Determining if PhotoStream Images are also elsewhere in database

i am trying to figure out if the images in my PhotoStream Projects in Aperture on my Mac Pro are also showing up somewhere else in my Aperture database on this computer.
i have been /manually/ importing these from my iPhone via USB into my MAC PRO Aperture database - and i am guessing that they should all be in the database somewhere IN ADDITION to the PhotoStream Pojrects but i would like to make sure that what i think i have imported has in fact been imported and is not for some reason /only/ showing up in the PhotoStream Projects.
is this "Show Referenced Files"?!

hi frank.
i am on 3.4.5 on the desktop where i store my library (running mountain lion which is the highest OS i can load) and i have 3.5.1 on the desktop running mavericks.
the database is 235 GB so i couldn't even get it on the laptop if i wanted to.
is there some workaround you can think of where i 'remotely' load the database while running 3.5.1 if it is not in fact possible to check this on the desktop? i mean, i just ran an import from the iPhone and Aperture gave me a "you imported 20 photos to the database and 409 photos were imported earlier to photostream and these cannot be imported - do you want to delete all the images?" prompt and this is basically a tad terrifying.
i imported the 409 images this morning using Image Capture and then imported them to the database so i know i have them there but no one has been able to verify for me that it is not in fact possible for me to have other images in the PS Projects that are NOT in the regular Aperture Projects that i have been using for years.
i am basically /guessing/ that this had to do with my turning on the "Automatic Import" option on the Mac Pro recently but i have no guarantee of this. plus i have 4000 odd images in PS on the desktop, 4000 odd images on images in PS on the laptop (no count is the same in almost any month on both of these computers) so i'm actually also a tad concerned that i may have images on the laptop in PS that are not in the regular Aperture database.
and short of exporting 4000 odd and then exporting 4000 odd and importing the lot into the database in a conventional manner and then trying to delete duplicates i am at a bit of a loss as to what this software is doing....
thoughts or suggestions? it would be great if someone was able to say that in no case are there images in the PS database that are not in the regular database but this prompt seems to indicate this is certainly not the case at least for 409 images of mine.
THANKS

  • Way to verify if newly imported images ARE NOT already in database?

i keep my images in Aperture on v3.4.5 on my Mac Pro and in the past have simply imported images using USB. after starting to use Photo Stream over the last two years it has seemed to me (just from a kind of naive look) that some of my images from my iPhone get imported to the MBP into Photo Stream (Aperture v3.5.1), some to the Mac Pro, and (i assume) some to both.
it also appears to me that if you /change/ your settings for Do Not Import Duplicates from Yes to No, or from No to Yes, (i.e. check or uncheck this option) that it is very easy to ALSO end up (say for instance on my Mac Pro where all my images are supposed to be neatly stored) with /some/ of your images ONLY in the PhotoStream project /and/ also to have some other images in BOTH the Photo Stream projects /and/ in the "non-Photo Stream projects" (i.e. in "regular" projects).
just having this latter issue basically makes a total mess of your database (since you have /some/ of your images /only/ in the Photo Stream projects) but if you add the former issue (some images only in the MBP database and some only in the Mac Pro database) then things are almost truly wrecked.
so - what i would like to know is if i EXPORT images from my MacBook Pro and i then IMPORT them into the Mac Pro database should Aperture pick up duplicates if i have Do Not Import Duplicates checked? also, i would like to know if it is possible to VERIFY through some method whether the newly imported images are, or are not, already in the database.
i am currently exporting images from the monthly dated Photo Stream projects on my MacBook Pro and then importing the images into the respective Photo Stream projects on my Mac Pro - and it does in fact seem to me that these photos do NOT exist in the Photo Stream projects on my Mac Pro. i say this since the new images get added to the Photo Stream project for that month with the next chronological number in that month (at least on my first month i have tested). they also do not seem to exist already in the Photo Stream database in, for instance, the next month which is where i would logically look for them. this then would mean that there is a very large amount of image loss in my database which is a problem.
so what i would like to do is /check/ somehow to see if the images may in fact be already in the database but happen to have not made it into the Photo Stream project for the month (i.e. they /only/ exist somewhere else in the non-Photo Stream projects).
note: for instance can i manually search somehow for "IMG_6789", which just came in with 250+ images in from "Feb 2013 Photo Stream" on my MBP and is now in "Feb 2013 Photo Stream" on my Mac Pro to verify whether this already exists or has been newly added?
please not that i cannot visually search for anything because the database is too large and i do not know where this image may reside without searching or finding it through a Aperture command.
    THANKS

