Determine if NIC can run on Gigabit network

I have a bunch of Solaris servers that will be moved to a gigabit network connection. How do I view the network settings on the network cards and determine if they can run on gigabit network? What commands I can use? This will help me if my group has to purchase new network cards. Thanks for you help.

You can also trawl the Sunsolve support web site for Infodocs,
and spend time at Docs.Sun.Com and the Sun System Handbook, as well.
Generally, you just need to "know" your hardware.
Your newer systems will likely have a gigabit interface inside,
while the older systems will only have 10/100 chipsets for connectivity.
Your bge interfaces tell me those are newer systems,
with a Broadcom Gigabit Ethernet chipset.
hme is a 10/100 chipset that was widely use in a previous generation
of Sun's SPARC-based systems. ( Highspeed Media Ethernet )

    Hello all,
    I am  trying to figure out if I can run a gbps network over coax. The situation is this and forgive me if I use the wrong terms.
    1) ONT to Main Router (old Actiontecvia ver. F) is connected via COAX. Cat 5A from  computer to router.
    2) Second Router in basement (Ver F), as MOCA bridge, via COAX. PS3 wired to Router 2 via CAT5
    Here are the questions.
    1) I'm considering the Ceton InfiniTV 6 ETH to eliminate one or more of my existing settop boxes. The information about the CETON says I should have a gigabyte network to best accomidate use of the tuner, and based on my exisitng equipment, I need to upgrade. I am happy to buy the new "GigE" router to do this.
    2) However, I have also read that I will not be able to get the speed I need from COAX. Running CAT 5a or 6 is not an option, I have to use the existing COAX connections for the various rooms in the house.
    3) So, can I get true Gig Networking using the COAX?
    4) Do I need TWO new Routers (one to replace the main router and one to replace the one in the basement)?
    I'm willing to invest in the upgrade, but only if I can get the network speed over the COAX connection. Again, thanks for any advise you can provide.

    No, gigabit over current 1.0 and 1.1 (and even the newer version 2.0) of MoCA cannot do Gigabit.  If you do get one of the higher speed tiers from Verizon they will connect you via ethernet to the ONT and give you a gigabit router.

  • [Solved] Can't get gnome network manager running

    Alright this one is a head scratcher.  I've folowed the wiki for network manager to a T except I can't get the network manager icon to show up (I have notification addon already running).  I don't have any network loss though.

    I assume you're running nm-applet --sm-disable once you get a window manager session up?
    Try starting networkmanager after hal. From the wiki:
    You must also "disable" the default network daemon, and add the hal, dhcdbd and networkmanager daemons in this order:
    DAEMONS=( ... !network hal dhcdbd networkmanager ... )

  • Need help trying to determine what hardware I can run for develpoment testing purposes for Solaris Sparc 11.2

    I have a large client that is looking to upgrade from Solaris 5.9 up to Solaris 11.2. I need to find some hardware I can run in house to do development, run tests and run setups/configuration on a 64 bit Sparc machine. I know Solaris 11 dropped support for some of the UltraSPARC II, III, IV series. However I need to have a setup in shop locally for me to work on. Any ideas on if buy a sun blade workstation or another workstation that I could get Solaris 11.2 installed? I don't necessarily need the GUI desktop but the text/curses based setup is all I need. Any ideas on where to go? Seems like the cutoff from Solaris 10 to 11 was a pretty big one regarding legacy support of older hardware. Also I know there are x86 distributions of Solaris 11.2 but I have 3rd party software that is compiled on Sparc.

    I have a i7 that is 64 bit I want to run in 32 bit how can I view which bit its running ?

    If it's OS X 10.7 it's 64 bit OS, if you have 32 bit Intel programs they can run, but only use half the registers, swtich to 64 bit versions of your programs when avaialble.

  • I can't map a network drive from Windows 7, using the exact same settings that work fine with Vista or XP

    I have Windows 7  64 bit Home Premium,and I can't map a network drive.  I use a Cisco VPN client to connect to my University network, and then when I go to map the drive I get a message that it can't be found.  I have done web research it seems that I am unable to edit the local security settings (apparently you can do this in Ultimate and Professional versions), and that this may be the culprit.  Does Microsoft make some patch available?  My IT people, and the tech help at HP are baffled by this.  If Windows 7 Home Premium does not allow for mapping of network drives, then I'm dumping it and returning to Vista.  Has anybody had similar problems?

