Dev 6 connection to Oracle 8i

I have installed PO8i on different directory to Developer 6.0 ( Win 98 ).When I trying connecting through developer 6 to the database, I get the messages ORA -12154 and ORA - 12203. Also when on press connect I get a Dial-up connection.
I have tried some of the suggestions described in the Oracle site but no such luck

• Error with DG4ODBC while setting up connectivity from oracle to IBM iSeries AS400 version V7R1

Hi,
I have Enterprise linux 64-bit hosting Oracle 11gR2 64-bit (11.2.0.1) database. I have access to IBM iSeries AS400 version V7R1. I am trying to connect to IBM iSeries from Oracle Database through ODBC connectivity using Database Link. The following is what I have done.
On the Database (Linux) host Installed iSeriesAccess-7.1.0-1.0.x86_64.rpm provided by IBM.
my odbcinst.ini has the following entries:

I have looked up the errors on Oracle forums and could not get any valuable help anywhere.
Can someone kindly help out where I am going wrong?
Thanks,
Ram.

Hello kgronau,
Thank You very much for your recommendations. I removed the parameter HS_FDS_TRACE_LEVEL = 255.
I added HS_FDS_FETCH_ROWS=1 and also HS_NLS_NCHAR = UCS2
Tested my sql statement, which yielded the result as follows:
SQL> select * from mdiaz.AREMAIL@samplink;
select * from mdiaz.AREMAIL@samplink
ERROR at line 1:
ORA-28500: connection from ORACLE to a non-Oracle system returned this message:
㈵″㠵6
SO I thought I would give a try of removing the line HS_NLS_NCHAR = UCS2
and again tested my sql statement and it worked like a charm!!!!
I tested a count(*) and got the results back.
SQL> select count(*) from mdiaz.AREMAIL@samplink;
COUNT(*)
600
I really appreciate your valuable pointers and help.
Thanks once again!!!
Ram.

• Oracle 11.2 client connecting to Oracle 10.2 databases

I have an application which currently uses 10.2.0.4 Oracle Client to connect to Oracle 10.2 databases using java (jdbc).
Now I have to do setup on another linux server and looking into whether I can use 11.2 Oracle clinet avaiable on tcehnet.oracle.com to connect to
10.2 databases. I will be using jdbc for connectivity.

Maybe showing my ignorance here, but doesn't the application itself have to be written to use the jdbc thin driver?
That would not be typical. A Java application will normally be modular as regards DB connections.
1. The app itself will be written to take an instance of the 'Connection' interface
http://docs.oracle.com/javase/6/docs/api/java/sql/Connection.html
2. The actual 'Connection' instance will be created by a factory method or other application independent code at startup and then passed to the application code.
Just like TNSNAMES.ORA contains the parameters for OCI connections an application will normally use a config file and/or command-line parameters for the JDBC connection parameters.
Naturally, just like everything else, developers can always screw things up by hard coding values. Nothing you can do about that.
See the 'Database URLs and Database Specifiers' section of the JDBC dev guide
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/E11882_01/java.112/e16548/urls.htm#BEIJFHHB
Database URLs are strings. The complete URL syntax is:
jdbc:oracle:driver_type:[username/password]@database_specifier
Note:
The brackets indicate that the username/password pair is optional.
kprb, the internal server-side driver, uses an implicit connection. Database URLs for the server-side driver end after the driver_type.
The first part of the URL specifies which JDBC driver is to be used. The supported driver_type values are thin, oci, and kprb.
The remainder of the URL contains an optional user name and password separated by a slash, an @, and the
database specifier, which uniquely identifies the database to which the application is connected. Some database specifiers are valid only for the JDBC Thin driver, some only for the JDBC OCI driver, and some for both.
Then there are examples of each driver type in 'Table 8-3 Supported Database Specifiers'
Thin: "jdbc:oracle:thin:scott/tiger@//myhost:1521/myservicename"
See that table 8-3 for the different OCI options.

