Details on booting from a Fire Wire HD

Good day, all
I'm trying to make a bootable back up of my internal hard drive on my old iBook.
I used "Personal Backup X3" to "clone" my drive to a LaCie Fire Wire drive (which is partitioned into two 40 gig parts.
When I boot the iBook (with the LaCie connected) holding down the option key my screen shows my internal hard drive, one curved arrow, and one straight arrow. I infer that the curved arrow rechecks for bootable drives but is that correct? The straight arrow boots the computer from the selected drive.
Since I only see one icon (for my drive), I'm guessing there is a problem seeing the LaCie drive. Could this be because it's partitioned?
Let me know if I'm confused on how this works.
Thanks,
Hugh

Did you correctly partition and format this external drive? See the following:
Extended Hard Drive Preparation
1. Open Disk Utility in your Utilities folder.
2. After DU loads select your hard drive (this is the entry with the mfgr.'s ID and size) from the left side list. Click on the Partition tab in the DU main window.
3. Under the Volume Scheme heading set the number of partitions from the drop down menu to two. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Partition button and wait until the process has completed.
4. Select the volume you just created (this is the sub-entry under the drive entry) from the left side list. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window.
5. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (Journaled.) Click on the Options button, check the button for Zero Data and click on OK to return to the Erase window.
6. Click on the Erase button. The format process can take up to several hours depending upon the drive size.
Repeat Steps 4-6 for the second volume.
Personally I would use the Restore option of DU to clone your iBook's drive but before you do I would do the following:
Repairing the Hard Drive and Permissions
Boot from your OS X Installer disc. After the installer loads select your language and click on the Continue button. When the menu bar appears select Disk Utility from the Installer menu (Utilities menu for Tiger and Leopard.) After DU loads select your hard drive entry (mfgr.'s ID and drive size) from the the left side list. In the DU status area you will see an entry for the S.M.A.R.T. status of the hard drive. If it does not say "Verified" then the hard drive is failing or failed. (SMART status is not reported on external Firewire or USB drives.) If the drive is "Verified" then select your OS X volume from the list on the left (sub-entry below the drive entry,) click on the First Aid tab, then click on the Repair Disk button. If DU reports any errors that have been fixed, then re-run Repair Disk until no errors are reported. If no errors are reported click on the Repair Permissions button. Wait until the operation completes, then quit DU and return to the installer. Now restart normally.
If DU reports errors it cannot fix, then you will need Disk Warrior (4.0 for Tiger, and 4.1 for Leopard) and/or TechTool Pro (4.6.1 for Leopard) to repair the drive. If you don't have either of them or if neither of them can fix the drive, then you will need to reformat the drive and reinstall OS X.
I would then boot the iBook to be sure that OS X starts up properly. If it does then clone the drive as follows:
How to Clone Using Restore Option of Disk Utility
1. Open Disk Utility from the Utilities folder.
2. Select the destination volume from the left side list.
3. Click on the Erase tab in the DU main window. Set the format type to Mac OS Extended (journaled, if available) and click on the Erase button. This step can be skipped if the destination has already been freshly erased.
4. Click on the Restore tab in the DU main window.
5. Select the destination volume from the left side list and drag it to the Destination entry field.
6. Select the source volume from the left side list and drag it to the Source entry field.
7. Double-check you got it right, then click on the Restore button.
Destination means the selected partition on the external drive.
Source means the iBook's drive.

  • Need to "restore/over write" data from ex Fire Wire to internal drive

Let me say up-front that I know little about computers. I backed up my internal drive to my external Fire Wire, as I was going to reinstall Tiger (don't ask me why. It seemed a good idea at the time). Without much thought I checked the clean/erase installation box. (using the Backup 3 download from .mac)
So, when I tried to restore my data, the new install has no record of ever backing up to my Fire Wire, and so won't accept a "Restore" command.
Is there any way I can get my start up drive to rewrite itself from my Fire Wire, or is it (A) a lost cause, or (B) The kind of thing that has to go to the shop?

    Mr Hamilton:
I'm plugged into a Firewire port (I think. Someone else set it up for me. I'll have my friend verify when I see him this week.)
    Mr Majordadusma:
I bought my computer four years ago, around this time of year. "About this Mac" says:
    1 Ghz PowerPC G4
    1MB L3 cache
    1.25 GB DDR SDRAM
    Startup Disk Untitled
    Machine Model: PowerMac3.6
    Boot ROM Version: 4.6.0f1
My External hard drive is listed under "ATA Bus". It's an IBM-1C35L.... there are more letters and numbers, but in case it's the serial number, I'm stopping here. In case they tell the model number, I'm hoping this is enough info to identify. The capasidy is 57.27 GB, with 44.1 GB available.
    File System: Journeled HFS +
Don't know if this is too much info or not enough.
I will try the things you suggested (or, rather, get my friend to try as I'm pretty much afraid to touch my machine. When I backed-up, my iTunes should have had my music and video library, but even though my games and some other backed-up stuff is there, we haven't been able to bring up my Library's--they come up blank--I'm afraid that I mayhave done something to screw that up, so am leery of messing with my computer). If they do not work, I'll report it back here.
I'll also check back here later, in case my G4 model doesn't allow me to boot from an external drive.

