/dev/hda1 or /dev/ide/host0/bus0/target0/lun0/part1?

I'm not really a newbie, but this sounds like a newbieish question.  In all the previous distros I've used, everything was referenced using the symbolic links like /dev/hda1.  When I installed AL, it used the real long "actual" locations.  Is there any advantages/disadvantages to using one over the other?  The reason I'm asking is because the output of the df command apparently uses whatever format is specified in the fstab file.  so since it's entered into fstab using the long one, the the output for each partition is on two lines (one for the location, the other with all the vitals).  This is of concern to me because I have a script that occasionally checks the disk space and sends me an email when its getting full.  Well it just analizes it line by line, so the email would tell me when one is getting full, but not tell me which one.  Sure it's simple enough to just log in and do a df on the terminal, but it's the whole concept of the thing that matters.  Plus I could make my fstab file that much smaller by referencing the links and not using the full names.  Thanks for any input.

DEVFS!   you still using that junk
i said fair well to /dev/blah/blah/blah/blah/blah/blah/partblah while taking the leap
to udev and hotplug.
somewhere it was stated  that the devfs entries where being diminished and taken out bit
by bit. i noticed that my ability to connect to my camera and usb memory stick was crippled.
i had to take action and go for it.
now i am back to using the more reasonable /dev/hda1, /dev/fd0, /dev/camera, /dev/usb_stick,
etc. using udev.

  • Why /dev/discs/disc0/part1 instead of /dev/hda1

subject says it all.  every experienced linux user knows the difference between /dev/hda and /dev/hda1, and since arch currently is still a more advanced distro, why have the arch developers decided to use this new /dev/discs/disc0/part1 instead?

  • Mounting /dev/hda1 on home/ftp/c failed on NI-8196 PXI controller.

    Hi folks,
I am having some problems in recognising a PXI controller ( NI-8196
)  and a field point unit on my host MAX. I know both of them are
on the same subnet. I have Labview RT running on the PXI controller. I
    don't know which version though.
The problem is while setting up the IP configuration for the PXI
controller in the MAX. It doesnt take the IP from either the DHCP
server or when I use static IP's. I have already checked the Switch
settings on the controller. All of them are OFF. The BIOS option for
the IP reset has been disabled too, still the controller boots up with
    0.0.0.0
While booting up it gives me the error:  "  mounting
/dev/hda1 on home/ftp/c failed:  Invalid Arguement. Booting in
    safe mode. "
With the field point unit, the MAX doesnt recognise it on the network. it doesn't show up under the REMOTE SYSTEMS panel.
My MAX version is 4.0, Labview version on the host is 8.0
Any help will be greatly appreciated.
    Thank you,
    Sandeep

For the PXI chassis, I would start by trying a reformat. RT Disk Utilities in MAX>> Create format and boot disks.

  • Messages to /dev/sysmsg and /dev/console are displayed on the CDE Desktop

I noticed that after reboots any message sent to /dev/sysmsg or /dev/console is displayed to the CDE Desktop (wallpaper). After I log out then log back in the problem disappears. This happens in global zones only and not in a non-global (local) zone.
(the only service I see with "svcs -xv" is the Print Service)
To repeat the problem I have to do the following:
    1. Reboot (init 6)
    2. Login to the CDE as a user.
    3. Open an Xterm window, and in the windows, "su" to root
    4. Observe a "su on ..." message on the CDE desktop in big white "OBP" looking mono-spaced text.
    5. Log out of the CDE
    6. Login to the CDE as a user.
    7. Open an Xterm window, and in the windows, "su" to root
    8. Problem has disappeared, no more logging of console like messages to the CDE desktop.
As well, if I do something like this after I reboot, and on 1st log in:
    echo "Hi there" > /dev/console
    echo "Another Hello" > dev/sysmsg
I'll see both messages print to the Desktop of the CDE. If I log out and log back in, I will no longer see this kind of behavior.
    My Hardware: Sun Netra CP3260
My Software: Sun Solaris 10 5/08 Update 5 with 137137-09
    Additional info:
/etc/syslog.conf - does have a line that directs some output to /dev/sysmsg
    /etc/default/su - does list: CONSOLE=/dev/console
I did comment out the above two lines in my syslog.conf and /etc/default/su, and the behavior goes away, however this is a workaround and not a fix of the issue.
    Any ideas?

