Determining Academic Version of FCE HD 3.0

Hello/ Bonjour,
First I want to compliment you on this informative forum.
After reading through about 30 pages of posts with answers, I have learned that the copy of FCE HD (ver. 3.0) that I found “un-opened” at my school will not work on my one-year-old 24-inch iMac (2.66 GhZ Intel Core 2 Duo; 4GB 1067 MHz DDR3), which is running Snow Leopard (10.6.3). So I plan to purchase FCE 4.
Here are my questions:
How can I determine whether or not this is an academic version with not upgrade path or a full commercial version for which I can purchase the upgrade to FCE 4? (The install DVD is labeled Final Cut Express HD Install: Version 3.0; and the labels with serial numbers at the bottom of the “Installing Your Software” pamphlet say FINAL CUT EXPRESS HD RETAIL).
Will I be able to use the 2 LiveType Data discs from this older version with the newer version of LiveType that will come with FCE 4?
Since the iMac has only one Firewire port, which will be in use to capture video from my Canon GL2, what will be my best strategy for managing projects; archived content; and my scratch disk needs? I was hoping to keep everything on an external drive, but this will need to be a USB drive. I have about 520 GB available on my 640 GB drive.
Thanks in advance.

The academic should have a label on the box (same for Non For Resale version-NFR).

Yes. Run the livetype install from the FCE 3.0 disk. The current LT app is the same as this one and you'll get the full content.

You can run FCE and capture on the internal but it's far better to use a dedicated external for video storage. You can daisychain the camcorder to the firewire on the external. Some Canon cameras have problem with daisychaining. If, so, capture on the internal and move capture files to the external.
Thanks in advance.

  • Academic version 3 question

how many times can you install the academic version of fcp 3 with the same serial numbers. its not working now and i think it may be because its been installed to the max. anyone know?

I would suggest you call the Applestore and order FCP 5.1. When three was written, os10 didn't even have a big cat name yet. I've been told that there are problems with it and 10.4.8
You should be aware that multiple installs on different machines is very illegal and apple can fall all over you if it wants to. Posting such info on Apple's website is just plain stupid. But hey, whatever.

  • Is it possible to upgrade from an Academic version of Logic 7.1?

I just purchased a new mac 8-core, went on installing Logic studio upgrade, but when it asks for the xskey it says 'this xskey is not elegible, please see upgrade requirements'. i've been using that key for many years and I don't understand whuy it's not working...Could anyone help me, please? I can't even find a support mail where to send my question to...

If it's an academic version, or a not-for-resale version, then these are not upgradable - ie, to move to the next full version of Logic, you can't just buy the upgrade, you have to buy the full version.
It's common knowledge that Academic versions of Apple's ProApps are not upgradable.
    If in doubt, contact Apple.

  • Final Cut Studio 2 (Academic Version)

I am a teacher and we have ordered and received 4 Final Cut Studio 2 packages. It came to us as the academic version. I know you cannot get upgrade to future Final Cut Studio packages, but is that the only difference?
Does it have all of the other features that regular Final Cut Studio has?
    Thanks in Advance