• Help using C# application to connect to oracle database

I'm new to database.
I'm developing a C# GUI application in visual studio 2008 that is suppose to interact with oracle. After researching and trying out several sample codes, nothing works and I'm in desperate need of some help/advice/suggestions.
The simplest example I'm trying is to just get a button to run a simple SQL query. The code is:
private void button1_Click(object sender, EventArgs e)
string oradb = "Data Source=acme.gatech.edu;User Id=gtg880f;Password=******;";
OracleConnection conn = new OracleConnection(oradb); // C#
conn.Open();
OracleCommand cmd = new OracleCommand();
cmd.Connection = conn;
cmd.CommandText = "select Location_Name from warehouse where Location_name = 'atlanta'";
cmd.CommandType = CommandType.Text;
OracleDataReader dr = cmd.ExecuteReader();
dr.Read();
label1.Text = dr.GetString(0);
conn.Dispose();
I've installed many many version of oracle database and have included the Oracle.Data.Access under reference.
If I use putty and connect to acme.gatech.edu via port 22, I can type sqlplus / and run the query "elect Location_Name from warehouse where Location_name = 'atlanta'" and it'll work.
After some research, some say that if I can connect via sqlplus that means i can connect to the database but what do i need to implement to enable my c# code in visual studio to be able to do that.
I did a search on the forum but found nothing that matches this. In essence, I'm not sure what/how to specify such that I can connect to the acme.gatech.edu server and run sql commands.
Thanks,
Oky Sabeni

There're two ways you can get data in and out of database using .NET
#1 System.Data.OracleClient namespace - it's .NET avail out of the box
#2 Oracle.DataAccess.Client - aka "ODP.NET"
Download: http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/windows/odpnet/index.html
Or download Beta because as of today it's the only version which supports .NET "TransactionScope" (I just tested seems like still it is NOT working Re: 10g Express + ODP.NET (version 2.111.6.20) > support TransactionScope? http://www.oracle.com/technology/software/tech/windows/odpnet/index1110710beta.html
QuickStart: http://www.installationwiki.org/ODP.NET_Getting_Started_Guide
Also there's a doc under Start menu>Programs>Oracle - OraOdac11g_BETA_home>Application Development>"Oracle Data Provider for .NET Developer's Guide"
It's worth reading just scroll down quick for code fragment.
Anyway here's two small examples:
Example 1: System.Data.OracleClient (Using library from M$)
* First you'll need to add reference to "System.Data.OracleClient".
IDbFactory oDbFactory = DbProviderFactories.GetFactory("System.Data.OracleClient");
IDbConnection oConn = oDbFactory.CreateConnection();
oConn.ConnectionString = "Data Source=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=MyHost)(PORT=MyPort))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=MyOracleSID)));User Id=myUsername;Password=myPassword;";
// Or ...
oConn = new System.Data.OracleClient.OracleConnection("Data Source=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=MyHost)(PORT=MyPort))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVICE_NAME=MyOracleSID)));User Id=myUsername;Password=myPassword;");
Example 2: ODP.NET from Oracle
IDbFactory oDbFactory = DbProviderFactories.GetFactory("Oracle.DataAccess.Client");
IDbConnection oConn = oDbFactory.CreateConnection();
oConn.ConnectionString = "Data Source=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=MyHost)(PORT=MyPort)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=MyOracleSID)));User Id=myUsername;Password=myPassword;";
// Or ...
oConn = new Oracle.DataAccess.Client.OracleConnection("Data Source=(DESCRIPTION=(ADDRESS_LIST=(ADDRESS=(PROTOCOL=TCP)(HOST=MyHost)(PORT=MyPort)))(CONNECT_DATA=(SERVER=DEDICATED)(SERVICE_NAME=MyOracleSID)));User Id=myUsername;Password=myPassword;");
string strSQL = "... SQL statement...";
int nPersonId = 0;
string strFirstName = null;
Person oPerson = null;
string strSQL = "SELECT Id FROM PERSON";
oCmd = oConn.CreateCommand();
oCmd.CommandText = strSQL;
oCmd.CommandType = System.Data.CommandType.Text;
IDataReader oRdr = oCmd.ExecuteReader();
while (oRdr.Read())
if (!Convert.IsDBNull(oRdr["Id"]))
nPersonId = (int) oRdr["Id"];
if (!Convert.IsDBNull(oRdr["FirstName"]))
strFirstName = (string)oRdr["FirstName"];
oPerson.Id = nPersonId;
oPerson.FirstName = strFirstName;
Example CREATE TABLE:
DECLARE
count_item int;
BEGIN
SELECT count(1) into count_item FROM user_sequences WHERE sequence_name = 'AUDITLOGSEQUENCE';

