"Detecting Java on your computer" spins forever
Hi,
Win 7 32 bit / IE 9 / Clean install - wiped the hard drive and started fresh
Installed Java 7 update 10 (1.7.0_10-b18, according to the control panel Java applet) from java.com, without any errors.
When I go into the Verifying Installation page, the "Detecting Java on your computer" applet spins forever.
Removed Java, reinstalled, restarted the browser & computer multiple times, same result.
Tried it an another PC, also Win 7 32 bit / IE 9 / Clean install - same result.
What's going on?
Thanks

Check the proxy settings, I suspect this is the problem.
This is often the cause when a class file can not be loaded.
http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/technotes/guides/deployment/deployment-guide/jcp.html#general scroll down to "Use proxy server"
If problems are still seen, view the Console output. Turn this on under the Advanced Tab.
http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/technotes/guides/deployment/deployment-guide/jcp.html#advanced
More Console information: http://docs.oracle.com/javase/7/docs/technotes/guides/deployment/deployment-guide/console.html
Less likely, but possible, are firewalls, AVs, routers, etc.

Security Center has detected Malware on your computer!
Is this an apple update or virus? I received a gbn.upatenotice.aa stating WINDOWS REQUIRES IMMEDIATE ATTENTION - URGENT SYSTEM SCAN NOTIFICATION! PLEASE READ CAREFULLY!! ATTENTION! security center has detected malware on your computer! Affected Software: Apple Mac 10.6/10.5/10.4, Microsoft Windows 7, Microsoft Windows Vista, Microsoft Windows XP. They want you to click on the http://www.updatemn.com/ For the link to become active, please click on 'Add to contacts' skype button or type it in manually into your web browser!
I just downloaded skype Sunday. However I noticed about a week ago when I opened a itunes song the wrong song would play.
Any recommendations?
Thank You!Fake alerts, fake clean up utilities, even fake look-alikes pretending to be a well-known product. Such as reported today on ZDnet:
http://www.zdnet.com/blog/security/from-rogue-av-to-fake-disk-clean-up-utilities /7804?tag=mantle_skin;content
And they want you to be foolish and do something and install software (program, disable firewall, downloads 2nd item of malware) including ransomware or just crash the computer and hope it takes out the directory and more.
Sounds like Skype users might need some type of protection from scams, adware.
There are infected sites. For Firefox you can block javascript and minimize some of the adware/malware served (sql injection has been around for years now).
A site can see your IP address, OS, etc and there are or is one or two adware attacks that have a Mac component to them. But rare. -

PavanThis is a common problem on many laptops, not just HP ones. I guess that the device BIOS might be bugged and cause troubles but that is just my guess. I haven't seen any solution for this except restoring the computer to a previous working condition but if the computer is a new one and the webcam hasn't worked at all, it may not work ever at all.

airport stops detecting wi fi. it gives a message that some other computer is using the same IP address, change the IP address of your computer, how does one do that?
I am having the same issue too. It looks like many more people are having it as well. I called Apple Support a few times, but they use their standard naiive response: "we have never heard about this issue".
It is an issue of DHCP implementation on the Apple OS. My windows PCs and Printer are not having these issues.. -
Do you have the java api on your computer?
Just an observation.
Earlier when i started java programing, i used alot of books and tutorials which i still do. when i was faced with a problem eg. a method to do this or that, i used to look for tutorials for how to do it, and sometimes i couldnt get. After Many months, i stumbled upon java api, a documents that cointains all methods, classes and interfaces in java. my output increased, posts in this forum to seek help reduced, and am happier now?
Dou you have this api in your computer? i personally think newbies can accelerate their learning path by having this two references
1. the java tutorial
2. the java api

