Determining best image overlay size to use

Hi folks
So I'm working with Premiere Pro CS6 doing some video editing for a minister friend of mine. During bits of the video, I've been overlaying quotes and whatnot. I'd like to achieve some consistency by always ensuring these appear in the same screen location. So I thought one easy way to accomplish it would be to determine the pixel size of the sequence. And the properties report back that my sequence is 1440 x 1080. I figured I could just create and manipulate images of that exact size and drop them in for exact placement.
The problem is that when I create an image of that size and drop it into PP, the right monitor shows the image with pillarboxed areas of the video on either side of it. The image certainly appears to be spot on with height, but the width is off and I'm not sure why?
So what's the explanation here? It would certainly seem the sequence properties are in conflict with what the right monitor area in PP is presenting.
Thanks... Rick

You can specify the PAR of titles as you create them:
Basically, anamorphic HD uses rectangular pixels
in order to squish the 16x9 image into a 4x3 frame.
Premiere 'un-squishes' the pixels back to 16x9.
If your source footage is 1440x1080 (1.333),
you are correct working in a 1440x1080 (1.333) Sequence...
you just need to create matching aspect / par titles.
If you are using another application to create your .png images,
I would be inclined to make them 1920x1080 (1.0).
This will fit your anamorphic Sequence without worrying about PAR.

  • Motion moving slow, best image sizes?

    I am brand new to this so forgive me if this is stupid.
    Is there an optimum image still size to use in motion drop zones? I am
    using one of the default templates, and was dragging pictures in that were taken with my sony sr12, they are 1.9 MB and 3680x2760, pretty big, so I went to photoshop and sized them down 40%, but still it is slow and jaggy when playing in motion.
    Will it look better when complete and exported, or should the pics be smaller?
    THank you!

    You'll have to redraw everything each time you reposition the cursor.
    Your best bet to speed things up (and look nice) are:
    1. Use double buffering
    2. Redraw only over the area where the cursor needs to first be erased (ie might only be a 30x30 area). You can achieve this by setting the clipping area of the pictures drawn.

  • Help!  Image Overlay problems in FCP

    I am working on a web video project in FCP 7.0.2 that is working with both video and images. I need a watermark overlay in the bottom right corner for the duration as well as various image overlays and I use moving images as transition between scenes. Whenever I lay an image on top of video, the video speeds up. Audio stays in real time but the video gets really fast. Whenever I try to use an image as a transition, during the transition and soon after it's completion, the screens flashes black.
    I recently completed a project that is the exact same as this one in regards to settings and images and had none of these problems. Any idea what the issue is?

    Sorry for being vague. I think I solved it. I used Amerisoft Video Converter to convert 1280 x 720 MTS files. With the original project, I made mp4's with the convertor. With the newer project, they are all .MOV's and they aren't getting along with my previous sequence settings. I am re-exporting them.
    The transition isn't a pre-programed transition. I take a .PNG and set a motion tween in the motion tab and have it slide across as a transition from one scene to another. It's just a moving image file. I also have a logo overlayed on the bottom right corner. Knowing all of that, can you think of why the image files weren't getting along with the .MOV's and the sequence?

  • What is the best image size format for imovie iOS

    I want to create a few black images with white letters as title slides and use them with some of my videos I am creating using imovie with my new ipad3.
    What is the best image size?
    thanks!
    Jeremy

    It all depends on what you want to do with the images.
    If you don't want to do any moves on the images then make them the exact size of the video.
    The iPad 3 edits in full HD, 1920 x 1080.
    If you want to do small moves, then make is larger.
    But keep the 1920 x 1080 dimensions otherwise iMovie just chops the image to that ratio.
    good luck

  • Why are Image Export Sizes Doubled when using Save vs. SaveForWeb&Devices?

    Hi Folks
    Maybe I'm missing something here ...
    I have 2 versions of an action I use to batch process images. One uses the Save As dialogue and the other uses SaveForWeb&Devices. However, the image sizes created using the latter are about 50% smaller than those created with the former. The two actions differ only in the Save step - I duplicated the original and swapped the save step in the action.
    Is SaveForWeb&Devices usign a more efficient optimisation algorithm or am I missing something?
    The reason for using the Save As dialog is that Batch Processing is able to override the save location, whereas I had trouble overriding save location in a batch process which used an Action that Saved using SaveForWeb&Devices.
    Cheers
    Richard
    P.S. I also find this size doubling takes place when using the Image Processing script supplied with PS. I'm on PS5 on OSX10.6.8.

    SfW throws out redundant custom data, when the normal JPEG save does not. Using the normal save e.g. also retains clipping paths (10 years ago people used that al lthe time for print stuff) and of course also more info on color management, user metadata and what have you. Therfe may bne more specific optimizations in SfW, but that's something Mr. Cox can probably answer better...

