Detecting internet speed etc for video output

Hi everyone!
We are putting some flash video on our intranet and would
like to figure out how to use action script to detect internet
speed and prob screen res to feed back video(s) compressed &
resized accordingly. Is that the right approach? I'm sure there are
some rules, regulations & industry standards out there to
follow... Any help would be greatly appreciated! :)
Thank you so much in advance!
Olga

download speed you can calculate by loading something into
your swf and using the getBytesLoaded() method and getTimer()
function.
screen resolution you can access by using
System.capabilities.screenResolutionX and
System.capabilities.screenResolutionY.

  • Verizon is Capping Internet Speed/Service for "Unlimited" Customers

Some recent news has been brought to my attention by Verizon Wireless' customer service department, and I think that given the severity of Verizon Wireless’ continued breach of contract to Internet customers, this matter should be brought to everyone else's attention as well.
I originally purchased a Verizon Wireless USB Internet Card in 2007. I was offered a plan that entitled me to an “Unlimited Internet Usage Allowance”. I kept the same wireless Internet device for two years and never acquired any issues or concerns. On January 20th, 2010, I went into a Verizon store and was offered a free upgrade to the new MiFi Mobile HotSpot. I was told that I could test the product for 30 days to make sure that it worked to my standards and my Internet needs. It worked perfectly. I used it for multiple computers in my home, as well as work and travel.
My problem with the Verizon MiFi began on October 21st, 2010 when my Internet suddenly became extremely slow and unable to access any web pages without minutes of waiting. I continued to call customer service and go into the Verizon stores throughout the month in hopes that someone could find a ‘glitch’ and solve my issue of what soon became No Internet access. I did all this with patience and good faith, as I have continued to pay $60 a month for “High speed 3G” service. Two weeks ago, I took the MiFi device into the store and requested a new device since it became entirely defective. My new device arrived in the mail and I have still spent the last week going through the ring-around circus of Tech support and the only logic they can come up with is, "Either the device is defective or my computer is too old."  This is not the case, as I recently purchased a new laptop.
What I discovered was that Verizon neglected to inform me for the past two months that I had gone over my "undisclosed usage threshold" (Even though I pay for Unlimited Allowance) and now my internet speed has been capped and I am unable to access the Internet. I spent 4 hours on the phone yesterday and weaved my way into a small department called "AIT" which is supposedly a new sub-contracted company that is suppose to help negotiate my "situation". They of course are closed, and my numerous voice mails will most likely never be returned.
At this point, I am still paying for something that does not work, and Verizon has taken it upon themselves to decide "how often" I can use the internet. This was not disclosed to me in my contract that I signed in Jan 2010, when I continued my Wireless plan for "unlimited usage allowance."
I want everyone to be aware of this, before they head out this holiday season and spend hundreds of dollars on a Verizon Wireless Internet Device, and eventually will have to deal with the same nonsense I'm currently going through right now!

I started with one of the few unlimited plans back in 2008- They kept telling me to "hang on to it- cause it won't be around for long!" So I did and when I upgraded my device- everything worked great for 7 months. I started using it more frequently as a hot spot for more than one computer, we're talking email, web browsing and paying bills- Not Xbox360 for 24 hours a day or fownloading 10 videos a day!? I don't even know how to do that!?!
And the first month we went over- we got capped! Now it runs at about a quarter of the speed. Which was never disclosed to me. And to think- they market this MiFi 2200 as a hotspot for up to 5 computers??? I can only imagine how quickly people are being capped.

  • What are the settings for video output to consumer blu-ray DVD players?

I have a Maya animation rendered at 1920 x 1080.  There is no audio yet, butI will create SFX for the audio track. The animation was rendered for 24 fps viewing, but in truth I don't think I would notice if the playback was 23.97 fps.  I have Premeire Elements 7 and there are no pre-sets for HD or Blu-Ray.  It's not clear to me that I can do this in Elements 11 either or if I need to buy Premeire Pro to do what I want.
    Thanks,
    Matt

    Thanks Ann.
I know I'll need to upgrade.  Since my editing needs are infrequent I just wanted to find out if I had to spring for Pro or if Elements11 would do.  Also, I'm trying to figure out what the settings should be.  I read about 24fps progressive (for film?) and 23.97 fps progress (for video?).  It is a short animation that I want to loop for a Point of Purchase video display.
Thanks again for taking the time to answer.

  • Graphics card not available for video output

Hi, I'm trying to use a consumer TV as a video monitor (additional to two computer monitors). I have an ATI Radeon 9200 graphics card with S-vid out for the purpose. I use a separate card for the two computer monitors. This setup works fine on the desktop and for Quicktime (present movie command), but Final Cut does not pick up the 9200 in the list of available devices for video playback in AV setup. I've tried using my Sony Handycam as a firewire to video converter instead and this has patchy results a best, but did work just. I'd much rather try to set up the ATI if possible.
Thanks in advance for any help.