hi leonie. thank you for this help.
first can you please tell me if setting Photo Stream on my Mac Pro to ON and turning Do Not Import Duplicates to CHECKED/ON (say if i start new with Photo Stream) has the consequence of ONLY importing images to my PS projects via WiFI and that any time i hook up my phone via USB (as i /had/ been doing) Aperture will then only import anything that has NOT already been imported to PS projects and it will put this in a "non-Photo Stream project"? i mean, i have realized recently that turning this ON may have completely changed the way i import images and done so in a way that puts some images from Camera Roll in one place and some images in another place.
i will divide up the rest into two parts:
    1. can you please tell me what the actual difference is between exporting images as Kind Versions and Kind Originals? i am (unfortunately) already doing this as Kind Versions and it appears to be working at least visually - by which i mean when i import photos in this manner to the Mac Pro that these images come into the monthly projects with images and file numbers that do not currently exist in this album. this means that these images (so far ALL of them) were in the laptop database but not on the desktop database (at least as far as Photo Stream is concerned which is all i can figure out right now).
i think it is in fact possible that these images may exist elsewhere in the database (and that Aperture is not picking up the fact that these are duplicates for some reason) but unless i am missing something won't this simply mean that i have a FULL SET of images in the Photo Stream database? anyway, i am not sure which is better - to catch these coming in as duplicates and to not import them or to import them into the Photo Stream projects, have them all in the database in these projects, and to deal with how they exist out of the Photo Stream projects by putting them where they belong and then running a de-duplication routine.
    2. the issue that i have been able to understand (with your help) is that when i turned Photo Stream ON, that this Do Not Import Duplicates setting was somewhere buried in my UI independent of Photo Stream settings (which has it's own poorly explained and poorly understood settings) and that this was set to ON or it was set to OFF. if it was CHECKED/ON then i was /ONLY/ importing images to my PS projects which was a total 180 degree change from my normal Aperture methodology and simply put images into PS projects and NOTHING went into my normal projects to sort later as i had been doing. then to compound the issue - when i hooked up my iPhone it would ONLY import images that did /not/ get synced to Aperture and get uploaded to the PS projects and it would tell me how many were already imported and how many were new and APERTURE WOULD SPLIT THESE UP INTO non-PS projects and PS projects which basically makes a total mess of my database.
i mean, what you were able to show me is that i DON'T KNOW what i had set originally but i think i had this setting set to OFF which would give me images both in the PS projects and in the non-PS projects as duplicates (assuming there weren't other issues) but i would ideally like to have had PS projects as just a kind of appendage or an unimportant piece of my database for reference only and to keep importing images via USB as i had done in the past and if this is what i had wanted (and if Photo Stream was implemented in an intuitive way that i as an intelligent computer person could understand) - well i would have set the do not import duplicates to OFF so that the PS images were duplicates of my normal USB imports.
but this - as i write - makes me realize that it has the unintended consequence of letting me import CAMERA ROLL images that were not deleted into my "non-Photo Stream projects" which as you indicate i don't want so this setting seems like it sets up a classic catch 22.

  • Use of Image Area element with a database

    Hello,
I have a database with a field containing an url to a graphic file.
I'd want to create a form which displays this image in an image area element.
I don't success in doing it. Does somebody knows how to do it ? With or without Javascript ?
Thanks in advance for your help
    Philippe

So, after further investigation, Static Images are behaving as they should. After setting the href the first time it can't be changed. It should be possible, however, to change the href of an Image Field as many times as you want, but it doesn't work currently in 7.0.5 or 7.0.7. This is known problem. Unfortunately I don't see any workaround possible for the time being if you need to change the image in a field multiple times. (I suppose you could have multiple image objects, one for each image, and hide/show them dynamically based on which should be shown at the time).