  • What is the best high res image file format to use for print

    Dear All,
    I'm working on a 300 + page catalog, and I was wondering what would be the best image format to use on the catalog. I thought png was the best since it supports background transparency and all, but for some reason I'm not able to export it once I change the image to CMYK ( since I need CMYK for print ). Should I save all in eps. instead? Please help would be appreciated.
    thanks,
    Jack

    .psd is the best... supports everything you would want for print.  PDF does also, but takes a little more knowledge to use properly.
    .png is recommended when using Word etc.
    EPS is obsolete.

    Is there a way to see the size of my ICloud backup files, so I can determine which one I want to use?

    Go to Settings>iCloud>Storage & Backup>Manage Storage.  Your backups are listed at the top, along with their sizes.  Note: this will only list your most current backup.  You may have your previous two backups available too but you cannot access any size information about them.

    When trying to use a photo for wallpaper, cannot scale the image to size I want to use.  Feature worked fine in iOS6

    James, thank you. I'm experiencing the same issue and submitted feelback at that link. I'm trying to use the same pumpkin image I used last year for Halloween on my lock screen and attempting to follow instructions (Move and Scale) and would like to make the image smaller so that it appears BELOW the time and date, but although I'm able to move the image, I'm unable to scale it - make it smaller. I've since tried this with several other photos with the same outcome. It seems that in iOS 7 one can make images bigger, but not smaller. I'm not sure what the logic behind that could be.

    Hi All,
    I set a photo as my background on my X6, but the image re-sizes itself so its bigger in the home screen and not all of the image appears on the screen, alot is cut off.
    I cant quite figure out how to adjust the image so that it stays the same size when its used as my back ground, or how to re-adjust the image back! Its annoying because it means my pictures are limited as to what can be on my background, im having to chose really far away shots becaus they appear close up when used as a background!
    Help for the thicko much appreicated!!

    Transfer picture to computer and assuming you have windows, right click on it and select edit, when the screen opens in 'paint' select the re-size option , top left hand corner second section from the left when edit menu opens click the pixel option and type in the ratio of your phone screen (360x640), then close and save as jpeg, should then do exactly what you want

    I am a new mac user and I switch to mac due to the graphics that it brings. I do website in pc and I heard iweb is the best.NOW i heard that iweb will be discontinue. so what is the best application there for website using MAC OSX lion?

    It is now confirmed  that iWeb, and iDVD, has been discontinued by Apple. This is evidenced by the fact that new Macs are shipping with iLife 11 installed but without iWeb and iDVD.
    On June 30, 2012 MobileMe will be shutdown. However, iWeb will still continue to work but without the following:
    Features No Longer Available Once MobileMe is Discontinued:
    ◼ Password protection
    ◼ Blog and photo comments
    ◼ Blog search
    ◼ Hit counter
    ◼ MobileMe Gallery
    All of these features can be replaced with 3rd party options.
    I found that if I published my site to a folder on my hard drive and then uploaded with a 3rd party FTP client subscriptions to slideshows and the RSS feed were broken.  If I published directly from iWeb to the FPT server those two features continued to work correctly.
    There's another problem and that's with iWeb's popup slideshows.  Once the MMe servers are no longer online the popup slideshow buttons will not display their images.
    Click to view full size
    However, Roddy McKay and I have figured out a way to modify existing sites with those slideshows and iWeb itself so that those images will display as expected once MobileMe servers are gone.  How to is described in this tutorial: #26 - How to Modify iWeb So Popup Slideshows Will Work After MobileMe is Discontinued.
    It now appears that the iLife suite of applications offered on disc is now a discontinued product and the remaining supported iApps will only be available thru the App Store from now on. However, the iLife 11 boxed version that is still available at the online Apple Store (Store button at the top of the page) and those still on the shelves of retailers will include iWeb and iDVD. Those two apps were listed in small, gray text on the iLife 11 box that I bought.
    Personally, if I didn't already have a copy I would purchase one to have it for reinstallation purposes if ever needed.