Thank you Jerry, I was obviously given a poor recommendation to buy that card with the TV out if it was never going to work. I'm sure however, that I have used many systems with a dedicated TV out from a graphics card that did not involve using firewire. It seems that Apple don't think this is a very good idea either since they have stopped support for this (except on AGP cards) in later versions of Final Cut. Unfortunately I can't seem to find an up to date AGP with a video out. And I wish I could get that firewire trick working with my dv camera! Cheers, Matt

  • Missing Firewire - for video output

Am trying to run out a tape of a timeline, or else, run out via firewire to my standalone Sony DVD recorder. Confronting the "MISSING APPLE FIREWIRE 720 ...". Noticed a lot of posts concerning this.
And yes, I have upgraded from 4.5 to 5.1. So I just reinstalled QT. This did not help. Have digitized many times from this port after upgrade, so cable and port work.
Stumped, completely. Also, there were no receipts for QT anywhere to delete.
I have never used Imovies, etc.
    fred

What is your sequence preset that you're trying to output?
Unless it's DV, it won't go through the firewire. If you're trying to output something that's not specifically DV-NTSC (or PAL, depending on your locale), it won't go.
We need more information about what your exact setup is and what you're trying to do. All of a sudden, at the end of this thread, you bring in BlackMagic, which hadn't been mentioned at all until now.
What are you trying to do?

  • What's best for video output to plasma HDTV?

I'm thinking of hooking my 15' MBP up to my Samsung Plasma HDTV. The TV has input options including VGA, DVI, and HDMI.
Since I'll have to go purchase the necessary cables and/or adapters to make this work, I was curious to know which option would give me the best video quality. Or is there a difference?
    What's the best?

VGA is an analog video format. You'd be degrading your signal from digital out to analog, then your TV would likely reconvert it to digital for display on the plasma. That's definitely not the way to go.
As for the DVI vs HDMI they're both digital transport. I am not totally certain but I believe for digital video the HDMI is just a higher density tighter pack of wires than DVI (other than audio but that's irrelevant here) so it the DVI vs HDMI should be equivalent quality.
I'd just plug the DVI out from the MacBook Pro into the DVI input of the TV. The cable will cost a mint (maybe like $50). I heard through someone that Apple is carrying low cost cables, but I haven't checked it out yet. I'll step back to hear someone who knows more comment more on the DVI vs HDMI and this price part.

  • Extending network halves internet speed only for iPhone/iPad

I've got an Airport Extreme (model just before dual-band) and an Airport Express, both with 802.11n support. I'm using 802.11n (b/g compatible). When I set the two up to extend my wireless network either through WDS or the "Extend a Wireless Network" feature, my internet connection speed (as measured by Speedtest.net) drops by approximately half, but only on my iPhone 4 and iPad.
I'm aware that extending a network can affect total throughput, but in my case I have 6Mbit DSL so from my OSX machines I see a measured speed of 5Mbit, well below the max throughput of the network. However, running the rest from my iPhone or iPad right afterwords results in a speed of only ~2.6Mbit.
Changing the Airport Express to "Join a Wireless Network", instead of extending it, immediately restored the iPhone and iPad to the connection speed of the OSX machines (again, as measured with Speedtest.net).
Has anyone else seen this behavior, or even better, have you found a solution?

I now realize that there are some settings to limit content on your iPhone and iPad through "Settings", "General", "Restrictions".  I've turned them on and will test it out.

  • Will iMac be efficient for Video Production Work Flow? PC to MAC switch.

Hi, I'm a long time Windows user editing in Sony Vegas for my video production work. I've been toying with the idea of seriously switching to Mac and Final Cut for about a year now. I may take the plunge this weekend. I don't think I want to go above $2k. I've been looking at the iMac 24inch, 2.8GHz model for a while now in the store, playing with footage. Nevetheless, I'm certainly nervous about making such a switch! I've been working with Sony Vegas for a couple of years now editing movies.
I do independent video production work, pretty seriously, but not for a huge movie house or anything. Will this iMac with Final Cut Studio work for me? Also should the fact that you can't upgrade specs on the iMac worry me? Will this computer be obsolete by next year.
I'm mainly interested in speed, efficient work flow, rendering times, etc. for video editing. Everything else I've seen on the mac I love.

hey there monaya & welcome to Discussions,
the iMac you're considering will certainly run FCS2. Tara Timpone edited "The TV Set", starring David Duchovny on her iMac @ home, see this: http://www.apple.com/pro/profiles/kasdan/
i still do some editing on a 17" imac G4 w/ 512 MB, RAM(top of the line 5 1/2 years ago) & it shows no sign of not doing what need. it won't run FCS 2, but i'm still rolling on the home video to DVD part of my video biz w/ it-so it just got repurposed & has been online wirelessly for most of that time(so i can check e-mail, listen to radio for a break). it will run previous versions of FCE, which is how i got into using a pro-style editing app.
render speed will depend on footage format/codec, FX & transitions, RAM, etc..., but once you get used to the suite, establish a workflow, keyboard & interface layout that works for you, you should be okay.
    good luck.