  • How to change from ext fire wire drive to Time Capsule retaining all data?

When I first got my new MacBook Pro I used an external FW 800 drive for my Time Machine back-ups. I have now got myself a ITB TC and would like to use that now for Time Machine. Can I copy what was on the external FW 800 to the new TC and continue backing up from where I was?
I have seen mention of using Restore in Disk Utility but that would rename the TC hard drive as far as I can see. Also there was mention of using CCC to clone the original drive I was using onto the TC hard drive. I was hoping there was a simple solution?

    Hi Buzzsaw138,
Since posting, have the phones been activated and has your issue been resolved? I would still like to ask a couple of questions.
When you changed devices, did you keep the same phone numbers?
Do your old devices still work as prepaid lines?
If you still need assistance, please feel free to send me a PM with your name and contact information (wireless phone numbers as well). I will be happy to contact you in order to review and resolve this for you.
    Thanks!

  • Fire Wire NOT Working

I have a Mac G5 2.5 For years I have had an M Audio interface connected to the Fire Wire port in the back; it worked consistently. I disconnected the M Audio last night in order to connect my video camera into the Fire Wire port (to import videos into iMovie) However, the computer would not detect the camera. Then I tried the Fire Wire port on the front of the computer, and still the computer would not recognize the camera. I gave up on trying to connect the video camera, disconnected it from the Fire Wire port, then plugged back in the M Audio. But now the M Audio will not work either! I tried both Fire Wire ports, AND I even tried another M Audio Fire Wire 410 just to make sure there was nothing wrong with the first one. I know there is power coming from the Fire Wire ports because the light on the M Audio will flicker, but the computer will not recognize it to allow me to use it the device. I also connected a Fire Wire hard drive - same thing.....the light goes on but the computer does not see the hard drive.
At this point I have to assume that there is something wrong with the Fire Wire ports, as all 4 of my devices would not work. I have worked for years this way with minimal problems. What can I do?

    Hi rolesh79,
I have read that it is not too difficult to burn out the firewire controller on the logic board. Especially, when the device is turned on when plugged in to the mac.
You might try a third party firewire pci card as a replacement. A repair of disk permissions may have an effect. Or try a 800 to 400 adapter: http://www.pcconnection.com/IPA/Shop/Product/Detail.htm?sku=461273&oext=1038A&cisrc=14110944&cisku=461273.

  • External fire wire

i buy a external hard drive (macgally 320g),firewire/ usb 2.0, the thing is when i connect from the fire wire connection it doesnt appear in the computer, it only connect by usb port ,and i put final cut in the external hardrive but when i capture from the camera it says that i have only 10 g (refering to my internal computer), how can i use the external memory to do videos?
    thanks

I don't have Final Cut but it is typical of almost any program on the Mac that you can specify a path to save a file, meaning you can save your data to any volume or folder on a volume of your choosing. Are you sure you have not just missed this setting for Final Cut somewhere?

  • Enabling VNC or Fire Wire booting

    Hello Mac People,
Is there anyway to access "System Preferences" remotely?
I need to check and make sure that "Remote Management" is enabled on a FULL XSERVE server running 10.4.11.
I will be using a Mini-Mac also running 10.4.11; this is only going through a switch (same domain).
I have FULL administrator privileges and have no problem connecting using "Server Admin Tools". And I can telnet in just fine also.
Have tried approximately six GUI VNC applications (Chicken of the VNC, Tight VNC, etc.etc.) and ALL fail with vague error messages.
Also tried a known good PCI video card into this FULL headless server but then the operating system froze at start up. Yes the video card is compatible with 10.4.11.
I have also tied to "kick start" the service as well using:
    sudo sh -c "/bin/echo -n enabled > /Library/Preferences/com.apple.ScreenSharing.launchd"
(and several syntax variations mentioned on the web) but the commands also fail.
This is a CRITICAL Mac server that is other wise working GREAT located at one of the companies that I support and of course they do not want to buy "Apple Remote Desktop". Gees .... this company is still running Office 2000 on most of there workstations. And seeing as how other VNC's are failing I'm not even sure ARD would install and then work anyway.
If there is no way to access "System Preferences" remotely. Would someone please be kind enough to explain or point me to a link on how to use a "Fire Wire" connection and a Mini-Mac to start this server.
I have seen it done before..... where a Mac system was started using the operating system on another Mac system. Do I need a particular application?
    Thanks in advance <smile>