  • How to embed image in html when using JTextPane, HTMLEditorKit, JavaMail

    I am developing a specialized e-mail client that has to be able to send e-mail messages (in html format with images and attachments) that can be read by standard e-mail clients, and receive similar messages from standard e-mail clients.
    I have everything working except for embedding images.
    Images are to appear in the document mixed in with the text, but that's not what I mean by "embed". By "embed" I mean that the image itself is encoded within the html.
    Here's a bit of code to set the context.
    JTextPane bodyPane = new JTextPane();
    bodyPane.setEditorKit(htmlEditorKit);
    bodyPane.setTransferHandler(new DropHandler());
    bodyPane.setDocument(new HTMLDocument());
    In the DropHandler I have the following:
    HTMLDocument htmlDoc = (HTMLDocument) bodyPane.getDocument();
    HTMLEditorKit htmlKit = (HTMLEditorKit) bodyPane.getEditorKit();
    int caretPos = bodyPane.getCaretPosition();
    At this point get "filename", the full path to an image file that has been dropped onto bodyPane.
    String htmlString = "<img src=\"file:///" + filename.replace("\\","/") + "\">";
    htmlKit.insertHTML(htmlDoc, caretPos, htmlString, 0, 0, HTML.Tag.IMG);
    This works just fine. The image is displayed in the document at the point of insertion.
    However, the image itself is an external file. I need to send an e-mail with this image and could send the image file as an attachment, but I obviously can't assume that the recipient of the email is going to save the attachment into the proper location.
    What is the best way to do this?
    There is a technique for embedding the actual image in the html, using this syntax:
    String htmlString = "<a href=\"data:image/png;base64,---mimed png image here--\" alt=\"Red dot\"></a>";
    I can't get this to work in JTextPane, so perhaps it's not supported. Also, there may be limitations on the size of an image. And apparently Internet Explorer doesn't support this.
    From what I read, using a "content identifier", that is, "cid:" and adding the image as another part of the e-mail message is probably the thing to do. I haven't taken the time to explore this yet.
    Does JTextPane support cid? Is that a nonsense question? I suspect what I need to do when the message is being composed is use absolute paths to local files with the images, and then when assembling the e-mail, attach the files and rewrite the html to build in the cid linkage. Similarly, when reading a message with cid's, the thing to do is save the body parts as files and rewrite the cid to point to the actual file.
    I have seen others ask similar questions, one as recently as last December, and the reply was to refer to a Sun tutorial. But that tutorial doesn't address the full problem of 1) inserting an image into a document (instead of attaching an image to a component) and 2) sending it as an e-mail message.
    I have yet to see an example that shows the complete package.
    Am I right that the data option I mentioned is not going to work?
    Am I right that cid is the best approach, and do I understand how to use it?
    Is there something else?
    Thanks
    John

    Hi Rocky,
    Are you using the DC?
    if yes then you need to put the image inside the component folder. after that close the application
    & reopen. You will get the image.
    In case this does not work then try refreshing the portal through server side. Once the cache is cleared, it will be up to view.
    Also check the Activity list you have created. It should be added to the dtr properly or else it wont be reflected once reimported the configurations.

  • How do you know the best iMac display size

    how do you know the best iMac display size
    Only on them fits in the screen window and that makes the font so tiny.  The others are too wide or too tall.  I usually view at 150 - 200% for vision issues.

    You say it's better to do the Media Browser?  I'm fairly new to movie, dvd and garage band.  How would I go about using the Media Browser instead of straight to iDVD?
    Select Your project - go up to Share - Share to Media Browser and as Large (Not HD)
    In iDVD select a nice theme - click on Media button - click on Movie - Select Your movie.
    NOW - Save as a DiskImage - and test this before burning DVDs - if this Plays OK then either burn the Image by using Disk Util tool (and set down burn-speed to x4) - or burn via iDVD (will take more time)
    I want to keep as much quality as I can.
    Then don't use iMovie'08 or 09 or 11 - as they all discard every second line resulting in less quality on the DVD. I use iMovie HD6 or FinalCut any version.
    Also...I tried to split my project in iMovie...but couldn't find a way.  I wound up just making a copy and then deleting out a handful of scenes from the copy...I still have the original at 4:12hrs.  Is there a way in iMovie to split a project?
    I would make a copy and cut away a bit from the end - calling this Part 1 and from start of the other copy Part 2.
    OR - there are other programs that can squees in more to a DVD e.g. Roxio Toast™ - BUT this has two cons.
    • It costs - to me it was well spent mony as it can so much more e.g. back engineer a DVD to an editable form
    • Squeesing in more on a DVD - costs in QUALITY - and as You want as much as it can be - then 90 minuts portions encoded with Pro-Quality encoding and full quality interlasced material from a video-editor that delivers this is the way to get 100% of what DVDs can do.
    DVD is as standard only SD-Video - HD not possibly. Then You need Blu-Ray. (also Roxio Toast™)

  • How determine best initial setup (resolution, etc.) for printing photo

    Have worked with older versions of photoshop, now working towards bettering overall skills, and using Photoshop CS4.   Would like to ask about how to setup an image initially, when first click File > New
    Typically will be "photoshopping" jpg images, from 12 mega-pixel camera, and want to print color photos at max resolution, at local photo printer.  Am using Windows 7 PC, 64bit (maybe not relevant?).  So question is… how do you know what to enter for settings.
    Example.  Working now on an image to print as a 16” x 20” photo, at whatever would be highest/best resolution.  But don't want to create a massive file with overkill resolution that far exceeds what the original picture has in it.  So, what would be best settings to fill in the blanks below?  Thanks for any quick/direct insights, plus any basic articles that cover this...
    File > New
    Preset:                   Custom
    Width:                    ___ in   (16?)
    Height:                   ___ in   (20?)
    Resolution              ___ pixels/inch
    Color Mode             ___
    Background Color   ___

