Determine file size as saved on disk

When i open a file in PSCS5 I want to know the size of the file on disk without going to finder. The "Document size" shown at bottom of image frame is often, almost always, significantly different from that on disk.
I am certain i am missing something simple.
Thanks for help.
vince

There is no way to know the size on disk without looking at the saved file on disk, either in the Finder or Bridge.
Photoshop doesn't show you the size on disk, just the size in memory.

Short term, free up some disk space. Long term, move the library to a bigger drive.

• Preview increases pdf file size when saving

When I save a PDF journal article using Preview, it often increases the file size by 2x - 4x, regardless of whether I have added annotations. In the attached image, you can see I downloaded a journal article (2.3 MB), opened it in Preview, duplicated and saved it and the resulting copied file was 6.1 MB.
This is a problem because I it signifiantly increases the size of my synced reference library. It is worse with larger files (25 MB eBooks that increase to 80 MB).
Can anyone help me find a way to annotate a journal article and preserve the original file size? I have tried Adobe Reader (awful and buggy interface, but preserves the original size!), and several other PDF apps (e.g. Skim) seem to rely on Apple's PDF engine where the file results in a larger size as well. Using Quartz filters to reduce file size within Preview is not effective. I'm happy to purchase a program if it works well.

I have also experienced this issue. My PDF file of 300MB increased to over 900MB when I simply put one straight line annotation onto it. Effectively this made the PDF unusable since it is now very slow to open and it is too large to transfer onto my iPad. I've experienced this multiple times with a variety of PDF files, and so now simply avoid changing them in any way in Preview. I have written to Apple via apple.com/feedback and have talked to Apple store 'Geniuses' about this. Apparently it is a known issue, but there was no promise of a resolution. I love the way Preview opens quickly and displays files and also allows beautiful, smooth scrolling of PDFs. It's a pity that there's this enormous problem with annotating. If anyone knows of a solution, it would be great to hear. I've tried other PDF programmes such as Adobe for Mac, but wasn't too impressed.

• Determining File Sizes

I am involved in a photo contest that allows only minimal cropping of an image entered. Entries are allowed to be cropped no more than 20%, so entered file must be at least 80% of original size. Anybody have any suggestion as to an easy way to figure that out. What I need to know is the file size of the croppped VERSION relative to the original.
Thanks
HPL

OK, I have been trying to determine percent cropped by comparing the total number of pixels (W x H) in the original compared to the cropped version, but I'm still not too sure that I'm doing this correctly. In the "Metadata View: File Info" HUD, I have a line for "Master Pixel Size" (2332 X 3504 in this case) and another line for "Pixel Size" (1704 X 2393 in this case). However, in the "Adjustments HUD" there is a "Crop" section and it is showing the pixel count as 2094 x 3150. I believe that the pixel count in the Adjustments HUD is probably the correct one for this particular crop, but if so, what accounts for the difference between that value, the "Master Pixel Size", and the "Pixel Size"? As cropping more than 20% will result in a DQ and as there is significant money involved in the contest (approx $70,000.00), I really need to get this right.
I am finding this very confusing. Thanks,
HPL

• How can I reduce the file size when saving a psd as a pdf

I have a psd with graphics and text, it is 8.5 x 11, 300 ppi
I flatten the image and go to save as .pdf I un-check all of the options in general.
In compression, I have tried a dozen different combinations and the way I've found to get a document that is not pixelated or blurry is to use jpeg 2000 > lossless or jpeg > maximum.
So I have a high quality document but the file sizes are around 900 kb.
I have downloaded other people's documents of the exact same type and size (8.5 x 11, 300 ppi) that I am making and viewed them in Photoshop, they are not pixelated or blurry and their file sizes are 300 kb or even less than 200 kb
How are they doing this?!

Delete all unused, invisible layers.
Sometimes zip compression is better than jpg compression (in the pdf output settings). Zip is lossless, and works better with non gradient colour or no images.
Flattening the image before you save it to pdf can reduce the file size if you are using jpg compression.
Post a preview of your pdf and we can comment further on how to reduce the file size.

