Detect the type of DisplayObject (Sprite, MovieClip, Bitmap etc).

Hello,
Is there a way to detect the type of a DisplayObject with a switch case statement?
I noticed that you can check if the displayobject compared to the type returns true or false.
Trace(mydisplayObj is Sprite); //return true or false
Trace(mydisplayObj is MovieClip); //return true or false
But isn't there an option to get the type of the displayObject directly?
like,
switch (typeof(mydisplayObj)) {
     case Sprite:
     break;
     case MovieClip:
     break;

Yes you can.
trace(getQualifiedClassName(mydispalyObj));
That will trace out the package and class name, so in your example you would get
flash.display::Sprite
flash.display::MovieClip
I thought there was one that gave just the class name without the package, but I can't remember or find it at the moment...
But that should help you out.

On the first issue about pictures.
* You can set Firefox to ask you where to save the file rather than always using the Downloads folder. This article describes how to set that: [[Startup, home page and download settings]].
* When you say "there is no place to indicate the type of file, such as jpg etc." is the problem that Facebook isn't including that in the file name and you need to add it? If you could explain this part a bit more.
* Another way to save pictures is to use the Page Info dialog. While on the page with the images, you can use either: * right-click and choose View Page Info > Media * Alt+t (open the classic Tools menu) > Page Info > Media As you scroll down the list, you can preview and use the Save As button to save those "hard to get" images.
On the second issue about videos.
* Do you see a gray space indicating that you need a plugin? Or does the video not play when you click it? Please explain what you're experiencing in a little more detail.
* In case you do not have the Flash player plugin for Firefox, you can get it here: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/ (make sure to uncheck any unwanted extras that Adobe might offer). If you do the download from IE, you won't get the right version. In that case, use this link to choose the non-IE plugin: http://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/otherversions/

Detecting the type of Internet Connection

Hi..
I am trying ... build an application that detects the kind of internet
connection (Dial-up, T1, DSL etc) that you are using and then disconnects it.
This application, must then send a response to a server-side program
containing information about the user and the connection type. This
application has to also trip the current connection if it is dial-up. Thats much later on, I first need to be able to detect the connection type.
I was was wondering whether there is some documentation/code samples about the same ?

The variety tools within the type tool, rectangle tool, pencil tool, etc. etc are not opening in my CS4 Illustrator

I recently re-installed my CS4 and am trying to reacquaint myself with the various applications.
Where I was previously able to access the various tool options, i.e. under the Text Tool, Rectangle Tool, Pencil Tool, etc. they are not opening now.
Any suggestions out there as to what could be the problem?

Are you saying that they do not fly out when you ClickHold hovering over the main tools (that is the Illy way)?
If that be the case, you may start looking at the list, maybe going straight to 6).
The following is a general list of things you may try when the issue is not in a specific file (you may have tried/done some of them already); 1) and 2) are the easy ones for temporary strangenesses, and 3) and 4) are specifically aimed at possibly corrupt preferences); 5) is a list in itself, and 6) is the last resort.
1) Close down Illy and open again;
2) Restart the computer (you may do that up to 3 times);
3) Close down Illy and press Ctrl+Alt+Shift/Cmd+Option+Shift during startup (easy but irreversible);
4) Move the folder (follow the link with that name) with Illy closed (more tedious but also more thorough and reversible);
5) Look through and try out the relevant among the Other options (follow the link with that name, Item 7) is a list of usual suspects among other applications that may disturb and confuse Illy, Item 15) applies to CC, CS6, and maybe CS5);
Even more seriously, you may:
6) Uninstall, run the Cleaner Tool (if you have CS3/CS4/CS5/CS6/CC), and reinstall.

Detecting the type of Image added to SWF

I am adding an image dynamically to my SWF. Is it possible to figure out that whether the uploaded image is black & white or gray-scale or colored?

There are surely different, and possibly better, ways to do this, but this has worked pretty reliably for me before. I just take a diagonal strip of pixels and compare the rgb values. If the rgb components of any pixel vary too much it's pretty guaranteed it's a color pixel - a grayscale pixel's components are all pretty much the same - ie 100,100,100 vs something like 100,10,0 in a red tinted pixel...

PS C309a printer detecting paper type

PS C309a; Windows Windows 7; USB wired.
Is there a way to override the printer detecting the type of paper being used? My printer canceled the print job, because the paper didn't match its detection.

What paper type did you specify? Are you feeding from the main tray or the photo tray? Does the paper have a printed border?

How do I stop the type from bitmapping?

I updated my website to iweb 08 and had to rebuild various pages. but the biggest bad surprise was that while the type in the hyperlinks in the earlier version worked fine, now they are bitmapped. and it seems on some pages my type is all bad. it's like I don't have the typeface loaded or something (design elements are shifting and there are weird spaces here and there). but I checked fontbook and I do have it up and running…
also, my drop shadows on picture boxes with drop shadows are dropping off when the site gets published.
any thoughts?

