Determining database name as non-privileged user

Hi,
Could anyone tell me if there is a way to query and find the name of a database when you are logged in as a non-privileged user who does not have select on V$database or any other V$ or DBA views?
Thanks
user932579

As non privilege user you can't query DBA views
Try to use SYS_CONTEXT funcation
select sys_context('USERENV','DB_NAME') from dual;

  • Non-privileged user groups and examples of tasks

    Wiki says that normal, non-privileged users can and should be given membership in the following groups:
    audio - for tasks involving sound card and related software
    floppy - for access to a floppy if applicable
    lp - for managing printing tasks
    optical - for managing tasks pertaining to the optical drive(s)
    storage - for managing storage devices
    video - for video tasks and hardware acceleration
    wheel - for using sudo
    power - used w/ power options (e.g.: shutdown with power button)
    What I'm interested is the examples of the typical tasks (besides mentioned on Wiki) that require membership in these groups: storage, video, power, camera, games.
    If someone could break it down nicely I would be much obliged. Thank you.

    Storage allows you to (un)mount removable media as user in graphical file managers (when HAL is involved).
    Power allows you t resume/suspend/shutdown/reboot as user.
    Some games set the permissions on their executables so that a non-member of the games group can't start the game.
    For the others, I have no idea unfortunately. By the way, the groups are to be deprecated in the (rather far?) future since you are supposed to get proper permissions when you need them. I think ConsoleKit is involved in that IIRC.
    Thanks for a quick reply. That's an interesting idea to grant privileges dynamically on demand. Haven't heard of it yet. Where can I read about it more?

  • How to determine database name I am connected to ?

    I would like as simply and fast as possible to determine the database name, which I am currently connected to. Maybe the property jbo.sql92.JdbcDriverClass would do, but how to get its value ? Thanks for any suggestions.

    Ricky,
    don't understand that, why you don't use the session, when you are in BC4J (AM.getSession()) - which will give you at least the URL you connect too (in case you use a datasource - bad luck, as it is defined within the container ..)
    thx clemens

  • Database Access to Web Analysis Users

    Hi,
    I am working on a planning application on EPM 11.1.1.3. I have assigned access to users to the Web forms, business rules, dimension members etc. The access is properly applied to all users when they login to the planning application.
    However, none of the security filters are applicable to the Web Analysis reports when the same users login with their ID's in Web Analysis.
    1. For example, the user can see all members in the 'Entity' dimension drop-down box in the report. What can I do to apply dimension member access to the reports also?
    2. Secondly, when a non-admin user opens a web analysis report, it prompts for a username and password to connect to the database. Only when I specify the admin username and password, the user can view the data. If I enter the user's own username and password, no data is displayed on the report. Can anybody guide me as to how I should allow database access to non-admin users.
    Any help would be much appreciated.
    Cheers,
    Sahil

    1. While users see all dimension members under Entity, do they see the data for them?
    - one way to reduce the amount of members users see is to use Meta-read filters - although meta-read filters cannot be used with write filters.
    2. Normally when users open up a WA report, the report defaults to the highest level - so total entity.
    - one way to have users see their data is to use User POV - although this requires users to set up their POV per data source under preferences (but only once).
    Hope this helps, cheers, Iain

  • How to find old mailbox database name

    Hi,<o:p></o:p>
    We are using Exchange server 2007, we recently moved one user from one database to another database. But we didn't notice source database name while
    we move. After a week time user asking us to restore one month old data but now we didn't know were user was there earlier before moved to new database. Is there any way to find old mailbox database name for the particular user?<o:p></o:p>
    Your help is really appreciated. Thanks<o:p></o:p>

    Try this friend:
    Option1:
    get-mailbox [email protected] | Get-MailboxStatistics -IncludeMoveHistory | ft DisplayName, MoveHistory
    Option2:
    If you have trouble use below to generate in csv to get old DB status of user:
    $temp=Get-MailboxStatistics -Identity AylaKol -IncludeMoveReport
    $temp.MoveHistory[0] | Export-CSV C:\MoveReport_AylaKol.csv
    Option 3:
    C:\>(Get-MailboxStatistics alan.reid -IncludeMoveHistory).MoveHistory | select CompletionTimestamp,SourceDatabase,TargetDatabase | ft -auto

