Detection of UltraBay Battery under Linux ( Mint )

Hello Forum,
I am using Linux Mint 12 on my T420s. After quite a lot of work a get almost everything working as it pleases.
But there is one issue i just can't figure out.
I use the main battery in combination with a ultrabay battery. On clean reboot i only get the indicator that shows the main battery. I have to run powertop once so that i get the indicator showing the bay battery.
Does anyone have the same issue or maybe figured out a solution?
( I don't want to run powertop via startupscript )
Sincerely,
Loranon

Sounds like the Wifi driver needs updating, perhaps try an Ubuntu Live CD v12 and see how that goes. Ubuntu is very Toshiba friendly now.

  • Portege Z930 - slow Wi-Fi on battery under Linux

    Hi,
    I've just bought a Z930 and I run it under Linux Mint and Windows 7.
    I've a problem under Linux that I don't have on Windows.
    When I put my computer on battery, there is a significative signal lowering.
    Do somebody why there is such a problem ? Can we fix it by configuring my network device ?
    Thanks for your help !

  • Shockwave doesn't work on firefox under linux mint 17, qiana

    I use Firefox 33.0 Mozilla Firefox for linux Mint: mint - 1.0
    I use linux mint 17, qiana. Cinnemon, 32-bit.
    As extensions for Firefox I use Adblock Plus 2.6.6.
    As plugins I use: DivX webplayer 1.4.0.233, Iced-Tea webplugin 1.5, OPenH264 video codec provoded by Cisco systems, Inc. 1.1, Quicktime plug-in 7.6.6. , Shockwave Flash 11.2.202.408, VLC Multimedia plugin (Compatible videos, 3.10.1), Windows Media Player plugin (compatible Videos 3.10.1)
    When I surf on a page http://www.jkp.com/media/wysiwyg/MindReading/demo/content/dswmedia/loader.html
    I get the information: "a plugin is needed to play this content"
    Since this url was under a button "View shockwave Demo" on page http://www.jkp.com/uk/mindreading/demo/ I presume that the pluging that is needed is a "Shockwave Flash" plugin, but I have installed that.
    So what do I have to solve the problem?

    It is looking for the Shockwave (director) player and not the Flash player.
    Adobe does not provide Shockwave player for Linux, only on Mac OSX and Windows. Besides it is more for few games and learning stuff and it used very little compared to the Flash Player for most users.
    As you can see it is only for Windows and Mac OSX.

  • Firefox running under Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu) 12 (KDE) won't install extensions for Firefox

    Linux Mint (based on Ubuntu) 12, KDE desktop
    Firefox 10.0
    Started up Firefox right after Mint was installed. On the add-ons page video download helper was shown as a featured extension and I installed it, then rebooted when prompted. After that, Firefox would never install another extension again. Just gives download error.
    I google searched and in a forum I found a post about uninstalling and reinstalling Firefox. I tried it. First time I started it up, it installed video download helper again, but then would not install any other extension after that. I tried numerous extensions I '''KNOW''' are working in Firefox 10.0 because they are working in Firefox over on my Win 7. Everytime I get a download error, either from the addons site or from the Add-ons Manager in Firefox.
    Someone told me on the Mint forums that I needed to add a subdirectory on a certain directory, so I did that. Didn't work.
    It seems Ubuntu disables the root, or cripples it, and I guess Mint does too. You can still use sudo when doing things in Ubuntu (and Mint I would assume, since it's based on Ubuntu) but you can't get true 'superuser' access as I understand it. But, I don't think this would have any bearing on the problem, or my search of the Mint forums would have come up with all kinds of threads screaming about this.

    Problem solved - it was caused by an add-on called "PDF Download 3.0.0.2)
    To fix - in Firefox :
    Click on '''Tools''' command (top of screen)
    Select '''Extensions'''
    click on "'''disable''' button beside '''PDF Download'''
    Close Firefox and restart it.
    Clicking on any pdf file should open a new tab now and the document will appear there.

