Detecting failed disk in a mirror

Simple question I hope.
I am getting familiar with mirroring in Solaris 10.
I have mirroring set up and running fine.
Question: How would I know that a disk fails? I can periodically run the metastat command to give me the status of the mirrors but this does not seem like an efficient way to do this.
Thanks

Use metacheck script.
"To automatically check your Solaris Volume Manager configuration for errors, create a script that the cron utility can periodically run.
The following example shows a script that you can adapt and modify for your needs."

Since all my drives are reporting OK, could this be a problem with the Fiber Channel interfaces?
Should I just backup (again), shut down and rebuild the mirror using Disk Utility?

    Hi Kappy<
I am trying to migrate user data from a RAID - 1 slice from my old PowerMac G4 running OS X 10.4.11 to my new MacBook Pro running OS X 10.5.4 by reading a mirror RAID slice from my old Mac that is mounted in an external drive enclosure and connected by FireWire.
The problem is that the new Mac cannot read the old Mac disk, it never shows up on the desktop, or comes up as available when trying to use Migration Assistant. Then, if I go into Disk Utility, the external RAID slice shows up briefly with a locked yellow padlock beside it, then I suddenly get the window shade of death, and have to hold down the power button to reset/restart my MacBook.
Why can my new computer not read my old computers disk, and how can I change permissions, or make the old drive readable by the new mac.
Regrettably I am away from the original Desktop, and cannot load the old drive back into it, connect the two machines and migrate that way. My only option for reaching my necessary data is to retrieve it off the drive I have with me.
Thanks in advance for any help you can offer.

  • Replacing a failed disk (SATA drive) on UCCX (MSC-7825)

    Hi,
I discovered a failed disk drive on the UCCX server (non-HA mode). Now, my task is to get this disk replaced. What are the typical steps to follow and what precautions should I take care besides backing up the config data)? Since thsi would be my first time doing this, I was hoping for some detailed steps to follow while doing this replacement.
The Model we have is the MCS-7825 -H4 CCX - premium. I have received the HD form HP.
I have found only data sheets on the cisco portal & hence was wondering if there is any other guide that can walk me through the steps.
    Thanks,

This is pretty standard hardware "stuff".
I suppose the SATA drives are configured in a RAID1+0 array through HP's Smart Array controller. You can open the HP Smart Array tool in Windows and ask it to show you the status. If it indicates the drive has failed, it will help you replace it and mirror up while the box is running.
This is a little scary if you have never done it, so I appreciate your caution.
The best thing to do is to try this on your lab machine. There is NO substitute for experience at this level.

    Geoff

  • Disk utility false "failed" disk errors

Hello, I'm really hoping someone can help me solve this problem.
I have an iMac (see specs below) connected via Thunderbolt to a LaCie 2big RAID drive (with two 3TB internal Seagate drives set up as mirrored RAID slices). Both the iMac and the LaCie drive were purchased brand new in 2012 and worked flawlessly until April 2014. In April, one of the LaCie's two internal drives failed and could not be rescued using Apple's Disk Utility. Since the LaCie unit was still under warranty, LaCie replaced the affected internal drive at no cost. Since then however, Apple's Disk Utility has been giving me a "failed" disk warning on the same internal drive about once a month. The first time, LaCie simply directed me to reformat the drive and the problem went away. But the same problem has appeared roughly every month since then.
I sent the entire unit back to LaCie for diagnosis and they told me that the drive is perfectly fine. In other words, it's a software failure, not a hardware failure. I was told that Disk Utility was giving me false errors, possibly caused by the iMac going into sleep mode and not ejecting the disk properly. They said they've seen it before, but Apple has not yet released a patch for it. Since receiving the drive back from LaCie, I've changed the iMac's energy saver settings to prevent it from going to sleep after any inactivity. However, the same drive failed again this morning.
The only solution LaCie has given me is to wait for Apple to release a patch and in the meantime, reformat my drive whenever the "failed" warning appears to clear the problem. However, I have more than 2TB of data on this drive and the process of backing it up, reformatting the disk and copying all of my data back again typically takes more than 20 hours. I simply cannot afford to keep doing this every month. LaCie seems to have washed their hands of this and pointed their finger at Apple's Disk Utility. My questions is, has anyone else had similar problems? And if so, what is the solution?
    Hardware Specs:
    27-inch iMac, Mid 2011 (3.1 Ghz Intel Core i5, 12 GB RAM)
LaCie 2big 6TB Thunderbolt RAID disk (set up as two 3TB mirrored RAID slices)
    Thanks,
    Mike.

