Detect missing faces feature explained?

Hi,
When you select some photos, right click, and select "detect missing faces" is this supposed to make iPhoto rescan the photos you've selected and try to find any faces in the photos? As if you re-imported the photos? Or is it just trying to match faces it has already found during import with names on the 'cork board'?
The reason I ask is that I did an experiment of deleting many faces iPhoto found, followed by the "Detect missing faces" bit. None of the faces that were previously found were found again. If I re-import these photos, then the faces are found again.
Cheers,
Chris

Okay, I'll try to make my question simpler: Does this feature find try to find new faces in a photo, or try to name those it has already found?
As an aside, in the German version the menu item is localized as 'Fehlende Gesichter erkennen', which from a logic standpoint makes very little sense. I would think it could only recognize a face it has already found (ie the face is not missing). Seems like it should be either 'Fehlende Gesichter finden' or 'Unerkannte Gesichter einorden' depending on what the intent of the feature is.

  • Detect Missing Faces

    I recently learned that through an update a new feature was added to Faces. When you right-click on a picture in the iPhoto library you can now select Detect Missing Faces. This feature apparently relaxes the face detection algorithm so that faces that were not found in the initial scan (or during the upload) may now be detected. Unfortunately, this feature is only available when one is not in Faces and you must be looking at the thumbnails.
    In any case, it does not seem to work for me. I have several pictures with clear head-on shots where the faces were not detected (and I don't mean recognized); when I exit Faces and right-click the image to select Detect Missing Faces, nothing happens.
    Is it working for anyone? Is there a trick?
    Thanks.

    I have the same frustrating problem. Everytime I add new pictures, faces is not recognizing it. I would have to individually tag them, even though I already have hundreds of pictures with the same face in my corkboard. Help

  • Why detect missing faces? why not recognise them all in the first scan?

    each time i import images, some faces are detected instantly, but I have to run detect missing faces one time more to find other recognizable faces. why possibly does aperture apply such mechanism?

    at a guess its probably a speed versus productivity tradeoff, detection down to a certain level takes a certain amount of processing, detection to the nth degree would take a lot more.

  • Smart Album errors detecting photos w/ missing faces

    I created a smart album (Faces is "unnamed") to find photos with missing faces. I went through and identified each of the photos. As I did this, as soon as I put in the name, many (but not all) disappeared from the album.
    However, the Smart Album still has a number of photos, even though there are no unidentified images. I checked each one to see if there were small boxes that I missed, but there weren't.
    I deleted the album and set up a new smart album (with the same criteria) and the images still appear in the album.
    Is there any way to make my smart album smarter? (remove a plist???)
    Thanks!

    .  "Affe".  I have a face named "Sculpture".
    I was quite impressed that Aperture's Face Recognition recognizeed the baboon's face.
    I have some nice tagged sculptures too.
    And some of the more cheeky suggestion by Aperture I named "Funny Face", for example - where does Aperture see a Face here in the bottom part of the picture?

  • Bug with Add Missing Face

    Hello,
    Just realized after spends hours of adding missing faces to many of my pictures, seems like some of the box's/names disappear after scrolling forward about 5 pictures or so. When I go back to the picture my hard work is gone. Seems to happen on the pictures where the faces are close up. Is this normal?

    Hi there,
    Unfortunately I don't have anything new to add apart that I am also suffering the same problem. I think the only thing useful to do is to also report a bug. Could you post the text you sent to Apple so that they see at that the problems are related?
    However, I found by chance a situation where I think I defeated the bug.
    As I understand from the other posts in this subject, this bug appears when iphoto hasn't recognized the face and we add a missig face. Now, in the help of iphoto it says that "+Only faces that have been detected by iPhoto in its initial scan of your photo library can affect face detection and recognition results. Manually identified faces don’t aid the face-matching ability in iPhoto.+".
    So, in one of the photos where the bug was happening (a close-up photo of my wife's face), after trying several times and different box sizes, I tried the odd solution and put the box outside the face, near the hair and catching some background. It worked. The name is still there (not on the face, though). I know this isn't a solution, and Apple should work this out, but maybe you could try and see if this works for you too.
    Cheers,
    JP

    The page load progress bar that was on the lower right of the window is no longer there. After updating to the latest version of Firefox on my Mac there is no progress bar for the page load. I really miss this feature and can't seem to find a way to obtain it. The tab has a circular progress wheel but this is useless for determining a stuck or slow loading page.
    PLEASE NOTE: I am typing this in from a Windows based work computer but am asking about my Apple MacBook Pro that i use at home.

    Firefox 4 saves the previous session automatically, so there is no longer need for the dialog asking if you want to save the current session.<br />
    You can use "Firefox > History > Restore Previous Session" to get the previous session at any time.<br />
    There is also a "Restore Previous Session" button on the default <b>about:home</b> Home page.<br />

  • Is the iPhone 5 in UAE missing any features?

    Hi guys,
    As far as anyone of you know is the iPhone 5 (and/or iOS in general) missing any features if bought from the UAE??
    Because as I recall at some point the iPhone 4 or 4S didn't offer FaceTime in UAE, so that's why I am asking!!
    Thank you

    FaceTime is not available on iPhones purchased in the UAE. It doesn't matter where you activate it or what version of the software you update it to. It can't be added to those phones. Ever. Sorry.

  • Missing faces not being saved

    When I updated to the newest version of iPhoto (9.3.2) on Mountain Lion, I am unable to save missing faces. I will select the add a face button and type in the person's name. When I go back to the photo none of the face data is being saved? Can anyone help me on this? Thanks!!

    Option 1
    Back Up and try rebuild the library: hold down the command and option (or alt) keys while launching iPhoto. Use the resulting dialogue to rebuild. Choose to Repair Database. If that doesn't help, then try again, this time using Rebuild Database.
    If that fails:
    Option 2
    Download iPhoto Library Manager and use its rebuild function. This will create a new library based on data in the albumdata.xml file. Not everything will be brought over - no slideshows, books or calendars, for instance - but it should get all your albums and keywords back.
    Because this process creates an entirely new library and leaves your old one untouched, it is non-destructive, and if you're not happy with the results you can simply return to your old one.

  • Q: How to get rid of the FACES FEATURE in iPhoto'11???

    Does anybody know if it is possible to DISABLE the FACES feature on the new iPhoto'11?? The feature is awful. It's turned my photo library into massive storage places with at least 10 times the photographs that I had originally. Whoever thought it would be a cool or decent feature was so wrong. Rule of thumb: A feature that displays more control over its app than the user is NEVER fun.
    -Maggie

    No It is not possible to disable Faces in iPhoto. It should not be any major bulk to your library if it is then something is wrong.
    Once it finishes its initial indexing of faces it is fairly easy to ignore. If you want to let Apple know you do not like the way this works submit feedback.
    See iPhoto->Provide iPhoto Feedback
    regards
    BTW for future reference there is a list here devoted to iPhoto. Questions regarding iPhoto are best asked there You'll usually get better results.

  • Missing update features?

    I got the newest version of Lightroom (5.7.1 (assured by image 1)) after reading about the new features (HDR and Panorama merge) in the update window (shown in image 3).
    BUT when clicking "Search for updates" I still get the same window (image 3) that originaly made me update. And as one can see, in image 2, there is just no "Merge" - option at all.
    I'm looking forward to your solution.

    Thanks a lot!

  • Missing preferredWidth feature (or workaround)

    A couple of times I have ran into a problem where I want to create a swing component where the default preferred dimension is wider that I want. I miss a feature where I can set preferredWith to something (and not specify the preferred height).
    Example:
    JLabel descriptionLabel = new JLabel("<html>Yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi</html>");
    This label's preferredDimension suggest that the label is printed on one line, however the component supports wrapping to multiple lines fines, and in my case this would give a much nicer result.
    I am aware of that adding <br> tags would solve the problem to some degree, but what I am looking for is a solution using Swing layout mechanism.
    Have anyone had the same problem and found a simple solution for it?
    Kind regards,
    Morten