  • How to ensure Firefox stays updated in Linux Mint 17 - Qiana

    I happen to have dual OS, Windows OS 7 & Linux Mint 17 (Qiana). I love Linux Mint more than Windows 7. If only I could move away completely from Windows I would be the happiest person on the face of the earth. But unfortunately we're not there yet. e.g. under Windows Firefox tends to update itself, the moment new version is released by Mozilla. But the same doesn't occur with Linux Mint, instead it keeps on listing various error messages.
    At present, under Linux Mint I'm using v33, which Linux Mint says is the latest. Whereas v34 is available on Mozilla site. If I've to update FF from 33 to 34, I've download it then either uninstall v33 + install v34 OR install v34 & hope that it overwrites v33 & hope there aren't two versions running on my OS.
    Why can't it is capable to renew like in Mac or Windows, where I go to Help/About Firefox/Update (directly from that panel)?
    By the time FF v34 is available for update under Linux Mint, there will be another version, which will obviously have more security patches.
    One thing I want to clarify, I'm not here to blame any person or group, If I'm able to help I would love to, but this is beyond my expertise, so I'm just trying to raise the issue for the concerned expertise to work towards benefit of all the netizens. If you do have any runaround to this I would really appreciate the feedback. Also this is the first time that I'm voicing my concern, so if I've offended someone, even inadvertently - I apologise.
    Thank you

    Linux Mint controls the updates for their version of Firefox that comes with their operating system. It is controlled through their repository.
    You could install the Linux - Firefox version that comes from Mozilla directly, to have updates done by Mozilla on the Mozilla schedule.

  • How to disable battery protection mode on Linux Mint

    I did a frest install of Linux Mint on my newly bought U310, everything went well, except -
    I turned on battery protection mode in windows so that the battery never charges above 60% to preserve battery life span,
    But now on linux mint, the charge on the battery still caps at 60% and there are no options to disable it.
    There doesn't seem to be lenovo drivers for linux either.
    Any help is appreciated.

    You want to look up tpacpi-bat instead for newer thinkpads.

  • JCOP tools under linux - no readers detected for activation

    [eclipse 3.1.2, pcsc-lite 1.4, redhat el3]
    I just downloaded the JCOP tools as described in the following post:
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=23&threadID=722788
    I found that it would not install under linux, because win32 has been specified in the site and feature manifest files. When I removed these entries, it installed OK.
    Now, when I attempt to activate using my "engineering sample" card, the activation wizard notifies me that no PC/SC readers were detected. I'm puzzled by this, since pcsc-lite (1.4) is working well on my system, and I can see the reader & card being detected in pcscd's log. I have also been careful to ensure that eclipse knows about the shared library paths and I've even included jpcsc.jar as an extra library.
    If anyone else has JCOP tools working under linux, I'd appreciate any insights that might help. My issue may be simply that I have downloaded a custom windows distribution (tools.zip) - hence the manifest hack - perhaps there is a linux one?

    Could be the pcsc-lite 1.4 version the problem?
    http://forum.java.sun.com/thread.jspa?forumID=23&threadID=688560PC/SC Support (Linux)
    JCOP Tools only works with pcsc-lite 1.2.0.

  • HP LaserJet P1102W - no print output in Linux Mint 17.1 Cinnamon Desktop

    I've just done a default install of Linux Mint 17.1 - as feared, no print output.
    I'm guessing I need to install a driver - but I couldn't find anything easily on HP site, only Windows/Mac OS stuff. Are HP printers generally linux friendly? Where can I download drivers if they are? More over, I'm a total linux newbie, so any drivers need to be easily installed! I'm not currently familiar with Terminal windows and line commands!
    My printer does have wireless enabled, but I have it connected via direct USB also.
    Linux Mint did offer to run a diagnostic tool/debugging tool which gave a great deal of what means nothing to me. Debug output is below if it is helpful, but hoping a simple driver install will cure all ...