  • Phone SD card mounts to /dev/sdh (not /dev/sdh1)

I got a new Android phone (<3) the Samsung i7500. Its internal and external SD cards mount to /dev/sdh and /dev/sdi respectively. I found out with dmesg:
scsi8 : SCSI emulation for USB Mass Storage devices
    usb-storage: device found at 7
usb-storage: waiting for device to settle before scanning
scsi 8:0:0:0: Direct-Access Samsung SAMSUNG Android Mass PQ: 0 ANSI: 2
sd 8:0:0:0: Attached scsi generic sg8 type 0
scsi 8:0:0:1: Direct-Access Samsung SAMSUNG Android Mass PQ: 0 ANSI: 2
sd 8:0:0:1: Attached scsi generic sg9 type 0
sd 8:0:0:0: [sdh] Attached SCSI removable disk
sd 8:0:0:1: [sdi] Attached SCSI removable disk
    usb-storage: device scan complete
And fdisk doesn't list them. And these are actual partitions, not disks. I mounted them, and they have the stuff I'm looking for. Why is it like this? One bad thing about this is that fdisk -l doesn't list them, and I have to use dmesg to look at where they pop up each time. That's rather unnecessary IMO.

I suppose that the filesystem could have been written to the raw device and not to a partition. This is fine as long as you don't need multiple filesystems on one device (i.e. multiple partitions).

  • Disk does not show in /dev/dsk or /dev/rdsk

Is there some command I need to execute to get my disks to show up?
It is a virtual disk created in a logical domain. This is the guest server and at the ok prompt a devalias shows the disk. It also shows up in :
    ../../devices/virtual-devices@100/channel-devices@200
on the guest server but not in /dev/dsk or /dev/rdsk

Depending on the guest solaris version, you may need to do a reconfiguration reboot for it to show up.

  • Can't see /dev/cdrom and /dev/dvdrw

    Hi,
I have created a guest Oracle Enterprise 5 64bit. I want to mount the dvd but I don't see /dev/cdrom or /dev/dvd etc. How can I add these devices and mount the dvd?
    Thanks.

Hi, as other people already explained in other threads it's not easy (if not impossible) to mount a physical CD/DVD reader/burner to a Guest.
If it can be somehow useful, if you have an ISO image (file) of the CD/DVD you want to use, you can copy/ftp this ISO file to your VM guest and then:
mount ./your-file-name.iso /mnt -o loopThis will mount the ISO image to the /mnt directory. Then you can "cd /mnt" and use it.
    Hope it can help somehow.

  • Replication for Data on DEV and QA - bad idea - primary key problem now

I goofed.  I tried to use replication to keep the data on my dev machine up to date with the live server.  Now when I try to work on the database, adding new stuff, it fails.  It says there is a primary key problem every time I try to add
a new item to a table with my program.  I should have realized this would happen!  Now, even though I've removed the replication, I'm having the problem.  Can anyone help me get my database functional again :/  Or should I resort to a database
    restore.  Thanks!

So you have an IDENTITY column in your table? Run a
DBCC CHECKIDENT (Transact-SQL) command with option RESEED to fix the current identity value to see if it works then.

  • Need to create a transport of SD config data from DEV 120 to DEV 110

During our conversion some config modifications were mad in DEV 120 instead of DEV 110.
I need to get the config:
SPRO> Sales Distribution> Billing> Billing Documents> copy sales documents to Billing documents
    From 120 to 110.
I have tried to force a transport creation in 120, and used SCC1 to import into 110, but no data comes over.
How can I force all the data from these config tables to load into a transport so can send from 120 to 110.
    Thanks,
    Bev Barbush

    Hi Beverly,
I would try bringing this transport in via STMS and then reviewing the import log to see why the data is not going across. What I've normally seen in this situation is the data was not correctly added to the transport before it was imported.
I would NOT copy config tables back from the QAS system. Copying select portions of config data from one system to another is likely to break all sorts of logical relationships between tables.
Have you guys tried running a config comparison between 110 and 120 to see what the actual differences are?
    Hope that helps.

