"Determing Gapless Playback Information" - AGAIN!

Everytime I update my ipod, iTunes has to determine gapless playback information for 400+ songs (not nearly my entire library) - what's going on? Is there anyway I can make this stop? It drives me insane.
Thanks!

I am having the same problem. Every time I update my iPod it has to "determine gapless playback information" for several hundred songs even though these songs were loaded onto my iPod long ago. I am using a 5g iPod 30gb with iTunes 7.0.2 and iPod software 1.2. Please let me know how to correct this problem.

  • ITunes crashing - Determing gapless playback information

I am having a big problem with itunes, since my main drive crash with all my music, i had was to trash my library and restart from what every music I can find on my other drives.
    Problems problems....
    1. Adding music itunes will crash
    2. Most time it will crash while trying to determing gapless playback information
    3. and just at startup it will crash
I have repaired permissions and all the fancy stuff but still problem, now apple has updated to 8 and the problem was never fixed any ideas anyone????

    Hi,
Try deleting the iTunes preference file. /Users/YourName/Library/Preferences. Open the Preferences folder, locate this file: com.apple.iTunes.plist drag that file to the Trash, empty the Trash and reboot. You will have to reset your iTunes preferences, but this is the only way to find out if the file is corrupted and considering you are experiencing so many crashes... that might be the culprit.

  • Constantly determing gapless playback information

When I sync my iPod, import a new song, or add a movie to iTunes (and even at random times) iTunes will determine Gapless Playback information. This is rather irritating, but I want to make sure there is no problem with my library (i.e. corrupt library file or something). It's bugging the crap out of me, and further, I don't want my library to suddenly stop working (I've had that before, less than a picnic, to be sure).
Does anyone else have this problem, or more importantly, a suggestion as to a solution? I have checked through the kbase and the discussions and it seems this isn't an isolated incident, yet no solution popped up.
and yes, I do have to have it on...Dark Side of the Moon (as well as others) sounds horrible without it on.
    Thanks much,
    Macinator

Deselecting "part of a gapless album" only affects Crossfade Playback. If it's checked, Crossfade Playback won't fade one track out and fade the next one in; it has no other purpose.
All iTunes tracks should be gapless. Just let it finish the process once, and you won't have to worry about it again.

  • Determing Gapless Playback Information.. CRASH

Since I installed v 7, iTunes (and my computer) freezes as iTunes tries to "Determine Gapless Playback Information" by scanning all my tracks. It gets stuck on one (or several possibly), and there is nothing I can do except reboot my laptop. Can anyone help? The only way to avoid this happening is by stopping iTunes scanning all my tracks the second I boot it up, but this is obviously some kind of bug... thank you

  • Frozen itunes still determing gapless playback information

hey guys! my itunes froze up when i was trying to add music to it. thirteen songs in to "determining gapless playback information," it froze up. my itunes will stay frozen until my computer shuts down, and the only way to exit is to go to my task manager. i have tried uninstalling and reinstalling itunes, but it goes back to the same screen. any suggestions?

@ Katrina S: Tried, still does it. Thanks though!
I could of course just remove them from the library, but keep the files, as it's just a fraction of the collection. Though, it's still ennoying for a collector to do such. Moreover, I did not have this problem prior to the formatting.

  • Determining Gapless Playback Information AGAIN!

My Itunes library is mobile. It is a copy of the always updating library on my home computer. For reasons that I don't need to explain, I carry my tunes on an external drive. When I'm at work, or on a laptop, or in Iraq, I have to add the folder to the Itunes on that computer. Now, whenever I do that I have to wait hours for Itunes to "Determine Gaplass Playback Information" Are you kidding me Itunes? I've tried to disable this. For God's sake please remove this feature from the next updated version. I've loved Itunes for years but this is enough to make me go back to Windows Media Player or ANYTHING else.

Presumably you are adding the tracks to your library when you change comuters, this will tigger gapless playback calulations.
Something you might consider is to keep your iTunes folder containing the library databases on the external drive.
You need to have an arrangemet as follows:
    x:\...\iTunes\iTunes Music.
If you do that you can run entirely from the external drive (apart from the iTunes program). After you plug the drive into one of your comuputers, start iTunes with the shift key held down and keep it down until you are prompted to choose a library. Navigate to the iTunes folder on the external drive and choose iTunes Library.itl.
To start off, you will need iTunes setup on the internal drive of one of your PCs with a standard arrangement - iTunes\iTunes Music - and with the library consolidated i.e all music files in the iTunes Music folder. Then, with iTunes closed, copy the iTunes folder with sub folders to the external drive and try the shift key startup thing.
p.s. the shift key start is only necessary the first time you start iTunes with the external drive plugged in. Itune will remember the library location once set, unless you start iTunes with the drive unplugged.

