Detect Separate Items

I have a Macbook Pro, v 10.6.6 and when I scan with my HP c309 printer/scanner it would not
scan the entire document. Only one section. After playing with the settings I got it to work properly
by selecting the   'Detect Separate Items'  checkbox. Now it scans the entire document as one.
If I deselect the checkbox, it identifies only a small section of the document.
I'm satisfied that is is operating correctly, but this setting seems reversed according to
every help aid I could read. It should be the other way around- check the box to detect
smaller areas of the document. My wife says sometimes I am losing it. Maybe she is
finally right........

I tried scanning text, photos, graphics, and all the combinations thereof. Now I've only tried scanning two items at a time. Items were separated by 1/4" to 1". It could be my specific printer driver that is the issue.
You give me cause to believe that it can be done. Thanks for that.

  • Image capture and detect separate items

    I have a Lexmark Genesis S816 multifunction printer and am using Mac OSx 10.7.5.  I am trying to scan multiple photos and have an issue with "Detect Separate Items".  This feature works, but with odd quirks.
    With the details panel open, the initial scan works well.  On the second scan, I have multiple boxes on the screen and each picture is scanned multiple times.  The Use custom size check box is checked and I am saving the images as .jpeg with a resolution of 300 dpi.
    If I close the details panel, the images are scanned a single time, but I have no control over the size or position of the images.  If a picture has a light background, the automatic feature cuts off part of the picture, believing the image stopped at that point.
    Any suggestions

  • HP 3180 - "Detect Separate Items" stuck on

    I have an HP3180 and am running 10.6.1. It appears to function correctly except that I cannot disable the "Detect Separate Items" function. I have tried scanning from Preview, Image Capture and directly from the control panel. I have reloaded the 10.6 drivers. I have rebooted. I have checked the box and unchecked the box until I am blue to no avail. Alas, I still get my scan chopped up and with some parts not scanned at all. I see that the C4480 has a nice new driver set v10.3, but there is none for the 3180. What to do.....

  • Separate items

    I could have sworn Image capture would scan an image with the "Detect separate item" option and conform it right even though the item was not be even angle wise in the scanner.
    Now for some reason items don't get an even box and I can't straighten them unless I do it myself which won't be 100% accurate.
    I have used the angle line in the middle of the enclosing box but it is not 100% acturate also.
    Was I dreaming that image capture was making it easy for my or is some setting not right?

  • Image capture won't scan some of "detect separate image"

    When put multiple photos on my scanner using "detect separate images, Image Capture recognizes each separate photo, but when it scans, some of the images come out black, and i have to rescan them.
    Any ideas?

    Thanks PAHU that were a lot of drivers for sure in your link and I installed those. Unfortunately, nor the driver package nor the ICA driver did solve my problem. I'm beginning to think it might just be a bug within Image Capture, although Image Capture is stating the scanner is reporting an error. Strange thing is that Image Capture will work fine as long as I hide the details pane.
    It seems to be an isolated problem too as I can't find any other subject on this on the net. I see more people having trouble to scan images with Image Capture but that's mostly related to not selecting the right part of the preview. I will see if I can reinstall Image Capture from the OSX dvd.

    I noticed after upgrading to Snow Leopard that images imported with Image Capture have "No Access" for Everyone.  I used Image Capture a lot under Leopard and Everyone had "Read Only" or "Read & Write" permissions.  Before and after the upgrade, I stored the images folders I created (with Image Capture) in a Shared/Pictures folder.
    I couldn't find any answers on why the permissions are set this way by Image Capture with Snow Leopard.  I found this article http://www.ehow.com/how_2314896_fix-permissions-mac-os-x.html which at least helped me change the permissions of all images in a given folder.
    Seems one should not have to change the permissions after importing images....

  • Jquery - Detect Page / Item Change

    Hi Guys,
    I am aware of the skillbuilders save before exit plugin but I was wondering if there is a stripped down version, maybe some Jquery to identify if a Page has had any changes made.
    For example if an item on a page is accessed / changed in anyway then an hidden item is set with a flag?
    Thanks All

