Determine/Reset Scale of Linked Graphics - Maximize Image Quality

Hi, we're currently using Illustrator CS4 for website comps to quickly mock-up pages for our clients to sign-off (we've explored using Fireworks, but there's just some major things missing that we need in regards to typography, global swatches, etc.).
But we would like to generate some final images from these files as well for the sake of efficiency, as I believe Illustrator is 'supposed' to use the same Save for Web interface as Photoshop. It's just very efficient for us to have our slices designed, setup, optimized and named in this same master document.
But I ran a test comparing the results when generating a final JPEG from Illustrator vs. Photoshop using the same exact settings, and on a file that was 100% of final size. But the Photoshop file was significantly sharper. So I investigated a bit more and found out that the image was scaled just a bit in Illustrator (maybe 110% or less). When I got the image to be as close to 100% as possible in Illustrator, the differences were negligible.
- So what is the quickest/easiest method of resetting an imported image to 100% of the actual size in Illustrator?
I look at the Transform palette (where I would see the scaling in InDesign), but it doesn't tell me anything. I had to look into the Link Information in the links palette to find the scale, but I can't change anything from there.
- Any other tips for keeping linked files looking as good and sharp as possible all the way through the process to Saving for Web?
- If the original image has been retouched and optimized (it's a high quality image) in Photoshop before importing into Illustrator, 'SHOULD' the results from Illustrator match Photoshop when using Save for Web and the same settings?
THANKS! It is much more efficient for us to save our graphics from Illustrator, but we can't risk losing image quality in the process.

Yeah, I see that as long as the image has a resolution of 72dpi, it does come in at 100% of size. ..
For what you want to achieve  you are right, sort of, but your statement is wrong.
Images are always placed at 100% size as indicated in the info when you double click the links in the Links palette. However you have to understand what size means here. If the image has metadata containing dimensional information then that is the size in Illustrator. For example if the metadata says 5 x 5 inches it will be placed as 100% with that size according to the Illustrator's rulers regardless of what the pixel resolution of the linked image is - it can be 5 or 5000 pixels per inch. If the images don't have metadata describing the dimensions then Illustrator assumes that 72 pixels are 1 inch and will place the image with that size at 100% scale. For example if the image is with 720 x 720 pixels, Illustrator will show it as 10 x 10 inches at 100% scale.
With work for the web you are most interested in the pixel size of the images and objects. Change the units in File > Document Setup to Pixels. But have in mind that these are 72 pixels occupying one inch on the ruler in Illustrator and not the pixel resolution of the linked images. So, the Transform palette showing the selected images or objects with pixel dimensions will matter if you save for the web or export to a raster image file format where you can specify the pixel dimensions of the image. The pixel dimensions in Illustrator will not matter at all if you print the illustrator file in which case the resolution of the linked images will be used - not the pixel space they occupy in Illustrator. But for the Web all that matters is the pixel dimensions in Illustrator. So if you want the ppi (pixels per inch) in Illustrator to match the actual ppi resolutions of the placed images (links), you have to save all images from Photoshop as 72 ppi or remove their metadata. This will ensure that no resampling occurs when you save images at 100% scale from illustrator for the web .
In Photoshop you can use its automatd batch processing features to change quickly the ppi of multiple images.
As for the resampling of the scaled images I believe Illustrator and Photoshop use the same algorithms

  • Lightroom export file size: why so small? How can I maximize image quality?

My image file sizes are much smaller after editing and exporting through Lightroom. Is it impossible to maintain original file size to preserve image quality? Will this smaller file size have negative impact on prints? Any help is appreciated!

Jpgs should never be edited, except as a last resort. And it defeats the purpose of working with raw files if you export a jpg, and then edit it.
Agreed. Unfortunately there are many cameras that only output JPEG format files. The camera file (or any other original JPEG file) is your "raw" unedited file inside LR. If you need to send the file to someone else for further editing who doesn't have LR then Exporting with 100% Quality setting might make sense. I say "might" because it's still possible to get very good results using lower Quality setting JPEGs if you only re-save the file one (1) time after further editing. I agree that 16 bit, ProPhoto RGB, TIFF Export files are best for "critical" work and when using 'Edit in Photoshop' from LR.
I suggest taking a look at the JPEG compression image tests on Jeffrey Friedl's Blog. It's a wealth of information! LR's Quality settings range from 0% to 100% or 100 Quality levels. In reality there are only 13 Quality levels, which are the same as in PS.