Before running script, make sure your account has permission (unless you're using SYS account of course). You'd probably need to know how to create user and granther right:
CREATE USER dev IDENTIFIED BY "devacc_@";
GRANT CREATE SESSION TO DEV;
GRANT DBA TO DEV;
Here's how you can run PL\SQL scripts in Oracle

• Excel-2007 cannot connect to Oracle ODBC data source, Control Panel can.

I cannot make an ODBC connection from Exce-2007 to Oracle work. I am an expert Excel and VBA user (since 1994) and I have frequently used Excel to access ODBC databases, including Oracle (I have done this with Excel-2003 both with worksheet queries and have written VBA ADO-connection routines). And even though in Excel-2007 a worksheet ODBC query is supposed to be easier to create than in previous version of Excel, my connection fails. Any suggestions and all help are welcome and much appreciated.
DETAILS

1) What is my system? I am using Excel-2007 on Windows Vista x64 and Oracle server v.11g on my computer (all this is on my computer, no network issues).
2) Why use Excel with Oracle at all? I use Excel-2007 to access Oracle rather than Access-2007 (or any other application like TOAD, etc.) because I do engineering calculations with the data stored in Oracle. These calculations are easier done in Excel (I suppose that one alternative to this could be to use some sql or Access to get the data from the database, then store it as plain vanilla CSV file, then open this file in Excel, then do the math (the math involves complex optimisation algorithms), then save the results as CSV, then use some sql or Access to put the data back into the database. Howwever this does not strike me as a quick or neat solution. And after all Excel has been designed to access ODBC databases, so why not use it?)
3) What do I do in Excel-2007 that won't work? I create an ODBC link to Oracle that does not work. In Excel-2007 this is straightforward:

define an ODBC connection (Data tab --> From other sources --> From data connection wizard);

define a query on the worksheet -- that's it, this is all!

I start with creating an ODBC connection:
a) I choose an ODBC data source type: ODBC DSN
b) Excel-2007 displays the list of the available ODBC data sources. I see in it my Oracle database name and I select it.
c) Excel-2007 displays the Data Link Properties:
- the "Provider" has a list of the OLE DB drivers with preselected "Microsoft OLE DB Provider for ODBC Drivers". I keep this default selection.
- the "Connection" tab has a connection string "DSN=<my database name>" which I keep, it also has fields for the user name and the password, which I fill with the correct credentials.
- Finally there is a button "Test Connection", which when I click produces the following error message:
"Test connection failed because of an error in initializing provider.
Unespecified error"

4) Additional food for thought:
a) In the above walk-through the only data, which I type, are the user name and password, everything else is selected from lists offered by Excel-2007, hence any possibility of typos being the cause of the problem can safely be discarded.
b) I can test the ODBC driver in the Control Panel and it shows that it can connect to the Oracle database:
- in Control Panel --> Admin Tools --> Data Sources (ODBC) on the "User DSN" tab I can see the list of the available ODBC data sources (same list as in Excel-2007, point 3b above) with the name of my database in it;
- selecting the name of my database from the list of the sources and clicking "Configure" button opens a tab with Data Source Name (same as in Excel-2007), TNS Service Name and User ID. I enter <user name>/<password> and click "Test Connection" button. A message "Connection successful" appears (just for a test I enter incorrect user credentials and "Unable to connect" message appears)
BOTTOM LINE

The procedure for using an ODBC connection from Excel is very simple, in the past I have created and used such connections numerous times with Excel-2003 and earlier on Win-XP and earlier. But now on Excel-2007 and Vista-x64 I cannot make it work.
Also, testing an ODBC connection driver is really easy and simple to be done in the Control Panel. There testing the same ODBC connection, which fails in Excel-2007, results in success.
I am frustrated by the simplicity of the problem and yet the persistant error. I have lost now two full days in failed attempts to make the simple procedure work and in searching the internet for answers.
All help is highly appreciated ,
Plamen