Synopsis
Problem: Endless Black Box "You Must Restart You Computer..." loop
Cause: Printing certain documents (so far one specific pdf file and a text file) through the wireless network at school initiates the problem and then all wireless networks perpetuate the problem thereafter
Steps Taken: Unplugged wireless network - this allows me to log in
-Warning box about fatal crash appears but "Send Report" does not produce any data
-Restarting wireless after login causes no problems
-Waking computer from sleep with wireless enabled causes black box to reappear
-Permissions repair did not resolve anything
-A complete reinstall solved everything until the other day when printing initiated the problem again, after having successfully printed numerous documents wirelessly over the past month
Other strange things my computer does:
-Makes very quite chirping sound with every key stroke (except arrows)
-Usually sits at the grey startup screen with the spinning wheel for a long time and then speeds through login process
-Only restarts successfully every second time after a hard-restart (the first time it just sits there spinning endlessly)
More Details
Problem: Black box appears notifying me "You need to restart your computer" (Kernel panic I believe?) I restart my computer once, and it sits forever at the grey screen with the little wheel spinning. I hard-restart my computer a second time and it logs me in and then the black box reappears... and then the whole process starts over again..
Circumstances: I had this exact same problem occur about a month ago and it happened again under the exact same circumstances. I recently installed a Korean wireless router, some other foreigner had left behind, in my school here in Korea. The first time it happened I was trying to print PDF document wirelessly from my classroom and the black box appeared. Then the whole endless loop began...
That night I tried to fix the problem at home. I was able to log into safe mode but the endless loop persisted when I tried a normal log in normally again. I finally did a reinstall from my external drive using the most up to date image I had created with Carbon Copy Cloner.
The following day I went to school and couldn't resist trying to reprint the suspect document. My freshly installed computer crashed and I was ****** at myself for experimenting so early in the day. Then I tried unplugging the wireless router and restarting and it worked! Then I plugged the router back in and everything was running smoothly again.
Now I have a new problem. If my computer wakes from her sleep with the wireless enabled I get the black box both at school and at home. I'd really like to avoid doing another reinstall... please help!
Thanks in advance!
PowerBook G$ Mac OS X (10.4.5)Hey Rich,
Think my computer healed herself while I was away this weekend
What I am wondering is if
a Safe Boot will always get you logged in when the
other problems are occurring.
This question prompted me to try starting up in safe mode. I wanted to make sure the problem still persisted so I:
1. Plugged in ethernet cable
2. Turned on Airport
3. Ensured WAN was functioning
4. Shut Down my computer with just like I used to, with all network connections enabled
5. Power ON -> Flawless start up, no black box!
6. Put computer to sleep -> Woke up -> No black box!
Weird eh?
So the only way I can answer your question is based on previous experience. Logging in using safe mode did work the three or four times I used it the first time this problem occurred.
I did nothing to my computer since this error, no updates, no permissions repairs and no sudo daily, weekly, monthly house keeping. When classes were finished Friday night, I came home, put my computer to sleep with Airport off and ethernet unplugged and the following morning I shut her down, hid her in my sock drawer, and left for the weekend!
My only explanation is that somehow reconnecting to the wireless network at school allowed my computer to resolve unresolved issue it was having with that network, the same network that instigated the problem. That's my best guess.
Thanks for taking the time to try and help me out with this issue. The clarification you sought definitely helped us get a more refined picture of the problem. I'm sure this issue will rear its ugly head again in the near future... that is, unless you or anyone else have some ideas about what I could do to prevent this from happening again.

FU,
Here's the info you wanted:
-Only restarts successfully every second time after a hard-restart (the first time it just sits there spinning endlessly)
This might indicate a dying backup battery (the one that keeps your PRAM healthy)
My PowerBook isn't even a year old yet, could it be that my battery has died this quickly? Hmmm, another thing I have experienced is that my Mac wont wake from sleeping if I have let the power get so low that she has been forced to sleep.
1. "10 minutes of battery power remaining" box appears
2. Battery depletes and computer enters sleep mode by default
3. I go home and plug computer into power adaptor
4. Computer fails to wake up no matter how long I wait -->power adaptor light does indicate the battery is charging
5. I am forced to unplug my computer, remove the battery and hold down the power switch.
6. Power on -> Date and time settings have changed and need to be set again
Does this sound like the symptom of a low backup battery?
make sure that "Set time & date automatically" in the Date & Time System >Preferences is unchecked.
I've never tried this so I'll give it a shot and see if performance improves.
now it seems almost obvious: 99% looks like a network fault and nothing >to do with your Tiger installation...
Perhaps, I'm no networking specialist, but I have flawless network performance until printing some random document at school over wireless triggers the whole series of events I mentioned above. My home router has never triggered this problem... although I have never tried to print wirelessly at home because I have no printer.
1) how big is your network? (how many wireless and how many wired Macs >access your Router)
At Home: Very small, 1 PowerBook 64 and one iBook G3
At School: Small: Two Windows machines and my PowerBook G4. Wireless box is plugged into the existing router that was there. I have windows printer sharing checked in the "sharing" section of "system prefs"
2) make/model of your router
D-Link DI-624 (Home)
Some crazy old dilapidated korean box (at school)
3) how do you configure your router (via the browser (Safari) or via a >utility/application provided by the vendor)?
I believe I configure it manually... I access the router via web browser and configure my settings
4) make sure DHCP is set to Off/Disabled and set your IPs for both your >Macs and the Router manually
Check, Check
5) If you're familiar with network settings like hosts file, post back your >configuration / make sure your IP addresses are assigned correctly
Not familiar
btw your PowerBook has an AirPort Extreme card or a 3rd party Wireless card?
AirPort Extreme card
Thanks for trying to help FU, hope this information helps you.