Permissions you can ignore on 10.5 and 10.6:

Using 'should be -rw-r--r-- , they are lrw-r--r--' as an example, you will see the that the permissions are not changed, but the | indicates a different location. This is because an update to Leopard changed the location of a number of system components.
As long as you see, "Permissions Repair Complete" when it's finished... you're done.

Sapinst stopped at step 35 (or 36) - "Start Java engine"
jcontrol would not start and dev_jcontrol shows this error message - "JdkDetection_nnnn.class not found"

There were some solutions that suggested giving "ALL" permissions to the SIDADM and SAPServiceSID users to the disk drives that we are installing the software on - we did that as well, but it did not help us. Java engine won't just start. jcontrol would just die with the same error.
After spending enormous number of hours sifting through very few documents found on this error - I got fed up and here is what I did when I got the "JdkDetection_nnnn.class not found" error:
    1. Logged in to the server as SIDADM
    2. Opened a windows command prompt
    3. ran this command  --   jcontrol pf=D:\usr\sap\SID\SYS\profile\SID_DVEBMGS00_hostname
    4. waited for 15mins
    5. Restarted sapinst
    6. Continued successfully
I am thinking that jcontrol was having a difficult time to start for the first time at Step 35 (or 36) during sapinst. When I started it on the command line with just the profile as the parameter - it pulled in all the required configuration from the database and started the dispatcher and server successfully. After that - installation went on smoothly.
    Hope this helps.

  • Failed Disk Utility Software Raid

My external RAID hasn't been mounting as easily as normal so I opened Disk Utility to repair disk or whatnot and it shows one drive as failed. Not sure what this means or how I should proceed. I'd be surprised if that drive is dead. What does the Rebuild button do? I have backed up all the data on the mirror, but am not sure how to proceed. I'd like to keep this info on the RAID if possible.
    Dual2 G5 & Powerbook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.4)

    From Disk Utility's Help:
A disk in a RAID set has failed or is missing
Disk Utility monitors the status of the disks in a RAID set. If you see a message that a disk is missing or has failed, there are several things you can try to solve the problem.
If a disk is missing, make sure it is connected to power and turned on, and that it's connected to your computer. If you are using a FireWire or USB disk, you may need to disconnect it then connect it again.
Use the First Aid pane to repair the disks in the RAID, then check the RAID set to see if it still reports an error. You may need to unmount the RAID set to repair the disks.
In some cases, you might need to quit and reopen Disk Utility or restart your computer and then check the RAID set.
If you are using a mirrored RAID set, there might be an error while writing data to the disk. Click Rebuild in the RAID pane of Disk Utility.
If you are using a striped RAID set, delete the damaged RAID set. Your data may be lost. Be sure to back up the disks in your RAID set and other data regularly.
If you have a persistent problem with a disk in a mirrored RAID set, you may need to replace it. After you replace the damaged disk, click Rebuild to rebuild the RAID set.[/i[

  • Difficulty detecting SATA disk, adding a second SATA disk, memory conflict, etc

