Detecting color on page - at page or document level

Need: Color Digital Print Workflow - CSRs reviewing a "print ready" pdf see black only pages and price jobs assuming pages contain no color, but elements such as RGB black, Registration black, and rich CMYK blacks print as color at the printer's risk. Page level color detection would be a great option for the Preflight feature to help ensure accurate pricing by CSRs who are generally not comfortable inside of PDFs. Example of report would be similar to: Document contains 15 pgs color and 6 pages grey, detail: Color - Pg 1-5,8,12,18-21 Grey - pg 6-7,9-11,13-17 This could be a good quick reference for job estimating and planning, and locating issues before submission. Digital workflows are generally low margin and quick turn; this feature could help keep these jobs from the costly prepress cost center.

You need to use preflight to evaluate the document. You could set up a special preflight task to do what you are asking I think. I do not remember seeing you ask a question in the forum. You need to ask there before requesting a new feature for a future edition of Acrobat.

  • How to detect color pages in a PDF?

    I am using a C++ Acrobat plug-in do read/edit a PDF file.
    I need to get the total number of pages in the PDF as well as the page numbers of color pages.
    So far I have been able to get the total number of pages using PDDocGetNumPages() without any trouble.
    However, I cant seem to find an API that lets me know whether a particular page is color or not. Is there a way to do this?
    Thanks in advance!

    But what if there is RGB data that means black or gray (R == G == B), does that mean black or RGB?
    There is some sample code in the SDK for iterating over the content in the PDF, and then you can get the colorspace and the color of each object.
    But you really need to do some background research on colors & colorspaces to properly achieve this goal.

  • Mavericks Pages 5 documents won't open

    I upgraded to Mavericks a few days ago. I have documents that were created in Pages ’09 that will no longer open. (Some will, and I don’t know what the difference is) When I try to open one, it either opens, no problem, or I get the message “The required index.xml file is missing”. This message is in a rectangle with an icon representative of Pages ’09 (the inkwell). Since it has this icon, I’m assuming that I was trying to open it in the ’09 version, which is what I intended to do. Since this didn’t work, I tried to “open with Pages.app (4.0.5)” and got the same message. I’m a little afraid to try to open it in Pages 5, since I’ve heard rumors that this could ruin the document. I’m at a loss, and, like everybody else, I have important documents that I need access to. After I upgraded I had both Pages ’09 and Pages 5 on my dock, instead of one of them being in the applications folder. I have looked briefly at pages 5 and determined that I prefer ’09. They are both still in my dock but I never open Pages 5. I’m using an iMac with 10.9.4. All my documents are in Pages ’09 and I want to open them in Pages ’09. What to do?

    Having two versions of Pages on your Mac is a royal pain. The correct version of Pages '09 for Mavericks is v4.3. Apple has a downloadable update here. I am current with both, including Pages v5.2.2. Your opening errors may be due to that Pages v4.0.5 running on Mavericks and needing a newer v4.3. Run Disk Utility from /Applications/Utilities after updating Pages ’09 per above, and verify/repair your permissions.
    I have dragged and dropped Pages '09 from /Applications/iWork '09, and Pages v5.2.2 from /Applications onto my Dock, so the icons are adjacent. You should drag and drop each of your Pages Dock icons out on to your Desktop about two inches and release them to remove them from the Dock. Don't worry, these are aliases to the real applications. Now drag/drop each of the Pages applications back onto the Dock as I have done. You will now know exactly where these icons point back to the individual application locations.
    In System Preferences > Security & Privacy (click the gold lock), under Allow apps downloaded from: mine is set to Mac App Store and identified developers. I am wondering if you have FileVault enabled for your boot drive? I have never seen your dialog as posted, so try my settings.
    With both applications installed on your Mac, you can only open Pages ’09 documents as follows, and double-click will always open them in Pages v5+.
    Launch Pages ’09, and open the document via the application File chooser
    Right-click on the ’09 document, and from the Open With sub-menu, select Pages (v4.n)
    Drag and drop the ’09 document onto the Pages ’09 Dock icon.
    Pages v5.2+ will open a Pages ’09 document without asking if you want too. As Pages v5.2+ is about 110 features/functionality less than Pages ’09 v4.3, it will also silently filter content from your ’09 documents as it opens them. This has been a catastrophe for those without backups.
    For forward organizational purposes, I would recommend that you create a custom tag name and color in Finder Preferences for explicit identification of your Pages ’09 documents. You can change this color and tag name in the open document title when you roll over the file name. Then you have both a visual clue to avoid opening these in Pages v5+, and the tag name allows you to use an Finder Window, or Spotlight search on that name to exclusive find Pages ’09 documents. Here is an example of a Finder tag: Pages search:

  • Inserting Clip Art In A Pages 09 Document

    How do you insert clip art in to a Pages 09 document? I am new to iWork after using Appleworks for many years. I have many CDs of Nova Art Explosion Clip Art that I want to use in my documents. I can not seem to find any information on how to insert clip art. All help greatly appreciated.