  • Identifying images in Photostream Project as being elsewhere in the database?

my aperture database is stuck on 3.4.5 because my mac pro is stuck on lion and i cannot figure out how to SORT my library with respect to these Projects.
basically i have changed my PS settings over the last couple of years (including my import settings) and i can no longer figure out if images that are in PS project are /solely/ in these projects or if they also reside elsewhere in the database. this relates (in part) to a confusion i had about what photo stream was doing but also about what the settings were doing.
so i have a huge issue where i don't know if SOME of the images in these Projects are basically "originals" in my database (it is the only instance of them in the database) or if they represent basically copies of images that are stored in their correct place in a Project that "thematically" sorts my images.
i mean, ideally i want to get all my images sorted THEMATICALLY in a Project and not simply have SOME of them only in the PS Projects. i also don't want to have to drag out /all/ of the images, sort all of them into thematically named Projects and then have to delete the ones that came in twice. this will be a nightmare and represent possibly three weeks of work.
anyway, i am upgrading to a new laptop with a larger hard drive and i am wondering if i migrate my library onto this new computer with a newer OS (and presumably a newer version of Aperture) can i sort this out easier/easily?
right now under my current OS i do not believe there is a way to see if the images in my PhotoStream Projects are basically duplicates of other images that have already been sorted into thematically named Projects of if in fact i need to move some images out of these PS Projects in order to get them where they belong.
hopefully someone understands the predicament and if not can ask me to clarify as i am pretty much dead in the water with an unsorted database AFAIK.
    THANKS

Yes you are right concerning iPhoto retaining the full size photo, in my earlier post I was incorrect to assume that PS pushed the lower quality photo to iPhoto, it doesn't, but it does push a lower quality image to your other idevices. This quoted from the FAQ....
On your Mac or PC, your photos are downloaded and stored in full resolution. On your iPhone, iPad, iPod touch, and Apple TV, your Photo Stream photos are delivered in a device-optimized resolution that speeds downloads and saves storage space. While actual dimensions will vary, an optimized version of a photo taken by a standard point-and-shoot camera will have a 2048 x 1536 pixel resolution when pushed to your devices.
Your device holds two copies of the same photo, one in PS, the other in whatever album you save your photo to, or the camera roll. My point is that PS is supposed to be a temporary folder, holding the images for 30 days, allowing you time to save the ones you want. As it is now, it's duplicating every photo, and storing them on the same device twice. Not what I want, nor what it's intended to do. If you have an iPhone, you can check this by using Camera+ or an app which shows metadata. Take a photo, import it into Camera+ then click info, look at the file size, then load the same photo from PS, again click info and look at the file size. Two different sizes, meaning two copies of the same photo, one being lower quality.
I just want it to do the task it's supposed to, which is temporarily hold my images, letting me save the ones I want, and then clearing after a month.

I have about 5,000 images in a Folder.  How can I determine which images are NOT in a Collection?

Create a smart collection with criteria "collection" and "does not contain"; and also with criterion Folder contains (or folder contains all)
That works if you are thinking about a specific named collection.
If you are interested in finding photos that are not in ANY collection, the usual trick is "collection" "does not contain" "a e i o u y"

    What is the problem specifiaclly?
If the images are intended for web use I would recommend converting them to sRGB which could be done with Edit > Convert to Profile or with File > Save for Web, but as including a Save step in Actions and applying them as Batch can sometimes cause problems I would go with regular converting.
You could also try Image Processor Pro.

  • Updated to Mountain Lion and also updated Aperture now ipad and iphone images are unsupported?

I've looked all over here and maybe I've missed it, but the only images that are missing or receiving the unsported image are the ones that have been taken with the iphone or ipad. Any help on this issue would be greatly appreciated.
I've tried reprocessing the photos and this still doesn't work. The photos that I recently imported from my Canon 60D are fine. Also when my photos re-synced with facebook they are now showing up there as the ! unsupported image on facebook.
Thanks for any help you may offer.