I'm seeing something odd, too. I have a lengthy text block that ends up measuring about 36,000 pixels vertically. Inside is just Ariel text. I've applied some color, italics, and boldface here and there, but no drop shadow effects, outline effects, or anything else that should generate the very plainest HTML. Yet, iWeb keeps attempting to convert this block to a .PNG file, and failing due to the size. The error I receive when I attempt to publish to a folder is "Can't create the file 'shapeimage2_link0.png.' The disk may be damaged or full, or you may not have sufficient access privileges." I have about 32GB free on my disk, and the test folder just resides on my desktop.
I was able to create the page over again, cutting and pasting the text from the huge block into a new text block on the new page. Then I deleted the problem page. It published a few times without a problem. After making some edits to a different page in a different site, however, the same problem returned, and iWeb again decided that text block needed to be an image.
Bizarre.
Looks like I can't dump BBEdit just yet...

How do I detect the data type of a node?

Hello all,
I have a few quick questions about using Schema with XDK. I hope someone can answer this for me.
1) How do I detect the datatype of a node? I need to be able to detect if it is date/time, number or boolean
2) How do I then parse the string into date, number, etc. ?
3) Does Oracle SOAP also support this kind of thing? (ie. detecting the data type of a node and then parsing it?)
4) Does XDK support inline schema?

So are you saying that it is not possible or not easy to detect the typed value data type of a node? In past years, I have had experience with converting based on what looks like a number and it is impossible to safely assume something is a number just because it looks like one. For example a Product ID could be: 14E1 which many routines would detect as a scientific notation number. This is why I need to be able to detect the data type.
But I am no Schema expert, but my understanding of schema is that simple types have standard designations. I think it is something like xsd:string or xsd:number, etc. But no matter what parser I look at them all seem to be implemented the same way and I can't figure out with any of them how to detect the datatype and then parse it appropriately. But it should be possible since it is written into the schema.
Since I'm using Jdev I'm hoping that the Oracle XDK can do this, if not does anyone know of any good parsers that can? I'm having trouble even locating validating parsers. Aside from Oracles all I could find were IBMs and Xerces which both seem to be based on the same thing anyhow.
Help or pointers in the right direction would be much appreciated since I have been struggling with this seemingly simple task for a long time.

Detecting the host application type

I have a plug-in for Acrobat Professional. Is there any way for this plug-in to determine the host application like if it is running inside a Acrobat Professional or inside a browser container etc?
I need to know this becasuse my plug-in is causing the browsers to crash whenever they open PDF files. My idea is to detect the host for my app and abort loading the plug-in if it is not full blows Acrobat app.

You don't need to!
When you create your toolbar button, don't add EXTERNAL to the parameters you pass it.
How else is your plugin invoked other than button (see above) or menu (not present)?

[noob question] whats the best way to load movieclips with a loading screen

for each level i have a number of movieclips bitmaps and sprites etc.. should i just load multiple swf's of everything in my level or keep all objects in the library and call upon them in the main fla
this is for a mobile game btw.
I have a loading screen.png file also, how do i know when each item is finished loading to stop the loading screen image?

If you have money to spend, I would recommend using Oracle's Application Test Suite (ATS) since it is the only test tool I know of that allows you to create a functional test and then convert it to a load test. The capabilities of this tool are pretty amazing considering that it is a single tool where the go to toolset in the past was Win Runner / Load Runner. With Win Runner, you needed 50 machines (or VMs) if you wanted to generate front end load for 50 users. With ATS, you record a script with your browser, and then convert it into a load test. You can adjust things like think time, ramp up time, sustained load, etc.
What a lot of people miss is that testing tools can be used indefinitely, not just for getting through a migration. If you script your tests appropriately (which means that your user base trusts them), you can use them for every code release because it takes very little effort to run a test script. On top of that, you can set up strategically placed machines around your network that are set up to run a specific test script (think of a common transaction) so that performance metrics can be captured. I worked for a company that had 160 locations around the world and we used our testing tool as a performance monitor in the locations with the worst performance. Having a tool allowed us to see whether our performance issues were related to network, database, app servers, etc. This took the burden of explaining performance issues off of the users. Most users can't really articulate what the problems are anyway (and they aren't expected to).
If budget is an issue, you can use JMeter from Apache, which will give you the load testing capability but you will miss out on the excellent reporting and management capabilities of the Oracle Application Test Suite.