    No need to reinvent really. If you know about the Skillbuilders plugin, you probably have tried it out already. Their plugins come with good documentation and the source files.
    In the documentation the "changeDetected" procedure is explained:
    The changeDetected method can be used to check elements (not set to ignore) to see if they have changed since the page loaded. It can be called as follows (returns Boolean):
    $(document).apex_save_before_exit('changeDetected');
    Knowing this, you can take a look at the source javascript (apex_save_before_exit.js). The changeDetected function does exactly what you want and would need very minimal adjusting.
    Start with removing
    .not(uiw.options.ignoreChangeSelector)The code also doesn't do anything wild: everything used is standard, such as the defaultValue attribute on text input items.
    Only shuttles are a small exception as they have no standard defaults that can be checked against, and that is why in the "_create" of the plugin these values are stored in a data attribute on the shuttle:
          $('form#wwvFlowForm fieldset.shuttle')
             .not(uiw.options.ignoreChangeSelector)
             .each(function() {
                var loadVal = $v(this.id);
                $(this).data('apex-sbe-load-val', loadVal);
             });You can leave it like that, or rename the data attribute (and change it in the changeDetected attribute).
    If you want to check single items, the function shows you everything you need to check any type of item.

  • Albums with various artists down load as 13 separate items.  How do I rejoin them as an album?

    When I import some compilation albums into my Itunes it seperates them out into seperate "albums" how can I "re-join".

    Make sure "artist" and "album artist" are the same.
    You only need make sure they all have an identical "album artist" to get them to group together. This can be anything as long as it is the same -- even "various artists" for a true compilation.  This is designed so you can keep different artists in the artist field but still have tracks group together.   In fact if you do make the artist fields identical, the album would group together in the first place and you don't need to touch album artist.  However, there may be cases where you do not want to put the identical artist in the artist field, then you need to either flag them as compilation (as indicated in another post) or give them all a single album artist.

  • Sorting iPhoto Videos into separate items in Event Library

    All my videos from iPhoto have imported to iPhoto Videos in iMovie 11 but I want to list them separately in the Event Library List - does anyone know how to do this please?
    ALSO
    I have split them within the browser but unfortunately have put a few in the wrong event - have tried to split but the area is now greyed out - any help would be
    appreciated.
    Many thanks

    But none of the 11 videos is housed in an Event. They are just 11 short videos in a row. I tried to make an empty folder to name as RISE UP, but the application would not let me do that.
    If the files have not yet been imported to iMovie '08 then select the "Import Movie..." File menu option. When the import window opens, in the lower area:
    a) Select your destination hard drive in the "Save to:" block
    b) Select the "Create new Event:" radio button
    c) Name the new event
    d) Select whether you want the files copied or moved to the new event
    Now navigate to and select the files you want to import in the upper half of the window. (You can select individual files; multiple, non-contiguous files; or a contiguous range of files.) Press import when done making your selection(s).

  • Epson stylus CX5500 - scanning size

    Hi,
    I having problems with my all in one printer and scanner (Epson stylus CX5500). I can open the scanning program in both printers and faxes and image capture, and the 'overview scan' is fine and captures the whole document/image but when it does the analysing scan it separates the document and only scans and saves certain sections of the document/image. The 'detect separate items' is not selected. Only getting bits and pieces of a document is very frustrating.
    Open to any relevant suggestions
    Thanks.

    What software are you using to scan with?

  • Open image capture question

    I am having trouble using the detect separate items feature in the Apple open image capture feature.  Instead of separating the scans, it just does one big scan.   Is anybody else having this problem?  If it works for you, what type of scanner do you use?

    Have you tried VueScan? It works well with several scanners. I would give it a shot. I have an old UMAX scanner that has no driver available for Mac OS X and VueScan made it work.

    Here is the link to the latest Cannon driver. Looks kind of old.

  • Scanning with HP

    Is there an HP scan utility / download that I am missing? Perhaps something else?
    1) I installed OS X 10.6.4 via installation disk.
    2) When I installed it, I chose NOT to install the printer drivers and NOT to install printer drivers for printers close to me. At the time of install I did not have a printer connected to the machine.
    3) After OS X 10.6.4 install, still with no printer attached, I did the Software Update to OS X 10.6.5.
    4) Then I attached my HP Deskjet F4400 series All-In-One to the MBP via USB.
    5) Via Software Update, I installed The HP Driver Version is 2.3.1 (latest via Mac Software Update). Apple states: HP Deskjet F4400 series: 2.3.1 is able to Print and Scan (http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3669#HP).
    6) I am able to print and can scan using Mac's Print & Fax, and can scan via Mac's Print & Fax, Image Capture, and Preview.
    7) So, what is the problem?
    The scan feature, using Mac's Print & Fax, Image Capture, and Preview is rather "cumbersome" (see below) to configure to get a scan and I am wondering if this is a) just the nature of the OS X 10.6.5 scan, b) just the nature of the HP Deskjet F4400 series, c) just the nature of the driver, d) some combination of a, b c, or something I am not considering.
    To explain the idea of "cumbersome" I will describe a common scan task that I would like to accomplish:
    1) Load the document on the flatbed scanner (correctly aligned on the flatbed) - in this example I am trying to scan my AppleCare Protection Plan Certificate. I think it is a good example since it is on 8.5 x 11 paper, it has title case, letter format, with name, address, part number, a bar code, a table, and text, url, etc.
    2) From System Preferences, open Print & Fax, the HP Deskjet F4400 is listed, choose the Scan button, click Open Scanner. This takes me to the same scan window that I could also get to if using Image Capture, and Preview. The scanner 'warms up" and displays the AppleCare Protection Plan Certificate that I would like to scan (I am on the details page).
    3) This is where it is cumbersome. Now, despite altering the "Kind", "Resolution", or "Detect Separate Items" the scan will automatically pick out the table in the document and the size will auto-adjust to 6.75 x 0.55 inches (the size of the table that is automatically selected - but I don't want to scan the table, I want to scan the entire document).
    4) The only way I have found to capture / scan the entire document is to:
    a) Insert 8.5 x 11.0 in the size boxes (on the details page). This has the effect of selecting more of the document, but the document is cropped at the bottom - it is not selecting the entire 11.0" of the 8.5 x 11.0 of the actual document. If I attempt to put in 12 to replace the 11 (in hopes of capturing the entire document), then I get the message drop-down "The value ”12” is too big (Maximum value is 11.69333)." I discard the change and it is now back at 11.0.
    b) However, when I drag the bottom of the selected cropped image to the bottom of the document, the 11.0 now changes to 12.57 in the size box (- recall I could not just type anything greeter than 11.69333 as mentioned in the previous step - but now with the selection, it goes to the 12.57 - that just does not seem right).
    c) Now, I can click Scan and the image / document will get scanned (in this example - to ScanTest01.pdf in Documents).
    If I try to manipulate the above method in any other way (and I have tried many, many different approaches, toying around with the different options on the details page) then I will either get several scans (it will scan each "Detect Separate Items" and scan it to its own pdf - i.e. a pdf with just the table and a pdf with table and text) or a cropped scan. In the case of getting several scans, I really don't think I should be burdened with the "overhead" of going into Documents and deciding which one it is that I actually want and then deleting the others.
    In my opinion, it does not seem like I should have to tweak the scan settings so much just to get a "simple" document scan of a 8.5 x 11.0 document. I might be more appeased if I could set the size or other scan settings somewhere (i.e. if I need to keep it at 8.5 x 12.57 - select the entire page - something), but I have not been able to do that. I need to go through the entire - choose 8.5 x 11.0, drag the 11 to 12.57, scan - not ideal for one document - terrible if many documents need to be scanned.
    I noticed in other posts that some people refer to an HP Printer folder or an HP Scan utility. Apparently, I do not have one. I am wondering if I might get one if I download the entire HP Printer Drivers v.2.5.2 for Mac OS X v10.6 (http://support.apple.com/kb/DL907) and if this would "fix" the issues I am having. Normally, I would just give it a try, but really don't want to install a bunch of of drivers that I may not need, or may inadvertently add to the confusion of the issue at hand (that driver package contains the HP Driver Version is 2.3.1 that I have installed)
    I have also reset my printing system, emptied cache files, and re-added the printer / scanner, deleted it, added it, etc any number of times, with each trial of the scan, but does not seem to change anything as related above.
    I have been to the HP site, "How to Scan in Mac OS X 10.6 without Using HP Software" (http://h10025.www1.hp.com/ewfrf/wc/document?docname=c01910186&lc=en&dlc=en&cc=us &product=3837411#N202), which basically tells one to use the Print & Fax method.
    I have also read the HP Support document (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&task Id=115&prodSeriesId=3742084&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=3742084&objectID=c0184 6935) which clearly states:
    Scanning
    New with Snow Leopard, the Scanning interface to these HP Inkjet All-in-One devices is now built into Snow Leopard and supported with the Apple Image Capture application. There are three ways to perform scanning from your HP All-in-One:
    * Preview program
    * Image Capture program
    * System Preferences > Print & Fax
    and
    HP Utility
    The latest HP Utility is included in Mac OS X 10.6.
    So it seems like I should be fully setup for scanning - but if that is the case, then the scanning is not really ideal.
    Does anyone have any feedback on if this is all working as it is supposed to and I should expect it to be "cumbersome" or if there is something that I mentioned or am totally missing that I need to do or tweak to get past the "cumbersome" aspect of the process? Does anyone have better results with another printer? Thanks for any feedback.
    * Maybe in another post, but also related, I eventually got the ABBYY FineReader Express Edition for Mac. I was hoping this install (I need the searchable / have selectable text anyway) - installed after the above issues (which still remains) might bypass the cumbersome aspect. ABBYY FineReader will take the scanned files (pdfs) and make them searchable / have selectable text. However, it currently will not find my HP Deskjet F4400 as a source to scan from, so have to select the file after it is scanned from the above method. So far very pleased without their product, I have a support tick in with them to see what might be the case with that issue.