    I'm currently working on a nice cross-platform project involving sound producing. I decided to take a look at JMF and test it a bit to know if its features can suit me. I tried to make it works under windows, using a very simple sample of code. The system seems to play the sound as some console output detects the start and the end, but all i hear is a very short noise ( 1/2second ) like a "CLIK" and nothing else. I tested the code under linux, using the same computer and it works just fine, playing the same wave nicely and entirely.
    some info:
    -i used the cross platform JMF, no performance pack ( i tried it , but still no result )
    -the code just opens a file dialog and plays the selected file
    -the selected file was always a very simple .wav
    -i did not use system classpath variables because i don't like it, i rather use local classpath ( which works fine too, no doubt about it )
    -i tested this little soft on 2 other computer using windows XP, and still got the same result.
    Please, have you got an idea about what's going on ?
    Thanks a lot for any answer!

    Code Sample:
    import java.io.File;

  • How to enable OCR with Scangear MP under Linux for MG8250?

    Under Linux openSUSE 12.3 I use Scangear MP 1.80 for my Canon PIXMA MG8250.
    As a scan target (in my German GUI it's "Ziel") I can choose "OCR". But there is no text output, the scan is just saved as a picture. How can I configure Scangear to open the scan via Tesseract in a text editor.
    By the way, the target "Print" (in German "Drucken") leads to saving just as well, though there is at least one printer at hand, of course.
    It's a pity that the pixma scan drivers that are shipped with openSUSE don't work with xsane (the scanner starts working, but stops after one third of the page). Using xsane with a different scanner I can use OCR successfully.
    Volker

    There are two basic types of core OCR algorithm, which may produce a ranked list of candidate characters.
    Matrix matching involves comparing an image to a stored glyph on a pixel-by-pixel basis; it is also known as "pattern matching" or "pattern recognition". This relies on the input glyph being correctly isolated from the rest of the image, and on the stored glyph being in a similar font and at the same scale. This technique works best with typewritten text and does not work well when new fonts are encountered. This is the technique the early physical photocell-based OCR implemented, rather directly.
    Feature extraction decomposes glyphs into "features" like lines, closed loops, line direction, and line intersections. These are compared with an abstract vector-like representation of a character, which might reduce to one or more glyph prototypes. General techniques of feature detection in computer vision are applicable to this type of OCR, which is commonly seen in "intelligent" handwriting recognition and indeed most modern OCR software. Nearest neighbour classifiers such as the k-nearest neighbors algorithm are used to compare image features with stored glyph features and choose the nearest match.
    Software such as Cuneiform and Tesseract use a two-pass approach to character recognition. The second pass is known as "adaptive recognition" and uses the letter shapes recognized with high confidence on the first pass to better recognize the remaining letters on the second pass. This is advantageous for unusual fonts or low-quality scans where the font is distorted.
    So I wonder which kind of OCR algorithm are you using?

  • I tried to uninstall firefox and to install again on linux mint.Now firefox ask every time for a profile,i never make a profile before and this is a serious problem to me.Firefox can't open and work like before the uninstall

    Hi,i am running linux mint.I tried to change the firefox folder from the file system with a new firefox folder cause i had a problem with one extension(download statusbar).So,after that i have problem,firefox ask me about profile and after some tests about it from me,firefox always says"this profile its allready in use,make a new profile or rename one profile".I don't know anything about profiles,first time i see that i can make a profile it's now.

    A possible cause is security software (firewall) that blocks or restricts Firefox without informing you about that, maybe after detecting changes (update) to the Firefox program.
    Remove all rules for Firefox from the permissions list in the firewall and let your firewall ask again for permission to get full unrestricted access to internet for Firefox.