    I purchased Windows 7 Home 3xuser license pack for ~140 US I kep hearing friend sayhow much faster it was than Vista 32bit so I thought hey let’s “upgrade”
    .. I looked up the definition of the word “upgrade” the following is what I found:

    So we,re all clear on what an upgrade is suppose to be. I wanted tomake sure I understood before I proceeded.
    I installed a copy on my latptop Toshiba Centrino 1.83 Ghz/3 G Ram decent computer for all intent and purposes. It’s been working fine
    on Vista but running slow. So I went through MS “requirements checking” to determine if my computer passed the MS test and worth of such the honor and also get MS’s blessing before I moved forward with the “upgrade”.
    I proceeded with the upgrade went relatively smoothly had to uninstall a few programs but I figure that’s such a 
    small price to pay for such great enhancement that I will receive from my “upgrade”. Approximately 4 to 5 hours later after minimal reboots I was all set to go with my new upgraded OS. It was working as prescribed faster than Vista cleaner
    interface sorta, helpful little taskbar gadgets. I was stoked that night I went to be thinking I will go to work and be a rock star on my brand newly “upgraded” computer.
    Oh and by the way, I was so thrilled about Windows 7 I even upgrade my home computer as well.
    I go into work and I have a very big user migration that night, I am an network engineer and I use my laptop for work I use Visio, Wireshark
    and others, all the tools that help us do our job efficiently and effectively.
    I sit down turn on my computer it boots faster than Vista and I’m just chomping at the bit to get going have lots of work to do. So let
    go back for a minute an look at the definition of “upgrade”

    I have my computer up I have logged in (locally) not on a domain as I was not when I was on Vista OS. I wanted to attach the server to get some
    files so I go to map a drive………………. Hmmmph ….. that’s weird I cannot map a drive …… let’s try this again……… hmmmph…. what this domain thing going here I
    never need that before in the lesser product Vista but ok I’ll add my
    \\servername\folder and my domain.org\username..... hit enter and hmmmmmph …. It ask me for my password again.. well I could have fat gingered it so I’ll type it in reallllllllly slow.. hmmmmmmph ….. again no such luck…
    So I decide consult a colleague of mine who recommended I “upgrade” to Windows 7. After speaking with me he tells me oh! You need
    Windows 7 Professional to do the same things you did in Vista home … I’m perplexed by this but let’s once more take a look at the word “upgrade” to “enhance
    and/or make better
    ”. So now I’m a little perturbed by this little bit of information but I suck it up and decide I’ll drop another ~100.00 US on an “upgrade” to Professional small price to pay for such a great product.. I mean have
    you seen those commercial WOW!
    I make my purchase download and once “upgrade” to new “upgrade” with even more improvement over Vista and XP I mean
    with those two OS’s it took me all of 5 second to map a drive SURELY Windows 7 Professional will map a drive like no one business.
    After 
    few reboots my computer has been fully “upgraded” and ‘upgrade” again to W7 Pro and I’m off to the races ready to get to work cause my migration will be starting in a few hours and I want to be prepared. Sytsem reboots quickly
    I’m logged and ready to start getting my information I so desperately need. I go to map my drive I figure I’ll help W7Pro out I’ll be proactive and use “domain.org\username” that way W7Pro 
    will like me and think oh! this man is brilliant. I hit enter with my correct password that I type realllllly slow. …… waited it’s thinking for sure this is it .. the anticipation is killing me the excitement is overwhelming …….
    THUD my world just came crashing down ..no luck .. no login ..no mapping drives…I’m now on hour 6 of this ridiculous journey to the “upgrade” to “upgrade” ____. So now I’m left to forum because MS surely does not
    think I am going to pay them $275.00 and hour for support on something that should have work right out of the box.
    So I’m on day to I have tried everything on this forum page to get my mapped drive to work with nothing working for me. It appears that
    if I want to use my computer I will have to rolled back to the lesser (Vista).
    Just in case you’re wondering how I made it through the user migration. I had my co-worker bring me my XP computer worked like it’s
    was suppose to.