If someone gives me a jpg to edit, I always save it as a tiff and convert to 16-bit, to minimize furhter deterioration. I realize that this will not be true 16-bit - no information is added to the image - but my impression is that it will withstand heavy editing better, and not end up with a comb-like histogram.
Why not simply Import the JPEG file into LR and do all your editing non-destructively? There's no need to convert the JPEG file to TIFF unless you need to use LR 'Edit in PS.' Lightroom uses a16 bit/color, ProPhoto RGB, Linear Gamma workspace for all images even when editing sRGB JPEG files.

  • Maximize image quality

Under Preferences I have set the image quality to 'high' but
I still get blurring in images (SnagIt) screen shots which I insert
into PowerPoint. When viewing in PPT the images are very clear. But
after Presenter has converted them to Flash and published them to
Adobe server the images become significantly blurred. Is there any
other way to improve the image quality? For example - using a
certain file type to insert images into PPT, a setting in PPT, a
setting in SnagIt, or a different setting in Presenter? Or, is this
just the reality of converting PPT to Flash?
    Any help is appreciated
    thanks

Unfortunately, Breeze applies some rather heafty compression
on bitmap images, including gifs/jpgs and pngs.
Others have reported that you can improve detail of
screenshots a bit by using Captivate to capture the screenshots and
then export the imagery as a .swf. Then, go back to the Breeze menu
and trace down to the Insert Flash option to import the swf created
in Captivate. Results are usually better, but it does require
having to take an alternative approach. And for folks who don't
have Captivate, it might not be a practical approach either.
Two other possible solutions, but both require the right kind
of software to do it: If you have other applications that export as
.swf (like Illustrator, Freehand, etc), you might want to try
importing your screenshot and then exporting as a swf from there,
or you could do the same thing right from Flash if you have it.
    Hope that helps!

  • Radeon 6850 poor image quality via hdmi

Hi have a  connected via HDMI cable to a Sony Bravia 32in 100hz LCD TV and the image quality is poor Windows appears really pixalated, have used this TV with on board graphics and image quality is great any ideas?

Still you should be able to bump the Res up with DVI to DVI if it has that port.  VGA PC to DVI TV will work 1080P.  Some manufacturer though do not allow DVI to do 1080p I read somewhere.  My LG 50" TV has every port I could think of DVI VGA RCA COAX HDMI probably more that I dont even know. It does 1080p with DVI but HDMI is easier with the sound.

  • RDS Image Quality; lossless or lossy?

Hello, is the Windows 2012 Server RDS desktop session lossless or lossy? In other words is the compressed desktop image/data of the remote desktop perfectly reconstructed from
the compressed data? I would like to use RDS for
a remote medical viewing task, but the desktop I am viewing must be perfectly replicated across multiple hi-resolution monitors. The image quality can not be lossy or degraded in any way. If I had the bandwidth LAN&WAN (which I do), is this possible with

    Thanks

    Hi Frank,
You may set the RDSH server(s) to Lossless using the below group policy object:

  • Maintain Linked Graphics in document files

I would like to use SharePoint to maintain version control on documents that retain linked graphics.  Does SharePoint have a means to maintain the linking of image files in these type of publications?  Is there a workflow that we can use for
this purpose?  I'd like to use SharePoint as our main version control application if it has the linking capability.

    Hi,
According to your description, my understanding is that you want to maintain the linking to the image files after you update the documents with graphics linking to SharePoint library.
Per my knowledge, when you add graphic linking in Word, it causes Word to create an active link between the graphic in your document and the original graphic file. After you upload the document to SharePoint library, if other users view the document in other
machine, it may not find the path, which fails to display the image.
As a workaround, you could insert the graphic file to your document, which displays fine in SharePoint library.

    Hi Sumit,
I have used the entity btadminh to create a model node.
this i have used for a table view.
initially, this i'm not using as cross component but with in the component.
    i can put this way:
i have created a custom component with only one view(table view).
this view has only one context node(model node).
this model node shows the basic structure of the output i need.
i have to populate this table view with values(which i'm fetching from backend tables).
i can do this by value node but, at the next step i have to call a standard component from the order number.
so, the concept of model node.
basic doubt is, am i missing some steps while using bol entities/model nodes in my view?
in the same process, i have one more issue:
the getter methods, get_<fieldname> is not being triggered. i checked while debugging also.
had i missed some coding, still the getter methods should be triggered(since the view and node creation is through wizard).
need some pointers on this. pls revert back for any clarification on the above issues, if confusing.

  • Embedding linked graphics?

Does anyone know if it is possible to use a script to embed all linked graphics into a doc? I've looked for 'embed' in the Applescript/Indesign library, but there are no entries for images. I want to add this functionality to a script that saves to multiple formats for a production workflow and embeds the graphics in order to create an archive version of the adverts.

It's not exactly intuitive -- you need to use the "unlink" command, for example:
unlink every link of document 1
