit, with nVidia driver 285.05.09. I'm coming across a lot of Flash videos where terrible flickering occurs. The frame rate is very good but it seems like some of the frames themselves are only partially drawn (you can see a screenshot here**) which makes the whole video flicker terribly. I've also seen it places like here (particularly the loading screen, but you can also see it to a lesser extent in the video on the front page). Places like Youtube and Blip.Tv work fine.
Fiddling with hardware acceleration or quality settings doesn't fix it, however simply opening the settings box has a temporary effect: the flicker disappears entirely for as long as the box is there. Upon closing the settings box, flicker immediately resumes. Scrolling the box mostly offscreen resumes flicker, too.
I primarily use Firefox 7.0.1, but there's no change when using Chromium.
After upgrading to 11.2 the video plays silky smooth, however I've found the beta is still too unstable for general use, so I can't simply use that. Is there something I can do to fix 11.0 while waiting for the beta to stabilize?
I've also included a paste dump of my GLXinfo if that will help in any way.
    Thanks for your time!
**Note that if you wish to check the video itself, the flicker isn't immediately apparent from the start, however clicking the first red dot that skips to Part One will drop you straight into a flickery part.
EDIT: I found out that when my video card is forced into its highest performance setting, flickering is greatly reduced though doesn't disappear entirely.

What is your operating system, version & edition?
    What is your web browser?

  • Dropped frames on Flash playback

so we've heard the grumblings from Steve Jobs about the inefficiency of Flash and that's why Apple won't let it work on iPhones/iPods and apparently the iPad. Yesterday in a web interview someone from Adobe conceded that Flash uses more resources when running on a Mac than a PC. After this long intro, my question. I have a white 24 inch iMac (2.16 Ghz) and for the past several months I have noticed it struggles to play Flash content in full screen mode (audio is fine, but video drops frames and sometimes lags slightly behind audio). I have noticed this on Hulu and other sites that use Flash for video. There are no issues with youtube, iTunes or other full screen video applications. Anyone else experience this issue? Any work around?

    HI Michael,
Try uninstalling then reinstalling a fresh copy of the Flash Player plugin.
    Uninstall Flash
    Install Flash
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Empty Cache. When you are done with that...
From the Safari Menu Bar, click Safari / Reset Safari. Select the top 5 buttons and click Reset.
Since you are running Snow Leopard, make sure Safari is running in 32-bit mode, not 64. Right or control click the Safari icon in the Applications folder, then click: Get Info In the Get Info window click the black disclosure triangle next to General so it faces down. Select 32 bit mode. Also, (in that same window) make sure *Safari is NOT running in Rosetta*.
Web pages now include a small icon or 'favicon' which is visible in the address bar and next to bookmarks. These icons take up disk space and slow Safari down. It is possible to erase the icons from your computer and start fresh. *To delete Safari's icon cache using the Finder, open your user folder, navigate to ~/Library/Safari/ and move this file "webpageIcons.db to the Trash.
    Then repair disk permissions.
Quit any open applications/programs. Launch Disk Utility. (Applications/Utilities) Select MacintoshHD in the panel on the left, select the FirstAid tab. Click: Repair Disk Permissions. When it's finished from the Menu Bar, Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac. If you see a long list of "messages" in the permissions window, it's ok. That can be ignored. As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done. Quit Disk Utility and restart your Mac.

  • Flash dropping frames in OS X Lion?