    John,
    Just to let you know Pages does not use .wmf and .pict is mostly history now.
    *The main formats that Pages will use are:*
    .jpeg, jpeg2000, .tif, .png, .gif, .pdf and .ai saved with .pdf preview.
    Of the *Nova Art Explosion Clip Art* the most useful will be the vector .eps files which Pages will convert to .pdf when imported.
    *Best is to open and convert the .eps clipart in Preview*
    Which does several things:
    1. It converts them to .pdf
    2. It converts them to color managed cmyk
    3. It shrinks the image selection to the image's bounding box ie gets rid of all the background and only selects the image.
    4. As long as there is no opaque background drawn as part of the clipart, you will have a transparent background.
    5. It will save the file as a very small .pdf file
    6. The pdf file will be viewable in Finder on the *Icon Preview* or in CoverFlow, also when you view it in your *Open dialog box*.
    *There are 4 ways to import the clipart*
    1. Drag and drop it into Pages from Finder.
    If you drop it into text it will become an inline graphic and act as it it was a character in the text, moving with the text.
    If you drop it on a non-text area it will create its own image box and fill it.
    If you drag it onto an image placeholder box it will either neatly fit into the image box or be cropped, however the box has been set-up.
    2. You can use +Menu > Import > Choose… > browse to image > select > OK+ This will drop the image into the middle of your page view at its original size in its own image box.
    3. You can make a collection of clipart in a named folder then drag that folder into the top pane of the Media Browser:
    +Menu > View > Show Media Browser > Photos+
    When you click on the folder in the Media Browser the contents will be displayed in the preview window underneath from where they can be dragged into the Pages layout or onto image boxes.
    4. Pages has something called Shapes which you can add by going to the Shapes menu on the window Toolbar. These are native Pages drawings. They can be scaled, colored and contain text or images which are cropped by the shape.
    Right at the bottom of the Shapes menu is a pen tool which lets you draw your own shapes, however it is one of the worst drawing tools I have encountered on the Mac.
    Shapes can be imported from .svg files. .svg is an open vector or vector + bitmap file format readable directly in most *Web Browsers*. Unfortunately they are not directly supported in Pages, but they can be imported using svg2key into Keynote as shapes, from where they can be cut and pasted into Pages.
    OmniGraffle has sets of clipart called Stencils, these can be cut and pasted into Keynote and possibly into Pages, but requires you to have a copy of OmniGraffle on your machine.
    A great deal of commercial and free clipart is available on the Net, much of it substantially better than the crude, cheap looking Nova material which was mostly "sourced" from PC clipart nad has that sort of style and color palette.
    ClipArt can be very good and can be very bad, make sure you select the appropriate style and format for your work. You can scour through the Nova collection for the few good examples and make your own selection converted to useful formats such as .pdf and keep them in labelled folders which you can then select from previews using large *Icon View* or CoverFlow in Finder.
    You can also copy and paste clipart from AppleWorks.

  • PMS colors in Pages?

    Does anyone know if there is a way that I can select/use PMS colors in my Pages ('09) documents? We have quite a few forms/documents that have been previously created in Quark. As we update them, I am recreating them in Pages, and I want the colors to be consistent with what we've had before. Any suggestions?
    Thanks,
    Jay

    I'm not so much concerned about print production issues as I am about document-creation issues.
    So document preparation is nothing to do with print production?? That's new.
    I want to at least be able to match PMS colors because our logos and other graphic elements are specific PMS colors, and I'd like to be able to do more that just eyeball them to get the same colors when I recreate the documents in Pages.
    Do you want to match the COLOUR or do you want to print a custom COLOURANT? You will not match the COLOUR if you print a custom COLOURANT, that is, you will not match the colour of your Pantone swatch if you specify a Pantone in your document.
    Surprised? Don't be. Pantone is specified for 100% solid ink, a certain tone value increase, and a certain lightness and tint of paper. If you don't print 100% solid, on the same paper, with the same tone value increase, you don't get the colour match.
    If you want to match the COLOUR, first, determine and download the ICC PRTR Printer profile for your intended printing condition, and second, determine the closest process combination using the CIELa*b for the Pantone solid in a colourimetric match.
    You have been able to do this for a decade with the free download of the functioning ColorPicker in GretagMacbeth ProfileMaker 4 and higher or GretagMacbeth Eye-One Match. Before that you could do something of the same with the X-Rite ColorShop software.
    Adobe Photoshop has had CIELa*b data for solid Pantones for some time, too.
    If you design with Pantones and save into Adobe page description models whether Encapsulated PostScript or Portable Document Format, the Pantones will be name-referenced in the page descriptions and will stay that way when placed in Apple Pages.
    But whether you would want Pantones in the first place is another matter.