Playbook spins forever trying to connect to WiFI
I have a BlackBerry Playbook that as recently as yesterday afternoon was able to connect to WiFi. Today, however, it just spins forever in the "Finding Available Networks" mode. I tried "Connect Manually", and then it just spun forever in the "Attempt 1 of 3" mode.
I'm running 2.0.0.3778. I've turned developer mode off, and I've rebooted, but to no avail. Other devices in the room report strong connections to several WiFi networks, some of which are open.
How should I proceed? Does anybody want to see the logs? (How do I get them?)
Solved!
Go to Solution.First I would like you to do a Back Up of your PlayBook using your computer and BlackBerry Desktop Software.
This can be downloaded for free from http://us.blackberry.com/apps-software/desktop/
After the Back Up is complete I need you to unplug your PlayBook and then push and hold down the Power Button until the unit Force Powers Off.
Now, while Desktop Software is still open on your computer and the PlayBook Powered Off, Connect the PlayBook to your computer.
You should see and error screen from Desktop Software pop up that has the options to Retry, Update, or Cancel.
QUICKLY choose the Update option.
This will erase all the information off of your PlayBook and Re-Write the Software back onto it. Once it's complete your PlayBook will need to go back through the setup wizard, and you can then perform a restore using Desktop Software to return your information. The only thing that won't come back after the restore are the apps that you downloaded from App World but they can be easily Re-Installed using the My World feature in App World.
Click here to Backup the data on your BlackBerry Device! It's important, and FREE!
Click "Accept as Solution" if your problem is solved. To give thanks, click thumbs up

I originally posted this question to the community section and was advised to post it here. Please bear with me as this will be a long post. I'm including the scenarios involving this reoccurring issue, the trouble shooting steps I've already
taken and the results of several diagnostic tools and logs.
I have a Sony VAIOS VPCEBB33FM lap top since 2011. I have had this issue on an off for a long time. I'm at my wit's end. Any new insights or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Scenario Details
1) Some times it's on and off through out the day, sometimes it won't work all day, and once in a while it will work fine for the entire day.
2) I've had this issue across several wireless services, Clear Network accessed with WiMax, Library Wi-fi, Comcast cable internet using wireless router and Wi-fi, and Comcast Xfinity Wi-Fi, to name a few examples.
3) Other devices in the household or library will work with no problems such as my smart phone or my roommates' laptops or desktop computers.
4) Once in a while, the built-in wireless adapter is not found and I have to reinstall the driver. Also the diagnostic tool has had to reset my adapter on an increasing basis.
5) I had my hard drive replaced in December 2014 and my system restored from the System Restore disks that came with it when I bought the laptop. Even though I've been online on an infrequent basis it worked just fine for a while. Now that
I've been online a bit more I'm having the same issues again.
Below are my attempts at trouble shooting so far but I still have not been able to consistently resolve my DNS issues
1) Restarting my adapter
2) Turning off my laptop and removing the power supply for 5-10 minutes before turning it back on.
3) Using the IP Config in Command Prompt
ipconfig /flushdns
ipconfig /registerdns
ipconfig /release
ipconfig /renew
4) Using the NetSh reset in Command Prompt and restarting my laptop
netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt
netsh winsock reset
ipconfig /flushdns
[restart laptop]
5) Configuring the TCP/IP in several settings
Select Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4), and then click Properties.
I have used the following settings:
a) Obtain an DNS server address automatically
b) OpenDNS
208 67 222 222
208 67 220 220
c) Google DNS
8 8 8 8
8 8 4 4
6) Updating the driver for my Intel Centrino(R) Advanced-N 6250 AGN and Intel Centrino(R) WIMAX 6250 from the Intel website previous having my laptop wiped clean in 2014. It still did not resolve the issue. My laptop
manufacturer as not come up with an driver update for my adapter since 2010. I haven't tried to update the adapter driver from Intel's website since having my laptop repaired due to the fact that Intel strongly recommending using the manufacturer's updates
instead and frankly it didn't make much of a difference when I did it the first time.
7) The last one I've tried as of today is going into Services and changing the start up type to automatic for the following:
Computer Browser [changed from manual to automatic]
DHCP Client [already set to automatic]
DNS Client [already set to automatic]
Network Connections [already set to automatic]
Network Location Awareness [changed from manual to automatic]
Remote Procedure Call (RPC) [already set to automatic]
Server [already set to automatic]
TCP/IP Netbios helper [already set to automatic]
Workstation [already set to automatic]
...and I'm still having DNS issues.
My only guessing are that my laptop came with a lemon adapter that needs to be replaced, some advanced setting(s) that I'm not aware off, or my firewall/anti-virus is interfering. I've used Symmantic Anti-virus and Firewall in the past and currently
Avast Anti-Virus with Microsoft Network Firewall. I've had DNS issues with both anti-virus/firewall set ups.
Below are the results from the diagnostics and tests that I've ran.

My Mac Mountain Lion desktop computer keeps saying, "You shut down your computer because of a problem." How do I keep this from happening?
Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:
☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)
☞ In the Finder, select Go ▹ Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.
☞ Open LaunchPad. Click Utilities, then Console in the page that opens.
Select the most recent panic log under System Diagnostic Reports. Post the contents — the text, please, not a screenshot. In the interest of privacy, I suggest you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header and body of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.) Please don't post shutdownStall, spin, or hang reports. -

A stale or corrupt kernel cache
A damaged OS X installation
A fault in a peripheral device, if any
Corrupt non-volatile memory (NVRAM)
An internal hardware fault (including incompatible memory)
An obscure bug in OS X
You may already have ruled out some of these.
Rule out #1 by booting in safe mode and then rebooting as usual. Note: If FileVault is enabled on some models, or if a firmware password is set, or if the boot volume is a software RAID, you can’t do this. Post for further instructions.
You can rule out #2 and #3 by reinstalling the OS and testing with non-essential peripherals disconnected and aftermarket expansion cards removed, if applicable. Sometimes a clean reinstallation may solve a problem that isn't solved by reinstalling in place.
Corrupt NVRAM, which rarely causes panics, can be ruled out by resetting it.
If your model has user-replaceable memory, and you've upgraded the memory modules, reinstall the original memory and see whether there's any improvement. Be careful not to touch the gold contacts. Clean them with a mild solvent such as rubbing alcohol. Aftermarket memory must exactly match the technical specifications for your model.
The Apple Hardware Test or Apple Diagnostics, though generally unreliable, will sometimes detect a fault. A negative test can't be depended on. Run the extended version of the test.
In the category of obscure bugs, reports suggest that FileVault may trigger kernel traps under some unknown conditions. Most, though not all, of these reports seem to involve booting from an aftermarket SSD. If those conditions apply to you, try deactivating FileVault.
Connecting more than one display is another reported trigger for OS X bugs.
If your system is not fully up to date, running Software Update might get you a bug fix.
In rare cases, a malformed network packet from a defective router or other network device can cause panics. Such packets could also be sent deliberately by a skillful attacker. This possibility is something to consider if you run a public server that might be the target of such an attack.
If none of the above applies, make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store to have the machine tested. You may have to leave it there for several days. There isn't much point in doing this unless you can reproduce the panic, or if you can't, it happens often enough that it's likely to be repeated at the store. Otherwise you may be told that nothing is wrong.
Print the first page of the panic report and bring it with you.
Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you know how to restore, and you have at least two independent backups.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