I resolved the SATA problem in the middle of writing this post, but for others’ benefit in the future, I am still describing it here.  But there are still some unresolved problems.
    ========================================================
I have an Intel P4 2.4 GHz CPU.
My MSI motherboard has the words 865PE Neon 2P on it.
    BIOS is AmiBIOS 3.31a.
I cannot tell what display card I have.  I do not see any brand printed on the card.
I have an (internal) 37 GB IDE hard disk (I cannot see the brand and I am too lazy to un-mount it) as the C drive.
About 3 years ago I added another internal disk, 150GB Western Digital WD 1600, SATA as the E drive.
I have a copy of Windows XP Pro SP2 on each of these two hard drives but I always boot on C.
I also have 2 DVD drives (Drives D and G) and 6 (2 at the side and 4 at the back) USB ports.
A shop installed everything for me and things have been well.  I did not record the BIOS settings so I do not know how it was set up.  My nightmare started about 2 weeks ago when my PC suddenly did not detect E, i.e. the SATA drive.  I had not done anything to the BIOS setting or otherwise, so I have no idea why the E drive suddenly disappeared.
At that time, the Standard CMOS Features in the BIOS setting was:
Primary IDE Master - Not Installed
    Primary IDE Slave - IC35L060AVV207-0
Secondary IDE Master - Pioneer DVD ROM
Secondary IDE Slave - Lite On DVD ROM
Third IDE Master - Not Installed
Third IDE Slave - Not Installed
Fourth IDE Master - Not Installed
Fourth IDE Slave - Not Installed
I tried many things and finally bought a hard disk enclosure and put that SATA in it and connect it to one of the USB ports.  It works.
This morning I stumbled on this article "Motherboard can't detect SATA hard disk" at http://forum.msi.com.tw/index.php?topic=119738.0 and also “Q: How to enable both SATA and PATA? “ on “NEO Boards Unofficial FAQ rev 4/05/2004 - two lights on "P" series” at https://forum-en.msi.com/index.php?topic=21469.0 taking about the On-Chip IDE Configuration section of  the BIOS menu and I decided to give it a try, so that I can get rid of that hard disk enclosure.
It works, kind of.  I saw that it was set to Legacy Mode, P-ATA Only, SATA Keep Enabled=No, PATA Keep Enabled=No, PATA Channel Selection=Both, Combined Mode Option=PATA 1st Channel, SATA Ports Definition= P0-3rd/P1-4th. So following the advice on the article and the FAQ, I reset it to Legacy Mode, P-ATA + S-ATA, SATA Keep Enabled=No, PATA Keep Enabled=No, PATA Channel Selection=Both, Combined Mode Option=PATA 1st Channel, SATA Ports Definition= P0-Master/P1-Slave.  Now my PC could detect the SATA drive and set it as the D drive (and the IDE remained as Drive C) but my two DVD ROMs disappeared.  The Standard CMOS Features in the BIOS setting was:
    Primary IDE Slave - IC35L060AVV207-0
Secondary IDE Master - WDC WD1600JD-00HBB
    The rest is Not Installed.
So, I (only) changed Combined Mode Option to SATA 1st Channel. So apparently my PC now booted using the WinXP copy on the SATA disk (recall that I have WinXP on both hard disks).  And now the SATA disk is C, and both DVD ROMs are visible.  My IDE disk disappeared.
Now I went back to the BIOS menu and switched back to PATA 1st Channel, reset it back to P-ATA Only, and changed SATA Keep Enabled=Yes.  Voila.  Now I can see my IDE disk as Drive C, SATA disk as Drive D, the two DVD ROMs as Drives E and G.  Everything looks fine except that some of the start-up programs no longer start up apparently because their paths used to be E:\.... but now the disk they are on was renamed from E to D so the operating system cannot locate them.  And the Standard CMOS Features menu reads:
Primary IDE Master - Not Installed
    Primary IDE Slave - IC35L060AVV207-0
Secondary IDE Master - Pioneer DVD ROM
Secondary IDE Slave - Lite On DVD ROM
Third IDE Master - Not Installed
Third IDE Slave - Not Installed
Fourth IDE Master - WDC WD1600JD-00HBB
Fourth IDE Slave - Not Installed
Problem 1 (the main problem): Difficulty detecting SATA disk – Resolved.  If anyone is kind enough, maybe you can tell me and others why suddenly the BIOS setting was changed by itself causing all these problems, and why “P-ATA Only, SATA Keep Enabled=Yes” works but “P-ATA + S-ATA, SATA Keep Enabled=No” does not.  Should I now tweak the Windows registry to change the drive letter of the SATA disk from D to E?
Problem 2: I just bought an internal Hitachi Deskstar 640GB SATA disk.  And I have a vacant orange SATA connector on my mobo.  Can I add it together with the existing 2?  Would it be set up as Third IDE Master, Fourth IDE Slave, or something else?
Problem 3: I used to have a Samsung DDR PC2700 512MB memory module and during the last week I added a Corsair DDR PC3200 1GB memory module, both on the green slots (not the purple slots).  It caused my PC to freeze (keyboard and mouse not responsive) every now and then.  So I pulled out the Samsung one and it has been working fine.  Some said one has to use memory from the same manufacturer with the same size and same everything.  The sticky thread titled “NEO Boards Unofficial FAQ rev 4/05/2004 - two lights on "P" series” in this forum has a question “I have this RAM xxxx but it does not work with my board. Can MSI update the BIOS to fix this?” and the answer points to a Product Info page and I don’t know where that is. Any advice on how to make both work together?  Can I use the purple slots?
Problem 4: The “usable” space on my Dell M991 CRT monitor has shrunk.  That is, the black areas on both sides, mostly RHS, have intermittently enlarged.  It only happened in these 2 weeks. I tried Control Panel – Display – Settings – Advanced – Displays – Adjustments to no avail.  I don’t have another monitor to try in order to test whether it has to do with the CRT.  Just in case you happen to know anything, please jot a line.
Problem 5: Some of my USB ports do not work or only work intermittently.  For example I plugged in my wireless adaptor into one of them and it sometimes would say “USB Device Not Recognized”.