  • How to turn off "determing gapless playback information" feature?

it continually locks up itunes and forces me to CTRLALTDelete itunes. i notice that this "feature" starts itself again sometime even after i've stopped it. grrr. anyone know how i can disable it?

You may want to try SET DEFINE OFF
    - CJ
(Note to old timers : SET SCAN has been listed in the obsolete command section of the manual for a very long time - avoid using it in case it disappears!)

  • Ipod 4th gen! - stuck determing gapless playback info.-  why?

After several restores trying to get my ipod 4th gen. click wheel going (after installing iTunes 7 and the ipod becoming extremely buggy afterwards...) running diagnostic tests, etc., it turns out that the problem seems to be that every time I plug the ipod into my computer iTunes 7 tells me its "determing gapless playback information" which takes forever.
Of course, I thought that this gapless feature was only for newer iPod models so I'm puzzled why iTunes is doing this for my older model? Also it seems to have broken the playback when using the iPod - playback drops out in the middle of songs for instance.
I've now installed Linux on my iPod and Podzilla is playing back my files just fine, when I try with Apple's software - totally broken and disappointing.
Anybody know what's up? Are we waiting for Apple to release a fix for this? Why is my 4th Gen. apparently attempting the gapless playback?

his is not operating system-specific, but I want to get it on the record somewhere since I could not find the solution anywhere else.
Last week, my third-generation 30GB iPod refused to go beyond the Apple logo on startup. It would power up, flash as if trying to go to the menu, but instead it would just show the Apple again. I tried all the usual recovery methods: resetting (hundreds of times and a couple of different ways), disk scans from the diagnostic menu, restoring with the latest iPod software and with an older version, fsck, using Disk Utility to repair and erase, Disk Warrior, letting the battery drain, everything.
Nothing worked ... until I used Disk Utility to reformat the disk with the "Zero Out Data" option (in the Security pop-up) enabled. This, apparently, reformatted the drive in such a way as to account for bad sectors. It took about an hour.
After that, I restored it with the latest iPod software, and to my delight, it booted normally. It now works fine.
Found that on web mite help you.... but i dont have a mac

  • Determing Gapless Playback Crash

I recently reformatted my hard drive, reinstalled iTunes and loaded all my music from my external HD. iTunes added all the music but freezes when it gets to certain songs while "determing gapless playback." I tried deleting the song that was causing it to freeze but that only helped until it got through about 10 songs and then got stuck again. When it freezes, I can't do anything with iTunes and have to shut it down in the task manager. I tried letting it run it's course but nothing changed after a couple hours. I can use iTunes if I get to the little "x" at the top quick enough, but that's a pain. What do I do?

I'm going to echo the complaint and add the gory details of my efforts to this thread. Then I'm going to post feedback to Apple -- iTunes(7.6.0.29) + Vista renders both software and hardware UNUSABLE.
Objective: transfer library from old machine (SRC) to new laptop (TGT) with music folder on USB hard drive
    SRC: 1.8GHz P3 desktop, Windows 2000 Pro SP4, 384MB memory, 40GB disk, iTunes 7.3.2.6

iTunes 2771 song library -- 12 purchased from Apple (under 2 different accounts), remainder ALL created as LAME 3.96 VBR -V2 (approx 192 kbps) using dBpoweramp Music Converter and manually added to iTunes music folder on SRC (before transfer)
    Conversion Process
    -- Export library on SRC
-- Modify Library.xml, change all "\C:\Tunes" to "\F:\Tunes" (letter assigned to USB drive determined in advance)
-- Copy music folder from SRC (C:\Tunes\.) to USB drive (\Tunes)

-- Authorize TGT computer (2 accounts) on Apple Store
-- Connect iPod to TGT and "Transfer Purchases"
-- Connect USB drive to TGT
    -- Import Library.xml file
-- "Determine Gapless Playback Information" (DGPI) begins after import completes, process FAILS and LOCKS iTunes
-- USB drive shows 2 seconds of activity every 60 seconds, indefinitely, but iTunes shows no sign of progress or activity
-- iTunes must be terminated via task manager
-- DGPI repeatedly failed on song from Aerosmith's Greatest album (418 of 2581)
-- Terminate iTunes, disconnect USB drive, restart iTunes
-- Deleted problematic song, reconnect USB drive