Recently I've noticed that Flash Player seems to skip frames in games and apps all over the place. It doesn't seem to be a performance thing, I have plenty of memory and CPU free, and if I'm trying to play something that has an FPS counter like http://andysaia.com/blog/starlingPunkTilemaps/starlingPunk-example.html I get a constant 60 frames per second. Every so often, Flash will intermittently drop some frames, causing movement to be "jumpy". I don't remember when I first started noticing this, it might have been after installing OS X Lion or something else, I'm not sure. It's also worth noting that when I try to run the same stuff on my Boot Camp Windows partition on the same hardware, all the movement is silky smooth. (Also, the linked example is using Stage3d, but I'm noticing the frame dropping everywhere, not just apps that use it.)
    Specs: Macbook Pro 13-inch
    Mac OS X 10.7.4
    2.7 CHz Intel Core i7
    Intel HD Graphics 3000

So, Lion, anyway you get it, won't have Java intalled, right? It doesn't matter if you get a new Mac, if you upgrade from 10.6.8, or if you clean install Lion?
    Correct.
No new Mac will bring Java anymore? It's due to security?
Well, sort of. It's also due to an agreement with Oracle that they would be responsible for Java 7 and higher, but they weren't quite ready when Lion was released (it's available now).
And what about Java preferences.app? If I try to use it, it ask me to install a Java enviroment...it's just a normal thing, right?
    Yes, it's normal.
Is it really more safe to have it uninstalled?
Not today, but there are known vulnerabilities in the current version that someone might figure out how to exploit in the same manner as Flashback and a couple of other malware developers did with the last version.
What can I miss if I don't install it?
You will be told if you need it. There are a few applications written either partially or completely in Java (CrashPlan is probably the most popular). Some web sites still use it. A few banks and someone said they could not get into their AT&T account without it, but I've not had any problems. I read some statistics that slightly over 5,000 of the top 1 million web sites contained Java code, so not very many.

Answers in this forum have shown different things have worked for different people.
For some clearing YouTube cookies and the cache solved the problem. For details of how to do that see https://support.mozilla.com/kb/Deleting+cookies and https://support.mozilla.com/kb/How+to+clear+the+cache
Others had to go a step further after deleting YouTube cookies and block YouTube from saving cookies. In the Tools menu select Options to open the Options window. Go to the Privacy panel and make sure it is set to "Use custom setting for history". Click the Exceptions button, type in http://www.youtube.com and click on Block
Another option is to disable hardware acceleration for Flash. To do that right-click on a Flash video, select Settings, go to the first tab of the settings for the option to enable/disable hardware acceleration for Flash. This is something recommended by YouTube for those having problems - http://www.google.com/support/youtube/bin/answer.py?&answer=1209379

You can only use apps downloaded from the App store, not via a browser. There is no Flash for any iOS device including the iPod.

  • Flash player 10.1 seeks an additional frame (not accurate)

Wondering if this is a known issue? our engineer has done extensive testing to prove that the behavior is correct pre 10.1. With AS2 and AS3. With FMS 3.5.6 and 4.0. With smart seeking and not. With smart seeking even the player realizing that it seeked to the wrong time! Unfortunately we cannot tell our customers to not upgrade to 10.1. Many of them already have 10.3
sample files mentioned in this report can be found here
    http://d1yb9lkqglrfzu.cloudfront.net/PlayerSeekTestAS3.zip
Adobe Flash Player 10.1 and later – netstream.seek in a fms rtmp stream seeks an additional frame
    Product:
    Adobe Flash Player
    Version:
    10.1 or later
    Platform:
    PC
    Operating system:
Windows XP SP3, Windows 7 Ultimate
    Summary:
Seeking into a rtmp stream served by Flash Media Server using netstream.seek(offset) will seek an additional frame when played in Adobe Flash Player version 10.1 or later.
    Description:
There is a sample video player included (PlayerSeekTestAS3.swf) to help reproduce this issue. The player allows loading a stream, playing/pausing it and seeking to a specified time or frame. For testing purposes there is also included a burnt-in timecode mp4 file (timecodeSample.mp4), but the issue can be observed using one of the sample files included in the Flash Media Server 4.0 installation (like Adobe/Flash Media Server 4/applications/vod/media/ sample1_1500kbps.f4v).
    Steps to reproduce:
Open the sample player (PlayerSeekTestAS3.swf) in Adobe Flash Player version earlier than 10.1 (tested using versions WIN 10,0,2,54, WIN 10,0,12,36, WIN 10,0,22,87, WIN 10,0,32,18, WIN 10,0,42,34 and WIN 10,0,45,2).
Write a valid rtmp stream url in the url text box of the sample player and click Load button (this creates a netConnection). If the connection is successful it creates a new netStream and plays it).
After the video has started to play, click the Pause Button (this calls netStream.togglePause function).
Seek to a specified time by writing it in the “Seek to time” textbox and clicking the associated GO button. (this calls netStream.pause() and then netStream.seek(time)). If testing with file timecodeSample.mp4, seek to time 10. If testing with sample1_1500kbps.f4v seek to time 5.
Repeat the same steps using a version of Adobe Flash Player later than 10.1.
Open the sample player (PlayerSeekTestAS3.swf) in Adobe Flash Player version later than 10.1 (tested using versions WIN 10,1,53,64, WIN 10,2,153,2, and WIN 10,3,181,14).
Write the same rtmp stream url in the url text box of the sample player and click Load button.
After the video has started to play click the Pause Button.
Seek to the same time as before by writing it in the “Seek to time” textbox and clicking the associated GO button. If testing with file timecodeSample.mp4, seek to time 10. If testing with sample1_1500kbps.f4v seek to time 5.
    Expected result:
The same frame should be displayed in the video section of the sample player after the sequence of steps described above.
    Actual result:
When using Adobe Flash Player later than version 10.1 the same sequence of steps will have sought an additional frame so the frames displayed in the video section of the sample player do not match.
When testing with file timecodeSample.mp4, seeking to time 10 displays:
timecode: 03:44:18:24 in Adobe Flash Player earlier than 10.1
timecode : 03:44:18:25 in Adobe Flash Player 10.1 or later
When testing with file sample1_1550kbps.f4v, seeking to time 5 displays different frames in the 2 described cases. However, seeking to time 4.96 (approximately one frame before) in Adobe Flash Player 10.1 or later will produce the same frame as previous Adobe Flash Player versions.
    Additional info:
The issue is reproducible only for FMS streams and it has been reproduced using Flash Media Server 3.5.5, 3.5.6 and 4.0.
The sample player displays the current player version and type, it polls and displays the netStream.time property and in Adobe Flash Player versions later than 10.1 it allows checking a Smart Seek check box before loading the stream. When Smart Seek is on, the netStream.time value seems to be correct (when not using smart seek the netStream.time will always take the value of the offset sent in netStream.seek(offset)) and based on that we can use netStream.step to step to the correct frame.
For example, when testing with file timecodeSample.mp4 in Adobe Flash player 10.1 or later:
without Smart Seek selected, after seeking to time 10, the “Current time” label will display 10
with Smart Seek selected, after seeking to time 10, the “Current time” label will display 10.06 (more than 1 frame after time 10), clicking “Step 1 frame back” will seek to the correct frame and the “Current time” label will display 10.026.
The same can be observed when testing with file sample1_1500kbps.f4v in Adobe Flash Player 10.1 or later:
without Smart Seek selected, after seeking to time 5, the “Current time” label will display 5
with Smart Seek selected, after seeking to time 5, the “Current time” label will display 5.072 (more than 1 frame after time 5), clicking “Step 1 frame back” will seek to the correct frame and the “Current time” label will display 5.005.

I've recently come across a similar issue, but my seek to returns a different frame result.
For example with an encoded video that is 29.97fps, a seek to 10 seconds returns 9:28 in the video (via TC window burn), yet Flash returns a time of 10.00.
With an encode of 23.976, a seek to 10 seconds returns 9:23 (via TC window burn), yet again Flash returns a time of 10.00.
Every once and a while the result is frame accurate, but I can't yet find a way to reliably recreate it.
As with tuvman1, I have confirmed that the the above issues worked correctly when using a player that was pre 10.1