    import javax.swing.JFrame;
    import javax.swing.JLabel;
    import javax.swing.text.View;
    public class Tester {
        public static void main(String[] args) {
            JFrame frame = new JFrame();
            JLabel label =
                    new JLabel("<html>Yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi "+
                    "yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi yadi</html>");
            label.setPreferredSize(getPreferredSize(label.getText(),true,150));
            frame.getContentPane().add(label);
            frame.pack();
            frame.setDefaultCloseOperation(JFrame.EXIT_ON_CLOSE);
            frame.setVisible(true);
        private static final JLabel resizer = new JLabel();
        /**Returns the preferred size to set a component at in order to render
         * an html string.  You can specify the size of one dimension.*/
        public static java.awt.Dimension getPreferredSize(String html,
                boolean width, int prefSize) {
            resizer.setText(html);
            View view = (View) resizer.getClientProperty(
                    javax.swing.plaf.basic.BasicHTML.propertyKey);
            view.setSize(width?prefSize:0,width?0:prefSize);
            float w = view.getPreferredSpan(View.X_AXIS);
            float h = view.getPreferredSpan(View.Y_AXIS);
            return new java.awt.Dimension((int) Math.ceil(w),
                                          (int) Math.ceil(h));
    }It dosen't seem to work if you just specify a height, but you can play around with it. The view class also has a pretty interesting break method that I haven't tried yet.

  • How to not use Face naming to help detect further faces?

    HI,
    My question may sound funny.
    My understanding is both iPhoto and Aperture use detected face in helping detect other faces. That's what the help suggest, in identifying more face it facilitate the detection.
    In many photo you would have someone visible and would want to identify her/him. by doing so I would use anything but the face, the back of the head or other part of the body that is visible.
    If Aperture/iPhoto would then use that added image to improve face detection with nothing useful, it would make it even less efficient!
    Are their other way to identify someone and have it in the Faces without affecting the faces definition the the software seem to be building? tag not to use the face for further detection for example.
    Vincent

    See my answer to your duplicate question.
    Re: How to not use Face naming to help detect further faces?
    Naming body parts will not hamper the face recognition algorithm. iPhoto will ignore manually added faces, see this link:

    1) The best way to relocate the iTunes library folder is to move the entire iTunes folder with all subfolders to the new path, then press and hold down shift as start iTunes and keep holding until prompted to choose a library, then browse to the relocated folder and open the file iTunes Library.itl inside it.
    If you've done something different then provide some more details about what is where and I should be able to help.
    2) Purchases on the device should automatically transfer to a Purchased on <DeviceName> playlist, but it my depend a bit on whether automatic iCloud downloads are enabled. If there is a cloudy link then the transfer might not happen. You can use File > Devices > Transfer Purchases. In iTunes you should also check out iTunes Store > Quick Links > Purchased > Music > Not on this computer.
    3) Backup the device, then immediately restore it. In some cases you need to add a restore as new device into that equation. Obbviously not to be attempted until you're sure all your media is in your library. See Recover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device should it be needed.
    4) I believe there is complimentary 1 incident 90-day support with hardware purchases, but no free software support for iTunes itself. AppleCare gets you a different level of support.

  • Missing Search feature

    I like the iPhone but, for anyone who uses the phone for work and has lots of contacts or info in his phone, the Search function is an absolute necessity...
    I have close to 500 business contacts. It is almost impossible to scroll through the whole list. I have keywords in the contact records to locate someone if I forget the name or company. If that happens with the iPhone, I am out of luck. I hope Apple adds the search feature on the first software update.
    Also, the business world has adopted the Adobe and MS Office document formats. Why have they been ommited in the iPhone? Is the target audience non-business people?
    Let the Flames begin...
    IBM Comp.   Windows XP

    I would actually disagree that the iPhone isn't being targetted to business buyers. I think the only reason it seems that way is because of missing critical features like a find function, copy and paste, multi-recipient SMS, teathering, etc.
    Don't get me wrong, I'm not knocking the iPhone. I love it. And its exceeded my expectations as a Rev. A v1.0 device. But I think you might be making a leap there by assuming Apple isn't positioning this device to business users, when it's probably just that Apple was rushed to get the device out. (Remember how Apple delayed Leopard a few months because they had to pull the Leopard dev team to help with the iPhone to meet the June 29th launch date).