Thank you VERY much for your replies.
I'm thinking that the operating system on this server must be unstable. I know that Disk Warrior has been run on it in the past. Plus AFP (Apple File Protocol) failed to launch after a restart recently. But getting all of the updates fixed that.
Since this is a CRITICAL server I think what I will do is give them an estimate for a brand new main boot hard drive and set the current hard drive aside as a fall back position.
It looks like Snow Leopard (10.6.**) requires an Intel Processor.
This XSERVE is a G5, RackMac 3,1 with Dual 2.3 processors and it looks like they are not Intel based processors????? But "PowerPC" based processors?????
If that is correct I will see if I can locate there copy of Tiger Server. They just bought SEVEN IMac's running 10.6.2 Snow Leopard and you should be able to get more then six years on a VERY expensive full blade server like this.
Anyway, in the mean time, I really need to see how to boot this server from a known good G5, AKA "Target Disk Mode"
I found a link and will try it either this weekend or the next. I work on a lot of week ends at the companies that I support to stay out of the way of the end users.

Once again thank you all VERY much ........ "Live long and prosper" <smile>

  • Install Mac OS X from an External Fire WIre HD : PROBLEM!!!!

Hey guys, I have a MacBook and I wanted to re-install the Mac OS X software. My internal dvd drive doesn't seem to work anymore so I tried to install the OS on a partition of my fire wire drive, from my brother MacBook, no problem there. When I tried to boot my mac from the FireWire Drive, I wasn't able to install it to my computer. Now, the only way I can do anything is if I do it from the FW drive...
Is there anything I can do to solve to problem??

Were you able to boot your other computer from the FW drive? What did you put on the FW drive? Did you actually install OS X onto the FW drive?
If you installed OS X onto the FW drive and can boot the computer with it, then just clone it to your other computer. See the following:
Clone using Restore Option of Disk Utility
Destination means the internal drive on the computer mounted in TDM.
Source means the external FW drive.
If you can connect both computers by FW, then you could actually clone the system from the working computer to the one with the bad optical drive using the above procedure. Destination would be the computer with the bad optical drive booted into TDM. Source is the good computer that you boot normally.

  • Import (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (  many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.

Attempted to import 6.5 GB of (v. 7.1.5) iPhotos from old iMac to new iMac (v. 9.2) using Migration Mgr. over fire wire.  All photos (plus many dups) appeared in EVENTS and PHOTOS in the new Mac – but NO ALBUMS.  I read a previous response to a similar question -- to copy the pictures library to the new computer.  How best to do that?

There's actually an option to iPhoto Library Manager that makes this all almost work flawlessly (and work well enough for me). With the exception of Photo Albums that the pictures are part of, if you select "Library > Rebuild Library..." and then select "Scavange Orphaned Photos" check box, then it will put all the Photos and Movies into the "Scavanged Photos" album. It matches the modified pictures to their originals. It preserves all the event names and photo groupings. All the meta-data I could spot check it got right (although with 44k pictures, I only checked a few). If you fail to select this option, however, it will find no pictures at all when it goes to rebuild the library (this was true of the small test libraries I tried as well as the big, monster 280GB library I just finished converting). The conversion process took 5 hours to run, but in the end produced a library my new iPhoto can read and that I can interact with. I'll be suggesting to the iPhoto Library Manager folks a notation that would estimate the number of Orphaned Photos and display that number as a hint to the user that the option would be useful.
Edited: Thanks to Old Toad and LarryHN for their help in finding which of the many options to transition this library to 9.5.1 I needed to use. Sorry if I took my frustration of the past several months out on you guys for generously trying to help me.

  • HT2498 how do I find out what kind of fire wire port I have on my desktop? I want to transfer video from my camcorder.

how do I find out what kind of fire wire port I have on my desktop? I want to transfer video from my camcorder.

If you have Firewire 800 it's a boxy looking port, the Firewire 400 is thinner and has a arrow looking shape, you can get a adpater.
FW800 is simply FW 400 x 2, so the adapter gives you FW 400.

    Hi,
Are you talking about your computer which has no firewire port ? If YES you can have one of two options:
    (a) Use FCI - Firewire card like this (preferred)
    You can buy from this:
      http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/2-Ports-PCI-Express-PCI-E-IEEE-1394A-Firewire-Adapter-Cable-Card-/1507023...
    (b) You can also use USB-Firewaire adapter like this:

  • Video out fire wire port from iTunes?