  • How to set "administration" privileges to a non-oracle user

    Hi, I like to know if exist any paper or best practice to set administation privileges to a non-oracle user.
    Where I work, I've the oracle user and I can run any administration task, but I want, for example, that any developer can deploy a war in the "developer environment", whatever I wan't they can change opmn.xml setting or touch another instance in the same server.
    I 've looking in this forum and another sources but not found anything.
    Really Thanks

    We are using iAS v9.0.4 on AIX 5L (64 bits).
    Isn't there a way for automatically deploy ears, just by putting them on a specific disk directory ?
    Thanx

  • Allowing non-admin users partial admin privileges

    Hi All
    I manage a number of Macs on a large corporate (PC-centric) network. Organisation policy prohibits giving users admin privileges. However, I want users to be able to do some admin tasks like installing software, but not to have admin privileges per se. The Parental Controls option for non-admin accounts does not offer sufficient functionality.
    All the Macs are stand alone (not managed accounts), and are accessible via Apple Remote desktop. Few of the Mac users are command line savvy, so any solution has to be invisible, or via a simple gui.
    Thanks in advance
    Dave Mitchelll

    Most software does not need to be in the Applications folder to run. Non-admin users can install most drag-and-drop software right inside their home folders and run the apps from there.

  • Giving Non-Admin User Admin Privileges to One Program

    Are erratic?
    I'm assuming the updates happen with such frequency that requiring IT to install them is a major hassle. Your other option is to find a way to script the install and push it to the required workstations.

    I thought I would come to the community and ask if there is any way to give a non-admin user admin rights to one program so that he can run updates.  I looked into making an elevated shortcut which worked to no avail.  Unfortunately updates don't erratic on when they come out.  Was just curious if there is an ability to give the user who is having problems admin privileges to this program without an admin password.

  • Non root user can delete root files, bug?

    We're having an odd permissions based problem on Solaris 10 u5 x86_64, (new install, fully patched as of 2 days ago) It means that non root users can delete root owned files, which is something I've never seen before, and I've been doing this for almost 10 years.
    We're installing into an 80Gb container on VMware ESX server 3.0.1. It's a new "bare metal" (in as much as there is no metal) install. I created the sybase user from scratch by hand editing passwd, group and shadow, buy copying and pasting the data out of the NIS maps. All I've done besides the install & patch is setup networking manually, and created the metadb's and the soft partitions and the mount points & newfs'ed & mounted three of them . I then changed ownership of /apps to be sybase:sybase, and handed it to the database team for the sybase install. they came back and said "should we be able to do this?" as they habitually run rm rf * knowing they can't delete root owned files, only now they can... This is true even if I just chgrp the directory and give them group write permissions. They can still delete anything owned by root, even if it doesn't have group permissions just like the lost+found directory. No other "real" machine we have, x86 or SPARC does this, but we've never installed u5 before either.
    As you can imagine losing the lost+found directory is a bit of a problem, however what's really worrying me is if they can do that, what happens when they run sybase as the sybase user? If it borks can they trash the OS and write/overwrite random files?
    It's a VM, so in as much that's not a problem, but the reason it's a VM is somebody wants to send a VM to a client as a demo, and at present it's highly unstable IMO.
    Does anyone have any idea where to start? My thoughts are that it may be a VMware issue, (though the hardware and the guest OS is supported) it could be a bug, because I've never seen that weird newfs error before, and then I found this:
    http://bugs.opensolaris.org/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=6622243
    Or it could be me, and the fact that I'm hand configuring it, and u5 now requires I do it "properly" with useradd, etc. I'd like to test, but the guy wants it built, and wants it now, so I patched it up, and gave it back to the database team and told them to be careful.
    I'd be interested in you opinions regardless.
    The full spec of the "machine" is below, sol10 is not it's name for obvious reasons, and I've hashed out the ID & GIUD for similar reasons.

