Detected but malfunctioned

My iPod has not had a software update in sometime. Today I attempted to download & install an update. It appeared however that itunes returned with the error with the updating.
Subsequently, nothing appeared in the ipod drive (and itunes doesn't detect the ipod anymore). Everything appeared dead. Attempting to eject, the ipod remains frozen with the screen "do not disconnect". I am unable to even turn it off. No reaction with all buttons including "hold" and unhold.
Reconnecting, vista detects the ipod as an unknown USB device. After checking, I was told that the "unknown device" has malfunctioned and the ipod did not appear under the list. Itunes also does not detect the ipod still.
So... yeah. What is there that can be done? I am unable to have itunes detect the ipod and so I'm also unable to have the ipod restored.

best bet is to let it die out plug it in later when battery dead and then if it still. then restore it. if still no detect it turn hold on then off then hold select and menu until u c the apple logo then plug it into the computer u use to add music to the ipod.if that doesnt help dont no what will. I upgraded to 11.1.14.62 this morning.  Not iTunes is saying "An iPod had been detected but could not be identified properly".  I unlugged/replugged in.  I reset the iPod, I removed iTunes and reinstalled.  I'ver tried three different cables.
When I put the iPod in disk mode it shows up briefly as a disk then goes away.
    Any ideas?

Hi there  - I've spoken with Apple and here is their response (worked for me). You need to uninstall not only iTunes, but also (in this order):
    1) iTunes
    2) Apple Software Update
    3) Apple Mobile Device Support
    4) Bonjour
    5) Apple Application Support
    Then you restart your computer.
Then you install the latest version of iTunes (which will reinstall all those things you uninstalled).
Then you restart your computer again.
Mine is working perfectly again now.
I hope it works for you,
    Carmen.

    Error 1604
This error is often related to USB timing. Try changing USB ports, using a different dock connector to USB cable, and other available USB troubleshooting steps (troubleshooting USB connections. If you are using a dock, bypass it and connect directly to the white Apple USB dock connector cable. If the issue persists on a known-good computer, the device may need service.
If the issue is not resolved by USB isolation troubleshooting, and another computer is not available, try these steps to resolve the issue:
Connect the device to iTunes, confirm that the device is in Recovery Mode. If it's not in Recovery Mode, put it into Recovery Mode.
Restore and wait for the error.
    When prompted, click OK.
Close and reopen iTunes while the device remains connected.
The device should now be recognized in Recovery Mode again.
    Try to restore again.
If the steps above do not resolve the issue, try restoring using a known-good USB cable, computer, and network connection.
    Error 1600, 1601, 1602
Follow the steps listed above for Error 1604. This error may also be resolved by disabling, deactivating, or uninstalling third-party security, antivirus, and firewall software. See steps in this article for details on troubleshooting security software.

  • Itunes states "ipod detected but could not be identified properly" when I plug in my new nano. tried uninstalling/reinstalling itunes 6 times - get pop-up "itunes helper error" with abort, retry, ignore options. retry doesn't work

I am trying to connect my new nano to my iTunes account. I keep getting msg "ipod detected but not identified properly. disconnect and reconnect. if problem persists uninstall/reinstall iTunes". I've uninstalled/ reinstalled iTunes 6 times but keep getting the same msg.
when installing iTunes I get a pop-up "iTunes helper error" check access. with options to abort, retry, ignore. retry doesn't work. ignore installs iTunes but it doesn't recognize my nano. abort shuts down the download.

  • IPod Nano 7 Gen is detected but not identified by iTunes on HP Windows 8

I own an iPod Nano 7 Gen and an HP computer with Windows 8. Ever since I installed the iTunes update back in November of 2014 my iPod has not functioned with iTunes. Whenever I plug it into my computer I receive an error message that reads "An iPod has been detected, but it could not be identified properly. Please disconnect and reconnect the iPod, then try again. If the problem persist uninstall iTunes, then install iTunes again." I have done all that the alert message has told me and even restarted my iPod. Has anyone found a simple solution to this problem?