Did you find the solution to your problem?
If not, I think I may know.
Excel 2007 is a 32-bit application.
When installing 32-bit applications in a 64-bit environment, the "default" location is:
C:\Program files (x86)\...
Excel then launches from this location.
However, when it connects to Oracle and passes the name of the calling program, Oracle attempts to "interpret" the value of (x86) as if
the value within the parenthesis are being passed as a reference. Of course, iOracle doesn't find anything, so the result is (),
and then it cannot return the connection info back to the calling application.
I corrected it by installing Excel in C:\Program Files\, and once launched from that location, it works the same as on the 32-bit machines.
However, at my location, they are FORCING Excel to be installed in the(x86) location.
What I'm trying to discover now is:
Is it possible to flag Oracle to NOT process the embedded variables?
Or, is it possible to assign a variable in Oracle such that x86 = "(x86)", so that the end result is viable?
Have you had any luck with your installation?
thanks,
Paul

• Error while creating a JDBC connection to Oracle 11g using WLS 6.1

Hi
I am trying to connect to Oracle 11g database on Weblogic 6.1 server.
First of all i would like to know if this is compatible?
The environement that i have is this
1. JDK 1.3
2. Database 11g is on remote system
3. Oracle client on my local system ( Connecting to the 11g DB through the client works fine)
4. Weblogic server 6.1
5. Currently the application is connected to Oracle 10g DB and working fine(We are attempting to move it to 11g)
Below are the steps that i followed to create the connection:
1. Made an entry for the datasource in config.xml under <WLS_DOMAIN>/config folder as below
<JDBCConnectionPool DriverName="oracle.jdbc.driver.OracleDriver"
MaxCapacity="4" Name="CADConnectionPool"
Properties="user=abc_proxy;password=proxy_abc;dll=ocijdbc8;protocol=thin"
RefreshMinutes="5" ShrinkPeriodMinutes="10" Targets="CAsvr"
TestConnectionsOnRelease="true" TestConnectionsOnReserve="true"
TestTableName="dual" URL="jdbc:oracle:thin:@gen11t-ora.db.lab.xyz.com:1530:GEN11T"/>
2. Restarted the server.
3. Ran the application and get the following error on the server console:
<Aug 22, 2011 12:39:42 AM CDT> <Error> <JDBC> <Cannot startup connection pool "C
ADConnectionPool" weblogic.common.ResourceException:

Thanks

The driver being used by your weblogic is too old and incompatible with the DBMS. Upgrade the driver.

• How do I connect to Oracle with JDBC using "dedicated processor".

Because of performance problems we want to try to connect to
oracle using dedicated processor. We can do this from SQL Plus,
does anybody know what we need to set up in order to utilize
this from JDBC?

Which Java runtime error? (stack trace?)

• Trying to simply connect to Oracle with VBscript/ASP - and I cannot.

This is rather embarrassing. I am pretty fluent with ASP and VBscript, and I have written many a web application connecting to Microsoft SQL Server. Now I have a need to connect to an Oracle database, and I'm beating my head against the wall.
1) Web server is Windows Server 2003 SP1
2) Using ASP (not ASP.NET) & VBscript
3) I have installed the Oracle drivers on the server - it is version 10g
4) The administrator of the Oracle database to which I want to connect has created a username and password for me to use from within my code
5) Here is the code I am trying to run:
Set objConn = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
objConn.Open "Provider=MSDAORA;Data Source=XXXXXXX;User Id=YYYYYYY;Password=ZZZZZZZ;"
That's it. 2 lines of code just trying to establish a connection. Using the user name and password provided to me by the administrator, and for Data Source I am using the IP address of the Oracle server (like I have done in the past when connecting to SQL Server). I receive the following error message when viewing this in a browser:
Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle error '80004005'
ORA-12154: TNS:could not resolve the connect identifier specified
Evidently, the Data Source I am using is not correct, but I was provided no other information from the admin. This is the first time any of us have tried to connect to Oracle using ASP/VBScript, so the administrator isn't sure what I need to do ... any help would be so appreciated.

Hello,
I got mine to work by setting up an ODBC System DSN and connecting to it. I think this bypasses the Microsoft driver, which might be what's causing the problem.
Set Db = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
Db.Open "DSN=TEST;User ID=userid;Password=password;"
Good luck, I've found it requires a lot of persistence...