-- Terminate iTunes, disconnect USB drive, restart iTunes, delete second problematic song, reconnect USB drive
-- DGPI fails on THIRD song from SAME Aerosmith album
-- Terminate iTunes, restart and delete all remaining songs from Aerosmith album
-- Reconnect USB drive, DGPI fails on song from Beatles Abbey Road (673 of 2531)

  • Help ! ITunes crashes everytime on gapless playback information

Please, i don't know what to to. Everytime I open Itunes it says gapless playback information and goes on forever, it won't let me import a cd . It just crashes. It's version 7 the latest one. It didn't happen before until the upgrade
how can i stop that gapless playback information from apperaing everytime??
      Windows XP

    Hey, guess what...I fixed it!
It appears to be that when iTunes updated to the 7.1 version, you needed the newest version of quicktime to be running and fully installed.
For example. I had the K-Lite Mega Codec pack, which in it contains a quick time alternative codec which allows you to watch .mov or quicktime movies without having quicktime actually installed on your computer.
So I completely removed the K-Lite Mega Codec pack and rebooted, then completely installed iTunes 7.1 + quicktime, and then rebooted again to be safe. And it worked. I also installed the K-Lite Mega Codec pack later and excluded the quicktime alternative.
But if you dont have the K-Lite Mega Codec pack on your computer I suggest uninstalling quicktime, and reinstalling it, then install iTunes 7.1 all over again.
Does this help you? If you have anymore questions just ask sophie.
    Best wishes,
    Oakie

  • ITunes 11.1.3 did not solve "Determining Gapless Playback Information" bug

The solutions here on forum are outdated (as "Get Info" – "Information" – uncheck "Part of gapless album") because we no longer have this feature, described here: http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1797?viewlocale=en_US&locale=en_US
I'm a little worried about that bug because it grows every music added (+1000 musics at this time for me).
What I already tested on Lion (and with no success):
    • "Get Info" music – "Options" – check "Skip when shuffling"
    • "File" – "Create new version" – "Create AAC version"
    • "Consolidate library" when album/musics selected
    • Remove album and put it again
I can only stop this bug pressing "x" on iTunes display. But the list is growing.
    Do you have any tip?

    FINALLY!! THE SOLUTION:
    1. Close iTunes.
    2. Move the selected files at username/music/itunes to your desktop:
    3. Run iTunes. iTunes will start as if it was the first time. All your preferences, musics, books, apps will not appear at this time (do not worry). If you find any problem just put all files that you move to your desktop again on username/music/itunes
    4. Click on 'Files' and select 'Library' and 'Import Library'. Choose: iTunes Library.xml at your desktop. (you can say "But this library was a mess!" Do not worry, iTunes will fix it).
    5. iTunes will import data from that file. For me it spends 5-10 minutes depend on the size of your library (my library has 50gb with 10.000 musics).
    6. After that you will see the annoying message on iTunes display: "Determining Gapless Playback Information" and much more musics than before (do not worry, it will be the last time that you will see it).
    7. iTunes will do that and it is done. No more bugs.
    8. Now you say: "Where is my apps, books, movies etc.?" Do not worry. Just move the folder at 'Itunes Media' (see image above) to iTunes, I mean, move folder "Books" to iTunes on 'Books'; move 'Home Video' folder to iTunes Movie; move 'Mobile Applications' to iTunes applications.
    9. Close iTunes. Run it. Smile!
    Considerations:
    a. consider all your library is indexed, it means, all your music is organized at username/music/itunes/itunes media/music
    b. consider you have to select again visualization mode for every music list.
Tested and works on iTunes 11.3.1 and Lion