• File Adapter determining file size

I have added a Header Variable to my Receive activity so that I can capture the size of the file coming in. I've also added a "size" element to the InboundFileHeader.wsdl.
I can't figure out how to populate that header variable! I was hoping it would just be populated automatically since I've added the element to the wsdl but no such luck, just null variables.
Thanks.

In 10.1.3.1 it does shows up as header variable, but fileadapter wsdl file has only filename and directory name as element.
I have not tried to modify adapter wsdl file, but here is little hacky way to get the size:
Let's your header variable is Variable_FileHeader, please defined two string variables naemd Variable_Header_String and Variable_Size, and doing following assign operation you should be able to get the file size.
<copy>
<from expression="ora:getContentAsString(bpws:getVariableData('Variable_FileHeader','/ns3:InboundFileHeaderType'))"/>
<to variable="Variable_Header_String"/>
</copy>
<copy>
<from expression="substring-before(substring-after(bpws:getVariableData('Variable_Header_String'),'<size>'),'</size>')"/>
<to variable="Variable_Size"/>
</copy>

• Determining remote file size.

Hi All,
I have written a program that downloads file resources across the internet using URL's. Stream based communications via URL allow me to download files however I am wondering if there is actually a way of determining the size of the file on the server side. Obviously I can determine file size on my system once the file is downloaded, however I want to be doubly shore that files are successfully downloading by first determining the size of the file on the server and then checking that file size against the file size on my computer. This has become necessary because occasionally files are downloading incorrectly and Exceptions are not being thrown in those instances.

JProg,
I am relatively new to programming so I am having some
conceptual difficulties with your suggestion, it
sounds really good, but I can't honestly say that I
understand this fully.
When you say "dump a java class on the server that
will serve as a local file metadata querier" I am a
little stumped. I have a basic understanding of what a
metadata querier is (basically something that gets
info off the server for you) however there are two
things that I would appreciate help with:
1). How does one go about dumping a java class onto
the server?
2). What class would one use?
If you can provide any help with these two points it
will be greatly appreciated. Thanks for the advice so
far.
Regards
Davo
What I meant is create a Java Class that queries File MetaData. Compile it, then put it on the server.
Create an RMI server on the server-side that you would use as a proxy for this class.
From the client-side, call the proxy via the RMI Stubs that were generated when you compiled rmi server. Pass the file name, the stub will send the filename to the querier proxy that serves as RMI server, then this proxy will call the actual file meta data querier passing to it the filename, get the metadata in return, and sends them back to the client.

• Estimated File Size not updating

I have a project in vers. 5.5 that I am exporting.
I am saving as a Windows Media File and am going from 1080 to 720. File size is critical, however the Estimate File Size in Encoder seems to get stuck. For instance, if I half the frame rate I see no difference in file size. I would think that there would be significant reduction in estimated file size if half the frames are being tossed. Am I not understanding something about how this works?

There are only two things that significantly affect file size - duration and bitrate. Changing other specs may affect quality, but those two determine file size.

• Preview: Save as PDF while approximately keeping the file size ?

Hello!
I know that several good discussions took place about the way to reduce the file size when saving (as) a PDF from the application Preview.
I tried:
• the default poor quality "Reduce File Size" preset filter,
• the additional filters provided by Jérôme Colas (http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6250289)
• the "Compress PDF Workflow 4.0" that reenables feature for Leopard (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/compresspdfworkflow.html)
Has anyone come across a method to _keep in about the *original size*_ of the original Adobe PDF ?
When saving a 3 MB PDF with Preview, I see it increase to 80 MB, so that dramatically reducing it to 40MB is not really satisfying, is it?
Thank you in advance for any suggestion !

Bernd, thank you for your attempt to help but the option dialog windows do not contain the same options. There are numerous other posts on this forum about this issue and there is no answer. Clearly, there is an issue. I have submitted this issue to our internal help desk.