If it is a SATA-II Drive, you will probably have to force it into SATA-I Compatibility mode first (check the hard drive user manual for jumper settings or firmware switches).

Exactly.  Mixing different memory modules causes problems in many cases because the exact same settings will apply to both modules at the same time.  What works for the one module may not work so well for the other one.

That is either related to the monitor itself or to the video card.  It may also be related to a problem with the driver or improper screen resolution settings.

Getting a Dial Tone Detection fail on my 4630. The line has a dial tone through a phone. Anyone ever see this before?

    Hi @PTrietschChaney,
    Welcome to the HP Forums!
I understand that you are getting a dial tone detection fail with your HP Officejet 4630. I am happy to look into this issue for you!
For further assistance, I have a few questions for you:
Is your phone service analog or digital? Analog. Digital. What’s the Difference?
If the phone service is analog, please see this guide, Cannot Send or Receive Faxes. If the phone service is digital, then see this guide, How to connect your HP Fax Device to an ISDN, ADSL, PBX, or VoIP line. HP fax devices are designed to work with traditional analog phone services. They are not designed to work with digital phone services such as ADSL, PBX, ISDN, or VoIP. While HP fax products are not supported on these types of lines, they might work given appropriate setup and equipment.
For future reference, here is your printer's user guide.

    Use UTF-8 for ABAP proxy.
Change the charset inside your adapter module.

I have an old T2000 Server with a hardware Raid1 mirror. The secondary disk failed and I purchased a new one. Its hot swap so I plugged it in and when I do a #radctl command it shows that it is in SYNC status but it never gets back to optimal. I am unfamiliar with this process. What needs to be done to get the new disk to be synced properly? I waited hours to see if it would succeed but never did. Any help is greatly appreciated.
    Thank You

It may take several hours depending on system activity and on disk size.