APPLE/DEVS Read this! Windows 7 CAN'T detect the iPhone 5s but iTunes CAN detect it! WEIRD, huh?!..

just a summary...
i have a iphone 3G which i have been using for a long time and now i got an iphone 5s.. troubleshooting this kind of stuff is not new to me from computers to smartphones.. the internet has a vast majority of information and all you need to do is type in the right "KEYWORD".. i'm that kind of guy that looks for the answer before i try to look on it on my own.. i'm a DIY kind of guy as long as there is an instruction on how to do it..
now, back to the topic..
so i was trying to copy some of my pictures on my iphone 5s to my PC for backup purposes and to see the quality of the images but the portable device doesn't show up unlike my iphone 3G which is f***ing WEIRD.. been tinkering with this over the past 5 days since i have nothing to do and testing the new features of this phone but to no avail.. searched all over the internet but still none..
so last night, i was really determined since i can't sleep and also connected my iphone 3G to my PC while the iphone 5s is connected.. so here is what shows up on my devices and printers and device manager..
i can totally see the pics on my iphone 3G but not on my iphone 5s.. totally amazing.. good job apple!
the picture under devices shows my iphone 3G and the other 2 on unspecified is my iphone 5s.. the iPhone under there is being used as my source of internet since this is tethered so i can have access and post this in here so that APPLE will know how f***ed up their SOFTWARE is is..
so i downloaded itunes a couple of times, and i can't remember how many already, i think 5 times or more and then uninstalled all apple softwares (itunes, apple application support, apple mobile device support and etc as long as there is apple in it) and then reinstalled itunes but still none..
so i went on device manager removed my iphone 3G and the only one that would show there is the Apple Mobile Device USB driver under USB controllers..
and then i uninstalled the driver, looked for the driver myself by just it doesn't show up in here where you are directed to look for the driver and oh im using 64 bit just so everyone knows and i already found out that my system is using the usbaapl64.sys file in windows>system32>drivers..
so last night i installed, reinstalled itunes and then suddenly my drive D: was gone and i received an error or a "!" on my drive and my drive is not being detected.
Error: windows cannot start this hardware device because its configuration information (in the registry) is incomplete or damage. (code 19).
i unstalled the driver in device manager and then scan hardware changes, updated the driver automatically and manually and it is saying that i have the latest hardware but i can't use my DVD drive with the error on it..

so i then uninstalled my itunes, uninstalled my driver and then updated it and "walla!". i can see my DVD drive again. i am using iTunes64Setup v12.0.1.26 just so everyone knows and this setup can detect both my iphones and my iphone 5s is using the latest version which is iOS 8.1.2..
after reinstallation of itunes my DVD drive can be seen and just noticed how APPLE SOFTWARES are so ****** up.. CAUSING A LOT OF TROUBLE AND DAMAGES..
so going back to the topic..
i was able to find a way (AFTER HOW MANY HOURS of TROUBLESHOOTING) on how my iphone 5s was able to detect the portable device or should i say the images on my iphone 5s where the autoplay pops up and everything..
so i went on device manager, uninstalled apple mobile device USB driver, disconnected my iphone 5s, UNLOCKED my iphone 5s, connected it to my PC, clicked on TRUST this PC, on my PC the sound for a USB being connected sounded, and at the bottom right, automatically installed the drivers and then the autoplay popped up with the matching PORTABLE DEVICES on COMPUTER where i can browse the internal storage and the pictures..
so now i opened iTunes and BOOOM!
iTunes doesn't detect my iphone 5s but i can browse on the images on my phone..
so again i went to device manager, uninstalled the driver for apple iphone under portable devices, scanned for hardware changes, updated the driver manually by selecting drive C: so it would automatically find the correct drive..
so now, my iphone can be detected by itunes but not on my COMPUTER.. see how ****** UP this is?!.. JEEEEEEEEEZ!!
Now i finally found the SOLUTION on how to do this and vice versa.. UNTIL APPLE decides to FIX their SOFTWARE/DRIVER issues..
if you want to scan or browse the images on your iphone 5s on your computer all you need to do is do this:
[for those who don't know how to reach this part, here is a GUIDE on how to open this is: click on the device > click on update driver software > browse my computer for driver software > let me pick from a list of device drivers on my computer]
and then you will see the screen below
click on MTP USB Device and then click on Next, after it finishes installing the drivers, your PC will automatically detect a new portable device but in order for you to access the images you need to go back on your phone, unlock it if it lock automatically and then click on "TRUST" and then you can now see the images..
BUT the problem here is that your iPhone can't be detected on iTunes...
now, if you want to go back to where your phone can be detected on itunes, just follow these steps:
click on apple mobile device USB driver, click on Next and then wait for your computer to finish the installation and then you will hear the beeping sound. check your phone, unlock it, then click on "TRUST", and then go to iTunes and you will now see your iPhone there but not on your PC where you can browse for the images..
SEE HOW THIS DRIVERS are so ****** up.. i wish i hadn't started using this ****** UP OS with all the BUGS and GLITCHES.. JEEEZ! and to think, these DEVICES are not CHEAP compared to Android devices on the market.. it's just because of how these people go with the trend that they purchase these kind of stuff and the only thing they use it for is calling or texting.. i, for once use this not for calling or texting but also for the apps that it has like the games, ebooks and etc when im bored..
i HOPE the Apple DEVS read this and find the solution on the drivers which is so ****** UP and so LAME!!
PS: i hope a lot of people who are having the same issue as what i had find this and help them with their concern even though this is not a permanent solution.. it is just a work around for folks that are looking for answers and solution.