Unfortunately, that is a feature and not a bug.
It's the new design since Lion - Iphoto already has gone gray before Aperture See for example these links:
Re: After updating to Aperture 3.3 all my icons appears in Black and white. This includes the inspect button, photo stream button, the Facebook / flicker share button. Could you please help here ?

  • I have removed photostream from my iphone 4...Does this mean the photos are also removed from other devices

I have removed photostream from my Iphone 4...Does this mean the photos are also removed from other devices?

The iPhone has a closed file system and you would not be able to download files to it. There have also not been any identified virus/malware that can successfully get into the iPhone. You should be fine.

  • When I want to edit a photo in photoshop, iphoto duplicates the image and I end up with two or three copies of the same photo and they are also duplicated on my computer.  This has only occurred since I installed iPhoto 11.

Ever since I installed iPhoto '11 on my computer, I have had a problem with images being duplicated when I want to open an image to edit in Photoshop.  I did not realize at first that the images were also duplicated on my computer.  This has taken up an incredible amount of space on my computer.  Why does this happen?  Is there a problem with the software?  Can I remove iPhoto and re-install?  Would that help?

saUnless you have a copy of your iPhoto 09 library you will have to start over from scratch with a new library and import the Masters file from inside iPhoto 11's library as described here:
Start over from scratch with new library
Start over with a new library and import the Originals (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from your original library as follows:
    1.  Move the existing library folder to the desktop.
    2. Open the library package like this.
    3. Launch iPhoto and, when asked, select the option to create a new library.
    4. Drag the Origianls (iPhoto 09 and earlier) or the Masters (iPhoto 11) folder from the iPhoto Library on the desktop into the open iPhoto window.

I've just started using Lightroom 5, and right after importing them I noticed the images are of very poor quality. If I try and blow them up bigger using the slider they get even worse.
I've used Bridge in Photoshop to do this before and the images look great, so I can quickly look at them and sort the good from the bad.
I can't do this in Lightroom with the quality of the image thumbnails. So how do you make the thumbnails better?
Also does the camera MP size determine what the thumbnails look like? In other words If I used an 8MP camera, would the thumbnails look as good as they would coming from a 20MP camera?

And what type of previews are you creating during import (in the Build Previews section of the File Handling panel of the import dialog)?

  • Saving photostream to iPad or show photostream images on map

    Hey all,
myt iPad crashed one week ago. It was completely broken, but I could still save my images.
Now, I have a new iPad and I copied all the images onto the new iPad via the upload folder of windows that does an automatical synchronization with the photostream.
Now, I would like to show the pictures to my family by showing them the card and the different places I've been. But the images from the photostream don't show up on the map.
I also tried to kind of "save" the images of the photostream on my iPad but this didn't work either ( I copied them to an album, which worked fine, but only a few showed up in "camera roll" or "photos". Those that show up in the camera roll and in photos, are also shown on the map.
    Any solutiooojns for that?
    Thanks!

I'm not clear on your problem
if you select a photo in an event in iPhoto and press the delete key and then empty th eiPhoto trash and teh system trash that photo will be gone
They originated from Adobe PSE 11 which infiltrated my Library.
Please explain exactly what you mean by this
I manually deleted them fro MacBook
What exactly does this mean? Are you saying that you used teh finder to delete photos from the iPhoto library?  --  NEVER do that

  • Images are not showing in uitable view .

When running the app on simulator the images are comming well in table view , but no images are showing during in iPad Device and also showing no error .
I debuged the app ane the pointer is going to
    - (UITableViewCell *)tableView:(UITableView *)tableView cellForRowAtIndexPath:(NSIndexPath *)indexPath , and the image is set to image view of tableviewcell , but still showing no image in iPad . but working fine in simulator .
    Please help me .
    Thanks

99 times out of 99, when images show on the sim but not on the device, it is due to the fact....that's right...fact...that the sim is your computer and file names when code-consumed ignore case.
iOS on the other hand, and this is important, so take notes....is case-sensitive.
MyImage0666.PNG in the Finder...your project folder....is not the same as myImage0666.png