Final cut and Pro Tools LE both have the ability to send video from a G5 to a TV out of the fire wire port via a Canopus ADVC-110. Why doesn't iTunes? I understand that the new Mac TV gizmo plus an airport card will do this, but I already have all the hardware I need for this to work. I just need iTunes to take advantage of the same external video option that Final Cut and Pro Tools LE have. Anyone know of a patch or something that would make this happen. Or at least a stand alone player that will play the m4v iTunes video files and play video out fire wire port to my canopus which will then send it to the TV?

In an attempt to get my iTunes downloaded TV episodes to play on my TV without having to buy the Apple TV hardware and an airport card I have been trying to find a way to convert the m4v video files into a format that can be read by a stand alone player that allows me to output video playback through my fire wire port so my canopus box can then send it to my tv and stereo. I tried iSquint and it does not work. I get an AppleScript error "Can't make "" into type real. (-1700)" If you hit OK the program then spins it's wheels with the progress report "Preparing Audio for File 1..." It is still my belief that Apple should enable iTunes to output video through the fire wire port. Since Final Cut Pro and Pro Tools LE have that ability and it works I assume that it should work wth iTunes. Please send iTunes feedback from within iTunes and ask apple to add this option to iTunes.

I can't transfer my info from my old Macbook (Year 2006) to my new MacBook Pro. The Fire Wire Cable changed !
Excuse my English, I am French writing from Paris, France
    Thanks

All you need, if you've the non-Retina model, is a FireWire 400 to FireWire 800 cable -> such as this one from Amazon.
I know that there's a UK Amazon - can you order from there? Or is there a French Amazon as well?

  • Transferring files from old computer with fire wire

I'm transferring files from my old computer to my new one. The old one has three hard drives. Everything from the startup drive transferred OK over fire wire, but the new computer doesn't see the 2nd and 3rd hard drives on the old one. Is there a way to link these? Thanks!

Click here and follow the instructions, setting up FireWire networking from System Preferences if desired. FireWire Target Disk mode will only connect to the master ATA drive on the ATA 0 bus, and will shut down the computer if there's nothing at that location.

  • Re: Sun Fire v490 / Solaris 9 booting from CD, Network problems

    Hi Folks,
Apologies in advance for the length of this post.
For the purposes of disaster recovery I have built a custom CD based on the Solaris 9 installation disk with our third party backup / restore software included on it.
After the rcS script has setup networking it runs a bash shell so that I can label / partition / format the hard disks as necessary then use the third party software to recover the system.
This works fine on almost all the machines we've tested (Ultra 10s, Ultra 30s, FS Prime Power 400)
On one Sun Fire v490 however I seem to have problems with networking...
Part of the customised rcS script makes the following call
ifconfig ce0 10.4.20.20 netmask 255.255.0.0 upto configure the NIC. However when the rcS script leaves me at the shell I'm unable to ping anything.
The output from ifconfig - a looks like...
    lo0 flag=..
        inet 127.0.0.1
    ce0: flags=1000823<UP BROADCAST,NOTRAILER,MULTICAST,IPv4>
mtu 1500 index 2 inet 10.4.20.20 netmask ffff0000 broadcast 10.255.255.255 ether 0:14:4f:0:be:beThe only thing that looks odd to me is that there's no "RUNNING" entry for ce0 that I get if I boot from the same CD on my other machines (Ultra 30s & Ultra 10s)
The broadcast address looks wrong, but again it's the same when I boot from th CD on my other test machines and they all seem to work.
I'm pretty sure that ce0 is "plumbed", 'cos if I "unplumb" it from the shell prompt then it doesn't even appear in the output from ifconfig.
Someone has suggested that it's a connectivity issue, but if I boot normally rather than from my custom CD then the networking is fine.
As a test I tried removing the drivers for hme from the CD then booting one of my Ultra30s but in this case the entry for hme0 was completely absent from the output of ifconfig.
So I've concluded that the driver for ce0 is at least there on the v490.
So for the moment I'm confused as to why the ce0 appears on the output for ifconfig, but has no RUNNING 'flag'
    Anyone got any ideas
    Many thanks in advance
    Regards
    Kevin

    hello
you have an error in your interface configuration
    you should have
you are using a class A ip adress but with a class B netmask
    ip 10.4.20.20
    netmask 255.255.0.0
    broadcast should be 10.4.255.255

If it's slow on startup it would be extensions loading or LaunchDaemons starting up.
You should have a look in:
    /Library/LaunchDaemons
    /Library/Extensions
You can count out anything in your home folder and it shouldn't put anything in /System as that's reserved for Apple.