How do you stop an MBP headphone-in from constantly re-detecting input type?

I'm a professional music producer - I work for majors.
I only use "regular" ("studio quality") headphones in my MBP, for reference on-the-move.
I have had the same issue on two consecutive MBP's now.
Every time there is the slightest movement or slight strain on the jack - the MBP silences the input (and, I assume tries to detect what type of input there is at the socket). This can happen when adjusting the MBP in ones lap, table... it can happen at every movement of machine or cable.
The jack doesn't have to visibly move. I have to take out the jack wait a second and re-insert. This doesn't even work every time.
So: How does one manually set and lock the input type?

I don't think that it is a 'feature' my bet is on 'failure' instead.
I think that the connection between the 3 pole connector on your studio quality headphones (a model would be nice to know) and the 4 pole socket on the Mac is not good. Can you reproduce this with a standard pair of Apple earbuds (a test only) or is it limited to whatever your headphones are?
I will also suggest a USB interface, they are very small (put it in your pocket, buy 2) the Logitech version is in the picture below.
If you do choose the 3.5mm to USB option this one (Turtle Beach Amigo II) is the best I have used.
Requiring no drivers (on a Mac) it sounds at least as good as the internal audio does.

[SOLVED]mpd does not detect the music directory

I recently installed mpd with the gmpc gui, set my "music_directory" in /etc/mpd.conf to the location of all of my music (which contains lots of other folders and subfolders), but there's no listing of the audio files in the database in gmpc.
Here's the /etc/mpd.conf if that helps:

*sigh* i answer this for the 3rd time in a row... this is no error it just says that binding to your ipv6 interface happened before the binding to ipv4.
If you want to use your ipv4 interface hardcode it in mpd.conf
bind_to_address "127.0.0.1"
you can also have several binds:
bind_to_address "127.0.0.1"
bind_to_address "192.168.1.13"
to make it listen on localhost and the external IP of your network card.
If your music is on the same machine as your mpd i recommend to use a unix socket in addition.
bind_to_address "/path/to/some/file/that/does/not/exist/yet"
and make your client connect to that file instead of the IP. Speeds things up a log e.g. in ncmpcpp
and btw: you can save your mpd.conf file as ~/.mpdconf and mpd will automatically use it.

Adobe pop-up message when trying to install a program: "Failed to initialize. File not found. Please download Adobe Support Advisor to detect the problem."

I have a 64-bit Windows 7 Home Premium PC. I recently had to reinstall my PC. I'm trying to install my Adobe Products like Flash Professional CS5 and Photoshop CS5, but it keeps coming up with the message "Failed to initialize. File not found. Please download Adobe Support Advisor to detect the problem." I keep looking around at different sites, but they seem so difficult and so much information which leaves me so confused. I have no idea how or why this has happened, and due to my autism it leaves me very panicky.
I've tried the Adobe Creative Cloud Cleaner Tool. Here are the results.

Detecting file type in vba for word

I have directories full of files on a Mac. Most of these files are Doc files, some Txt files and some other types. Unfortunately the files don't have file extensions (not hidden but actually no file extensions). On a PC in a macro I need to open
these doc files (from the Mac) and do some manipulations on the files and then save them. I have a macro which works as long as all the files are Doc files so if I can detect the file type in my macro I can skip the non-Doc files and process only
the Doc files.
Is there a way in a vba for word macro to detect a file type other than by the file extension? Or if that can't be done can I put error trapping on my Open statement that will catch an attempt to Open a non-Doc type file?

If your code is running on Windows and you are in a position to install software on it, you
may be able to get reasonably reliable detection using dsofile.dll, which you can get here:
I really do not know whether it will work with files stored or create on Mac (and in any case, if these are old Mac .doc files, you may find that Windows Word cannot open them anyway.
You need to
- register the dll via regsvr32
- in VBE, use Tools->References... to make a reference to"DSO OLE Document Properties Reader 2.1"
- use code such as the sample below.

You may also find that the value of the property I am checking varies and that you need to look at other things, such as
objDocumentProperties.SummaryProperties.ApplicationName
but that value definitely varies according to the version of Word used to create the .doc, so you would need to discover what values it can have in a valid .doc.