  • How to detect when a page is in view with jQuery or javaScript?

    Is there a way a detect when a page is in view? Currently it seems that my document ready function is being called when the page is the next or previous page as well as the current page. Seems that this gets called twice... is there a reliable way to detect this?

    I ran into this alot. first thing is that when you are looking at a particular page, DPS is caching the pages around it, all around it, so it caches the top, right, bottom and left pages, which will launch things and play videos and what not.
    Here's the workaround for getting it to only launch when in view. set the autoplay time (I assume this is for a "webcontent overlay") to .125 seconds. it will start the clock only when the page (tile) is in view.
    don't know if theres an easier way, but that's how I do it and it works.

    hello prgc37, you original problem was likely caused by a fault extension that you have installed. can you try to [[Reset Firefox – easily fix most problems|reset firefox]] and see if this can address the issue...
    otherwise such connection issues are also often caused by a firewall/security software which doesn't recognize & therefore blocks new firefox versions. please remove all program rules for firefox from your firewall and let it detect the new version of the browser again.

  • How Apply Paper Swatch color on page

    Hi Experts
    I want to apply Paper Swatch color on page.
    I try this to set Paper Swatch color but not sucess.
    #target indesign
    var myDocument = app.documents.add();
    var myPages = myDocument.pages;
    var myPage = myPages.item(0);
    var swatchclr=app.activeDocument.swatches.itemByName("Paper").properties = {space:ColorSpace.RGB, model:ColorModel.PROCESS};
    swatchclr.colorValue=[255,150,0];
    There is no change in Paper Swatch color value.
    How apply this color on page ?
    Thanks.

    Hi,
    Watch this line ("=" repeated):
    swatchclr       =       app.activeDocument.swatches.itemByName("Paper").properties      =     {space:ColorSpace.RGB, model:ColorModel.PROCESS};
    swatchclr.colorValue=[255,150,0];
    So swatchclr is a swatch.properties not a swatch.
    Make it:
    swatchclr       =       app.activeDocument.swatches.itemByName("Paper");
    swatchclr.properties      =     {space:ColorSpace.RGB, model:ColorModel.PROCESS, colorValue:[255,150,0]};

  • Acrobat XI Pro Won't Convert 206 Page Word Document into PDF

    Hi there
    As menetioned above, Acrobat XI Pro Won't Convert my 206 Page Word Document into a PDF.  The Word document was originally a PDF file that I converted to Word and it has split all the text into sections.
    It sounds like converting a PDF into Word isn't the best way to edit, re-format and then save as a PDF again.  I would love to hear your advice on this.
    Thanks very much for your help!
    Fiona

    First before you recreate the PDF from the Word Document.
    In word: Open Document
    Next open a new Blank docment
    switch back to Word click on the ¶ button
    scroll to of go to very end of docment.
    click just to right of the perion in the last sentence.
    now go to very beginning of document
    Hold down the Shift and click to the right of first letter in document.
    Now choose copy.
    Now switch to Blank document
    Choose Paste special.
    Now choose Text only.
    If works all the words will be there spaced correct but with no ¶'s.
    Now insert returns as desired.
    Now save as a docx file under a different name.
    IF you are on a Mac use the following directions:
    go to File menu > Print > PDF Hold down PDF button until Context menu pops up.
    Choose adobe PDF.
    follow steps when the first window opens.
    Save as PDF in desired location.
    Now open the PDF in Acrobat. Document should be properly formatted and ready to go.
    AS you've found The conversion is not seamless. Acrobat doesn't distingish between automatic end of line breaks and Returns and you have to put the pieces back again.  I wish Adobe and MS would get over the jealouscy of each other and share howcode works so Thatapplications could work seamlessly together.  BUt they never will.