I do not have any experience with Final Cut, but if you have existing projects that you MUST access; then you are in need of a solution on your new iMac in Mountain Lion!
Unfortunately you got caught up in the minor miracle of Rosetta.  Originally licensed by Apple when it migrated from the PowerPC CPU platform that it had used from the mid-1990's until the Intel CPU platform in 2006, Rosetta allowed Mac users to continue to use their library of PPC software transparently in emulation.
However, Apple's license to continue to use this technology expired with new releases of OS X commencing with Lion (and now Mountain Lion).  While educational efforts have been made over the last 6 years, the fact is that Rosetta was SO successful that many users were caught unaware UNTIL they upgraded to Lion or Mountain Lion.
    Workarounds:
    1.  Purchase a used Mac that will run Snow Leopard (with the optional Rosetta installed) and continue to run FCE on that Mac (you can actually use Screen Sharing with a "headless" used Snow Leopard Mac Mini and use the 27" screen from your iMac to view and work FCE in the Mac Mini environment);
    2.  Upgrade to an Intel compatible version of FCE and hope it converts your existing projects to its newer format correctly.  There is much debate that the newer version of Final Cut are eliminating many needed features; for example Final Cut Pro X vs. Final Cut Pro 6 -- many users are staying with version 6;
    3.  Install Snow Leopard (with Rosetta) into Parallels and then install FCE in the Snow Leopard environment:
Full Snow Leopard installation instructions here:
    http://forums.macrumors.com/showthread.php?t=1365439
NOTE: STEP ONE of the instructions must currently be completed on a Snow Leopard or Lion Mac and the resulting modified Snow Leopard.cdr install file can then be moved over to your Mountain Lion Mac for completion of the remaining steps.
NOTE 2:  Computer games with complex, 3D or fast motion graphics make not work well or at all in virtualization.

  • I'm trying to upgrade 9.0 academic version to 9.1.7 to use on a new MacBook pro.  When I try to do incremental upgrades to 9.0.1 or 9.0. it says I don't need them.  When I try to upgrade to 9.1.7 it says there is no version eligible to upgrade.

I'm trying to upgrade Logoc Pro 9.0 academic version to 9.1.7 to use on a new MacBook pro.  When I try to do incremental upgrades to 9.0.1 or 9.0.2 it says I don't need them.  When I try to upgrade to 9.1.7 it says there is no version eligible to upgrade. This all on the older MacBook currentlu running 9.0.  But I need to upgrade to 9.1.7 to transfer it over tp the new MacBook w/ Retina display.

I think I just got it.  I had the actual Logic Pro.app in a folder called Logic Pro inside the applications folder.  When I moved the actual app out of the folder and into applications it worked.  I am in the process of updating now.  However it seems a little strange because that's how it installed from the discs - into a folder named Logic Pro within the applications folder.  I would never have figured that out on my own.  So thanks for those who posted solutions to other users similar requests.

  • How do I install Photoshop 6 on MacBook (Windows & Academic version)

I have been attempting to install Adobe Photoshop 6, made for Windows and academic version. The Mac system always asks me "which application to open this stuff with?" I don't really have an answer to that question. I've discovered a mysterious and cranky program named Disk Utility, in Applications/Utilities. I just am so ignorant about this. (I am a new Mac user, and a multi-media student and artist). A big reason why I bought this laptop, was so that I could do much artistic and photographic work with this thing! I've seen these things called "DMG" files. What the heck is that? Very frustrated! Any help from a knowledgeable Mac person, (knowing Adobe would be a plus!) would be VASTLY appreciated

You need to buy a Mac-Version off Adobe Photoshop!
    http://www.adobe.com/products/adobesupportsOSX.html
Maybe you might also consider to start using a newer version off Photoshop!
It is not possible to run Windows applications on a Mac and vise versa!
The .dmg files are image files! Just like a .iso file on a PC. Most of the applications are packaged in these images. By double clinking on them OSX will mount them on your desktop. Then you can drag-and-drop the application to the Application folder on the Macintosh HD to install them. After installing you can unmount the image and delete the .dmg file. You can see them like virtual installation disk's! Disk Utility is just the application which handles the mounting and unmounting off the .dmg file's!
Hopefully this is helpfull or solved your problem. Consider rewarding some points!

  • Academic Version of Aperature

I ran the check up for upgrading Aperture 1.5 to 2.0 and computer passed so I went to Apple store and bought update. When I went to install my 1.5 serial number came back as invalid. I then realized I had the academic version. When I looked at email receipt from store it says no open box returns. I feel they are obligated to take return since their software check said ok. Nothing on box indicated you could not update from academic version. Earlier I had checked education site and there is no special academic price on 2.0. Am I stuck?
I really think since I bought my aperture last year there should be disclaimers or warnings on web site and spelled out specifically in what you need to upgrade. Is Apple getting like Adobe and rest of PC world? I now have converted from PC world and have 2 Macs. Maybe I made a mistake.
Should I abandon Aperture now and stay with Light room. Spend another 100 dollars if Apple takes back upgrade and buy full version or spend $200 to get CS3 for the mac (have PC version)?
This situation is just down right tacky!!