  • HP EliteBook 8540w - drivers can't load for network adapters

    Seriously. This is how I imagined life before the the internet. It's horrible.
    So here's the deal...I suspect that all of this could have stemmed from some new VPN software that I installed for work. I'm not 100% sure that that's the issue but that's the last thing I installed, before windows did a software update, before the issues started to occur.
    Here's what's happening:
    I cannot enable my wireless
    I cannot access the internet via an ethernet cable.
    There are a lot of adapters showing up in my device manager...I'm not sure how many of them truly belong there. For example, my NIC card..."Intel(R) 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection - Deterministic Network Enhancer Miniport"...there's also this one "Intel(R) 82577LM Gigabit Network Connection #2"
    There are a number of adapters that have an exclamation mark next to them. I cannot unstall them.
    I do not see the exclamation marks when I start the machine in safe mode. I do see them when I start in safe mode with networking
    I have tried downloading drivers from Intel...I was not able to install them.
    I am the admistrator of the machine.
    Can anyone help? I'm kind of at a loss here.

  • Wireless card can not find any network.

    I have 2 wireless card:
    TP-Link PCI card:TL-WN851N
    D-Link USB card:DWA-127
    both card work fine under windows.
    but TP-Link can not find any wireless network,even if I moved my wirelss router to same room with TP-Link wireless card.
    Anybody have an idea ?

  • The benefits of gigabit networking -- are they real?

    I'm setting up a small network (like 10 machines) in the midst of a much larger corporate environment. Our IT corporate department wants these machines to be connected to their network, but has flat-out stated the network speed will be 100BT, not gigabit ethernet. Mostly because they presumably don't want to upgrade switches, repeaters, wiring and servers.
    They claim that even with the intense graphics (ie, 500MB Photoshop files and big InDesign files) and HD video work (mostly Adobe Premiere) we'll be doing, 100BT will be adequate.
    Can that possibly be right?
    I mean, if big graphics and HD video don't require true gigabit networking, what does?
    My proposal, given our expected usage, is Cat6 cabling throughout, gigabit switches, 10,000RPM drives, and gigabit ethernet throughout. I hate to go to battle with the big corporate IT guys if I'm totally wrong, but aren't the benefits of true gigabit networking clearly obvious?
    I'd love to hear your thoughts, especially as they pertain to real-world (not theoretical) speed improvements.

    My experience is personal, not enterprise IT level, but I have gigabit between my Macs. I use it with Photoshop and video files stored on one Mac and edited on another. The throughput is so high it's almost like using a FireWire hard disk; I hardly notice I'm using networked files. I love gigabit, I love that almost every Mac has it.
    I think you are right and your IT dept is wrong. First off, we all know specs are ideal and real world is lower. 100 megabits per second is just 12.5 megabytes per second...if the network is operating at its theoretical limit! Which it won't be. Let's be optimistic and say you'll get 10 megabytes per second. For graphics and video apps, that's horrible, worse than forcing you all to use external USB 2 drives. Of course you'd want gigabit Ethernet. I don't know what your IT dept is smoking. It's just 10 machines. I paid like $50 for my Gigabit switch, and the cables are cheap now.
    Have you thought about running a test in front of them at file editing/saving performance between two machines comparing 10/100 and gigabit? It should be a cheap and easy test to run, and I would hope the results would be visibly obvious. I do not think you can expect to edit HD video over 10/100 without wanting to slit your own wrist at some point out of frustration.

    Rsync was incredibly slow, so I tried measuring network performance using iperf and noticed a significantly lower speed when copying from OpenSuse to Arch, rather than the other way around.

    Any ideas how that can be possible? (840 vs 67 Mbit/s) is a tremendous difference, obviously.
    Althrough I'm not even sure which machine is configured incorrectly.

    After fiddling around with the cabling and different configurations, I can confirm the problem actually lies with OpenSuse.
    If I use iperf from a Live CD (grml) on the Laptop, both directions give full performance.
    On the other hand, if I boot grml on the Desktop (replacing Arch) and the Laptop continues running OpenSuse, the problem remains.
    What is even weirder is the fact that OpenSuse also manages to give full performance, if I have the cables connected before booting the system.
    As soon as the system is running and I disconnect the connection for any time, the problem occurs again.
    I suspect some form of duplex mismatch (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Duplex_mismatch).
    However, using ethtool, both systems agree that Auto-negotiation is on, the connection is full duplex and the speed should be 1000Mb/s (1000baseT/Full).
    I guess I will simply ditch OpenSuse and install another Linux distribution on the Laptop.
    Although I would like to understand the actual cause of the problem.