    Before we get into the specifics, I want to ask "why" you're doing File - New to work on photos (opposed to just File - Open).
    Generally speaking, for doing photo or other editing you want to work at or higher than the pixel count you'll want to print at.  Even with inkjet printers, there are actually visible differences right up to about 600 ppi, though most folks feel 300 ppi is sufficient for a good print.  Somewhere on this forum I wrote up a post where I tested a highly detailed image printed at various ppi levels then examined the results critically with a loupe and took macro photos.
    My recommendations / opinions:
    I suggest rather than trying to manage ppi early in the process that instead you think in pixels.  I've even changed my rulers to measure in Pixels by default, so my File - New menu shows me the pixel counts.  Think in pixels while editing, but keep in mind your ultimate use for the image.
    If you're just doing photo editing, and not trying, for example, to put together a collage or something, but looking to print one photo, here's a suggestion:
    1.  Open the image at the camera's native resolution or higher if your computer is powerful enough.  What I mean by this is if you open a raw file through Camera Raw, consider choosing one of the upsampled resolutions.  I open my Canon 40D files at 6144 x 4096 pixels, for example.
    2.  Do your photo editing at the pixel size at which you opened the image.  In other words, don't do things that resample it.
    3.  Only consider resampling to match the needs for output.  For example, if you're going to print the file, you may not need to resample at all - just let the printer driver do it and see how that works.  But if you're going to publish on the web, you will probably want to downsample the image.  But do this after you've saved your master file (if you're going to save a copy).  Consider the downsampling preparation for output.
    In your example, if I were prepping a photo for 16" x 20" output, I'd do this:
    1.  Open my raw file at 6144 x 4096 (the largest Camera Raw will emit)  x 16 bits/channel.  Some quick mental math says that the print ppi will work out to the vicinity of 300ish, which is good for an image that size.
    2. I'd set the Image size of the smaller side in the Image Size dialog to 16" height WITHOUT resampling.  The other side will show as 24", indicating the image will need to be cropped, I'd then crop to 20" on the longer side, again making sure not to resample.
    3.  I'd do my various editing steps without resampling, and sharpen near the end.  The order of steps 2 and 3 isn't really important.
    4.  I'd then do File - Print.
    The thing to do is if you're unsure of things, just try them and do test prints, and use your own judgment about what looks better.  Don't assume you HAVE to do things a certain way because of what others say.  You might just find a workflow that works for you and gives you dynamite results with your ways of working and your equipment and software.
    Good luck.
    -Noel

  • Image Byte size in "Save for Web"-Dialog is wrong?

    The Image Byte size in the finder is always larger than the size stated in Photoshop's "Save for Web"-Dialog box. For example, it shows me 34,36 KB in the SfW-Dialog, while the file information in Finder puts out "38,831 KB". Does anybody know how to fix this annoying behaviour?
    kind regards,
    tomasio

    The size reported in the Finder can be in base 1000 (lying numbers used by disk makers) instead of base 1024 (actual bytes) if you don't change the settings.
    The size reported in the Finder can include the resource fork (metadata and thumbnails, some added by the OS), plus some extra space for disk block allocations (if you write 1 byte to a file, it still takes 4k or more of disk space).
    The size given in SFW is a close estimate of the actual number of bytes written to the disk, and usually matches the size reported by FTP and the web server (sometimes the estimate is off by a little bit due to the final compression options chosen).
    But SFW cannot account for the oddities of the Finder or Windows Explorer's accounting of file size.

  • Batch processing with an image overlay

    Is it possible to do batch processing with an image overlay in FW CS4?
    I'm trying to resize several hundred images and place rounded corners on them.
    If this cannot be done in FW, does anyone know of another program that could accomplish this?

    Hi Marje,
    It's possible to include both resizing and image overlay in a custom Fireworks command that can be used in batch processing.  To get started, you could check out this tutorial that deals with the first step.
    That article describes how to perform image resize and overlay (in that case, a watermark), and then how to record the steps and turn them into a custom command that can be later used in batch processing.
    Once you saved the custom command, click File >> Batch Process, and follow the steps below:
    In the first window, select the images you want to process.
    On the next screen, open the Commands dropdown menu and select the custom command you created (it'll probably be on the bottom of the list), and click the Add button to include it in the batch process list.
    Finally, on the next screen select the location of the processed files, and optionally save the batch script for later use.
    Good luck!