I had the same problem today; bought the Academic (for $250 in Jan. '06), and tried to install the 2.0 upgrade, and we stopped when I entered my original serial number.
Call to tech support today gave result that Academic 1.x isn't eligible for upgrade, must now buy full version. Called sales dept. to return the 2.0 Upgrade version, explained situation, and asked for some consideration - which was given in the form of $50 off the full version.
End result for me is I received $50 off 1.0 (when I was honestly eligible to buy Academic), and paid $150 for 2.0; I'm happy enough. Life's too short to rant about this kind of stuff; it's cool product.
It is messed up that a college student could buy 1.0 for $250 in Jan. 2006 and (if they wanted to) but had graduated would have to buy 2.0 for $200, ($450 total), but would get full 1.0 in Jan. '06 for $300 plus 2.0 upgrade now for $100, a $50 overall savings.

Seems that you have to update Logic to the latest version (9.0.15) to get it to work in Lion.

  • Any timecode window plug-ins for older versions of FCE?

Hey - thanks in advance for any help on this.
I use FCE version 1 on a G4 running OSX 2.9. The most commonly recommended Free timecode plugin doesn't seem to work in my version. I install it, but it's not visible in the bins where it's supposed to show up. I tried saving it as a unix and/or unicode and all that other gobbly gook that you're supposed to try if it doesn't install properly. Anyhow, none of that helped. I can only assume it's because of my earlier version of FCE or my OSX.
I need a timecode window visible on my finished project because I'm sending to a closed captioning place. Thanks again.

Wow - I had no idea my question would be such a great source of joy for those of you who enjoy making yourselves feel better by putting other people down. I'm glad I could help.
For anyone else who is actually interested in helping and can refrain from insulting me, I'm still eagerly awaiting some friendly, HELPFUL, advice.
And for the rest of you, by the way - I am a professional and as professionals know, you don't have to rely on the latest and greatest technology to get great results (if you're any good, that is). I humbly called myself a struggling artist, but my resume would put you to shame, so please, no more childish remarks.

  • How do I determine which version of windows os is installed on the computer that my application is running on.

I need to determine which version of windows os in on the computer running my application to make some minor adjustments to a subvi.  Is there a programmatic way to determine this using Labview.

Or, use the Application property node Application>OS>Detailed Name.  Although I can't say anything about its output on other-than-Windows OSes.

  • How do I determine what version of Firefox I have and where do I go for updates/

Yahoo is 'suggesting' I upgrade to Firefox''' 8'''. How do I determine which version I currently have (there is not 'Internet Options' under Tools) and where to I go to find the updates withough depending on Yahoo?

    Hey kkwebb,
There is a KB article called [[Updating Firefox]] that should have all the info you are looking for. You can find out what version of FF you are currently using by going to the Help menu at the top left of Firefox, then choosing "About Firefox." That will not only tell you what version you are using, but it will also let you know if there is an available upgrade.
    Hopefully this helps!

  • How do I determine what version of CUPS I have?

I have been using Gimp-Print and am now upgrading to Gutenprint which requires cups 1.1.15 or newer. How do I find out which I have? I am running 10.2.8.

    Greg is correct.
    Jaguar used version 1.1.15
    Panther used version 1.1.20
    Tiger uses version 1.1.23
You can determine your version in several ways. The geeky way to find out is to use the Terminal and use the command:
    cups-config --version
The easier way is to click on this link. This will display the CUPS web interface from your own computer. The CUPS version will be in the title bar for the web page.