I have a 5th Gen iPod Video that I have had many years now. It has worked faithfully until about 2 weeks ago and the HDD totally died on me.
So I decided to upgrade from a 30 to 60 gb HDD, replaced the battery for the appropriate HDD and bought a new back shell for the unit. I made incremental installations as parts arrived. First the HDD itself and the next day the battery. Both went in with no problem and I have been running them in a jerry rigged case (basically the 30gb back case has been taped together to make sure it was going to work OK. I have been taking it to work with absolutely no issues, great response and great battery life. Synching is fabulous.
Here is the issue, I hope this makes sense...
Today I received my 60 GB silver back cover and moved all of my parts over. It seems to fit fine. Headphone jack is working fine. However, now the hold button is unresponsive (which is not a big loss to me but still just so you know). I can play music and I can sync. However, if I restart the unit, or I try synching a second time, I get screen saying "Connect to your computer. Use iTunes to restore." It does not matter if I snap it shut or leave the case loose, this happens.
I have this error until I open my case up again and do nothing else. At that time, the error goes away, and my ipod is fine again. Then, the screen comes back after restarting to a normal boot. But, if I sync or restart without doing anything else, we go through the motions again until I open the case back up.
I have disconnected the battery as well as the HDD, but still have the problem. I have also disconnected the cable coming from the hold button/earphone jack to the M/B,
Has anyone else ever experienced this issue or have any suggestions.Shouldn't you contact the vendor or person who sold the back cover? At the very least, it has a Hold switch that doesn't work.
This web site has repair guides
http://www.ifixit.com/Device/iPod_Original
and they call it "Headphone Jack & Hold Switch"
http://www.ifixit.com/Guide/iPod+5th+Generation+%28Video%29+Headphone+Jack+%26+H old+Switch+Replacement/604
Under Relevant Parts, they seem to list separate parts for the thick and thin back cover.
On a side note, another way to fix your iPod is to use a compact flash card instead of a hard drive. This web page has details
http://www.instructables.com/id/Convert-your-5th-Gen-iPod-Video-to-use-Flash-Mem or/
Then, you can use your existing thin profile back cover that works. I replaced the hard drive in my 4th gen iPod with a CF card. Currently, it is only 8GB, but with lower prices these days, I may soon upgrade it with a 64GB CF card. But it works great with the 8GB card. The iPod is noticeably lighter. There is no hard drive spin-up delay. The battery lasts longer per charge. And it is no doubt more shock-resistant. -
My ipod says "connect to your computer. use itunes to restore."
My ipod says "connect to your computer. use itunes to restore."
So I plug it into the computer and itunes says it needs to restore, so I click restore, everything seems to go fine, and it says the ipod needs to restart, it does, has a lil progress bar go across the ipod screen, then itunes detects the ipod again and says it needs to be restored again. This is an endless loop, anyone have any idea how to solve this problem?Have you had a chance to look at this troubleshooting page? Have a look at the bottom section that covers what to try if restoring doesn't work, it may be of some help: iTunes has detected an iPod in recovery mode - Use iTunes to restore

IPhoto 09 Faces wheel spins forever and/or won't quit
Hope someone has insight or it helps others...
For the last several days any import into iPhoto will set it into spinning the Faces album waiting wheel forever. There is no way to Quit. Other times just simple quitting won't work.
Activity shows 40-50% iPhoto CPU usage, lots of context switches (270,000 in 5 minutes of CPU time) but no hangs, no faults. I have previously let it run overnight, in case it was somehow reanalyzing 18000 images, but even then the problem remains.
Console shows: 10/12/09 3:55:58 PM iPhoto[653] * -[NSPathStore2 getCharacters:range:]: index (8) beyond bounds (3)
as most recent item from iPhoto in the log.
Looking inside the iPhoto Library folder the face.db database, iPhotoMain.db etc. have no activity going on. ( I tested by changing the face info on one picture, the Finder last modified date immediately changed, showing the processes are running fine, but just some runaway process won't quit.)
Another console item showed iPhoto finding wrong architectured PGP plugin in contextual menu items, so I have trashed that. And, it finds a Chronos Notes related issue (contextual menu item in library and same named alias in user/library) throw an exception. I also informed ChronosNet.com of this....in case the recent iPhoto acting up is related to the SOHO update that was recently installed.
"I've had iPhoto start acting up (fails to quit) since SOHO NOTES latest update... checking the Console shows a possible problem....
You have a contextual menu entry (alias) in user/library and same name (original item) in library. That makes apps like iPhoto throw exceptions...
10/12/09 4:29:33 PM [0x0-0x40040].com.apple.iPhoto[653] objc[653]: Class SBContextualMenuHelper is implemented in both /Users/imran/Library/Contextual Menu Items/ChronosNotesCM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/ChronosNotesCM and /Library/Contextual Menu Items/ChronosNotesCM.plugin/Contents/MacOS/ChronosNotesCM. One of the two will be used. Which one is undefined."
Let's see what they state.
Now.... Force quitting now to see what it shows in the logs:
It did not show any quick console messages. I'm surprised an OS X "report this crash to Apple" window did not open up.
Now relaunched... will see if it happens again...
ImraniPhone is not "hung" in the traditional sense in that you can do several things within it while it's non-stop Faces spinning wheel displays. I do NOT find it responsive and it does NOT Quit when Faces is spinning forever. tgardner, your experience appears to be different.
Checking in Activity Monitor shows that interestingly there are no hangs or errors. But, looking into contents of iPhoto library shows NO files are modified even after 24 hours or running. In other words, maybe it's not dead, but it is comatose.
Also, checking in Console I always see a variable out of bounds error when this happens.
I have 19000 images and of those maybe 5000 have faces, of about 50 people. ALL of those images are already processed with Names info. Even if Faces needs to update some data, 24 hours of nothing but iPhoto running ought to be enough but it is not.
Others may want to check Console and Activity Monitor and add their experiences here.

IMRAN