• Help to resize at a file size threshold

I feel as though there must be a simple solution to this issue but I just can't break through. I am attempting to resize an image so that it will be uploadable in a media building program. This program does not allow me to import images greater than 200K and so I went to the image resize function in Photoshop CC. There I found under Image>Image Size, as always, the window which includes the size and dimension attributes of the image (which, incidentally, is a single layer psd as "Background"). As I change the dimensions of the image, I can get the Image Size in the window to reduce to under 200K by changing the resolution, width, and height as needed. When I save the image as a jpg, it does not allow the image to be saved as anything smaller than 1.1M. In the jpeg options window, the file size when saved at a quality of 12 is 1.2M but is 1.1M at a quality setting of 0. I must be missing something. Can anyone shed some light on this for me, please? Thanks!

That worked. For the sake of the discussion, do you suppose that there was something about this image (like metadata) that would simply not allow it to be compressed any further than the minimum size I described? It would make sense given that the image quality was progressively worse as I experimented with reopening the newly saved and slightly smaller file each time. Even then, I could only get a small reduction in total data quantity but the images became poorer and poorer, as you would expect, as the jpeg options window told me I was getting smaller and smaller. The image started to look like it was capped from somebody's Minecraft screen but the size was still up around a meg.

• Why is same file different sizes after saving for web?

I have files that I save in PSCS3, under, "Save for Web & Devices" and I indicate under "optimize to file size" that they should be no larger than 60K. After item is saved and I go to "Get info", it says the file is 60K. Yet when I open the file in PS and go to Image Size, it says 467K. Why the discrepancy? Thanks for your feedback!

One is the compressed file size on disk (60K). The other is the uncompressed image size (369 pixels x 432 pixels x 8 bits per channel x 3 channels / 8 bits per byte / 1024, since K really is 1024, not 1000).

when round tripping with photoshop cc, i get a saved psd file with my original raw,the problem is these are high file sizes and taking a lot of space,can i stop this?

That's not the workflow that I use. I have my Lightroom preferences set to create TIF images when going to Photoshop. I keep the original raw file and the TIF image (usually reduced to an 8-bit image) and only export JPEG's when they are needed to send to a lab or to send to someone over the Internet. JPEG files are highly compressed. I only create them when they are needed, and they are discarded as soon as they have been used for their intended purpose. I keep the raw file and the Photoshop-created TIF in my library. This requires extra disk space. But I always have the highest quality files available.

• Determining the Size of a Time Machine Backup File

When I highlight a Time Machine backup file and then click on Get Info under File to determine the size of the backup file, the disk drive works its heart out, but the Get Info window never arrives at a determination of the file size being seemingly stuck in the "calculating size" state.
Anybody have an idea of what's going on?

Ah, you are new to Time Machine. Sorry, that's how you view and restore from your backups. Hold your mouse down on the TM icon in your Menubar and select +*Enter Time Machine,+* or click the TM icon in your Dock, or the +*Time Machine+* app in your Applications folder.
If I look at the pull-down menu under Finder, I do not see Enter Time Machine. Am I looking in the wrong place? Obviously, since I couldn't get by the first step, I never got to a "size" column, and to be honest, I don't know that I have ever seen a Finder window with a "size" column.
You can add one, by selecting View > as List, then View > Show View Options in a Finder window's menubar, and select or de-select whatever columns you want.
I'm a little embarrassed by my lack of knowledge, but if I don't acknowledge my shortcomings, I'll never get the question answered. Thanks for taking your time to try to help me.
Don't be. We all started at zero at one time or another.
I'm not sure just what you were looking for in your first post. The size of all your TM backups is just the amount used on your external disk, unless you have other data in the same partition (which isn't a good idea). Because of the way TM works, you can't really determine the size of an individual backup, and it really wouldn't mean much.
Perhaps if you clarified just what you want to know, we can help answer it.