  • Minimal internet speed for video chat?

    Hi!
What is the minimal internet speed for using Video Chat?
    Regards, Soaman
Leader of Ljubljana BlackBerry Developer Group
BlackBerry Certified Builder for Native Application Development

    Hey soaman,
The only information I can find regarding this is that you need to be connected to WiFi in order to use the video chat.
Here are a few notes from the user guide:
I want to improve the chat quality:  You or the person you are having the Video Chat with may not have a sufficiently strong Wi-Fi signal. Try a different Wi-Fi network with a stronger connection, or move closer to the wireless access point.
My chat was dropped: Try connecting to a different Wi-Fi network. You cannot switch Wi-Fi networks during a call.
    Hope this helps.

  • Gatos - how to enable s-video output for ATI

i need to make s-video work on my laptop (want to connect laptop to big screen to present things - unfortunately this screen has no VGA but s-video)
in [extra] there is atitvout that should do this and also do so on my old computer (ATI mach64 chipset)
atitvout does not work on my thinkpad a31p - it does not recognize the card correctly and fails. for x.org i use the radeon driver and this works fine. it's a ATI FireGL 7800 that works fine with the "RV200" driver. but "radeon" does not have s-video output as far i know - no options how to enable s-video-out
after a long search on the internet, reading that most users that have my laptop never tried to make s-video work, i found GATOS:
    under:
    http://gatos.sourceforge.net/theater_out.php
there is a module that, if i understand it correctly, should make s-video work
    what i don't know:
    - how do you build this driver?
    - how do you use it?
(anyone able to make a pkg work with newest xorg?)
nowhere documented is how to use it with xorg >6.8.0
    anyone can help me?

atitvout just works with the vesa driver ...
and try the option "atitvout -f t" (and remember to put the tv connected before booting)
but the gatos drivers would be much better

  • Firewire Output for Video Preview Intermittent

I'm experiencing a frustrating problem with After Effects these days.
We're producing some video to be projected, so to see what the final output will really look like, I'm doing video previews using FireWire so output goes directly to the projector.
It's been working great up until yesterday.  Was working fine until I had to restart my Mac.  Upon reboot, my the projector no longer gets any video output.
I've tried restarting numerous times, checked all connections, etc.  Got it working again after several restarts, but after switching over to Photoshop momentarily, the video output once again disappeared.
Any suggestions on how to regain consistent Firewire output for Video Previews?
    My setup:
    After Effects CS6
    Mac Pro
    OSX Version 10.7.5
Firewire Output of my Mac's monitor is going to the Firewire Input on my Sony Media Converter
RCA Video out (Composite video) going to the projector's video input.
    After Effects Video Preview preferences:
    Output Device:  FireWire
    Output Mode: Apple FireWire NTSC

    Thanks for your reply, Rick.
I finally figured it out... I had a background application running called iCam that monitors my security cameras.  I had forgotten that it uses Firewire and was intermittently hogging the resources.  Once I quit that application, everything was good once again.
Thanks for taking the time to respond, much appreciated!
    Mike

  • My internet speed keeps to be occupied when streaming video and closing the broswer!!

My internet speed is fully occupied when streaming a video and going to different points in it (walking through it) then close the tab the speed still occupied even if I close the broswer !!!! (also tried on firefox and chrome), Iam running fresh installation of windows 8.1 enterprise (updated) and my browser versions "firefox 29, chrome 34.0.1847.131m" and flash player 13,0,0,206 and only way till now to stop this is to disable and then re-enable connection from network and sharing center in windows . what's wrong! what should I do?

What you NEED to understand is that Flash Player is ONLY a plug-in for your browser.
It ONLY functions when there is Flash content in a page and ONLY when that content is called into play by a user action (you clicked Play or visited a page where the content was set to "auto play").
If your system is downloading data AFTER you've closed the browser (and subsequently terminated the plug-in), whatever is causing that download is OUTSIDE of your browser and OUTSIDE of Flash Player.
Think of it this way. You have a Blu-Ray movie playing and suddenly... there's a loud screeching sound coming from your stereo. So you stop the movie - the sound continues. You eject the BR disc - the sound continues. You disconnect the BR player - the sound continues. You turn the TV off - the sound continues. You disconnect the TV from the stereo - the sound continues. The sound CANNOT be coming from a source that is completely disabled. Flash player is like the BR Player, your browser like the TV. The data download is like the annoying sound. Something in your OS... be it a setting or even malware... is causing the download of data because a terminated browser and a terminated plug-in cannot cause it.

  • Why has the download/buffering speed slowed down for videos?

Why has the download/buffering speed slowed down for videos?
What can be done about it?
    TIA,

The problem is with your router, your internet service provider or you have a marginal connection with your router.
Locate your iPad close to your wifi router and see if the problem persists.