• Not able to connect remote oracle database over VPN

I can not connect remote oracle database over VPN. tnsping is ok and it shows the server information of remote database. i can also telnet the 1521 port of remote database server. I can connect the same server when it is located in the same LAN. Please help me out this is very urgent.

First, this is a forum of volunteers. There is no "urgent" here.
"Urgent" means one of two things -
1) people are dying, or
2) you have a customer-facing, revenue-producing production system that is down.
(And to get some perspective on the second case, keep the first in mind.)
For the first, you call whatever civil emergency service seems appropriate.
For the second, you open an SR with Oracle - which requires a paid-up support contract. For *them* to consider your problem "urgent", you will need to demonstrate that your problem falls under item #2. I seriously doubt your problem fits that criteria.
You don't have a support contract? Now you know the exact dollar figure that your company places on the data.
That said, you need to understand a few things about your specific problem,
First, port 1521 is only used by the listener to accept a connection request. Once it gets that request (and finds that it is for a service (sid) that it knows about, it will fork a server process and tell the requesting client that it can communicate with that server process over some other port .. a randomly chosen port number in the "high" range. It could be your vpn is blocking that other port, whereas your internal firewall is not.
But this is just an educated guess since I cannot find "can not connect remote oracle database over VPN" in any error message manual. If you had mentioned the VPN along with an actual oracle error message we could be much more precise in our diagnoses and recommendations.
---- edit 22 Sep
It occurred to me that I just assumed you were using the same client machine in both cases ... a laptop that you use both at work (local network) and home (vpn). If that assumption is false, there are probably problems with your tns setup on the home (vpn) machine.
But again, it would be much easier to help if you gave us an actual error message.

Also, see this ARTICLE from the Tips & Tricks sub-forum, for things to look at with crashes and hangs. It covers the hardware, the OS and the software, and offers links for tuning up the system, and getting it ready for video editing. I know that there is a lot of material in there, but Neale has done a great job of putting things into a checklist, and offering links to other material.
That rec. is for use along with John T's links, which are a bit more specific to your burned DVD's.

• Can't get Microsoft FrontPage to connect to Oracle 9.2i

After considerble discussion in the microsoft.public.frontpage.client newsgroup (subject: "Database | Results ... won't ... through Oracle ODBC"), we had to give up and conclude that there didn't seem to be a straightforward way to connect to Oracle 9.2i via the FrontPage database wizard.
I tried a system Oracle ODBC DSN via MS Access and it worked; but, ` can't get the same DSN to work from FrontPage. From FrontPage it generates a user/password error, though the same user/password works from MS Access.
I tried an OLEDB connection and still received the following:
Server error: Unable to connect to a database from the web server using the
connection string 'Provider=MSDAORA; PWD=myPwd; UID=Administrator; Data
Source=glOdb.mikecoughlin.net'.
The following error message comes from the database driver software; it may
appear in a different language depending on how the driver is configured.
ORA-01017: invalid username/password; logon denied
Source: Microsoft OLE DB Provider for Oracle
Number: -2147217843 (0x80040e4d)
I'm certain that this user/password combination is valid e.g. it works in Enterprise Manager to view tables etc.
So, my question is:
Does anyone have a/the workaround to use FrontPage to connect to Oracle 9.2i ?
thanks,

• Connect to Oracle without Oracle Client in Windows?

Hi All,
Is there anyway to connect to Oracle DB without any installation of Oracle Product in Client?
I am using MS ODBC Driver Oracle but It need the "Data Source Name"
It seems that client machine do need to Setup the NET 8 Configure / Tnsname.ora
I can try to set any thing in Oracle Server, But want to minimize the effort doing on the client (Because there are many!).
I am using Visual Basic, WIN XP as client Platform. WIN 2K as Oracle DB Server.
Can anybody give me a hand. Thank you very much!
Eric Yuen

You'll need to install Oracle Client in the client machine. ODBC (or other) connections need OCI and Oracle Net layers.
The Oracle ODBC has a lot of dependencies, probably a thousand files. Unfortunately Client is pretty heavy... managewize also. So that's why you should develop "internet apps". :)