  • Determining Gapless Playback Information Repeats Unexpectedly

I allowed the original Gapless Playback scan to complete on all songs in my library (just 5K songs, but a slow PC). However, some songs are scanned again every time I start iTunes AND every time I sync my iPod and sometimes randomly (like when I download a new iPod Touch App). I normally allow the process to complete (again) every time. When it occurs during an iPod sync, is causes the sync to hesitate at the end of the process, apparently waiting for iTunes to finish the Gapless Playback scan. This is infuriating!
While I can cancel the Gapless Playback scan, doing so does not prevent iTunes from performing the Gapless Playback scan again the next time I start iTunes or sync my iPod! Sometimes when I cancel the Gapless Playback scan during an iPod sync, my iPod will show NO MEDIA after disconnecting it when iTunes tells me it is OK to Disconnect! This forces me to sync the iPod AGAIN, which causes YET ANOTHER Gapless Playback scan on the SAME songs! Naturally, I allow the process to complete, which solves NOTHING.
    WHAT I'VE TRIED:
    1) I have attempted to play with the "Part of a gapless album" setting on the affected songs to no avail (set to On, Apply, then Off, Apply).
    2) I have dumped my iTunes library and created an entirely new one from scratch (holding the Shift key when starting iTunes to create a new library in a new location).
    3) I have completely uninstalled and reinstalled iTunes.
    4) I have tried this on another computer and found that I experience the exact same problem on exactly the same songs on both Windows Vista Ultimate 32-bit and Windows XP Professional 32-bit.
    5) I have submitted feedback to Apple (nearly an exact copy of the first 2 paragraphs you see above).
Note that I cannot re-rip these songs because I received them as part of a bonus package for a Sony PlayStation 3 video game (God of War 3, Collector's Edition). The MP3 files I have of these songs are the only ones I'll ever have access to. Also note that there is nothing obviously wrong with the song files because they play fine and all metadata appears to be valid.
How do I instruct iTunes to forever ignore Gapless Playback Information on these troubled songs, to NEVER scan them again, while keeping them in my iTunes library? Thank you for your attention on this matter.
    null

I know this is filed under iTunes for Windows, but I found this discussion whilst Googling for a solution to this exact problem under OSX 10.5.8, so I just thought I'd add my name to the list of people who are suffering!
Running OS X 10.5.8 with iTunes 9.1.1 (12) and a 160GB iPod classic. My iTunes library recently exceeded the capacity of my iPod, so I thought I would experiment with the converting higher bitrate files to 128kbps AAC option. Naively, I thought this would only address lossless files, as the idea of re-encoding a lossy file seemed a little silly to me - but no, even VBR MP3 with an avrage bitrate of not much over 128kbps got re-encoded. During the process (which was painfully slow - disk activity was at around 1.5MB/s for the entire duration) many of these suffered from Unknown Error (-50) and simply would not convert. All in all it took me 72 hours to convert my library on a 2.4ghz machine with 4gig of ram
I guess the above doesn't really pertain to this thread, so just consider it backstory However, now that the transfer has been completed, every time I update my iPod, for example when I plug it in to charge and it syncs a couple of new podcasts, it determines gapless playback information for 11,000 songs in my library! Every time!! I can't begin to describe how frustrating this is, and I can only hope they come up with a cross-platform fix in the very near future. I doubt personally we'll even see the issue officially acknowledged, but hopefully Apple are at least working on addressing it.
As a side note - Apple, if you are reading this, please allow us to only re-encode specific types of files to 128kbps AAC - I'd love to do this for my lossless albums, but I really don't want to do it for my V0 MP3s.

  • Everytime iTunes starts with "Determining Gapless Playback Information"!?

    Hi,
for 7 weeks now everytime I start iTunes (12.1.0.71) it keeps saying "Determining Gapless Playback Information" and does it with the last 189 mp3-files I imported. The files are always the same, it does not happen to any other, older mp3-files and it does not happen to new m4a-files. I found some ideas in forums but all of the suggestions are outdated because iTunes 12.1.0.71 does not have the options mentioned anymore....
    Any ideas?

    Welcome to AD!
I'm not sure this will work, but it's what I would try on my PC.
I would rename the folders containing those new music albums to something else. Then itunes will not be able to find them, so should skip the determining gapless info for them.
Specifically, use Windows Explorer to rename the folder they are in from "Artist A" to "Artist A re-do"
I would also check to see if another player such as WMP could play them. They might be damaged files.

  • Gapless playback information...? waht?

Okay. Every single time I open iTunes, I get thing thing at the top saying that iTunes is "Determining Gapless Playback Information" for 4 songs that are not in my library. I know this for certain. How on Earth to do I stop this. It is quite annoying.
Also, my iPod Classic decided that it did not want to sync with the new iTunes 10 and I can't figure that out either. It is quite frustrating. I know that the iPod is okay, it just doesn't want to sync or something.
Any help would be much appreciated.