  • Can't open Pages 09 document

    Like many others on this post, I also cannot open a very important Pages 09 document built using mainly blank pages and a couple of standard Page Layout Templates.
    It is 80 pages of colour photos with captions, totalling 1.7 GB. I saved everything successfully and kept it on my EHD, but now I can't open it, even when copied back to my laptop. The message simply says it can't be opened, with no indication why.
    If I used too much capacity, why does the system not warn me?
    I can see the document through the ".pages Info" Preview thumbnail section, and can click through each page. However, although the document is set to "Open with: Pages.app" when I double-click on the preview, I get the same "can't open" message.
    Can anyone help please?

    Sounds as a corrupted file.
    Two tracks:
    (1) if the document is stored as a flatfile,
    rename it as xxx.pages.zip.
    Double click to expand.
    You will get a package entitled xxx.pages
    Like with every package, control + click to get "Show Package Contents"
    You will get a window showing
    a folder named Contents
    a file named index.xml (or index.xml.gz if the doc was stored as a package)
    the files corresponding embedded pictures
    a folder named QuickLook
    In this one you will get a file entitle Preview.pdf
    Open it with Preview.
    I assume that you will be able to copy the text contents and paste it in a new sane Pages document.
    With the displayed pdf, it will be quite easy to rebuild the original
    (2) attach the doc to a mail
    send them to my mailbox.
    I will do the surgery for you and will send the document to Apple Bugs Hunters to give them a new example of corrupted document to help them to find what is wrong in the program.

  • Is there a way to open Pages 09 documents in Yosemite?

    Hi. I upgraded to Yosemite last year. But today I realized I needed to open some Pages 09 documents. They won't open in the newer, latest version of Pages. I can view the contents of the documents in the Finder via Cover Flow — so I think it's crazy that they can't be opened with the newer Pages.
    Anyway, I had deleted iWork 09 after I upgraded to Yosemite. I tried to reinstall Pages 09 from an older back up but when I tried to launch the application, it never opened.
    So I'm just wondering if there are any workarounds to opening the  Pages 09 documents under Yosemite.
    Thanks.
    Mirsky

    Lanny, thanks for the quick reply. I guess now I don't remember which version of Pages I used to create my old documents. I thought I'd used Pages 09.
    When I double-click my old Pages documents, the latest version of Pages opens with the following message:
    "This document can't be opened because it's too old.
    To open it, save with Pages '09 first."
    Then there is a Cancel button and Open in Pages '09 button."
    But it seems like Pages 09 won't run under Yosemite.

  • How do i combine single pages into documents with Adobe?

    How do i combine single pages into documents with Adobe?

    Hi zebideeplus,
    Using Reader, you need to purchase subscription for Adobe PDF Pack  to combine PDF files into single document.
    Refer: Acrobat.com Help | Adobe PDF Pack FAQ
    But, if you need to combine single pages, then it can be done with Adobe Acrobat only.
    Let me know if you have further queries.

  • Cannot open Pages 09' documents in Pages 08'

    Just and FYI for everyone. If you save a Pages 09' document as a Pages 09' document you cannot open it up in Pages 08'. Keep this in mind if you are using the trial and decide not to upgrade.

    Most of the files you create in Pages '09 won't use any new features so saving them in Pages '08 format doesn't lose anything and lets more people open the file.
    In fact, every Pages '08 document that you open and save in Pages '09 becomes undeditable in Pages '08 +even if you did not edit/add anything+. That's just silly.
    Most applications that have multiple versions with different file formats at least try to cause as little disruption as possible between users of different versions of the same application.
    For example, in Adobe products you are asked each time you save if you want your file to be compatible with older versions. MS Office offers total control over format (described above) including the sense to save your file in the same format it was when it was opened (unless this is made impossible by the user including new features). Both companies also offer file translation utilities to let you open new files in older versions.
    Both of these methods are superior to what happens in iWork because they allow you to use new features, but only save the file in a format incompatible with a previous version when it's unavoidable.
    Working in Pages '09 and trying to ensure backward comaptibility with friends or collegues that you may need to share files with, is very painful: endlessly creating multiple copies of the same file (all with the same icon and file extension!)
    I really like Pages, but this 'upgrade trap' is a real disincentive to upgrade and makes me think twice about telling people to try it.

  • Open Pages '08 Document with Pages

    A client recently emailed me a Pages '08 document and I can't open it with my copy of regular old Pages.
    What? I can't open a Pages '08 document with Pages 2.02? Serious? That's just messed up. I mean, I should at least be able to view the document.
    And it's not that I don't want to upgrade. I just haven't gotten around to it because Pages works well for me.
    Meh.

    In order to avoid "threadjacking", you should be asking this question in a new posting. Having said that, you can be helped by this link, especially the recommendation of Walt K in that thread:
