Details of new nForce 3/4 socket 939 boards

The K8N Neo4-F has been mentioned elsewhere in this forum and the details are now on the Global site. However MSI has also posted details of three other new socket 939 nForce boards as follows:-
The K8N Neo4-FI has the nForce 4 Ultra chipset with SATA 11:- http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=651
The K8N Neo2-F has the nForce 3 Ultra chipset:- http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=650
and the K8N Neo2-FX has the nForce 3 250Gb chipset:- http://www.msi.com.tw/program/products/mainboard/mbd/pro_mbd_detail.php?UID=649

2.7v will not be a problem. I've got mine set to 2.8v. Once you start getting over 3v then you're shortening the lifespan of the module.(most systems will be obsolete before this happens)  This board only goes up to 2.85v.  Using 4 modules, you may want to set the command rate to 2t in the bios if it did not default to this setting. You would be better off running 2X512 megs of PC3200. Stability would improve and you'd be able to run the memory with tighter timings.

  • Any news about MSI's socket 939 NF3-250 board?

I hope to see something like the socket 754 board, that had a special care from MSI. I'll grow real mad if MSI doesn't go with Nforce 3 250 for socket 939, relying on the fact that VIA's new chipset will have a PCI fix.

DDR2 might be a problem because the memory controller is inside the CPU.
I heard that is why AMD has no plans of switching to DDR2 anytime soon.

  • K8T Neo2 socket 939 and Sempron??

I just got a K8T Neo2 board in my hands, it's a socket 939 board... You knew that..
A sticker on the box says that it supports AMD Sempron CPU, my thought is HOW?  I've only seen Semprons with Socket A and Socket 754, never a 939.
Any info at all on this?

Hmm.. No matter how I try to figure out that thought, I can't see the solution?  If I headed a large corp. and bought 200+ mobos to use with Sempron and I couldn't assemble them, I'd probably strangle the closest MSI representative..  The worst part is that I can't find ANYTHING about this, not inside the box, not on AMD's site and not on MSI's site.  Only that damned label on the mobo box..

  • Neo2 w/Socket 939 and nForce3 - discontinued?

    Hello:
I'm pretty new to this, so some of my questions might have obvious answers that I just haven't been able to find.
Currently building a machine for home use, but have not yet purchased a motherboard, though I had decided on MSI. The particular model I was thinking of was the K8N Neo2 Platinum. I have heard, though, that this model is being discontinued. Many distributors still have the K8N Neo2-F, but some seem to be out of stock.
The thing is, I need a chipset that has good Linux compatibility -- and as far as I know, the nForce4 is not yet there, but the nForce3 has stable Linux drivers. I'd also like a socket 939, but it seems like all the socket 939 boards are coming with the nForce4 chipset.
So -- does anyone know if MSI is going to continue making a Socket 939 mainboard with the nForce3 chipset?
    Thanks,
    Doug

    Doug,
The K8N Neo2 Platinum is still listed on the current list of Mobos on the MSI website and pricewatch still shows quite a few vendors still selling it.
    Thanks for answering.
What you say is true. But of all the vendors selling it, the only one who has it in stock is selling it as an OEM piece "with a COMPAQ branded bios splash screen".
I'm still wondering if this board or the Neo2-F (still widely available) will continue to be made, or if MSI will continue making a socket 939/nForce3 board.
Eh...I can always bite the bullet and live with not-so-great Linux support for a while with the nForce4.
    Thanks again.

  • New Need Sink needed for MSI P7N Diamond nForce 780i SLi (Socket 775)

    Hi Guys,
I've been having a problem with my machine where it will be working away as and then suddenly restart. I haven't been able to pin point the problem as it can happen regardless of applications or load thats on the machine. I've also run a couple of app's to check the RAM and its fine. The only thing I've been noticing is that the 4 cores of my Q6600 seem to be running a bit hot. On average on Idle there running between 45-55oc. Does this seem normal? I'm thinking that the cpu might be over heating when I'm running apps. I've seen one of the cores up around 68oc when under a bit of load. I'm using the stock heat sink at the moment and would like to cool things down it see if that helps. Can anyone recommend something suitable for my motherbroad.
    Thanks

Thermaltake ToughPower 750W Modular Power Supply
My Q6600 (also G0/SLACR but don't know what you mean by "Pro") is OC'd to 3.4GHz and has had no problems running stable.  Highest temps during OCCT/Linpack and LinX/Linpack peak at 80C 1st/2nd cores - 76 C 3rd/4th cores.  Other tests (e.g. Prime95 small FFTs) run much cooler.  I've run 2hr+ linpack tests with no errors, so I don't think you need to worry about your temps yet.
However, may I suggest that you check into is your power supply, in particular the modular connections.  I had the ToughPower 750W Modular before upgrading to PCP&C.  I noticed that the ToughPower's modular connections had a tendency to be just a tad loose.  They wouldn't dislodge but they had a little bit of play.  I could jiggle them ever so slightly while they were connected.  As a result, the CPU power cable (8-pin/4-pin) would cause a restart upon the slightest disturbance or sensation.  I've since discovered that modular connectors also affect the efficiency, power noise levels, and overall performance of a PSU.  All in all, I plan to avoid modular connectors entirely going forward.  Many newer cases have excellent cable management features and even old-style cases can be cleaned up with a little planning and effort.  So the modular cabling advantages don't offset the severe disadvantages.  Even if your problem isn't due to the PSU, it's something I'd recommend considering replacing.
Good luck.  Hope all the suggestions are able to help you nail down and resolve your issue.

  • Socket 939 v 754

When deciding between socket 754 athlon 64 3400+ and the socket 939 3500+ (for all intensive purposes the focus is gaming) is there much of a performance difference, be it due to the cpu or the M/B, or the combo of the two?? I would like to use the newer boards which are 939, but the specs seem to be almost identical, yet much cheaper to go with a 754 board with a 3400 2.2ghz chip vs a 939 board with an athlon 3500 2.2 ghz chip.
Also, any real benefit for gaming with 512kb v 1MB cache, or is this mainly benchmarking performance upgrade where in real life the effect is basically nil?
    Thank you, Mark
No system info to post about yet will be using windows 98 SE for a month then will get XP home SP 2.

1)939 Dual Channel gives between 2-5% better performance Memory over 754
2)New 90nm 64CPU are only 939pin They run cooler & lower voltage than previous 130nm fabrications and are very overclockable. RElatively Cheap 3200 939 90nm is about £21/$35 more than 3200 754.
    3) Only real d/side for 939 is perhaps memory config. Makes more sence on both 754 & 939 to go with 512Mb modules, thats fine on 754, but you wont get the benefit of dual channel without putting 2 modules in. Therefore you have the cost of an extra module. You could get 2x256mb but thts probably a false economy.
Over the last 2 months since I built my rig ,the price differential between the 754 and 939 has narrowed to the stage where If i were buying today I would go 939.
    Hope this Helps.
But then there's Nforce 4 939 coming up any day with extra goodies - PCI-Express, Sata 2.
Where do you draw the line

Not much we can tell you here. Compag, E-Machine, Gateway, HP ,Dell and other OEM companies get boards from makers like MSI. However in most cases they are built specific to those OEM companies. You can't use MSI Bios's, Drivers or Utilities to make them work due to changes from the retail market MSI boards. As far as the Semperon AMD.COM will have those details for you.
The best source of info on your compaq is through Compaq.

SiS makes inroads into AMD chipset market, set to launch PCIe chipsets in November
Michael McManus, DigiTimes.com, Taipei [Wednesday 6 October 2004]
Silicon Integrated Systems (SiS) is making inroads into the AMD chipset market and will increase its efforts by releasing a number of PCI Express (PCIe) chipsets for the AMD K8 platform, beginning in November, according to the company.
SiS claims it ranks second in market share in both the Intel and AMD chipset market, and its goal is to become the number-one producer of AMD chipsets. Currently, VIA is the market leader in the AMD segment.
In September, SiS announced that NEC and Hewlett-Packard (HP) would market AMD K8 products featuring the company’s chipsets. Both HP and NEC will bundle the integrated SiS760 with their consumer PCs.
According to the company, its revenues are expected to grow 10% sequentially in September due to increased sales of K8 chipsets to PC OEMs.
In November, SiS will begin volume production of its discrete PCIe-enabled 761 north bridge, which will feature one PCIe x16 lane. The761GS, a version featuring integrated graphics, will follow in the first quarter of next year. The company will also introduce two more integrated parts in the second quarter of next year, the 770 and 756FX, with volume production coming in the third quarter.
The 761GX and 756FX will feature SiS’ Mirage1 graphics, which support DirectX7, while the 770 will use the Mirage3 core, which supports DirectX9.
According to SiS, the 756FX will also support two PCIe express graphics cards. In addition to supporting Nvidia’s SLI (scalable link interface) solution, SiS claims it is developing a part that will support ATI PCIe cards.
SiS will partner its PCIe north bridges with the 965 I/O controller. The 965 features two PCIe x1 lanes, integrated RAID and Gigabit Ethernet, and supports four SATA ports.
SiS’ November launch of its PCIe chipsets will come one month after VIA begins volume production of its VIA K8T890 chipset. Nvidia and ATI are also expected to release PCIe chipsets for the AMD platform in the fourth quarter.

  • K8N Neo4 Platinum problem socket 939

    Hi pals...
The problem is that the small fan placed near the memory slots in my MOBO (which I was told is the chipset fan) makes a very loud high pitched noise everytime i turn the PC on. Actually I keep my PC on 24/7, but sometimes when I turn it off and then I turn it on again, after a short while, it starts making this weird noise, which starts increasing louder and louder (as if verything was going to explode) and after three or five minutes, it suddenly stops and all the noises are the usual fan-like ones. The fan has MSI logo on it.
So far the PC has been working fine and apart from that nothing else is wrong. My processor is an AMD Athlon 64 3200+ socket 939. I have 1Gb Memory and the VGA is an MSI NX GeForce 6600 GT 128 Mb
Can that small fan be replaced in case it is the fan actually about to die? or do I have to buy a WHOLE new MOBO. this one is not even one year old, but the warranty only covered it until the 9th month so I cannot take it to the shop where I bought it (besides it's way far from where I live).
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanxs

    Pals...
Don't get angry please and I am definitely sorry for not answering earlier but given the fact that I don't want the card to completely die on me (or the PC for what it's worth) I keep it turned off and when I need to do something on it, I turn it on for a short while (answering your messages for example).
As the zalman option you suggested, I must tell you that I live in Tierra del Fuego, Argentina, which is the southermost place on the earth. (Thank God We are 200 Kms away from Antarctica, so as it's VERY COLD here, I don't mind very much about getting external heat. Actually I am keeping my heaters fown so that the room doesn't get hot and BELIEVE ME when I say that it's cold in the room) Anyway, PC devices here are VERY hard to find since the best option os to buy them online in Buenos Aires (which is 3000 Kms away from my town) and the prices with shipping expenses and all make products extremely expensive, to such an extent that getting a new card is the best option. What's more, MOST of the coolers you are suggesting do not even EXIST here in Argentina. So, I had to try other alternatives to what you were suggesting, but since I cannot have my AVG card without a cooling system, I guess I'll have to decide on something. I have already discarded this Big device I asked you about as you all pointed out the fact that the noise will me madenning and what I am actually trying to avoid is to have MORE NOISE from fans from the ones I already have.
In the meantime, do you know of that utility I asked about? I mean, is there such a thing?
I thank you enormously for the help and advice given. Believe me that is actually leading me.
Look... On an Argentinian bidding site (like e-bay) I found the one you mention, but it doesn't say LED. Is it the same? http://www.deremate.com.ar/accdb/viewItem.asp?IDI=11063197
It's U$D 65 (quite expensive converted to my currency) and the option I mentioned of the Giant cooler was almost the same price. Do you think I should go for it?
Ooops... I found it on another bidding site and cheaper... and this one DOES SAY LED!!!!