  • Crash (SIGSEGV, SIGILL) of 32bit Hotspot under Linux x86_64 in VMware

    Hello!
    A reproducible crash of these 1.6 32 bit Java VMs is hinderung my application from starting when I want to start it under a x86_64 Linux kernel in VMware (Workstation and ESX):
    - java version "1.6.0_06"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_06-b02)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 10.0-b22, mixed mode, sharing)
    - java version "1.6.0_06"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_06-b02)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (build 10.0-b22, mixed mode)
    - java version "1.6.0_10-beta"
    Java(TM) SE Runtime Environment (build 1.6.0_10-beta-b23)
    Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (build 11.0-b11, mixed mode, sharing)
    Tested using there kernels:
    - Linux debian 2.6.18-6-amd64 #1 SMP Sun Feb 10 17:50:19 UTC 2008 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    - Linux openSUSE 2.6.22.5-31-default #1 SMP 2007/09/21 22:29:00 UTC x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    - Linux sles10-sp1-sdm 2.6.16.46-0.12-default #1 Thu May 17 14:00:09 UTC 2007 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux
    Sproradic but reproducible JVM (Hotspot) crashes while running a simple garbage collector stress application several times in parallel. hs_err files are generated each time. However, the "Problematic frame" address and library changes every time!
    Examples:
    # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Client VM (10.0-b22 mixed mode, sharing linux-x86)
    # Problematic frame:
    # C [libc.so.6+0xe4c9d] xdr_u_long+0xd
    VM state:not at safepoint (normal execution)
    # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (10.0-b22 mixed mode linux-x86)
    # Problematic frame:
    # C 0xf7f56acb
    VM state:at safepoint (normal execution)
    # Java VM: Java HotSpot(TM) Server VM (10.0-b22 mixed mode linux-x86)
    # Problematic frame:
    # C [libnss_compat.so.2+0x2e16] nsscompat_getpwnam_r+0x46
    VM state:synchronizing (normal execution)
    The problem only appears using JDK or JRE 1.6 32 bit edition on a Linux 2.6 x86_64 kernel in VMware. Tests using real hardware, using a i686 kernel and using JDK / JRE 1.6 64 bit edition or JDK / JRE 1.5 (32 bit and 64 bit) could not reproduce the crashes.
    Questions:
    - Is there a general stability problem when starting the 32 bit Java VM under Linux 64?
    - Does anybody have similar problems with
    - Java VM 32bit under Linux 64?
    - Java VM in VMware (both ESX and Workstation)?
    Simple stress test application:
    public class GCStress {
    private static Thread[] threads;
    private static java.util.Random random = new java.util.Random();
    private static int maxBytes;
    private static int numThreads;
    public static void main(String[] args) {
    numThreads = Integer.parseInt(args[0]);
    maxBytes = Integer.parseInt(args[1]);
    threads = new Thread[numThreads];
    for (int x = 0; x < numThreads; x++) {
    threads[x] = new Thread(new Allocator(), "Thread_" + x);
    threads[x].start();
    while (true) {
    for (int x = 0; x < numThreads; x++) {
    if (!threads[x].isAlive()) {
    threads[x] = new Thread(new Allocator(), "Thread_r" + x);
    threads[x].start();
    try {
    Thread.sleep(500);
    } catch (InterruptedException e) {
    // ignore
    private static class Allocator implements Runnable {
    public void run() {
    while (true) {
    int tSize = random.nextInt(maxBytes);
    // System.out.println(Thread.currentThread().getName()
    // + " allocating " + tSize / 1024 + "kb");
    byte[] tMemFiller = new byte[tSize];
    try {
    Thread.sleep(random.nextInt(200));
    } catch (InterruptedException e) {
    ; // ignore
    }

    The program is started like this:
    ./jdk1.6.0_06/bin/java -server -Xms32m -Xmx256m GCStress 500 10485760
    And I run it usually 5 times in parallel. 1 time seems not to be enough (I should test that tonight).
    However, I've tested using several -XX: flags, but nothing really helped! (-XX:+UseParallelGC, -XX:-UseTLAB, -XX:+UseSpinning -XX-UseThreadPriorities, -XX:-UseBiasedLocking, -XX:-UseLargePages)

  • Changing keyboard colors in MSI GT60 2PC series under Linux

    Hi,
    I intend to buy myself a laptop and I just would love to get one of MSI GT60 series but the thing is... I'm a nerd [']... ;(
    I will use Linux Debian or Gentoo on it and want to ask you about the compatibility with penguin. This multi-colored keyboard is great I love it but will I be able to customize it under Linux? What about other drivers?
    Yeah I know installing linux on gaming laptop is stupid but oh well. :P
    Thanks in advance