    An easy way to think of it is this -- everything in Unix is a file. Including directories; they are just a file which contains a list of the files in that directory, and pointers to them.
    If the 'sybase' user has write permission on the directory, they have permission to edit that "list", and can add or remove files to the list. It doesn't matter who the files on the list belong to, because the files are not what is being modified. Only the list of files is being modified. (Of course, in Unix, if you erase the file's listing from all of the lists it's on, the file itself goes away for housekeeping purposes.)
    One thing that would have stopped the 'sybase' user from removing the lost+found directory is if that directory itself had files in it -- without write permission to the lost+found directory, that user could not have removed those files, and since one cannot remove a non-empty directory, that operation would have failed. Since lost+found was empty in this case, it could be removed simply by having permission to write to the /apps directory.
    This behavior does change if you set the sticky bit on the directory -- in that case, files may only be removed by the owner of the file or directory, or if the user has write permission to the file. This would have prevented the sybase user from removing the lost+found directory. (Note, this also applies to the 'rename' function call.) This would probably be the best way to handle your situation, since you apparently do want the sybase user to be able to add files to /apps, but do not want them to be able to remove lost+found.

  • SQL tab not working in V2.1 EA1 for non-DBA users -- how to fix?

    In v2.1 EA 1 the tab to show the SQL script (DDL) in the object browser is not working for non-DBA users. In the prior version, these users would see a message about DBMS_METADATA and then the message would indicate that an "internal generator" would be used to generate the DDL script. After that brief message the DDL would show up as expected. This doesn't seem to be the case in the newest version.
    I issued the following two grants to a particular user which worked, but I am reluctant to issue the grants to "PUBLIC".
    SQL> grant execute on DBMS_METADATA to XXXXX;
    SQL> grant select_catalog_role to XXXXX;
    So, my questions are:
    1) Will the old functionality (that didn't require these privileges) be added to V2 at some point?
    2) What security implications are there for issueing the above grants to PUBLIC?
    NOTE: After granting execute on the DBMS_METADATA package, it still didn't work. I left that grant in place and granted SELECT_CATAOG_ROLE, so I can't say for sure that the 1st grant was required.

    An OEM account is separate from the database account. You need to use OEM UI to create an OEM account, however, for certain tasks to be done in the databases which OEM is monitoring they will also require separate database accounts within those databases. For example, to view the performance tab in OEM UI, a database account is required.
    OEM only has two types of users, i.e. Super Administrator and Administrator, but don't go by the names. You can grant an OEM 'Administrator' account access to specific targets and what they can do within OEM, such as only viewing reports, targets, and so on. For access within a database, the user created need not be a DBA either.
    I hope you understand.

  • Grant priviliges to directory by a non-dba user

    Hi All.
    I want to know the command to grant create tables, views, procedures, directory , functions, indexes, sequences to a non dba user.
    I have already granted following priviliges:
    grant create table to stats;
    grant create view to stats;
    grant create sequence to stats;
    grant create procedure to stats;
    But unable to create functions, packages and directories in non-DBA user.
    Plz help regarding this.
    Thanks
    Hassan

    So, i think you should go for these roles....... Yogesh, of course that's possible, but is not a good advice. Oracle 10g documentation :
    CONNECT, RESOURCE, and DBA
    These roles are provided for compatibility with previous versions of Oracle Database. You can determine the privileges encompassed by these roles by querying the DBA_SYS_PRIVS data dictionary view.
    Note: Oracle recommends that you design your own roles for database security rather than relying on these roles. These roles may not be created automatically by future versions of Oracle Database.
    Moreover, RESOURCE role includes UNLIMITED TABLESPACE privilege, which could be a bit dangerous. To avoid that you can grant connect and resource to a role and grant the role to the user.

  • How to allow access to winrs for non-admin user?