    Thanks Dale,
    I did review your post previously (did not mention it in the above manifesto ) but did not try it because when going through the process via the HP Support & Drivers site (http://welcome.hp.com/country/us/en/support.html), the only download available for the HP Deskjet F4400 was the "HP Deskjet Full Feature Software and Drivers - Mac OS X v10.4, v10.5, and v10.6", which, at the time, seemed a bit much just to get the HP Deskjet F4400 scanning to work well on OS X 10.6.5 and HP also says not to use it (see below).
    But now, thought it might be worth a try and did the following (first on a bootable clone):
    1) Reset the printing system
    2) Deleted the files under printers folder
    3) Deleted the hp plist file under preferences
    4) Downloaded and installed the "HP Deskjet Full Feature Software and Drivers - Mac OS X v10.4, v10.5, and v10.6" from the hp site
    5) Added back the printer
    6) At this point, if I went to Print & Fax, and tried to open the scanner, it would show "Trying to open scanner session" and then "Failed to open a session on this device"
    7) Did Software Update, which offered up the HP 2.5.2 drivers for the device, and installed these
    8) Then everything "worked"
    -- The Print & Fax scan still operates as above (rather poorly)
    -- The HP Scan works well (found under the newly installed HP folder under apps)
    -- The HP Deskjet F4400 shows up in the ABBYY FineReader (seems to offer better OCR than the IRIS software that HP uses)
    Yea! - So, apparently if you throw "everything" into the mix, it seems to work. It just seems odd that HP would state (http://h20000.www2.hp.com/bizsupport/TechSupport/Document.jsp?lang=en&cc=us&task Id=115&prodSeriesId=3742084&prodTypeId=18972&prodSeriesId=3742084&objectID=c0184 6935):

    And then give a big warning that says:
    Important: Please do not reinstall software from original HP Photosmart, Officejet, Deskjet CDs, or HP web downloads from previous Mac OS X 10.3, 10.4, or 10.5. Older software is not compatible with Snow Leopard. The latest Snow Leopard compatible software is included in Mac OS X 10.6, and you will experience the best performance and functionality if you use the latest HP software.
    Oddly enough, HP does have a link on the above page to get the the HP Scan application (despite their warning), but it resolves to a "We're very sorry! The page you requested can not be found."
    Well they should be sorry, even though things got to working, I went ahead and ordered a Canon PIXMA MX870 Wireless Office All-in-One Printer (sure it will have its own set of frustrations, just that after I got to looking at it, seamed nice and good time for new printer - will still keep the HP around)
    Now only if Airport Base Station would allow the ability to scan .

  • Canoscan LiDE 25 Only Scans at Low-Resolution

    Since upgrading to Snow Leopard, I can't get a high-res scan out of Image Capture with my Canoscan LiDE 25. I've downloaded the 11.031 drivers from Canon's site but didn't improve anything.
    I open image capture, choose the advanced options, let it run the overview scan, turn off the "Detect Separate Items" checkbox, resize the border to the part I want to scan, choose a scan location and filename, then turn up the resolution to 150 DPI. The scan runs really fast and then create a ~125 x 90 pixel image from the ~3" x 2" graphic I'm scanning. The same thing happens when I try to do a "Import from scanner" in Preview.
    The Canon tools don't work with the latest driver version; anyone have an idea about how to get high-res scans again? (Besides buying VueScan…)

    I know it's a great program — back when I worked in academic technology I convinced management to switch our computer labs to VueScan for both Mac and Windows.
    However, considering I scan maybe 3 times a year, it seems there should be a solution for basic scanning that doesn't require a $40 license.