    I did run Linux Mint on my GT70 for a while,and as you may know Linux handles drivers in a different way to Windows.I didn't need any drivers at all to make the system functional,or indeed any system I have installed Linux on so far.I did download proprietary drivers for the Nvidia card but that was it. As for the keyboard,and in my case the S-Bar I didn't find any drivers for them,but then again I didn't really need them.
    Linux didn't stay on it for long though,as a gamer I was limited by what was available for the OS.
    If you want to see what your system runs like on Linux without upsetting the current OS try a 'Live'  USB boot of any flavour of Linux,but you may know that already anyway if you are into it.

  • Ultrabay Battery -- Change discharge behavior?

    I have a T400 with the optional ultrabay battery. The behavior seems to be that the extra battery is discharged entirely before moving on to the main battery. My understanding is that completely discharging a Li-Ion battery shortens the battery's lifespan. It seems to make more sense to either (1) drain the main battery first since it's larger and less likely to completely discharge before you find a power outlet or (2) alternate between the two batteries.
    Is there anyway to adjust the battery settings to achieve either of these?

    Hi all,
    I think, you missunderstand these 0% of battery charge. This does not mean, that the battery is discharged to 0 Volts. In that case, the battery would be destroyed immediately. These 0% are with respect to a minimum threshold voltage, such that the battery will not be damaged or its lifetime drastically reduced. When I have a look at my "fully" discharged ultrabay battery, I see that it has still more then 11V, which is no problem. The battery has 3 cells, each with 3.6 Volts. And a Li-Po Cell (Li-Ion is similar) can be discharged to about 2.8V without being damaged. 3 x 2.8V = 8.4V V for the whole battery. 11V is far avay from that, so there is enough reserve. If the voltage falls under a certain voltage, the computer turns off but not just because there is not enough power. Instead this is a safety mechanism for the battery which is implemented in hardware. So I think it's not necessary to wory about the battery.
    Even though I think, that the user should be able to decide which battery discharges first. Especially if lenovo writes:
    "Since the battery works in the Ultrabay you don't have to suspend the system to swap out the system battery to use the ThinkPad for an extended period of time."
    That's what I wanted to do, change the main battery, while the system is on. But with this default behaviour of battery management, it's impossible because the U-battery is discharged first. Escept you carry the U-battery seperately with you the whole day and insert it shortly before the main battery is empty. But that's not very comfortable.
    I foud one way to achieve that the main battery is discharged first. I have a T400 and if you apply the small switch on the right if as you wanted to remove the battery and the pad to pull jumps out, then the main battery is discharging while the ultrabay battery is still connected (appears in the Power manager) and supplies the PC with power if the main battery gets empty. But also that is not very elegant.
    I hope I helped a little. If someone has a real solution to this problem, please tell us. I know that there is a solution, even if not supported by lenovo, what is a shame. (Something with ACPI events I guess but I don't have experience with that)

  • Email button or menu Email Link does not work. Firefox 29.0 on Linux Mint 13

    Neither the Email Link menu option under File nor the Email Button installed from the customise menu option when placed on the tool bar work.
    Thunderbird 24.5.0 is the email client both installed on Linux Mint 13 with latest updates.
    Nothing happens at all when on a web page and the email link is clicked or the envelope icon is clicked.
    Help appreciated.
    Regards
    Cavemann

    Hello
    The Preferred applications menu list showed Thunderbird as the email program but it did not link the email button to firefox.
    I had to eventually go to the Firefox preferences and in Applications, Thunderbird was not listed. So I selected Other and browsed to the filesystem / Usr/Bin and selected the Thunderbird icon which then put Thunderbird in the Firefox Applications options for email.
    The email link / button then worked.
    Now I have to sort out the link for emailing photos from Picasa as this does not work either
    Thanks for help