    I have Windows Server 2012 (and Server 2008, but it is next priority) to monitor it using txwinrm. txwinrm library internally is using WinRS protocol. I have to monitor it using least privileged user, but don't know how to configure access for him.
    All I managed to do - is to configure remote Powershell session for my user, but it's look like that winrs and powershell sessions have different security descriptors:
    Invoke-Command -ComputerName 192.168.173.206 -Credential (credential Administrator $pwd) -ScriptBlock { 2 + 2}
    # gives 4
    Invoke-Command -ComputerName 192.168.173.206 -Credential (credential lpu1 $pwd) -ScriptBlock { 2 + 2}
    # gives 4
    winrs -r:192.168.173.206 -u:Administrator -p:$pwd 'powershell -command "2+2"'
    # gives 4
    winrs -r:192.168.173.206 -u:lpu1 -p:$pwd 'powershell -command "2+2"'
    # Gives Winrs error: Access is denied.
    Configuration for my user is following:
    (Get-Item WSMan:\localhost\Service\RootSDDL).value
    # O:NSG:BAD:P(A;;GA;;;BA)(A;;GA;;;S-1-5-21-3231263931-1371906242-1889625497-1141)S:P(AU;FA;GA;;;WD)(AU;SA;GWGX;;;WD)
    (Get-PSSessionConfiguration -name Microsoft.Powershell).SecurityDescriptorSddl
    # O:NSG:BAD:P(A;;GA;;;BA)(A;;GA;;;S-1-5-21-3231263931-1371906242-1889625497-1149)S:P(AU;FA;GA;;;WD)(AU;SA;GXGW;;;WD)
    (In each security descriptor my user is given general access to protected object).
    So what security descriptor should I set to make my winrs query work for non-admin user?

    Hi Bunyk,
    I can not recreate the erroe you posted, and please also post the screenshoot in your convenience.
    I tested with a non-domain user but has the local admin permission of the remote computer, and this worked, before running the remote cmdlet in powershell, I also configured the TrustedHosts.
    In addition, the access denied could be also caused to the Protocol Filtering on the remote server, for more detailed information, please refer to this thread:
    winrs error:access is denied
    I hope this helps.

  • Instnce name in non-RAC environment

    Hi!
    In non-RAC environment V$INSTANCE.INSTANCE_NAME does not actually displays the name of the instance,that was set in INSTANCE_NAME parameter.
    It always displays DB_NAME instead.
    Is it any way to get instance_name that has service user connected to in this environment?

    The documentation on INSTANCE_NAME in the 10gR2 Reference says :
    "In a single-instance database system, the instance name is usually the same as the database name."
    (this after
    "In a Real Application Clusters environment, multiple instances can be associated with a single database service. Clients can override Oracle's connection load balancing by specifying a particular instance by which to connect to the database. INSTANCE_NAME specifies the unique name of this instance.")
    This would imply that setting INSTANCE_NAME in non-RAC is ignored. The usage of the word "usually" is weak.

  • Solaris 10,oracle 10g question- can't connect with non-dba user

    Hi
    I've installed the Oracle10g suite, enterprise edition ( 10.2.0.1). I've created a database called qa10g, which I can connect to as user 'oracle' once I export the ORACLE_SID and the ORACLE_HOME
    export ORACLE_HOME=/oracle/10g2
    export ORACLE_SID=qa10g
    then I type in the following at it puts me into sqlplus:
    $ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus system/system
    so that works fine..now whan I try to log in as another user that isn't a member of the dba group, and I export the ORACLE_HOME and ORACLE_SID variables, I can't get in to the database using $ORACLE_HOME/bin/sqlplus system/system, I get the following errors:

    so obviously, it is an enviromnet variable that isn't getting set properly, perhaps even ORACLE_SID=qa10g isn't working properly for the non-dba user ( in this case, the user is called ctronsys)
    for the work I need to do on this databse, I need to have the user I select to be able to log into the database with sqlplus commands like the ones listed above, without the connector string added at the end..the SID gets exported first..
    any help would be greatly appreciated, I'm a newbie to Oracle!