  • Gridwars settings reset on close + ln -s /dev/input/js0 /dev/js0

I installed gridwars from aur on x86-64. I also installed the entire lib32 group (although that was for various reasons not only gridwars). Everything seems fine except every time I close the game my high score and my configurations get reset. I was just wondering why this is happening and what I can do to fix it.
Also the only way to make my gamepad work with gridwars is if I link /dev/input/js0 to /dev/js0, but every time I reboot I have to do it all over again. How could I fix this? I assume there must be a way to make the game use /dev/input/js0 instead, I just don't know where to start.

    Nothing?

  • /dev/hme and /dev/ip trace/log messages

    Hi,
I want to enable debug messages from above drivers. I tried setting "ip_debug" flag using "ndd" but I did not see any debugging messaged in "/var/adm/messages". Where does IP send its debug messages? How about /dev/hme? Is there any debug facility?
    Thanks in advance.
    -Ashutosh

    Hi,
You probably have this "logging" configuration set
    logging trap debugging
This can be confirmed by using the below command to show all "logging" related configurations
    show run logging
The "logging trap" sets the level of log messages that are sent to your Syslog server. So considering its set to "debugging" or "7" means that you are essentially logging everything possible with regards to the logging level.
The more typical level for this is either "informational" or "notifications"
I tend to keep it at "informational" though it generates a lot of logs still but its good in the sense that it logs all the connections/translations formed on the firewall and also logs when they are removed from the firewall.
If you were to configure "notifications" you would only tend to see the connections attempts that are blocked by the firewall and the log amount would be pretty minimal
Then again you also have the option to disable certain log messages altogether. You could for example disable the messages that tell you that a translation was formed/teardown which would already remove a considerable amount of logged messages.
Then I guess there might be change to create a custom list of messages you are interested in also.
You can also change the default level at which some logging level is logged.
I guess the last options I mention would take some research on your part to determine which would serve you the best.
The last options you mention in the post dont have anything to do with the Syslog servers logging. They are related to the console connection and the logs that is stored in the firewalls buffer which should be visible with the "show logging" command.
    Hope this information helps

  • Ttys are not owned by group tty (and /dev/pts verses /dev/vc)

I just tried to do a "mesg y" in my terminal on my dekstop and got the error:
mesg: error: tty device is not owned by group `tty'.
So I chowned my tty to belong to group tty (previously it was owned by my generic group "users", of which b-con is a member) and it worked fine. I then checked my active ssh connection from my laptop and its tty *was* owned by group tty.
I assume there is something that is setting my created ttys to belong to the current user group by default instead of tty? Where might that be? I scanned all relevant bash profile/rc's and found nothing.
    On a related note:
Right now I'm logged into my machine as normal, ie, into X and have a terminal running. I'm also logged in, as another user, via ssh. When I execute the "who" command, I see:
    b-con vc/7 Feb 14 12:34 . 6894 (:0)
    rj pts/2 Feb 14 22:02 00:03 9849 (192.168.0.4)
Why is b-con, the user logged in from the physical keyboard, shown as logged on vc/7 while the ssh user (rj) is shown as being on pts/2? User b-con has terminals on pts/0 and pts/1 open, so why is he reported as being on vc/7?
I was trying to use the "write" command to communicate between the two users, and b-con can write fine to rj on pts/2, but rj cannot write back to b-con because "/dev/vc/7: Permission denied". If I specify "write b-con /dev/pts/1" then I get the error "b-con is not logged in on pts/1". This is true because it's not my login shell, but it still is a shell I'm on.
Any enlightenment? I assume the latter half of my question boils down to login shells...

Yeah, it is pretty worthless. Designed for the pre-X11 days, I suppose.
Since the tty's are owned by user group of the owner, if the users you wish to communicate are of the same gropu you can use the primitive
    $ echo text > /dev/pts/X
if you just want to move a little it of information around. You probably wouldn't want to hold a conversation that way, though. ;-)
Another way around it would be for both users to share a screen session (Google for tutorial). If you just open up nano you can hold a decent IM convo. For two people logged into the same machine, that's the best solution for interaction/conversation that I can think of.
